I'm 21 years older than you. It doesn't get easier. Your parts (like your knees, hips, etc.) get older. If you don't keep moving, they will fall apart. I work part-time in a retail setting, doing stock work as part of my "workout routine." Moving cases of water is more motivating for me than lifting free weights. Squatting down for the bottom shelves and reaching up to stock top shelves are a real workout! Up and down stepladders, pulling and pushing, pallets, as long as I stick with part-time, it gives me the workout I need plus they pay me to do it! This is not practical or possible for everyone, but it works for me.

I work part time at a school, and walk and stand for three hours. That’s my cardio! I do strength workouts three times a week. I do more workouts on school breaks.

@@sherryg1838 @JuliHoffman I'm nearly 57 and I clean houses and a couple commercial accounts (with 2 of my daughters) and that keeps me moving a fair amount . I also roller skate with some of my kids (youngest is 14, oldest is 27 and there's 5 in between - many of which come to skate) nearly every week at the skate rink. I need to do more consistent cardio and also do weight/strength training on a regular basis. I'm motivated more now from Ariel's video. I recently read Dr. Peter Attia's book, and THAT strikes a chord!! I highly recommend it.

This is not workout, this is like as it should be (full of movement). Workout is INTENTIONAL, so you get stronger, more fit and able to move without injury, improve your hormones and mood. There’s something right about working out just like there’s something right about moving along the day. But these are 2 different things.

​@@innerworker There's evidence now that lots of micro movements throughout the day are more important than you'd think. It all adds up over time, and I would think is healthier than a desk job + super stressful cardio at the end of the day.

@@GAwildflower , yes, I’ve seen the papers too. But one doesn’t exclude the other. Different purposes, both beneficial though.

As a 59 year old, I can attest to the difference between losing weight at 29 and losing weight at 59. Do it now. Noooooow. Your 29-year -old skin is still supercharged with hormones and collagen, etc, that will help your figure literally snap back into shape. At 59, your skin is less resilient, so even though the health benefits of weight loss are good at any age, the outcome is, um, prettier the younger you start working on it. Your video on this subject was excellent!

I exercised consistently for many years until essential tremors entered my life in my early 60s. The exercises I had enjoyed suddenly became tremors on steroids to the point where I stopped exercising completely. I was so discouraged. I didn't feel or look the way I wanted to. I finally got to the point where I was searching the internet for exercises for people who shake. I only got results for belly dancing. I decided that if I'm going to shake I might as well try shaking for exercise. I spent a week researching belly dancing, chose a belly dance style, and purchased a "how to" dvd and a belly dance music cd. I fell in love with it. I'm 71 and still use it for my exercise.

I'm just about to turn 60 and used to be a semi professional bellydancer. It's a great firm if exercise and a lot of fun. If, and obviously I don't know your circumstances, you are able and thetecare classes nearby, try a class. It's a very welcoming tribe of thin, fat, healthy, not so healthy dancers. Shimmy on sister❤

I'm a retired professor and I always taught my students: there are 2 basic things that motivate us to do whatever we do: 1. the pursuit of pleasure and 2. the relief or avoidance of pain - and when pitted against each other, relieving or avoiding pain wins every time. You hit the nail on the head!! I've also learned a 3rd thing that is very motivating - and that is success. I have no desire to engage in an activity that is likely to fail, but I am excited to repeat something that was successful! So, in that regard, I create reachable goals, which further inspires me. This applies to everything - fitness, cleaning, income taxes, you name it. Excellent video!!👍👍👍

1-Relief or Avoidance of pain? That's why we can't exercise. It's a pain I want to avoid. 2-Pleasure I can agree with, and exercise is not pleasurable. 3-Success I agree with too but I'd have to define what success was and that would be hard. 4- Consequences , if early death isn't enough what else is! 5- ... waiting

When I was pregnant with my second baby, my doctor showed me some studies about how exercising thirty minutes a day (brisk walking, swimming, etc) really made a difference not only in the mother’s health, but her baby’s as well. Babies were born more toned, placenta looked much healthier, and mother’s recovery was improved. That was enough for me! I stayed consistent, walking at least thirty minutes every day, sometimes more when I felt up to it. That’s been a long time ago, but I do remember I was motivated for the health of my baby.

Yes!! Im 25 weeks pregnant with my 3rd. For 10 years, i was a competitive boxer. I boxed, not as rigourous until my 7th trimester with my 2nd child. This pregnancy, i walk nearly everyday. Some days im gung-ho about house work. Other days, i walk and on my feet. The feet swelling has already begun and im so sad. Its hard to be on my feet when my skin feels like its about to spilt apart. ADHD makes motivation tough ond unreliable.

The only "C" I ever got in high school was in P.E. Many years later, nothing has changed. What works for me is just committing to short workouts....and I mean short. I call it my "better than nothing workout."

@Shiryone oh that's wild! All my regular PE classes, the teachers just gave our A's if you gave it even the barest minimum. I did take an athletics course that had grades based on personal improvement, but that's it. Sorry that you had to deal with pe teachers who were so strict. That would make it harder to enjoy the class.

I’m right there. My only B in high school was in PE. I couldn’t learn to do a cartwheel. Of course it was devastating because I wanted to have straight As. I never really thought about how this impacted my view of exercising going g forward. But I’m a lot overweight/obese now.

