not having pudding is my struggle in a relationship with my Chinese husband. We live in china, so eat more Chinese food and after almost 4 years he still doesn't get why I need at least a tiny square of chocolate after dinner. They do eat fruits though after dinner, as a pudding, but let's make it clear - it's not the same.

I dont know how you make such different cultures work in a relationship like that, I'd struggle, friendship is fine, but to marry, don't think I could. I struggled with the differences in a relationship with the boyfriend I had, and we were from the same culture, and that was plenty difference for me. I'd especially struggle if they didn't care to understand my own needs and favoured only their own

We had a Korean teacher at school, she ran a Korean cooking club and would teach us to make different things like dumplings and fun things like that then once a month she would come in on a Saturday (I went to boarding school) and we would all cook a Korean meal for dinner, our favourite was one dish we would call red chicken, she would make a super spicy traditional version and then a milder version for anyone who couldn’t hack the spice. I also had a Korean room mate who would bring noodles and snack back to school and they were so good!

I clicked on this video so fast! I've been living in Korea for 2.5 years as an English teacher. I love your enthusiasm to try and make Korean food! A suggestion for a way to amp up the chicken recipe: melt mozzarella cheese over the top of the chicken! It's often eaten that way here (I've actually never seen it in a wrap form). Koreans don't typically have dessert right at the end of their meal but they do eat lots of snacks and desserts. I saw a lot of common snacks at the Korean mart you went to! Kancho (kind of like chocolate filled pastry puff), 칙촉 (chocolate chip cookies), 빅파이 (strawberry jam between two kind of biscuits), and choco pies (two cakes with marshmallow between and covered in chocolate) are delicious!

pro tips: the dakgalbi can be easily elevated with sliced cabbage and/or carrots stir fried in, and you can even try swapping out chicken for different types of protein like sliced pork belly or beef slices! and of course, kimchi is a staple side dish for any korean meal. you did a really great job though! it makes me so happy to see you trying new things and getting your family in on it too; can't wait to see you making more asian dishes!

As a Korean I approve! I'm sure other comments have said this but your dad is right about the cabbage wrap thing - people actually eat dak-galbi (the chicken dish you made) often with chopped up cabbage stewed with the chicken, and with potatoes too. Cabbages are often blanched and used as a wrap as well, but I much prefer lettuce.

You could have teokbokki or street foods and hotteok and basically sugar/taffy and rice cakes and other traditonal desserts that are usual hd with tea or on special occasions are sweet. Often rice based with a sort of sweet bean or bean powder or brown sugar depends on lots of things. A lot of their dessert stuff is either western modern things OR originally chinese or japanese like fish shaped bun fairy floss sorta stuff i mean one of their most famous and sorta cultural dishes is chinese black bean noodle and its like a traditon to have it when you move i believe i mightve mixed it up but its also tradition to hand out rice cakes (not the health food popped rice kind but the squishy mochi type kind) to neighbours etc when moving and also at new year

The thought of having rice for breakfast is soo fascinating to me! Like being British it just seems so strange so it's crazy to imagine that that is just the norm for so many! Though I know for sure I would enjoy rice and soy sauce for breakfast and any time of day as I absolutely just loovee rice and soy sauce and veggies! So simple but so good and satisfying 😍😍🤤👌🙌 it really does fascinate me so much seeing how different cultures and foods are all over the world! So interesting! 🙌💕 This has actually kind of inspired me to challenge myself and do something like this like just eating more unique and culturally diverse dishes for a whole day, especially for breakfast though (as I do eat quite a lot of Asian inspired meals and flavours daily) and I bet it would really get your day off to a good and fulfilling start! 😊🙌💕 But have got some really good ideas from this that I want to try myself and incorporate on a daily! Particularly the lettuce wraps I have seen them around a lot lately and had been really considering trying it so I guess this was another sign that I need to! Haha looks so good! 😍🤤 I just adore that crunch! 😍👌🙌

Disclaimer: I am not Korean, but I lived there for 2 years, so here is my observation: It's really unusual to have just doenjang jjigae as a full meal. Typically Koreans would have a few side dishes (called banchan). These are usually things like kimchi and other pickled vegetables, Korean green onion (called "pa") or bean sprouts with sesame oil, or even something a bit more hearty like a jeon (a savory pancake). For the anchovies, there is a black spot just under the gills on the bottom of the fish. That's where the intestines are and they can make your stock really bitter if you leave them in, so I usually cut it out. I also usually put the fish in a tea strainer or cheese cloth bag to make it easier to take out of the soup. I think this recipe here is more complete: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4Oyq3aDrNGbgK8 It's funny that your family mentioned cabbage with the Dakgalbi, because in restaurants in Korea the dakgalbi is usually fried with cabbage, sweet potatoes, and these awesome chewy rice cakes called ddak. You can find a recipe here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJTZYoGYm8qkhNk If you're going to try out new recipes some of my favorite dishes in Korea were kimchi jeon (kimchi pancakes), kimchi jjim (braised pork and kimchi), dolsot bibimbap (various items mixed with rice and an egg in a hot stone bowl), and japchae (a noodle dish with vegetables and sesame oil. You should also consider making kimbap, which is the go-to picnic food of korea, or ddakbokki, the go-to street food of Korea. For something that I found very different from my usually fare, try mul nangmyeon - an iced noodle soup. I'm not at all accustomed to cold soup, so it was a bit odd. As for snacks - there are a plethora. Lots of crisps - mostly prawn-flavored. And there are desserts, particularly ones with red beans. One in particular is Patbingsu, an elaborate shaved ice, fruit, condensed milk, and ice cream confection. They're not usually eaten after a meal, but split between friends after school or work. Ovens weren't really introduced into most Korean homes until the 20th century, and are still not common, so, while there are bakeries all over, not many people bake at home, and baked desserts are still a little rare. Instead, sweets are typically steamed or fried. Most Koreans finish a meal with sweet instant coffee or green tea or sometimes fruit, and save the sweets for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack. For better or for worse, some Korean food is heavily influenced by the American military, which has been there since the end of World War II. Spam is a common holiday gift, American style spongy white bread is the most common type of bread available, and there are hot dogs in all kinds of bizarre foods. I could go on and on about Korean food, but it's already an essay. I do hope you try a few new recipes though. Enjoy!

Hey grackle! I love your themed food vids esp the history ones and have learnt so much about food history! I think in a way you are a food historian, and giving knowledge to the people :) I am just finishing a degree in history now and have a terrible memory 😂😂 but it’s just about being open minded and seeing the big picture

I love Korean food! I've been trying so many recipes lately, my latest one (not very healthy) was chappaguri. I had it with pickled radish and it was delicious 😋 I also love bibimbap and kimchi fried rice
