I almost set up a patreon account, but I felt how you feel about it. More time on creators, driving my followers now to another site, yadda yadda. So instead, I just put a paypal donate link in my description below my videos. I mention the link in my YT vid, and boom! I loved the DIY days, when cameras didn't have sensor stabilization, when a gimbal stabilizer was a mechanical contraption that took weeks, months, years to master... I'm afraid those days are over. Convenience has become key. No more using jar openers as manual focus control... nah, people want reliable C-AF or use wireless focus pull systems. I don't think anybody really messes with PVC anymore? China has been aware of what the big guys were doing and they flooded the market with relatively inexpensive gear. Consumerism heyday: why make it, when you can buy it? But if convenience is key... there's still room for a lot of 'lifehacks' if you will. Just common sense little tips 'n tricks is something for everyone.
@frugalfilmmaker4 жыл бұрын
I agree. There is always something cool and inexpensive to make a video about. And I don't miss the days prior to sensor stabilization. It works miracles on vintage lenses.

There has indeed been a change, and you can now get some cheap but usable filmmaking gear on line from Walmart even. At the same time, there are very capable cameras that lack the convenience features you mention such as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4k and 6k. Another thing to keep in mind: Too many beginning filmmakers concentrate on the camera and forget about other things that are at least as important such as lighting and sound, areas where DIY gear can come in very handy. That's especially true of lighting. BTW, you know what I'd love to see someone invent: A DIY motorized slider. Even better, a DIY motion control system. That last may be wildly unrealistic, but maybe there's a way to do it that I just haven't thought of.

@@frugalfilmmaker Now I'm trying to find out how I can use a laptop as a monitor for my Sony A6000,,, I ordered some (5m) HDMI cable and I hope then I can connect the A6000 with my laptop. There are not much video's to find about this and even if it will be possible. There is some software from Sony that accomplished this but no live view with the A6000. If I could see the viewfinder ofthe A6000 on my laptop then it will be so much more easy to do the focusing (with a follow-focus) if I can see the peaking on the laptop monitor. I'm still looking for so solution on this, but not much to find on YT.

@@DGaryGrady Hi Gary, we have no "walmart" over here in Belgium, and no comparison store for it. So I have to order the most over the internet and mostly in China. I’d say that the DIY builds with the Q&A/bonus content on Patreon is definitely the way to go. I remember me and my Dad hunting down parts in Home Depot for the Frugal Camera Stabilizer Rig. I usually shy away from having to build or put anything together, so I kind of surprised myself, but you made it look easy. I spray painted mine black, and it’s a really nifty rig. I think that kind of thing is your niche. It’s funny how we’ll venture out into different arenas, but usually always gravitate back to what we were drawn to in the beginning. It’s like coming full circle.

Awesome that you are back, and congrats on the play button! Speaking personally, I always watched your channel for the DIY stuff, or anything that would help me get better quality videos on a small budget. It feels to me like that is a harder job now because gear seems to be so much cheaper than it was 5-7 years ago, a lot of people don't need to go the DIY route. That being said, the pole stand vid and the teleprompter vid both inspired me to think differently about my own setup, definitely the type of content I appreciate. I agree with you on how it feels kinda sad to have over a hundred thousand subs and have only a small fraction watching, but the same thing is happening with my channel which has a similar number of subs, especially in the last 2 or 3 years. I think YT is just a much more competitive place than it was. I think you are doing the right thing by asking what people want to see, and then see where that takes you:) From what I have seen, you are full of great, out of the box ideas, so keep em coming!

I prefer shorter videos. (I also prefer those without the current fad for background music, which makes you feel like you're listening to a lecture stuck in an elevator, but that's another matter.) Creators who make 15 minute videos in order to qualify for a mid-roll ad are overlooking the fact that if they cut that 15-minute video into three more narrowly focused 5-minute videos they'd very likely get the same or more watch time and also revenue from three ads. True, if I watch all three five minute videos I haven't saved any time over watching one 15-minute video, but I'm more likely to have several short breaks in the day versus a few long ones. I think one reason John and Hank Green's Vlog Brothers collected such a large audience caught on was their rule requiring most videos to be under four minutes.

