I have a question my good man. I have a 06 iMac, the only command it will use is option key. It immediately goes to lock with box to enter firmware password. I enter password and then gray screen nothing else. Do you have any advice? Thanks

I had one of these old iMac's, 24" 2006 model, imac6,1. The Snow Leopard OS is obsolete and no longer supported. I can't get onto the app store either. Even the browsers are not supported for it. Basically it's a boat anchor. An expensive boat anchor. It will play DVDs and hold photos, that's about it. I finally figured out how to put Ubuntu on it. That's what I'm using right now and it's running a current version of Firefox. Ubuntu is awkward and complicated but at least it's not a boat anchor now. I plan on upgrading the drive. That's why I'm here. Looking for info. I have it on dual boot, MacOs on one partition and Ubuntu on the other. The graphics card is obsolete and I understand that can't be updated. I did a power supply repair about 5 years ago on it before I moth-balled it. Now I'm bringing it back with a different OS.

I have the same machine. I upgraded the CPU, put an SSD and upgraded the RAM. I use it to sync and restore iPods. I love the machine for just that. Lion will run on these but Snow Leopard is the sweet spot for these.

Nice upgrade. Did a similar thing about 5 years ago. Had three 20” 2006 iMacs and one 17” 2006 iMac. The 17” had a broken screen so used it for parts for the others. Used its superdrive to replace the broken one on one of the 20” iMacs and replaced the mechanical drive on another with a new SSD. I hope you replaced the CR 2032 battery for the PRAM while you were at it ;-) Too bad you didn’t show removing the back panel. It’s supposed to be straight forward but was quite challenging even with a proper “card tool”. Also had to replace some RAM modules. I believe I used some high quality double sided tape to secure the SSD drive rather than a proper bracket. I think these machines have a max of 3 GB RAM (one 1 GB module and one 2 GB module) so even if you install 2x 2GB modules, the OS will not see the last 1GB. I kept my OS at 10.6.8 because starting with Lion (10.7) Apple discontinued support for Rosetta which was required to run older PC Power apps.

I don't know tbh. This one I ended up re-installing but took a while to find a disc operating system.
