I'm very not a fan of flushing the gearbox. Deep flushing is draining the oil after the filter, so some of the more gritty crap will still be inside. (and you keep the old clogged filter) Gearboxes are all exhibiting a little of metal wear, and it's collected on a magnet inside. You have to remove it to clean it, it helps to keep the oil free of abrasives particles. I just do a couple of oil changes if I find the oil to be a little black. If it's really bad I drop the pan, change the pickup (filter) and really clean the pan and magnet. Then I do my oil changes every 30000 km or so. Never had any problem, even with very worn gearboxes. I also found the shifts to be a lot better with dexron VI on dexron III and II gearboxes.
@SamsMotors Жыл бұрын
To anybody reading this - definitely don't be putting Dextron into your 6HP or 8HP gearbox, as it'll destroy it in very short order!!

Both me and my old motor feel great. No scary surprises after pleased to say after 119k and 11 years running on the same oil. Oil out was dirty, yet no major metal only on the plug just small metal contaminates. I drive easy anyway but it just feels and drives so good having this done. What a great guy. Fascinating to learn more about the process. Had mine done yesterday at an official ZF service centre (mobile service not reached our parts), I had a stamp in the book saying oil had been changed 3 years ago, but I was unsure of this as I’d get slight hesitation / jerkiness when under load uphill. Turns out although oil was reasonably clean, they’d previously used the wrong spec oil. After the flush, car is noticeably smoother and quieter. Cost was around £500 which included original pan and filter. I didn’t think this was horrible given it was through a main dealer - they gave me a lift down there and fetched car back when ready etc. interestingly they ran the car up on a rolling road - I guess to run through gears and get oil up to temp before setting the final level?
@SamsMotors11 ай бұрын
Interesting - was it definitely a flush offered by the ZF centre? I was under the impression that ZF only offered normal oil drops. Yes, oil temperature has to be correct to within a couple of degrees to get an accurate level.

I've read some of the questions regarding the filter, personally I would change the filter, this will give a good indication as to the state of the clutches, aswell as the sediment in the oil pan, a clogged filter will restrict the flow of the fresh oil, true you'll never get all the old oil out of a gearbox in a car. A flush, filter change, then refill will reap rewards, unfortunately there's not many garages that truely flush a gearbox, it's just too expensive for the customer. I think the sump and filter are one for a RangeRover, I had to do an oil change on my VW Pheaton a few years ago, this was done as per ZF's instructions, I ended up using around 18ltrs of oil, I bought a 20ltr container of oil, so much cheaper than the 1ltr bottles provided as part of a kit. Hi Sam. Can you remember how much oil drained from cooler hoses when Bodsey connected the machine? Also were they easy to remove and go back on, leak free, easily? I've seen other vids where once removed from an older cars the O-Rings don't seal. I'm about to do a DIY transmission oil change and wonder if it's worth pulling the hoses off cooler to allow more oil to drain which no DIY vid I've seen has tried/bothered to do. Thanks
@SamsMotors15 күн бұрын
I’m pretty sure he put an oil drip tray under the cooler when he disconnected the hoses, but it wasn’t a torrent of oil, more like a trickle. Yeah that’s definitely a possibility to damage the old O-rings during the process - it’s probably wise to have some spares in case of this. If you’re not doing a flush using the cooler hoses then I wouldn’t bother pulling them off, the small amount of extra oil isn’t worth the risk/hassle. You can do a double oil drop if you have the extra oil and want to remove more of the old oil.

@MrBodsy3 жыл бұрын
There’s no harm in changing the filter, just not something I do mobile. Most of the contaminants are suspended in the oil so they will be flushed out with the oil. If you change the filter you’ll only get about 4litres of oil out so as soon as you then start the car, the filter is filled with old oil again so isn’t that much better off than when you first started. Some of my customers get it changed before I flush it but the state of the oil left in the box when they do is still pretty bad so a flush just does it all so much better.