I’ve always loved the DIY stuff, even if a particular project isn’t something I would need to make and use. They’re interesting. I also like the videos that show editing tips for Vegas since that’s the editor I use. Taking a guess in DIY vs. screenwriting viewership, it may be that there are far more people who want to make their own informal content for youtube and far less who want to make polished mini-movies, so the videos on DIY projects, cheap camera gear, and video editing are more useful to the average viewer than something involving scripting, hiring talent, scouting locations, and so on. That’s certainly not to say the screenwriting and movie making information isn’t useful to those who want to make skits and shorts, of course.

What brought me to your channel back in 2015, and what kept me as a subscriber through the dark days of 2017-2020 is... Well, making KZbin videos *is* film making - or at least there's a lot of transferable skill between the two areas. The landscape has changed a lot in the last 5 years, but KZbin, Twitch, TikTok people are all still content creator using those same transferable skills, and what you bring to the table is "how to be better at it". The lifechanging videos for me were things like teaching how to hide a $100 Zoom H1 and $20 Radio Shack (HA! TOLD YOU TIMES CHANGED!) lav mic on your person, in your pocket, then synching the audio in post for a huge but frugal boost in production quality. So, not necessarily "DIY" How To Make Stuff, but definitely DIY 'how to improve your craft' is a big driver for what think you can teach me and people like me.

As a Frugal Film Maker my self, I subscribed because I enjoy creative solutions to common problems that involve outside of the box thinking. As far as Patreon vs Ad based revenue. I think you are over thinking Patreon. There are two types of patrons. The first type of patron is some one who appreciate the results of ones work and thus wants to support them because it brings them joy or fulfillment in some way. The second type of patron is the "client" patron who expects something more out of their monetary gift; however, you are the content creator and have complete control of what type of patrons you want. Many artists see the second form of Patronage as a type of selling out as they are not creating something out of personal inspiration, but out of client demand, and it has been shown that that often kills the true creative process and can drive an artist to no longer take joy in their work. If you do this for the joy of it, then just seek the first type of patron, and maybe make two versions of the same video, one with ads and one without ads. That way you have given them something without compromising your personal creative desire.
@frugalfilmmaker4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the excellent insight, Bill!
@DGaryGrady4 жыл бұрын
You're right about the two kinds of Patreon patron and I've been both, but more often the first kind. (I also pay KZbin $10 month not to show me ads, and my understanding is that a good fraction of that goes to creators who would otherwise get ad revenue.) A premium doesn't need to be valuable in a practical sense. Some photos, a physical postcard, or something along those lines can be just as good.

@@DGaryGrady I supported several KZbin creators. All of which so far have been because they have taught me something I am really interested in. My only current sub is to Bad Obsession Motorsport. Two guys from outside Birmingham England that are entertaining as well as informative. They offer 24 hour advanced access to videos (which I never use because I don't check my email every day) and a whopping 10% off products from a automobile racing supply store over in GB (again doesn't mean anything to me with the shipping charges and all.) What's Sparky up to? All that juicy stuff. Congratulations on the award! I watch EVERY video you post. If it's something I don't care about at all (like the screenwriting video), I'll watch a little bit, give it a LIKE and a comment, then move on. I originally came to this channel for the DIY stuff. I made a few of them. I also appreciated the videos in which you told of a great bargain (like the $56 7" monitor, which I bought) and how to build a Sony battery mount for it (which I built). I think updated DIY videos would be good, if the construction was something better than PVC pipe. When I first came to this channel, I was just getting back into photography, so I was looking for an inexpensive way to get all that neat extra gear. Since then, I've bought all that good stuff (jib, Glidecam. gimbal, rig, etc.), so my DIY needs are much fewer. But there seems to be many new people starting KZbin channels who need gear related to that. And many of them use only their smartphone for recording. I must say, I've been very critical of smartphone picture quality. But the iPhone 11 does an amazing job - so much better than previous smartphones. Good luck!

Scott, I think what is more important is what you want to do? You have a passion for film making, which obviously includes equipment which might be duplicated on the cheap, but is that your passion too? Do you want to and have the time to work this channel like a job? And would you enjoy that? If not, then bring us along on your journey. We can all have all of the equipment and gadgets, but if we do not have the vision, the perspective, the art of capturing a story or a shot - parse that out for us. Give us your tips, insight and strategies. Sometimes we are just wanting to capture the kids or grandkids at an event and we want the video to not look amateurish, or maybe we want to video blog, or do a documentary, or even a short story, and so your expertise could propel us where a DIY would never go. But along the way as you have an equipment hack, suggestion, or review, we could benefit from that too. Follow your passion and we will enjoy and learn from you and hopefully you will be blessed too.