I'm 55. I finally got consistent when I divorced my motivation from weight loss. I had to craft a better why, and being concerned about bone density and losing strength did the trick. I lift weights 3 times a week, walk daily, and sprinkle in movement that feels good throughout the week. I never weigh myself. I just focus on feeling good and fitting into my clothes. I never diet, but I tweak things a bit if my pants begin to feel tight. So far, so good. I really want to stay independent as I age. I never want to become a burden due to my family because I was too lazy now.

Love this!! That was my only gripe with this video: the focus on weight loss. That is never going to be a consistent, healthy motivator and spirals to unhealthy cycles so fast. Not to mention the fact that a thin person can be way more unhealthy than a middle sized person. It's all about how you move and feel

In my teen I was always trying to lose weight (looking back I feel like smacking myself, I NEEDED that weight to GROW) but I was never able to stay consistent. I’m 20 now (I know, barely out of my teens) but I’ve been diagnosed with a disability that affects my tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. My body is struggling to hold itself together and if I don’t step it up and get consistent with my health, I may never be able to work or have kids or travel or live a long life. I think that may be enough to motivate me this time. The past few weeks have been terrifying and stressful, but I almost feel like a stone whose strength is being tested by life. I’m not going to lie down and give up.

I've only learned as an adult that I have ADHD. That means I have DOPAMINE DEFICIENCY! And new activities do get old fast. It's how my brain works! And I've had to accept that perhaps, I cannot meet my goals in the same WAY as others. People with ADHD or other brain differences might have to work smarter, not harder. Accountability doesn't solve the problem. "Consequences" doesn't fix the root either! The answer is to keep the dopamine flowing - focus on a sport or activity that you actually LIKE. If it's not FUN, I know it's not sustainable for me! And the more options I have, the better - my brain seeks novelty. Exercise in itself is great for dopamine production. I do need it! But "working out" is not my thing, and I am never going to magically become the person who "works out" every day. However, I CAN - swim, do yard work, walk the dog, do yoga, zumba, go for a hike.... there's LOTS of options and it doesn't need to be the same dry routine with a certain # of situps every day!!!

Yes! Thank you for saying this! My son and I have ADHD. I’ve figured out what drives my dopamine. I love specific podcasts and music. I walk 3-5 miles a day with a hot coffee and a great podcast. Or I run with songs that make it impossible to not move. I lose myself in hyper focus and indulge in the moment. The same works for me when I do chores. I keep a podcast on and the work flows. And I know I have to switch up my strategy often because my hyper focus changes. Being flexible and keeping things interesting really is the key. You’re so right - find the thing that triggers your dopamine response and pair it with the activity or habit you want to do more of.

@@lizloukiss I'm not ADHD and I get SO BORED with workouts! Getting a treadmill and a desk that raises up so I can use my laptop while I walk has helped greatly. Podcasts and audio books are great, too. Now, about that strength training.... :O

Try @Growwithjo here on KZbin. I have been doing her workouts consistently for the past two months. She has a variety of workouts, so whenever I get bored there's a new one available. They vary in length,but my favourite are the short dance workouts. They are fun, but short and sweet so I can convince myself to complete them as it's "just 10 minutes", plus it really is fun!The key is making small changes and doing them consistently and changing it up to avoid boredom

First of all you look fabulous! I noticed right on this video. I’m 62 and have been working out since I was a toddler. I love it. I teach it now. My dad is 91 and still works out 6 days a week and also gets his 10,000 steps a day! A tip from a 91 year old workout with weights muscle is very important as you age!! If you fall you will be able to get back up😊

@@ThatAwkwardMom @ginnyniemiec8341 Read Dr. Peter Attia's book on longevity called Outlive. It's a real eye-opener. He also has a youtube channel and a website. He stresses stability training, too, to avoid those damaging falls as we get older.

i struggled with consistency until about a year ago, i found two things that worked - I had to tell myself that exercise was non-optional. sort of like going to work, you may not want to do it but you make yourself do it. It may seem that the immediate consequences to not going to work are harsher, and I guess they are but the consequences of not exercising are also dire, as you mentioned. You've got to really internalize that, it's not optional, you have to do it. It's your job. Secondly, I started off easy and worked my way up to more substantial workouts. If you are able to walk, there is no excuse to not exercise. Just take a walk. I started by simply taking a 15 minute walk every day. If weather/environment is a problem just walk laps around your home. If you are bored, just listen to a podcast/audiobook/watch youtube/read a book while you walk (just be aware of your surroundings lol) It might feel silly but its easy and there's no reason not to do it. And it's not a fluke, there are tons of well documented benefits of walking as exercise. Then for me, the 15 minutes turned into 30, 30 turned into an hour. Similar to you, i could not stick to going to a gym so I started adding basic calisthenics to the mix. 10 Bodyweight squats, 10 pushups, i couldnt do pull ups yet so I bought gymnastics rings and hung them from a bar (can use a tree branch or a thick broom across two tables, or anything horizontal and sturdy) and did assisted pullups. The rings are actually fun to use so that motivated me a lil bit. 10 reps turned into 3 sets of 10 reps, and so on and so on. Now I walk at least an hour and do a full work out 5 days a week. Eventually, it just becomes a routine and you dont consider not doing it, it's like brushing your teeth in the morning, it doesn't really occur to you to not do it, you just kinda do it. I noticed my motivation and energy level coincide with where I am at in my menstrual cycle. I usually have very low motivation and energy towards the end of my cycle before I get my period; I don’t force myself to exercise then. Around 3rd day of my period I can feel my energy is going back up and I feel motivated to exercise again, so I just pick up where I left off. I made peace with that and not berate myself for not being consistent everyday. It helped me to keep track of my energy level during my whole cycle because it made me see a pattern; now I know that when my motivation is really low and not wanting to exercise, it doesn’t mean that I’ve failed in consistency and will feel like that permanently because I have proven over and over again that my energy and motivation do come back.

