My Cancer Journey

Күн бұрын

After a long time of complaining about abdominal pain and being ignored by doctors, the proper testing was finally ordered. I learned that I had cancer from my review of a CT scan and there were many tumors. I have cancer and I’m scared. I hope to take everyone along with me on my journey to find a cure.

Its crazy. Sometimes you see this cancer vlogs where they happen over a period of 7 years and the person is still alive. Other times like this, it happens so fast. My guess is she let the pain go on for way too long without being diagnosed. People need to learn from her mistakes and get yourself checked out if you're having random pain that does NOT go away after a few months, especially when its abdominal or lower back. Get it checked out people!

I agree! I have MS and was misdiagnosed for the first 2 1/2 years. I now have permanent damage that caused me to be disabled because I went untreated for so long. Had I been treated correctly from the start I could have be living a normal life. I’m so tired of doctors not believing us and being told something is in my head. That’s not the only time it’s happened to me either. So sad and frustrating.

Absolutely right! There needs to be some type of advocacy, awareness speaking out, against making a public aware, that we as people who are afflicted with these illnesses trust our doctors to diagnosis and most doctors don’t pay attention! They shrug it off as this they shrug it off as that! In my husband’s case with pancreatic cancer it took them over 15 years to diagnose him!! He went to the doctor and many doctors over again with complaining of issues of heartburn and middle stomach pain in back pain in a little bit of nausea fatigue and digestive issues and they never diagnosed him properly they always said ulcer acid reflux gets poor diet it’s stress! They should be able to be sued specially when you went to 7 Different doctors over 15 years and none of them got it right! Until the day that the tumor was so huge and his stools were nearly white and his pee was like tea and he was jaundice! That’s what it took for somebody to run some test and diagnosed him properly! And on top of that, the doctor that diagnosed him was a retired doctor that was filling in for his original MD!! I’m still furious today, four years later after he passed 😤

***** Tip for anyone trying to get their doctor to investigate something they're worried about. If you ask for ANY test and the doctor refuses ask the doctor directly to DOCUMENT their refusal in writing in your medical chart. If they refuse to do this then go into your patient portal and send a note to the Dr. saying that you requested this test and it was refused on whatever date you talked with the Dr about it. Any Dr. with half a brain will realize this could be setting them up for a malpractice lawsuit. Guess what? Your chances of getting that test are a whole lot better than before you made them put their refusal in writing.

Your story mirrored my own in many ways. Two years of constant pain and the doctors didn't believe me. It was at times excruciating pain. Eventually got a real diagnosis -- five pound tumor. Ovarian cancer. Got treatment, was told I was fine and within six months was diagnosed with 4th stage bone cancer. My sister-in-law came to care for me during chemo and radiation and kept saying to me, "don't worry - a few years from now this will be a blip on your radar." I held on to that belief. I'm in my fifth year of remission after being told I had two weeks to live. You can do this! It's not fun. It's a huge personal challenge. You will be in my thoughts. And when you come out the other side it will become a blip on the radar of your life.

Ovarian cancer needs to be ruled out when all females complain of abdominal pain. You were gaslighted by the doctors. We need more women doctors. Maria, I just found you tonight. I will be listening to all of your videos and follow your journey. Most hospitals have specialized cancer support groups. There is a ton of knowledge in those groups. Abdominal pain is very common. And it's the area which is most prone to psychosomatic pain, as the stomach functions as an emotional hub, it's why you get "butterflies" in your stomach etc. It's a sad fact but medical tests are expensive and time-consuming, and Doctors don't like providing them unless there's good reason. It's all about money. Meanwhile, the rich can pay for annual, full body health checkups.

Sometimes DOCTORS can just aggravate the situation. You are stressed because you know there is something wrong and just because they can't find the problem they tell the patient you're not really sick, seriously. They blame the patient! OMG, that is not okay! Be your own advocate and don't back down! Get a 2nd opinion too if you feel uncertain. Thank you for posting. Sorry you went through that and hope everything else will go ahead smoothly.

These "doctors" need to be punished, in my humble opinion. My mother was diagnosed with stage III C of ovarian cancer and the doctors were quite negligent too, but I have to tell you that my mother is free of cancer for around 8 years now. So be strong, positive, look at what you are eating and drinking, go organic, drink green tea, eat turmeric and tons of veggies, leave sugar and do some sports. You can do it dear!!!! 💪💪💪🙌🙌

I had uterine cancer last year and underwent a radical hysterectomy. I was lucky in the sense that my symptom was obvious (vaginal bleeding post menopause). It makes me so angry when doctors brush off symptoms especially when its suggested that they are in our heads or that a patient is too young. Ovarian cancer can present in so many ways and at different ages. Why don't they investigate for ovarian cancer first through MRI's, CT scans etc? If it's not ovarian cancer, then treat for something else.
@MyCancerJourneyMaria
@MyCancerJourneyMaria Жыл бұрын
You bring up a good point. I suspect the insurance companies don't want to pay for the MRIs and CT scans. However, given the fact that the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer are also associated with late-stage cancer, I would think that imaging is a small cost to pay as compared to a life and the cost of the treatments I am receiving now.
@anglophils645

Your primary care doctor did ultimately order a CT scan, that found your cancer.. The thing for women to do, is if your primary care doctor tells you you're okay, and you still have symptoms, go to your ob-gyn. You can have an ultra-sound there, which can easily find ovarian or uterine abnormalities. Primary care doctors do not have ultra-sound available in their offices. And because ovarian cancer is relatively rare, striking only one in eighty women, a primary care doctor is going to think in terms of GI ailments, like irritable bowel syndrome, etc, which are so much more common. Ob-gyn's are going to think in terms of cancer, much faster.

