I think my favorite part about this renovation you two worked on is how cohesive it is! With all the traveling you've been doing and having to communicate a lot of things remotely it looks and feels like the communication and teamwork to do this kept on going well. Nothing seems out of place and all the accents added throughout give the feel of a nice, desirable place to visit. (I would add if this is the first and only house Ushka and you have teamed up to renovate, it's a glowing first example to add to your resumes. Watch out, others out there may be watching and wanting to hire you two!)

That's a great idea. I was also thinking about doing it in free library-style (bring one, take one). People staying there could leave their favourite book and take a new one. Therefore there would always be new books to read if somebody wants to stay there multiple times and the books might also end up being from different countries and maybe even in different languages.

I'd leave the thrifted desk as-is instead of painting it grey. It looks nice how it is currently and making it grey would make me think more of the 'flipper special' where house flippers or landlords just make most everything a grey color.

I do think I like the idea of leaving the stained wood showing. Alternatively, they could seek out a custom cat-themed grey desk mat/desk protector that could be cut to fit the top of the desk and matches the grey color of the chair, place little protective covers over the desk feet that are colored and shaped like cat paws, and maybe update the hardware/drawer pulls with cat toys or something else cat themed?

That little loft space is cosy goals! As a potential guest, I have some suggestions; In the genkan, it would be nice to have a rod with some hangers above the space where you said the suitcases can go, I suppose hooks can work as well, but wet jackets might damage the wallpaper in the long run. Add a semi-full length mirror, it's nice to be able to see yourself before you go out. For the bedrooms, I would add clothing racks with hangers, as it can be a bit annoying to literally live out of one's suitcase. A mirror somewhere in the bedrooms would also be welcome. It would also be nice to have a small sidetable or night stand in the bedrooms near outlets, so you can leave your phones to charge at night, and also have somewhere to put your glasses before going to bed.
@chocjamie

I agree, I always want a bedside table or at least some sort of shelf or pocket for my phone, earphones, and medication. Maybe a coffee table or side tables downstairs for cups to go too? Otherwise you put them on the floor, they get knocked over etc.

If theres not enough space for little tables, you might want to just hang some bags on each side of the bed. As I watched you going cat-gaga over samples in the beginning stages I wondered whether it would be cheesy. But no. It's charming. All of it--even the birds and the way you opened up space throughout. I'd love to see an interview with your contractor/builder and the company's initial reaction to working with foreign women, why they hesitated over some of your requests, as well as how they feel now about the end results. Are there things you have done that they've never done before which they will now recommend to other clients? You've hit it out of the park, Mesdames! Congratulations!

You two have done SUCH an amazing job!! Genuinely. People like you thinking of even the tiniest details that may not be noticed first hand, are the type that need to be designing houses/renos. Looking at many houses/apartments, it's so easy to see no thought or care is put into them. Which is such a shame, because these are spaces that others are expected to make new memories in and experience for a significant amount of time in that point in their lives. Personally, my favorite, was how you both repurposed and evolved the closets-essentially removing them to add much needed space to make the area logically more open/passable, while keeping the overhead as storage(as to avoid just dead space that serves no purpose). Thank you so much for sharing this series, and some of the steps and thought processes you both took in creating this masterpiece. I so hope this gives you two an amazing return on your investments so this can be, dare I say, the first of more renovations if that's what you choose to do. Again, amazing, thank you, and best of luck!

As a frequent traveller I think your rooms need warderobe space, in genkan a place to hang coats, upstairs any place to store clothes would be much more practical than the nook for chilling. When designing space the practical aspect is a must. Good job on the windows, they help a lot, well done! Sliding door to the bathroom just in front of main entrance seems bit off as well. White bedding is better as well for washing. Neutral wallpaper like white one with cat paws was a good idea, the one in the living room is a bit busy, same as the tropical ones upstairs. Not sure about coffee/tea station just in front of bathrokm as well... Great job on the outside, the blue is great the sign as well. Thibk about matching colors a bit more for the future, cause its great that you have matching red microwave and fridge but they dont go well with cat theme or "dainty inn" vibe. Pastels would fit your theme much better in my opinion,would play to the sublte paws on the wall. Mid century couch in one wood shade and then breakfast nook in a different one arent working well. I think an L shaped couch work better with that space and be more comfortable too for visitors to relax after day of seesighting. Good job on the bathroom! Maybe add some space for guests toiletries? Anyways congrats to you both on this project, well done!💪💪

I love how it all came out! The wallpapers are ALL awesome, even the last one! I will say though, in the last room, instead of the two twin beds in there next to one another (which of course if people staying there want to have them like that, that's fine) I think it might be much better suited to having one twin bed up against the far wall, flush against the wall that has the window (short end against the wallpaper as you have it) , taking the desk out of where the closet was and putting the other twin bed in there, and then putting the desk where the second twin bed had been, against the wallpapered wall, but closer to the entrance to the room. That way it would feel a bit less cramped and a bit more cozy, and also much easier for people to get to the balcony and use it comfortably. I know personally, I'm bigger and I'd have a hell of a time trying to squeeze between those bed ends and the wall to get out onto the balcony, so just wanted to give my thoughts on it and some design ideas to better incorporate making that easier for people who may be visiting and be on the larger side. By the way, the little hide away room with glowing ceiling is also my favorite part of the place, though the entire downstairs is just epic! I learned something new with finding out the bathrooms have magnetic walls! GENIUS! We need that all over the world. Things like that are why I love Japan so much, they may be behind with some things like still using a fax but seriously they have so many common things that make so much sense while the rest of us plebs are doing things the hard way lol. Thanks for the tour, I'd love to have the info as to where to get the paw print and "slate" wall papers!