I found the same fluctuation. On the low days I stop all exercises and feel like cocooning for a few days, mostly I go for walks, but after I pass that I do not even have to force or motivate myself, I practically feel unable stop, and I go biking, walking, work out every day or just move all day. It is strange, because it feels like we should hold a steady level for the body to be healthy, but for me that is not working and I came to accept it after struggling with myself for quite a long time.

Fast Like a Girl describes this! Dr. Mindy gives tips on how and when to vary your exercise. It’s probably the single health book that I refer back to again and again (other than for a vegetable broth recipe in Ultrametabolism).

@@username00009”Dr” Mindy is an absolute scam artist. She’s a chiropractor. Having a lack of energy just before your period is not some revolutionary concept that “Dr” Mindy came up with. There are plenty of books from actual doctors which discuss the menstrual cycle much, much better.

YES! This is called continuity over consistency. We CAN’T be consistent. We will always get ill, go on holidays etc etc. so the trick in continuing even when you can’t be consist rather than giving up because you’ve “lost your streak”.

YES! It is so infuriating that we are so dependent on constant hormonal changes. I try to understand which days I will have a boost in motivation and use it, and don’t beat myself up when I can’t do anything on some days, I just do 1 minute if I don’t want to break the streak

I am not consistent in much, but for some reason I am in exercise. I’m 71 and have done regular exercise 5 days a week for most of my life. What a difference between my energy, endurance, health, and a lack of aches and pains that my friends who don’t exercise all seem to complain about. It needs to be a lifelong habit. I don’t want to be a burden to my kids and want to feel like doing things for many years to come. Keep at it!

Yes, take care of yourself now. I am 62 and had a heart attack in January. Thank God I went to the ER. I am finishing up my cardiac rehab and getting on track with exercise, weight loss, and lifestyle changes. You got this!

As someone with audhd, I also need a body double. I would prefer to go to fitness classes despite my social anxiety. I don't have the time, energy, and money to go out tho lol. I try to schedule time for youtube workout videos instead.

Way to go! I do not see you as a quitter at all! You keep restarting! I see you as someone who wants variety! So, even with this new system, maybe do tapes for 2 months, then walk for 2 months, then swim, etc. etc., or something of the like. You're doing great!

At 66 years old, pain is my greatest motivator. Using weight machines to exercise joints and shoulder stiffness keeps me pain free. On comfortable days, light cardio helps keep weight from creeping up. Thanks for your insight and inspiration.

I didn’t start working out consistently until my daughter was 12 lol. I was 53 at the time, it’s never too late. What helped me was my fitness forum check ins, it was an online community I wanted to be a part of. Also, the online community created by my favorite fitness instructor was important. But what really kept me consistent was the mental health benefits. Exercise reduces my anxiety and depression. Now that I’m 64, there’s more motivation for health reasons. Enjoyed the video!

Can you share what that was? My husband got me the Conqueror's Challenge for a gift, which has helped me a lot. Because between being all messed up by COVID and having messed up hormones, I have exercised with zero visible benefits. I did stay somewhat strong, so there's that. But now I'm finally starting to see results (these last few years have been soooo frustrating!) I suppose another layer at this point would be helpful 😎

@@gohawks3571 The fitness forum is called Video Fitness. I can’t link on KZbin. Because it’s a forum, the members are mostly over 50, as forums aren’t as popular anymore. The instructor is Jessica Smith. She has a KZbin channel, but most of her content is on her streaming service. It sounds like you’ve had great benefits, being stronger is a real benefit. When it comes to weight loss, the diet is the most important. Since our metabolisms slow down with age, it becomes more difficult to, we can’t eat as much.

Great that you found something that works for you! :) For me, the key is finding something I enjoy - preferably something I find it difficult to stay away from. For me, that could be yoga, dance or walking. If I don't enjoy the activity, I just can't stick with it - no matter how much I punish myself, or try to 'discipline' myself. I just end up beating myself into the ground. Last november, I started a one year challenge. I made an excel spreadsheet (I am a nerd, yes), where I record my weight, my steps and the number of exercise minutes I do - every single day (I don't weigh myself every day, but I have the option to). For every 10 minutes of exercise, and every 1.000 steps, I award myself 1 kr (in dollars, that is about 0,15). When the year is up, I have to spend it on something meaningful to me (I have not decided what yet). I have an Apple Watch, so every step I take should be recorded. Every Saturday, I take my measurements and weight - just for recording/tracking purposes. This way, I create motivation for myself. I don't loose anything if I have a day with no energy, but the more I do, the more I get rewarded, and I get to see the progress over time. I can see I have increased my daily average step count over the time (though I can see the weekends is where I tend to struggle, on days I have no plans). I am more likely to do a small exercise routine at home, because even 2 minutes will add up in the long run. I found out that I am more motivated to go for a walk if I have an errand, so I try to create errands for myself on days I am technically doing nothing. So far, I have "earned" 1.128 kr (164 usd) There are so many different ways people get motivation, but it is just awesome when you find the key for you. :)

Relying on others hasn’t worked for me in the long run. What has is Atomic Habits and Habit tracking. One of the things I track is my treadmill walks with a calendar I keep on the treadmill. Habit tracking holds me more accountable than any person ever has.