Hi Andrew, cheers for the comment! So over the last ~10k miles since this was filmed, I've gotten around 30-33 mpg on similarly long, motorway trips, which is still better than the ~28 I was getting before the flush. I'm not sure whether the 37.7mpg I achieved in this video was just an anomaly, or because I was driving particularly gently post-flush, but it's not something that I can repeat on every trip. At 50k and 10 years you're pretty much bang on the money for what ZF recommends (slightly under on mileage, slightly over on years). I'd say it would definitely be a worthwhile investment if you're planning to keep the car for a while. Cheers, Sam

Cheers Tristan, the 37.7mpg was the average for the whole drive so it included country A & B roads and motorway cruising and between 50mph (contraflow) and 70mph. Hugely impressed by it! Your list sounds similar to mine - what's the issue with your A/C and how did you diagnose it as the compressor? I've currently got no cold air and want to try and diagnose it this week. Sam
@tristanboler27823 жыл бұрын
Great effort! All depends on the right foot!!! Sometimes AC works other times it doesn't. I had Dartford Trans go over the car while they had it. Said compressor looked very rusty and likely to be an issue!! Popped into local AC specialist (SubZero) I know in Kent, connected up his kit and basically its not engaging at low RPM and pulling pressure down. Thought my road trip my free it up with sone high revs, but nope. Do you know if it has gas in the system ? Compression test might worth a go to see if you have any leaks. Could also be clutch on the fan, was other thing SubZero said. Let me know what you find.... Also got a rattle at 1k rpm I need to find....😊
@SamsMotors3 жыл бұрын
That sounds familiar... Mine seemed to only work when I was cruising for a few miles, and nothing at low speed. So I took it in to be gassed by my local tyre place and they said it already had gas in but the compressor didn't seem to be 'kicking in'. These have a clutchless compressor though, with variable displacement - so it doesn't 'kick in' in the normal sense. So I bought a set of air con gauges and took some readings, and while there is indeed pressure, nothing changes much when the air con is engaged. My fan works fine and comes on when the A/C button is pressed on the dash and the ambient temp is high. I've read that there is a refrigerant control valve in the compressor that fails and can cause these symptoms... but as the compressor has to come out to fit it, and it's a fairly big job, it's looking like I might just replace the compressor!
@tristanboler27823 жыл бұрын
Ah cool, good intel. Yes very similar. Think it sounds like a new compressor is needed.....luckily previous owner did alternator and pulleys... Also considering doing coolant flush and new water pump while I'm at it.

Thanks! They're Cooper Discoverer AT3 Sport 2, in 275/55 R20. Not noisy at all - when I fitted them, they measured 1dB quieter than the original Pirelli's. Really grippy and feels planted.

Hi, in this video you didn't change the Transmission Pan right? In the Manual Instruction it is said that we must replace the Drain Plug also, do you replace it or not? Is this necessary? I've tried to buy the Drain Plug but can't find it anywhere. Please help! My RR (tdv8 4.4 l322) also have some oil leak and I'm trying to replace the oil in the Transmission also. I'm looking forward to your reply!

@@SamsMotors I have always liked this model, but I never had the courage to buy something like this, due to the bad car reputation. I admit, I haven't documented myself thoroughly, but after watching several videos lately, I'm thinking of embarking on an adventure with a 4.4 tdv8. thank you for your effort, and keep up the good work.

@@SamsMotors Now I'm tempted to swap mine for a full size RR 4.4! Mine's great but I would like a smoother more comfortable ride. The sport is good in the bends and smooth on the motorway but the trade off is its a bit crashy around town and at slower speeds. Hmm, off to Autotrader I go.....

No filter change ?
@MrBodsy3 жыл бұрын

Excuse my ignorance here but isn't there a separate filter on these Rangys ? Also it used to be the case you can't change more than about 70% of the oil as it's trapped inside the torque converter ?
@MrBodsy3 жыл бұрын
That’s why the transmission flush works with the engine running and a proper flushing machine. If you just drain the oil you won’t even get half the oil out. These ZF boxes hold 8.5-9.7l of oil (depending on the specific gearbox).
@stuarthall21803 жыл бұрын
@@MrBodsy Thanks for reply. Is there an oil filter inside gearbox ?
@MrBodsy3 жыл бұрын
@@stuarthall2180 there’s a filter built into the sump pan. I don’t change the filter mobile I’m afraid. Most of the contaminants are suspended in the oil so they will be flushed out with the oil. @turbo34922 жыл бұрын
Absolutely there is a filter to change a flushing procedure does not cover. My opinion is that flushing without changing the filter is just half a job.Take your LR to either a specialist or LR dealer and ask for a gearbox service which does include a filter replacement.

I have been told many mnay times dont flush just keep changing the oil apparently flushing can diss lodge a lot of crap in an old box especially if the oil has not been changed on a regular bassis but I am sure these chaps know what they are doing and at the end of the day what do I know "nothing"