I also have just read of her passing. I have asked for years (to myself) why we have to see these doctors that dismiss us and treat us like we're whining or making a big deal out of nothing. I currently have postmenopausal bleeding after 10 years of menopause. Could be nothing, but will be seeing another NEW GYN in less than 2 weeks. I am already preparing to be brushed off and dismissed. How sick is that? My internal medicine doctor is more caring, but she doesn't do GYN exams. So I'll go see this one and if I feel like things are off I'll go back to my internal med doctor and push for care.

I am so sorry to watch this, the ascites is usually a late stage symptom , and means the cancer is advanced, my beloved partner passed after a two year two month battle with inoperable liver cancer, Treatment was only palliative, I miss him every second, he too was young and fit. I hope they offer you surgery after chemo. X

God Bless you…. I hope you go back to the doctors who kept assuring you all was well. They need to look at your eyes and realize they should have heard you, and dug deeper. It may prevent others from going thru what you are. Having said this, I persisted for several months like you did, and demanded an MRI. They said they couldn’t because there was nothing wrong with me. But I insisted there was. The best they could do was give me a core needle biopsy which came back positive for cancer. I pray for you. So much can be done. Seems every week there are incredible advances. Use every arrow in the quiver your treatment center gives you. Keep exercising. It is very effective in the fight. As someone said to me back then, “you are a bad-ass warrior now!” God Bless You!!! 💕💕

In remission, 9 years. Don’t know if doctors even use cancer free words. But they said, we poisoned it, cut it out of you. At some point we have to hope we killed it. ( I do take an “anti cancer” pill which is another weapon. And they test and scan me every six months, for which I am grateful.

Im sorry to hear this, you can do this! Its also chilling hearing how little progress is made in this field, a woman i knew a decade ago from England started having abdominal pain right after her firm sent her to Dubai to work for a year. She also got brushed off when she kept going back to doctors, with reasons like ah its just your body reacting to the different climate and other things, never got properly checked out before the pain continued when she came back home

I typically do very well advocating for myself but that appointment where I was told the pain was in my head really set me back. I would start talking about my symptoms and the doctor would start talking over me. I tried to clarify some things that he would say, only for him to disregard it. I am still so angry about that appointment because there’s no way he should have missed the tumors in my abdomen and his treatment of me was an abomination.

My Dad had Barrets Esophagus an illness linked with cancer. Supposedly he had annual checks for just this. After he began finding it difficult to swollow he went to the doc and they did tests and got the horrible news he had esophageal cancer, terminal. He was given 2 years which was about right. I find it hard to believe this cancer just popped up and spread that severely between checks but what can you do? Not that it would change anything. There are so many things I wish I had said. He raised myself and 2 siblings on his own and I feel I took this for granted now realizing just how much he dedicated to giving us a good life. I regret not taking his offers to go camping during the summer thinking I can do that anytime. Cancer sucks.

I think doctors don’t pay as much attention to women’s health complaints as much as they do to their male patients. My Mother had ovarian cancer in the 70’s and I can remember the doctor thinking it was her gallbladder. She had her gallbladder removed which was unnecessary. I’ve lived with a chronic Leukemia for almost 14 years. I had a male Oncologist until he moved from the area, and now I have a female Oncologist. I know many people won’t agree with me, but through the years, I have found women doctors are better listeners. I’m sending you well wishes and a speedy recovery.🌸

Doctors teach women to be dismissive of symptoms. I was completely dismissive of symptoms that clearly were heart failure and kidney disease. I was told my tests were all normal but they actually were not. My Dr just didn't think the problems on the tests were worth addressing. So I spent 5 years not changing my diet, not exercising not keeping up with weight and before I knew it I had TEN pounds of fluid in my body. I'm so sorry you were dismissed . It's so wrong.

I am so sorry. I’m a 14 year colon cancer survivor, recently Dx with incurable forms of lymphoma & leukemia. No treatment as of yet. And hopefully not for a long time, if ever. It’s mind boggling. Last month I had an oophrectomy. There was a mass on one of my ovaries that could have become cancer had it been left in. I too had to leave my career (therapist/counselor) due to health issues, prior to this Dx. Cancer can be very isolating, even with an awesome support system. There are protections that you may also receive as a result of your diagnosis, so I urge you to try to contact someone to get some assistance. It's just so wrong that they won't renew because of the income drop - talk about kicking someone when they are down. Sending you positive vibes, energy and healing.