My motiviation is: working out is not for to be fitt or lose weight, it is to keep my brain sane and working well, coz I do not want to face cognitive dissabilities in my golden years :)

I rock the BeatSaber for 20 mins because with my disability my workouts need to be no impact. I was doing great until my husband got forced onto midnights. I got back on it when he changed jobs and was on days, but then he was back on midnights for almost a year. 2wk ago, he made it to days, and I'm so happy to get back at it. My joints hurt less, and I can squat better! So thankful I can be back at it again.

I'm glad your exercise has helped you! I found out I needed more. Exercise only strengthens muscle. DIET was the big weight effect. I dropped bread to once a day and lost 40 lbs. Now I'm Carnivore and I lost acid reflux, eczema, joint pain, migraines, depression, anxiety, acne, and I look amazing.

"Find what works for you and embrace it" Great advice. For me, it was finding a form of exercise that I enjoy and look forward to - so getting to do the exercise is a reward in itself. I'm very fortunate to have found some exercise classes, with great teachers, great students and great music. And it becomes even more motivating as I see myself getting fitter and stronger!

This is a good point!! Im a a retired competitive boxer. LOVE BOXING and WEIGHTLIFTING. Sometimes, i dont feel like doing those forms of exercise. Sometimes shaking up the routine is enough to get me motivated. Other times its trying a whole different mode of exercise that makes motivated. Like, Pilates, tried it a few times, i love it! The prospect of doing something new gives me the motivation to actually do some exercise. 12:02

Great system! I workout usually 6 days a week. I found out I'm pre diabetic and working out helps lower my blood sugar. ❤❤❤ it's a great motivator cause I don't want to have to be on meds later.

For me, I need to find things that work with my established routines. And when my life changes, I need to find new routines and it's hard. All through lockdown, I did 30 minutes of intermediate yoga every afternoon, and it was great. (I did a 1000-day challenge and only missed 2 days.) Then I went back to working at the office and was no longer able to do 30 minutes of yoga in the middle of my workday. Instead I've started doing 10 minutes of yoga in the morning before I make breakfast. It's not ideal -- I'd love to do more -- but I haven't figured out how to fit anything else into my routines yet. At least I'm consistent so far, and 10 minutes a day is still better than nothing.

A baby is motivated by exploring. Same works for adults. Exploring a gym only goes so far. Going places, meeting people, trying new things out is how adults explore. You get exercise in the process.

The invention of the ebike was a game changer for me. Turns out i like riding and being out in the fresh air but where i live is very hilly and i wasnt fit enough for a regular bike. Now i enjoy biking to work and can put the assistance up when i need help making it up a hill.

The only thing that got me exercising consistently was actually paying a fitness coach - knowing I was meeting her for weekly assessments on the scales and tape measure ensured I didn’t skip my gym sessions 3-4 times per week to check off routines on my app, and meet my nutrition goals. Plus the physical changes and how better I felt was double-motivation. So when we ended after 12 months when I thought I could go it alone so I could save some money - I dropped right off the wagon and find myself inconsistent again. Because, myself as a motivation driver, gives myself too many allowances to let fatigue and laziness and excuses win.

I found habit stacking worked for me. I'm in my mid forties and have never stuck to a regular exercise routine until 1.5 years ago when my kids started karate classes. I go to the gym in the same building during their karate sessions - so only going to the gym twice a week but twice is better than none. I'm not motivated to go to the gym but I am motivated to support my kids to go to karate. My kids must now never quit karate though!

I now walk at a rather fast pace almost everyday for an hour (I begun at a much slower pace, and only for 30 minutes). At first, what kept me motivated was the long-term consequences if I kept on being so sedentary. Now it's still consequences but on the short-term : if I don't walk 2 days in a row, I get cramps in my legs 😀 And what's best is that those walks have become my favorite part of the day !

I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! After your video went up I asked my sister to try your system (both moms of two). I have not worked out this consistently since before getting kids and I feel so good! Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would be able to motivate myself in the evenings. I don't think that this is the channel to say it, but I wanna try saying it, maybe it'll help. What I did to start working out every day is not hating my body. I concentrate on how the working out makes me feel and not on loosing weight. If you hate your body and say "i need to change this to love it" you wouldn't take care of something you hate, no? You need to concentrate on the positive effects of working out, and even if you move for 5 minutes it still counts! Its better to commit to even just five miutes that doing nothing. Another thing that I do is preferring low impact workouts and doing them in nature. Just because looking at nature has a positive destressing effect, that if you are focusing on how a workouts makes you feel is really important. And I do low impact because if I feel exausted after the exercise, how can I do it every day? I need to do other things in my day! I started walking 1 km every day and now at 2 months i walk 2 km. (For my health i need to increment slowly) Ah and did you know that you need just 7500 steps a day to live a longer life? Its not 10000 anymore! It has the same cardiovascular benefit of 10000(But if you reach 10000 Its just added exercise!:))

Same. Try a different idea. I find "friends" are situational in the modern times. People don't have time to be friends in multiple settings. I guess even in the olden days, friends were neighbours- friends because they lived near you. That's still "situational". I have "work" friends, "dog park" friends, and some times "online" friends. Maybe try ideas you'd normally never try- too shy, too introverted, to time poor.

