On review, perhaps I didn’t capture my thoughts on Spirit as clearly as I might like! In brief: 1) Beware the 18 kilo baggage allowance - it’s quite low considering you have to pay for bags 2) Big front seats are a game changer! 3) Probably wouldn’t actively seek out Spirit again but I also wouldn’t avoid them either. 4) My fare was quite high but do remember I take these flights to make videos of the experience - a lot of Spirit routes have genuinely low fares. Remember America isn’t like Europe for dirt cheap deals, air travel is much more a fundamental need for the average American and the prices reflect this.

That's NOT flying spirit. You need to be sitting in the back with the chickens and goats and peasants in those lawn chairs hoping the plane crashes to immediately end the misery that is now your life in the back of a giant yellow airplane because that would be a far better release than the remaining two hours of hell you must endure in that tissue paper for a cushion chair, only to have a stewardess come by and throw salt in your wound by offering you $5 cup-o-noodles and quarters to use the pay-to-flush toilets. Wait my bad, I just ranted about allegiant airlines (the hill billy cousin that Spirit is dating - they are one in the same).

Having just flown Spirit in sardine class a couple days ago, I can say that it honestly wasn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Cabin was clean, staff were friendly, and the flight wasn’t delayed. Yes the seat isn’t the most comfy, but it’s a budget airline, so you can’t expect all of the accommodations that come with other airlines. 7.7/10 I would have no problem flying with them again.

Then it might be fine, but if you're a tall person, or have more than just a carry-on maybe, be prepared to pay a hefty charge--even if you pay for your bags when you book. We've done a few trips on Spirit now and I have to say I have the same opinion you do. All the dire warnings about how bad they are are unwarranted. As long as you know what you're getting when you go in (i.e. the charges and baggage allowance) and the fact that your seating will be a bit tight, you're OK. We only did short 1:45 hops from Hartford-Myrtle Beach, and I would probably not do anything longer … that 28 inch seat pitch gets uncomfortable after a short while! Also need to bear in mind that if your booked flight is cancelled or seriously delayed, Spirit cannot put you on another flight because they do not have nearly the frequency in schedules nor back up equipment and crews nor ticketing agreements with other airlines. So, if your flight gets cancelled, you are just stuck until either the next Spirit fight (likely the next day or later) or buying a last-minute ticket on another carrier.

The one time I flew Spirit I flew from Minnesota and Texas. I am 6 feet tall, and I could not sit comfortably in the seat. Either I had to awkwardly keep my knees on the seat in front of me (digging into that person's back) or sit crookedly and stick my knees in the aisle. I agree with you, every single Crew member I encountered was wonderful, but after paying for so many basic things, I paid pretty much the same as a trip on an airline with additional leg room and amenities.

My wife and I fly between Detroit and Guatemala City several times a year. We are missionaries and are on a limited budget so we fly Spirit economy. We are members of the $9 fare club and so we qualify for certain perks that would otherwise cost us more. Granted the seats are uncomfortable compared to first class, but the extremely low fares make up for it. We get emails regularly with discount codes so we can save even more. The big drawback is the added cost for extra carry on bags. It doesn't take too many to extra bags to ruin the otherwise great deal. As missionaries we like to bring donations of clothes shoes and toys down with us but the high cost of additional bags can make that cost prohibitive.

Like you, I booked the big front seats on both flights, plus I also paid for hold baggage, yet I still paid less than the other carriers wanted for the same routes...plus I got "first class" seats to boot!

Flown Spirit dozens of time, virtually all big front seat. In 2 weeks , I go New Orleans from Vegas,(3 hours) for $69 with big front an extra $60, which was cheaper then Southwest. It also has the newest fleets of America's airlines. But, if not big seat available, I often go with other airlines. My son is going to San Diego from Vegas for $27 each way next weekend, cheaper then gas. So, it is worth a look, go with big front seat , I have been as happy with Spirit as Southwest , picking the latter when I have 2 bags as they are free.. Took Frontier last Sunday, Miami to Vegas, all cheap seats, was rough day.