There’s space to push the twin beds apart so people who don’t want to share a bed are able to get their own bed. Separating them as you’ve suggested makes it impossible for the beds to be put back together without rearranging the whole room
@killinglonliness88
@killinglonliness88 Жыл бұрын
@@alexshaw8167 Ah yes, because it’s so hard to move a bed and a desk. 🙄🙄 Honestly most of the time people staying places only need one double bed, and many couples I know prefer separate beds. It would be much more frustrating having to squeeze through the beds to get to the balcony.

i was concerned with the tightness of those beds to the entrance to the balcony as well. especially if you are a larger person or with laundry that would be a pain in the ass to squeeze through and open the door

I knew it was going to turn out amazing but i'm blown away by the final makeover! The attention to detail, craftsmanship and expertly chosen materials really finish it off. The name was a great choice too! I'm praying it's going to be available for my stay next year as it's perfect for what I need. I love the whole house but favourites, if I had to choose, would be the bathroom tiles and walls, the neon sign, and the cubby area with the galaxy wallpaper, definitely something i always wanted as a big kid. You guys should be so proud of yourselves, it's absolutely perfect!!!!

i can't wait to stay here when i get to tokyo someday! also a suggestion - instead of painting the writing desk as grey, you could find a vinyl wrap of dark wood for the chair to match instead. if the desk is vintage in anyway, it would be a shame to paint over the wood.

True but paint can also easily be stripped off from it and the piece can be restored as well. With it being used for an AirBNB it might be best to paint it so any small scuffs and such wouldn't cause as much damage to the original surface.

Well, Sharla, you two did a very good job with the remodel, I liked everything about the house including repurposing old closets to add extra space. I am honestly impressed, the only very slight criticism I might have was with the desk in the upper bedroom, you suggested painting it gray, I think it would look better in its natural wood tone, wood tends to warm up the room. I also like that you kept the "extra cubby space" open and accessible, people will love it . . . I'm sure. It's obvious you both are happy and excited about the house, if I'm in Tokyo I'll be sure to look you up.

CONGRATS for finishing the Neko Neko project, Sharla and Ushka! It was an incredible transformation, really lovely. I love how the vision materialized into the small details, some changes had to be made, but the result is impressive. Now I want to stay there when Japan opens up again. Favorite spots: the bathroom. It's ultimately totally different from before! It's not an upgrade; it's more like a new dimension; the old one was depressing. The "cage" is also great, ideal to stay there and read without interruptions. The builders did a great job. Now, I want a similar rack for my future TV (I don't have one yet), so I'll check out my local Ikea. Have a nice day!

In that "storage"place with the stars wallpaper 2 kids can sleep like bunk beds type with small foldable mattresses.... Little hidden place (like a castle or a tree house), yet close to parents in case they feel scared to sleep alone in a new place. I bet kids will really enjoy it there! My 10year old kid loved seeing it and gave that idea! I guess it's exciting to climb up in a hidden place full of stars!

The house came out so nicely! While I was studying abroad, my host family definitely used the hose to reuse the bath water in the washer all the time. My Japanese apartment came with an old washer and it didn't have a hose, so I never tried! I'm glad you changed out the kitchen cabinet/counters. My Japanese apartment had what looked like the same ones in a different color and they were definitely old and cheap. My favorite part of the house is definitely your little secret/hidey room. You both did a great job redoing the house and its layout. I love the paw prints on the walls and the star ceiling in the hidden nook and the Tv console! The clean lines and the fun modern decor flows throughout the house beautifully. Unfortunately, the writing desk sticks out like a sore thumb. I love how the house looks after the makeover ! But I feel like a lot of storage is missing … For me personally it would be perfect. But I am afraid that lot of people who stay for a few days would like to store there things and suitcases away properly … I think nightstands would be also great for everyone... So for the storage I feel like, it would be cool if the beds were elevated so you could store your suitcase underneath. Than at the entrance some hangers and a shoe wrack.. Than at least one wardrobe and maybe also a coffee table ... Familys with children might also need more storage (maybe even offer a pack n play and a highchair)

Looks so cute, can't wait to see the decorated version! Some translations for the bath tube and toilet buttons would be helpful xD Maybe I have a helpful recommendation: I don't know if you can get it in Japan, but instead of using a mat underneath the chair upstairs, you can get some new wheels. There are wheels that look like the wheels from inline skates made out of a kinda soft rubber material, also in a transparent color. I'm really happy with mine and not to have a mat anymore. Dirt can be easily collected under the edges and when you wipe the floors you have to take care that the area is dry before putting the mat down again...