Just made a verbal contract with my husband that if I haven't completed some form of workout for the week for 4 days, I owe him $50 at the end of the week. $2 is just too low and won't hurt enough. The longest commitment I've had w an exercise program was a class at the YMCA 1st thing in the morning. The class was a fun and low impact class. Dancercise was the name. The people there was mostly seniors, but they were so fun and encouraging to be around. They always asked where I was if I didn't show the next time I was there. The combination that made this successful was low impact/fun/influence of the other people. This worked until I started having problems w my knee and couldn't do it without pain. I stumbled across this video today, and I just wanted to say I'm glad you found something that worked for you. You look amazing! (I've seen other videos by you - also discovered by accident - but they were mainly the cleaning videos). So, because I've seen previous videos, and then this one today, I can see the amazing difference in your physique and skin. However, I'm not sure it was just having to pay for not exercising that forced you to be consistent as a $2.00 fine is a heck of a lot less than the literal hundreds of dollars you wasted on gym memberships. I'm calling BS. 😅 I would venture it's the combination of your friend, the spreadsheet (which is a visual), and allowing yourself the 'sick' days that was more the contributing factor. You got yourself an enthusiastic partner (to bolster your enthusiasm), and allowed yourself to miss days with legit reasons. Giving yourself permission to be something other than just 'someone who has to work out everyday' takes a great deal of pressure off. And now, after four months, it's become habit. 😁 Congratulations! You look amazing!

VERY encouraging video, thank you!! (love your editing style, too btw!) Would love to hear more about your fitness journey and progress if you're willing. 43 and have been actively trying and struggling to lose weight for the last 3.5 years since having my son. It's noticeably different trying to lose now than even just mid 30s. Nobody prepared me for how fat distributes differently on my body at 40+, also lol. It's a mind-eff my self esteem has to battle with! Your advice is awesome and genuinely gave me some hope again. I actually just worked out and got out a spare jar to put on my desk for my own consequence plan and then sat down to type this up which is rare for me on KZbin lol. One positive tip I'd like to add that might help some other folks - try also focusing on non-weight goals over purely weight numbers if possible. Instead of purely focused on seeing a number go down on a scale and getting discouraged and feeling low about myself - but lifting yourself up by seeing these other numbers are still positively changing to prove you are making healthy progress! Some ideas like how many laps in a pool, lifted the next heavier weight, or being able to zip up a pair of waiting paints (even if you can't button yet - CELEBRATE PROGRESS!!) Googling "non weight fitness goals" gives more suggestions that each person can pick and choose for themselves since we're all motivated a bit differently. Good luck on your journeys everyone!!

That is great that this works for you, Ariel! After I realized that discipline is the highest form of self-love, I started to workout almost everyday. My body and mind were really resisting the first 2 weeks and I had to push myself but after the 2 weeks I started to look forward to the gym :) I am no longer just donating money to the gym, I am actually using it🎉🎉🎉

My big motivator is a desire to avoid another herniated disc. I had surgery for one back in 2012 when I was in my 20s. I work really hard to keep my weight down and stay physically strong so my muscles can support me the way it needs. It also helps that I do things I enjoy, like running. I also recommend signing up for events that require you to prepare with exercise like a race. Nothing motivates you more than a deadline.

What is working for me now is that I started playing Disc Golf and my wife also started playing... and my daughter. Now we plan ahead for the next time we get to go play disc golf! Making exercise fun and social was a big lift for me!

I recommend a Sunday Superset!💪🧹 It's my twist on your Tuesday Tidy Tango - "Superset" exercises with housework!! 🤓💪🧹 It's like circuit training meets the Tidy Tango! But instead of just cleaning tasks - alternate between a exercise (e.g. bicep curls) and a housework task (e.g. folding laundry). Just need some energetic music and a timer. And keep rotating round through different exercises and cleaning tasks. It's fun, the time flies, and at the end I have a clean and tidy house, and I've exercised my body!! 🤓💪🧹💃✨

I'm 34 and I've been struggling to make exercise a part of my life, especially with the "all or nothing" mentality where if I missed a day or two I'd just end up quitting. I did some research and learned that by changing a small habit first it can lead you to add better habits into your life with less difficulty, and that missing a day or two is fine as long you get back into it. In my case I would eat cereal for breakfast, that's a terrible breakfast so I started to make an effort into making a breakfast, like eggs on rye bread with avocado & feta with a side of yogurt and other such things. In the beginning I set a goal of making breakfast at least 4 times a week, and settled for cereal the other 3 times and it worked quite well, after doing that for a couple of weeks I tried increasing the times I'd make breakfast to 5 and so on. Now even though I wake up and feel tired or lazy to make breakfast when I go to the kitchen and see the cereal it reminds me that I don't feel as good from my stomach and my energy levels are different from when I make breakfast so I end up cooking regardless of how I felt earlier. That's slowly starting to pour into exercise, I had a couple of months where I did quite well but some things came up and I prioritized my time onto that instead of exercise. I heard someone say that it's better to try to get your exercise done first thing when you get up, because as the day goes on and you spend your focus and energy doing other things you may feel less motivated to get your workout done later in the day, this is true for me especially since I struggle with anxiety and depression so my energy levels are probably lower than the average person by the evening, so far doing it early seems to be working. I wrote a wall of text here but I hope that anyone also struggling with being consistent can find some value out of it as I have. Good luck out there, you can do it!