Congratulations Scott !!!! I really like the DIY stuff and some really good tips came out of the Q&A’s I’m not sure if Patreon would work, your audience are attracted to the channel by hints and tips on video making solutions on a budget. For me personally I am more likely to build / Adapt something than splash out cash on buying some expensive kit to do the job. From this perspective I think your audience are Probably more inclined to follow links to Amazon etc than a subscription model. Not everyone is handy at making stuff so perhaps you could make a small number of your latest invention as a giveaway if people like and share the video. This would drive up the views of the video for very little outlay and increase the watch time ? Merchandise is another big thing I’m not sure if it’s something you do or promote ? Best wishes Tim

It occurs to me that if you want a genuine place to work from, DIY is excellent. Any chance you would consider being a hub for other filmmakers? The gist is that you interview filmmakers and their ideas, issues and problems become your DIY slots. Add footage, tips, scripts, post pro tips etc.there is also the possibility of filmmakers requesting footage from other filmmakers worldwide and your site could be the hub for that? I'm open to sending footage of places or weather in Ireland in exchange for us street scenes, mountain or desert scenes etc, The idea is that as a community, filmmakers are good at overcoming odds. i'd pay to join an amateur or pro site(yours) to trade my own footage with other like minded filmmakers. Brilliant to see you back online. Congrats on the silver award! Shane, Tipperary, Ireland

Collaboration with other KZbinrs is a great idea, and one I've been terrible at. I probably interact the most with Knoptop, and we STILL have not done a collab video yet. I like your idea of sharing footage. It's a good one.

Your DIY videos are great and probably are the major reason for your success. Another area that could compliment this, and would be in line with "frugal film-making," is to share and review equipment useful in creating videos that is effective but inexpensive. When I first started making videos I watched some audio and video KZbin guys that were really helpful. But as their expertise grew they became more and more enamored with expensive equipment, and after a while their videos became mostly irrelevant to me. (I don't need to see a review of a $1,000 recording device when a $99 Zoom H1n works perfectly fine for me). When they review lights that cost $700 I don't watch for long. So, to live up to your name and expand your content, you might consider reviewing some of the cheaper equipment (audio/video/lighting/other stuff) useful for video creation which would be perfectly suitable for 95% of KZbin creators (especially us "frugal" types).

I totally agree, and I think there is still a space for cheaper gear and filmmaking. It's a space I still like to be in.

I hear your frustration. I too have a channel and having to figure out things on your own after 8 years for me can get frustrating. I honestly watch everything you put out to the bitter end. ;-) I even watched the entire video about screen writing on that cheap 23 dollar typewriter though I had zero interest in it. It's my way of supporting you. As far as what I like from you. First, your personality is a BIG draw. I like your DIY stuff as it is creative. Maybe you could do some stuff with how you shoot, what you shoot with. Maybe different lighting setups and scenarios? I hope this helps you.

Thanks Danny, your comments are VERY helpful. You also flatter me with your thoughts on my personality, since I know I'm pretty dry on camera.

@@frugalfilmmaker Not flattery at all. You are sincere and humble. It comes through. I don't throw around unwarranted compliments. You got them because you deserve them. I hope I have sprung an idea or 2 for you. Also, when will you complete the video from your son you started some months ago? I'd love to see how that story goes. Have a great weekend sir

CONGRATS! This was way over due in my opinion. As a side note., I noticed a lot of DIYs, Product Reviews and Taste Tests get a lot of views! I have a crappy low-interest channel, but the few crappy product reviews I've done - got the most views. I havent gotten a viral video, but more views than most my other vids. If I spent more time preparing my reviews and be a little more concise, I could probably get more views IF I wanted to focus my energies on that - but I'm too random and too lazy to expend that effort. LoL. I don't want fame anyway - LoL. I know from experience, KZbin has cheated me out of money before the got stricter on subscription numbers, views, and stuff, so I dont want to monetize ever again. I never got paid after following their rules. People like YOU deserve the attention and monetization IF they actually pay you. You put a lot of professionalism in what you do.

Random and too lazy? Sounds like my kind of channel! I wonder about the quality of my videos sometimes when I see what others are doing, so I appreciate the kind words.