My son and I just flew Spirit for the first time last month and we sat in the back. Although it was a bit of a tight fit, we really enjoyed our flight. We flew to Orlando from Ohio so it was only a 2 hr flight. We may opt for the front seats next time so we have a bit more leg room. I liked that Spirit has low fares so I have nothing bad to say about them at all.

Spirit Airlines is the Ryanair of America. I think you lucked out with your good experience. I've flown Spirit twice (ATL-EWR both) and both experiences were shite. The first time I flew economy and at 5'11" the legroom was too tight for me and very uncomfortable. The add-ons (which are necessary) jacked the fare up to more expensive than Delta or United. The aircraft on each leg were new but the cabins were dirty, and the flight attendants seemed used to dealing with a lower class of people and were not friendly. The second trip I paid for a "Big Front" and that solved the legroom problem, but the cabins were still dirty, my seat was broken and didn't fully recline, the FA's were still rude and the return flight was delayed for reasons the gate crew refused to elaborate on (weather along the route was good). Most Spirit passengers are similar to Ryanair passengers - hard drinking and not used to flying on a regular basis, and some of them behaved very badly. Both Spirit flights reinforced my opinion that alcohol should be banned from the skies entirely, both inside the terminal and on board the aircraft.

What do you mean that FA are rude? are you expecting that it is an open bar or a restaurant ? Are you expecting that FA will serve you whatever you want? An airplane is not an open bar or restaurant. The primarily purpose of FA is for the passengers safety. Did you have high expectations on high service on a cheap flight? What is your definition of rude? You could watch Joel and Lia video channel and see their point of view what the level of service is in UK and US.

“Most spirit passengers are similar to Ryanair passengers” what is this supposed to mean? Grow up. Ryanair and others, wizz, easyjet etc are fantastic airlines, low fares giving people the chance to visit family, explore other parts of Europe and so on for very reasonable prices. Yes, maybe the service is relatively basic, sometimes bags get lost, delays happen but same applies to every other airline in the world so whatever. I’ve taken 50+ such flights so far this year.99.9% of Ryanair passengers are regular people wanting to get from from A to B as quickly and cheaply as possible, whether they are used to flying or not I neither know nor care. Get a grip, count yourself lucky you are in a position to fly at all

I used to fly Delta exclusively until a friend recommended Spirit with the big front seat. I fly weekly for work and typically pay 3X less for Spirit. The only knock I have on Spirit is no WiFi yet (which is coming soon), the big front seats do not recline, and their Mobil app is terrible. If they get those three items worked out they would quickly complete with the big boy carriers... Just my two cents....

The route between Denver and LA is great for window seat flyers, tons of great scenery. You will always get the rocky mountains in and out of Denver and outbound flights to the west will usually pass over either Mount Evans or Pikes peak, and inbound flights from the west will usually pass directly over Rocky Mountain National park and Longs Peak. Depending on routing you may also pass over the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell and Lake Mead, and you can often get decent views of Las Vegas too.

Like it or not this business model is the way of the future. Just look where United was in 1950 compared to where it is now. As much as people complain, they vote with their wallets, and the ULCC airlines are growing like absolute wildfire. I remember reading an article in the early 2000’s when the Priceline and Expedia aggregating sites started to come out. The majority of people would buy by ticket price with virtually no regard to airline, connections, or aircraft type. As someone who has traveled more than just about anyone on all the different US carriers, I think they all have issues. I could tell stories until my face turns blue, but I’ll summarize it by saying in many respects the majors are as bad if not worse than Spirit. At least Spirit is honest and upfront regarding their fees, seat map, etc.

I've flown spirit nonstop SAN to BWI multiple times mainly because they did the redeye. Five hours in those seats is not fun but tolerable if you can plan in advance and snag an exit row seat . Bring your own food and drink on the plane, and be smart about carryons. I found the flight crew to be professional and courteous and the prices amazingly cheap. Round trip at certain times of the year under 250 dollars. The Big Seat option is definitely cheating.lol
