Danny's little crisis over the offhand soundbite of him going viral when he' d previously put in so much work and effort trying to do just that in the past reminds me of artists online who put a ton of work and time into drawings and digital paintings that only get a bit of attention, and then have little doodles or short comics go viral. It's a funny (if often frustrating) phenomenon that I personally think has to do with relatability and the appreciation of simplicity due to its inherent charm.

Fun Fact: The small hag on the chest of the sleeping people is a Mare. It's a folklore and it brings nightmares and sometimes even kills its victims while they are sleeping. It has many different forms/variations and names like the by Danny mentioned hag. And it is probably the word origin for Nightmare = Night + mare. Alp is another name for the mare. The German word for Nightmare is Alptraum. Alp + dream = Alptraum

Interesting we call it "můra" pronounced "moor-a" and we have the same word for a moth, because moths bring bad news at night
@dinospumoni56112 жыл бұрын
The Night Hag is a super interesting phenomenon. It's actually the etymology of the term "nightmare". "Nightmare" originally referred to sleep paralysis hallucinations of this mythological figure specifically. The original meaning of "mare" is "to crush" referring to the common feeling of being crushed and unable to move or breathe during these experiences.
@MasoTrumoi2 жыл бұрын
Also worth noting that Mare as a term for demon is drawn from Old Norse, while Mare as a term for horses is from a Celtic word. So it's a coincidence caused by the mixed roots of English. But then D&D made a pun that a Nightmare was an evil horse and now that's part of modern fantasy lexicon.

about the old hag: in swedish folklore there's the mara, a female spirit that sits on people's chests and rides them as they dream(like, rides on their chest, not in a sexual way) making it difficult to breathe this creates nightmares and even gives us the swedish word "mardröm" which used to just mean the kind of dream where you wake up unable to breathe because of a perceived weight on your chest. in later years, it just started meaning "nightmare"

once my friend was talking about his sleep paralysis but was referring to it like "you know when you" and I told him "no man, I've never had sleep paralysis personally" and he legit got angry like "everyone has sleep paralysis wtf" and I had to explain that only some people get it, I just don't get it, never happened lol probably because I can't even achieve real deep sleep most of the time. The closest thing I've ever experienced to "sleep paralysis" wasn't scary and just left me slightly confused. I woke up, waited a minute with my eyes closed, and I felt "hands" crawling over my chest, like if you could imagine a small child climbing into your bed, but for some reason they decided to crawl right over your ribcage. My first thought was "huh, my little brother must be scared and came to sleep in my room again", but then I remembered I'm 31 and my little brother is 27 and twice my size, so who tf's tiny little child hands are on my chest? I opened my eyes and all I saw was my ceiling but I still felt the shape of hands on me. I wasn't parelyzed but I tried to say "stop" or something and it came out like more of a groan since I just woke up, and I sat up, and the feeling left. It was weird but that's all, but nothing has ever kept me frozen in my bed when I wake up, I'm usually ready to immediately get up even if I'm tired and wish I could sleep in.

I've had sleep paralysis, like, twice. One of the times was just me staring at the ceiling and trying to move my limbs. There was no shadow figures. No hat man or old hag. Just me, my ceiling, and my inability to move. The other time I was laying on my side instead of my back and was looking at myself in my full-length mirror. Nothing creepy happened. Same thing as before expect this time I could see myself.

That’s honestly pretty funny that he assumed everyone gets sleep paralysis. I get it sometimes (don’t see figures most of the time tho, I did once think my roommate walked into my room and just kinda paced around and left but that wasn’t real lmao) I was surprised when I found out when I was young that other people get it too. Only happens for me when I sleep over 8 hours and I’m usually sleeping on my back but not always

7:09 just for context on this, people with paranoia, schizophrenia, or sleep paralysis can experience an onset of symptoms due to seeing things that their brain perceives as similar to things they experience during episodes. it's not a trigger warning, but a content warning, because it's letting people know it has that type of content, and not because it's a triggering subject.