Last year September, I saw your video about exercising to have a cleaner home. I got motivated and I started exercising daily. After over two months of commitment, I registered for a group workout session in my Masjid. Today I’m proud to say I’m lifting 15 lbs in each hand and enjoy all sorts of squats.

I work out every Friday morning. Usually it's the gym and then a swim with friends, but when I can't go, I force myself to do something else, like a long walk etc. Under no circumstances do I let myself skip it, unless I'm really too sick to do anything. I've been doing it for 6 months and it's working. I think the fact that I'm not making it impossibly hard for myself is helping me stay on track. Every day just wouldn't work, since I have 2 jobs and kids. But half a day a week is doable, so I keep going.

Making exercise more accessible to me has helped. Having a mat ready on the floor and learning some exercises by heart makes it easy to start. I also know some standing exercises I can do without a mat. Homevideos are more accessible than the gym, but the gym is right for some people - less distractions, more tools. I enjoy yoga and walking, so I do those the most. Most people can't keep a streak forever, so if you break a streak, just start again, missing one day is better than missing ten. Consequence does work for me to some degree, but it is not accountability but stiffness and pain that pushes me to stretch at the very least.

I’m 29 too and have struggled to be consistent with working out in the past. This system seems great to me because it’s accountability that doesn’t take constant connection with who ever you are doing it with. It just takes honesty which I have never struggled with (seriously, I couldn’t stay out past curfew in high school cuz I got too uncomfy at myself). I’m so excited to try this out and pray to GOD I stick with it cuz I’m tired of being inconsistent in life!!!!

My husband got me the Conqueror's Challenge for Christmas a few years ago, and it's very motivating! You get beautiful medals for each challenge. I've been going so long on the one I'm on because 1) I keep getting sick, and 2) I do long walks when I am ok, so I chose to do the long version. It's the LOTR Challenge that I'm doing, and I'm close to my fourth medal👍 You can do a ton of different exercises. Most challenges are a normal length, like 30-40 miles, but the LOTR one is thousands of miles. So there are a great variety of choices. And the medals are gorgeous!

But how come all my parents and grandparents never went to a gym, had no exercise clothes or gear, never heard of jogging, never lifted weights, barely drank water etc - lived normal life spans? We cannot control everything about our health. Sometimes I believe that this anxiety and stress about ageing, inculcated in us by media of all types, is killing people. I think that generation didn't spend nearly as much time sitting and watching screens as we do. They did activities, and spent time outside more. If they wanted to see the newest movie they'd have to get out of the house and go to cinema. Life inside was pretty boring, so they gravitated to spending their free time elsewhere, museums, friends, cafés, libraries, nature etc.

@@jadehei538 Yes, my grandmother in the UK was always on the go, shopping, meeting her sister, going to the cinema and she walked everywhere and used public transport. Also, she had no modern equipment for housework - everything was heavy to lift. She was quite fit and lived until 94 - a cigarette each evening with a small tot of whiskey. Everything in moderation.

Going to be 59 this month. Menopause was the exercise killer for me. Now post-menopause, I feel like I want to move again. Going to focus on practical things like flexibility, toning and being able to get up from the floor. I do not want to lose mobility or hurt. That's my motivation now. Wow, excellent video! You are a wonderful story teller! That is a good secret! I am 57 and have had the best luck when I have an exercise buddy! I have had a few of them over the years and each one exercised with me for at least a couple of years before moving away or having a different job that wrecked our training schedule of either going to the gym together, or being walking buddies or water aerobic buddies. My husband retired on July 1st and he is now my consistent workout buddy and I am so excited we now have the time to more easily do this together! This is the first video of yours I have seen and I look forward to watching more! 😃

I found the best way to keep up with my exercise, was to just move, by doing the things I love. So I took up adult dance class. It’s great and I love it. I’m motivated to go every week. I love to skate, so I go to a rink twice a week and skate around for hours. I learn new skating skills. I’m using up calories and I wouldn’t even notice. I love walking, so I try and walk as much as I can. I have found The best way, is definitely to do the things you love to do.

For the record, this video just happened to pop up in my recommendations, and based on the title it was exactly what I needed as I get ready to put myself back on an exercise regimen to finally lose all this weight. However, I became very frustrated very quickly that you would not just get to the damned point. My sole interest here was hearing your *ACTUAL* advice on staying motivated to exercise without dropping out for weeks or months at a time between inspired bursts. Not to waste my time getting irritated trying to find the relevant part of the video I needed. I'd recommend that at the very least you offer viewers a timestamp bookmark.

I don't have children, but my "secret" to being consistent is by keeping to a highly consistent schedule with various phone reminders. If the phone says it's exercise time, it's exercise time, PERIOD; I usually do brisk walks, but if the weather is bad I can do yoga or stretches inside instead. Its different for everyone. I'm 44 and have learned I'm never going to commit to"working out." But give me a project, for the garden for instance and I'll get all my steps in and probably strength training too. It keeps me from thinking of it as a workout and I have instant results (the project gets done). So now I'm giving myself projects around the house and I can stick to a "workout."