It is true that China makes cheap stuff. However, this week with pvc pipe, I made a 62 inch square green screen using pvc EZ pipe clamps to attach the material to the frame. Very easy to setup, attach green fabric and smooth out wrinkles. I can't buy anything this inexpensive and easy to use. The thing about DIY is I control the "fit for purpose" design aspects. I don't deal with too small or too big issues. I can make something "just right". I do buy both cheap stuff and pricey stuff, but I have saved a lot of money making my own as well. A common complaint of pvc is that it does not look professional to some people and yes that can be true. Maybe one day I will paint them black and add some blinking lights. However there are other content creators, like myself, that are struggling to save few bucks. When they look at my stuff I create inspired by the Frugal Filmmaker, they usually ask, "exactly how much did that cost"? Thanks for coming back and let know how I can help. Maybe there are other people you have inspired and and we can send you some content.

KZbin video trends have changed in the 3 yrs you were gone. Sped up, un narrated and narrated etc. Equipment has changed and become more affordable (drones and the like) So reviewing video format types and and incorporating newer and more affordable equipment as well as DIY solutions to lighting, stabilization and video timeline editing is what I would like to see.

Hi. I'm in Ireland and I love your channel. I've watched most of your videos and I loved the mix of DIY and pre production stuff equally. I was vocally delighted to see you back. I've made your rig and I've used it. (I procrastinate indefinitely about starting a channel). I had to get some parts from Germany and China because that pipe is only used for electrics here and the joins tend to be junctions w/screw panel access, terrible. I recommend your channel to others who, like me, would make their own gear. - I got notifications for your recent videos. I really like the mini telly prompter and my daughter very nearly lost a jewelry box to it last week :) - What would I like to see...more DIY, more production insights, vlogs on your productions, more of your productions and projects, maybe a bit on your part of the world etc. Regards and congratulations. Dave.

I really enjoy the DIY projects but I watch the other videos occasionally. Every video may not have a topic that I'm interested in right now but may be later on. I think we have all worked on a video and realized that we couldn't get a specific shot or needed a way to get the camera at another angle and that is where DIY comes in. Am I going to spend $1,000 plus for a bracket for one shot when there is no budget and may never need it again? No. Am I willing to build one that looks like garbage but gets the job done for a fraction of the price? Absolutely!

The space is far far different than before you left. Throw mid roll ads in there and make it so you can sustain yourself on here. Making videos isn’t easy, watching a mid roll ad or two isn’t much to ask for for videos you put out there for everyone for free.

As far as content suggestions go, budget build challenges are fun. You could give yourself a certain budget or even just try to use random things you have to accomplish a certain goal or build a piece of equipment. Talk with Dave as well. He’s been really getting into Tik Tok but has been regularly posting on here again. A way to revisit older videos could be to rebuild older designs and see if they still hold up today or if you’d change them. I’d start with whatever older video is retaining the most momentum then throw the new one in the end screen of the old one. There’s a lot you can do to build momentum again. Always happy to help if you want to reach out. I’m only at 11k, but my channels getting almost 200k views/month.

I loved the pvc stuff and built a few of the cages myself. But times change and gear is cheap now. What are you into these days? Make videos on that. You'll get a new following. Now that we have the frugal gear we need to make frugal short films. BTS of short films is the way to go I think.

Fewer than 2k views in three and a half years, not good. I mostly do not turn notifications on, they are annoying and never occur when I want to watch a video. I do check regularly. I am here for DIY. Not your fiction or video making. Your channel should stick to one activity. Hardly anyone uses Vegas Pro, people interested in DIY actives are probably not interested in learning your approach to making videos. If you want to share your "profession" work, that's for another channel. If you want to discuss making that professional work, that's another different channel. This video doesn't seem to be either planned or scripted You need to fix that, after your studies I'm puzzled you don't do this. I would find DIY props interesting, it's not so far from DIY gear. If you do this, use it as an opportunity to make the best videos you can. Griffin Hammond made a documentary as a self-funded project, and his demonstration of his skills got heaps of work subsequently. I would expect that your viewer numbers are low in comparison with your subscriber numbers because I would not expect individual videos to appeal to everyone. I'm subscribed to Keith Cooper, Anthony Morganti, Casey Faris, but I certainly do not watch all their videos.
