Sunway Putra Mall or Yaohan (The Mall) when it was open in the 90s was the "IT" place for teenagers to spend their time with friends ie. Melepak. We used to call it the Mall. It used to have an indoor theme park like the one in Berjaya Times Square with rides and all but smaller scale. But when newer mall open, it was kinda forgotten. There's a few more shopping complexes that's the place for "melepak" at the time. Pertama Complex, Campbell Complex and if you want to rollerskate there's Semua House etc.

This was originally known as *The Mall* when it opened in mid 1987. It was the largest mall in Malaysia and also _the_ mall to go to at the time. The anchor tenant was Yaohan, a department store from Japan. This was an exclusive place to shop. There was an arcade cum amusement park on the top (5th) floor of the west wing. They had a pirate ship, a Matterhorn ride and bumper cars. During 1988 Chinese New Year, the year of the dragon, they hung a dragon, several hundred feet long, that circled the iconic main atrium (5-storey high, but gone now after the major renovation in 2013). Shoppers who made purchase of a certain minimum value in the mall were entitled to enter a contest to guess the length of the dragon. I don’t remember what the prize was and the actual length of the dragon. My guess is 88 metres (288ft) to coincide with the year 1988. In the mid 1990s, new malls were built in KL and that pulled the shoppers away from The Mall. 1997 was pretty much the nail in the coffin when Yaohan in Japan went bankrupt (eventually sold to AEON of Japan in 2000) and had to close all their stores in Malaysia. The Mall went into a decline and was acquired by Sunway Group which renovated it in 2013 (and removed the iconic main atrium) and reopened it as Sunway Putra Mall in 2015. It’s not the anymore. 😢