Getting my hormones checked and figuring out I had zero testosterone and then getting on TRT at 41 is what helped me become consistent at working out. And I'm a nutritionist and have a personal trainer husband, yet working out wasn't something I could ever stick to! Ladies, get your hormones checked! Testosterone specifically! Best of luck!

Im 56. F. Started moving at age 3 in gymnastics and swimming. My entire life was fitness - even in the slower years of deaths in the family, etc. I knew to move. It's just a part of me. Im inly 8 lbs more than high school weight. I can cut that diiwn easily. And I can definitely gain weight if I don't move amd eat healthy ( meaning my body type will lose or hain fat and muscle). I work out at the park under the trees by the water. Less distractions beautiful nature environment. I take care to enjoy food by finding out what I really like that's healthy. I don't feel jipped. The discipline started young. And I'm accountable to God, who gave me my body. I think accountability partners are great! 3-4 x a week at 42 minutes really focused with a few breaks of only 3 minutes, that's all you need. 42 minutes HIIT training. It's been an incredible companion over the years- this life if exercise has been a deep abiding friend. I take no medications, no pian ir stiffness in my joints. Start your children young, teach them to respect their vessel. God bless you for your honesty. You're seeking a solution! Respect.

I enjoyed this video content immensely; I loved hearing about your journey of failure after failure, bringing new awareness each step on your journey, until you finally created a workable solution. I love it that you have a sense of humour, too. Now, before the trolls start coming at me for what I am about to comment, I want to say up front that I work with survivors of both domestic violence (DV) and $exu@l violence (SA). I have learned in my work that many more men are abused by their wives than we know. They often do not report it due to the embarrassment of being seen as a "weak" man. I know if someone is not acquainted with domestic violence, they might see the initial scenes of you smacking your husband in jest as simply a joke, and I totally get that. That was, of course, your intent. However, as someone working with DV and SA survivors, I just couldn't get past these scenes. As I tried to focus on the rest of your video, those scenes kept replaying themselves in my mind. I asked myself, 'Would it be funny to watch a woman perpetrating SA on a man? The whole #METOO movement showed us how unfunny this topic is. I have to add that domestic violence is just as unfunny to DV survivors, and not a joking matter. Many people have no awareness of the domestic violence towards men that occurs because it is unreported, or underreported. This is why I am bringing it up, here, to raise awareness in those who have no experience with it, and thus could be less sensitive to the topic than the victims. Also, I think it is important to consider how our videos here could be received, and if they could cause harm to anyone, so I wish to speak up on behalf of the victims of violence. Many victims do not have a voice or a choice in these matters. Many women, for many past generations and too many still today, have been deprived of a voice or a choice. Now that we have a voice as women, how do we want to be using our voices? To make a joke of violence, or to educate and work against it? I have to add a question as food for thought: "How would this "joke" be received if the gender roles were reversed, and the beginning of a video had a man smacking his wife's face? I think that smacking anyone, even in jest, is just not funny, and it can trigger in victims unwelcome memories of the things suffered. I do think this video is very watch -worthy, if only you would delete those scenes, or at least put a trigger-warning(TW!) and disclaimer up front, such as: "No husbands were actally harmed in the making of this video," or some such comment. I am going to watch this one again, skipping the beginning, so that I can focus on what sounds like a great solution that can be very useful to so many of us. Thank you for your content.

I used to struggle with anorexia, which required many hospitalizations. Interestingly, I was super motivated to exercise in those years, but in a very unhealthy way. Now that I am much healthier after weight restoration, I find I no longer have much motivation to exercise! So I totally can relate now. I do want to get into an exercise regime that is balanced and I love your ideas! I have just asked a friend of mine to see if she will be my accountability partner and try this consequence idea out! This really touched my heart, Ariel. What you said at 7:00 made me tear up cos that's me 100%. My baby is now a teenager, and I weigh more now than the night I delivered. All the mean comments from others about my weight never seem to even be motivation enough for me. After all, nothing has ever worked permanently. My dr even suggested gastric bypass, but I won't. This feels like such a bad testimony of my faith, too. Surely, this is not honouring God. But even tho I fall, I will get up and try again and again. You look so beautiful BTW. Great job you!!😊

@Bluemoun, aww, you can do this!!! ❤ With diet, just don’t eat anything your great grandparents didn’t have available to eat, because soooo much of our food today wasn’t ever meant to be food. Seed and vegetable oils are the two biggest contributors to weight gain and disease-those oils weren’t available or consumed 150 years ago, but now they’re in everything! Stick to God’s foods for us-butter, lard and genuine, cold, 1st pressed olive oil (make sure it’s not cut with canola or another bad oil). I’m currently losing weight eating potatoes! 😂 I eat them with either eggs or ground beef to get my protein, and I use coconut cream (thermogenic and raises metabolism) & mustard for a dressing and sprinkle onions on top. Yum!! I also eat fat free yogurt and lots of fruit. And ice cream! The ice cream is made with whole milk, coconut cream and sweetened with honey. I enjoy my food sooo much, and it’s all real food that my body was meant to eat. Cronometer makes it really easy to track your food and can really help when trying to figure out what’s working. Please eat a minimum of at least 1500 calories a day to ensure you get adequate nutrition. I’m petite, and I eat closer to 1800-2500 calories a day. I can current only do up to 2500 if about 500 of those calories are from coconut cream, since that’s thermogenic. I’m following the Bioenergetic space and up trying to up my metabolism so I can eat even more calories for health reasons. Years ago, I was under eating at probably only 1300 calories a day, and I had no idea! Thought I was eating plenty! Anyway, I didn’t mean to write so much! 😂 God bless you richly on your journey!!! 🙏🏻❤️

