A lot of series hook me early on, but I tend to lose interest after a while, and I won’t even say it’s always the fault of the series. Sometimes I just lose interest. It’s a mark of how much I truly adore a show if I’ve actually finished it.

I mean I get why authors don‘t write fantasy standalones, they just made up a whole different world just for one single book?
@mayakane99783 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing its because authors get to be a bit more lazy with series you'll have a guarantee that at least some people will follow the story all the way through while in standalones they have to introduce new characters and new plots and new places every single time. And its kinda hit or miss with the audience, people that read one book might not read another. There are some series that work really well as a series but usually this is why I think.
@StewyAdamRules Жыл бұрын
@@mayakane9978Another thing to consider is that publishers love when something is a series. They’re much more likely to give a low to mid-tier author a chance in a new IP if it’s at least a trilogy. So many books are made into series it’s almost weirder to them if you only have a standalone. Also, I wouldn’t say it’s a matter of laziness, at least, not for everyone. If you create a cool world with interesting characters, it’s understandable you would want to write more. I wrote a series of three books in a series and ended it on what I think is a high note. The temptation to write more is always there because I enjoy that world. Sometimes writing a series does come from a creative place and not a business one. Just my thoughts on the matter.

The problem is, that you always start a book when it is released, and then you wait until the sequel is out, but by then you have forgotten the whole story and you have to reread the first book. But rereading is not as much fun as reading a new book, and then you have priorities. Honestly, i hate that book series do not yet have summaries at the start, this would make reading series so much eaiser

I don’t necessarily have a problem finishing series, I’m just in the middle of so many. I get excited about new releases so I’ll read the first book and then have to wait for the sequels..and sometimes I’ll just wait until the series is finished before I continue. I make a list every year of about 10 series I want to finish that I only have a book or two left in, and this helps me. I also have a notion page with the series I’m in the middle of and a spreadsheet of things I’ve completed/abandoned.

When a standalone gets a sequel I don’t even register that as a series. I just read Vicious, and don’t feel any immediate need to read Vengeful, mostly because I liked Vicious and I thought it stood really well on its own. (Ironically, I won’t read the sequel because I liked the original so much…) On the other hand I read Carry On in December and didn’t like it. At first I thought, “Oh, there’s a sequel, maybe that will tie up all these loose ends,” but then I realized that it was supposed to be a standalone, so it should have been good on its own. Also, a book in a series shouldn’t need the other ones to be good; every book should stand strong by itself. Honestly, reading is for fun. If it doesn’t bother you, you can start and finish as many series as you like. I read series out of order, sometimes. Go crazy!
@weronikaryfka30883 жыл бұрын
sorry I know this is my second comment but here's the thing with Mistborn: In my opinion the books get increasingly better and the pay off in book 3 is the best one I have ever read (I rated them 3.5, 4.25, and 4.5 successively). That being said, they are not character driven almost at all. There are some great character moments, but they aren't the focus. The magic and the world is. Do you want a fantastic overarching story that will end in the most satisfying ending ever? Read it. Do you want really compelling characters that will carry the plot by making you laugh, cry and everything in between? Well, that requires more investment and if you didn't feel it, then just skip it.

I think you should definitely read the Dragon Republic. Yes, the political intrigue and war strategy are big parts of the story (which becomes super interesting), but I but it is also very character driven. The development of the characters is fascinating to me. Especially Rin, who becomes even more wicked and grows in many different ways as the story progresses and it’s super interesting to read about, since in fantasy we are used to a different type of protagonists. Of course there are morally grey characters in many fantasy novels nowadays, but the dragon republic just hit different. Also, there is a (KIND OF???) slowburn hate-to-love relationship which I love. It is not the main focus of the but I love how the relationship between these two characters develops. Also, be ready to suffer because this book means pain in general but IT HAD BEEN A WHILE SINCE A BOOK MADE ME FEEL SO MUCH so that is also why I love it so much. This was one of my fave books of 2020🥺 and my fave in the trilogy.

You can see with that book if you like Brandon Sanderson’s style without having to commit to anything huge. This is painfully relatable. I have like 15 parts (might be more, who knows) of series on my tbr for this year alone and one complete series. The only series one of a series I already started is a discworld novel, which is way too big to read in one go. Turns out 2/3 classics on my list are part of a series 😂 And it doesn't help that like 80% is fantasy and I'm not in the mood for fantasy rn. Which means I'm now reading a classic and a non-fiction. At least they're both easier to read than I expected. I high key need more cheerful books.

I don't regret reading it but I think the first book is the most solid. But as a series, years later, I don't think they hold up so well. They're fine but... not awesome. Like most of Sanderson's writing. If you don't already love him, don't continue it I would say. Read what you love not what you feel like you have to. Life is too short :) Ps. Please continue murderbot. Or well, I just love it sand think is really good but I understand it isn't for everyone. And yeii for nevermoor! Book 2 is my favourite 💕

Right now I'm debating coming back to the Wheelof Time. I read the first book, didn't love it, and since this series is massive.. there are too many books to read, to commit to a massive series! That being said, I feel perfectly fine if I decide after one book that I don't care about the rest. Oh well.

This sounds like an excellent project for when I want to procrastinate doing work lol I've never counted the series I read like that but I also don't really care? I avoid reading series to begin with xD unless the whole series is out and I can read it all at once (there are exceptions ofc but that's my general rule). Last year I started reading romance and a lot of romance novels do come in loosely connected series that can often be read as standalones, so I just pick the ones that sound interesting/feature tropes I like.

As the time went on and i've got so many new books i realize now i have so many(cries in my cave) unfinished series...I think the last and fastest series i've finished in a long time was the Trials of Apollo and mostly because i went in one after the other book and audio...Still waiting for the Book 3 in the "Villians" soon to be trilogy by V.E. Schwab...