I’m working on trying to eat healthier overall and workout more consistently. I enjoy walking, dancing, hula hooping, shooting basketball hoops, kicking a ball around. Last summer I did a couch to 5K program and ran a race on Thanksgiving. After taking some months off, I started the jogging back up a few weeks ago. One of my doctors has been helping with my current health journey. I also told my elementary/junior high school gym teacher about the couch to 5K and my health journey. I never really did well in gym class in school (various reasons) and had a bit of anxiety letting her know but it’s been helpful. I have a friend I sometimes walk with too. I do love listening to music when I workout to help motivate me as well.

I agree with this, consequences are more motivating than rewards. Another one I find works for me is I tell myself to pick exercise that I think is fun (like running vs workout routines) and push myself/refuse to quit for 3 months through the unfun part of establishing the habit + my body getting back in shape (I love running, but it tends to take 2-3 months to stop getting shin splints and side stitches). And for the perfectionist side of me, I tell myself a subpar workout is way better than skipping. And even if I fall into an on and of cycle of exercise, I'm not a failure. That's still a ton of exercise I got in, even if it wasn't perfect- and in terms of character statements, I choose to say "I am someone who values exercise". People aren't motivated by guilt statements like "I'm not a reliable person/I'm a quitter".

I had been exercising (age 64) almost daily and then sprained my ankle, got through that and before I could really get back to exercising and diet, I tore my meniscus.😢 You are doing a wonderful thing, doing it now!! I love your videos 😊 Great advice. Start this when your younger if you can ❤

My secret is doing something that is really fun and that I like. The only sports I have ever really enjoyed are dancing and riding. Any other workout has never worked for me in the long run. If it is fun, it is so much easier to stick to it, because I actually look forward to it!

Fear of taking medicine got me started exercising. My cholesterol was a little high and scared me enough to stop sitting on my butt. I exercise to KZbin videos in the morning and walk in the evening at a local college campus

So happy you found something that worked for you. Personally this wouldn't help me, I would pay money not to work out if I didn't feel like it. What worked for me was changing my daily habits to include walking and other incidental movement everyday as I really want my wine and pizza on the weekend and want to keep fitting into my favourite pair of denim shorts. I also have this old dress from my 21st I try it on every birthday and if it doesn't fit, I have to get stricter with myself. Learning to think of yourself as a priority is the key. It is all about mindset.

0:40 I waited all day to watch this video and I had to stop at this point in order to stop laughing and choking . Aaah! I don't know about "routines" but I found that I more consistently moved, on a regular basis, when I played my favorite music in order to complete some OTHER task. I'd find myself dancing in the kitchen while trying pick up trash, or death metal stomping around while pulling ingredients out of the fridge and cupboards. I had an entire album I found I couldn't stop moving to, so I use that when I pulled out my rebounder because I felt compelled by the music, not by the amount of time the clock said I had to keep going. For me, it's less a lack of "ambition" and more of Life-get-in-the-way-of-everything, and no day is the same no matter how hard I try to keep "routines". Something else I found that helped , and this works cuz I live alone, is that i have an old Xbox and it has a camera attachment that can see into the room. I found a game where how you move in the room interacts with the game elements on screen. It's called Kinect Party. I'd leave the game running on the Room-Full-of-Balloons game, and whenever I walked through that room during chores, balloons would fly around on the screen and pop. I'd find my self walking through the living room and spontaneously flailing about for 5 minutes making balloons fly about! ( This worked at Game Night as well as unsuspecting friends walked by the camera and showed up on the TV) I could never get an exercise buddy because they were either MORE on routine than I could be or I was MORE motivated than they were when I needed it. 11pm Dance Party Whooo, Let's Go!!!! YEah, I tried the Pay to exercise thing and everyone rejeected it. No one wants to be reminded of how they are failing AND have to pay out for it. Besides that having limited finances, and a hectic life, there was no way I was giving money to someone else for them to exercise. Also this doesnt' work for people like me. I don't know what's wrong with me, but negative consequences down the line are not as motivating as consequence/reward now. Dancing is it's own reward and it's also the exercise. Using the weights , I think about what real world action I would be performing, Role-Playing. I'd do spontaneous push ups to look beneath the sofa, Planking because, if something rolled beneath the car, don't want to get clothes dirty scrambling on the ground. My best way to exercise was to make it part of my daily stuff so it wasn't a chore. I lost a lot of doing exercises when I got sick with migraines and other health problem, but I feel the urge to move about still and want to make that part of my lifestyle again. It's harder to quit when it's just something you DO. instead of somethign you Havta-Do. When I notice I haven't done something in a while, it's less a " Oh darn I'm so bad I quit doing the thing" and oh, I haven't done that in a while, that will be fun.

External motivation may be great as a start, but later, I think, it's more important to focus on what you get from your workouts. Every time you finish a workout, take a moment to say thank you to yourself for caring for your body. And assess your physical and mental state: do I feel better now than before the workout? How does my body feel? How do my thoughts flow? I noticed that very often I don't want to exercise, but when I finish, I feel grateful that I did. This keeps me going.
