Vinland saga season 2 really taught me to look within myself. There's no point in being mad at the world. We need to let go of our anger and prejudices.

What a wonderful analysis. It’s such a shame your videos don’t have more views than they do. I especially appreciate the focus on Olmar, as in a lot of ways, I see a lot of myself in him. His development is incredibly underrated, and gives me just as much hope to change for the better as Thorfinn’s arc does.

Thank you for your kind comment. I am happy to see that someone else enjoys Olmar's journey. I think that we all have the power to improve.

something I keep wanting to talk about every time I think about season 2, is just Einar's character, and how effectively he works in so many different ways within the plot. it really all starts with how Einar carries forward the way his mother raised him. I wouldn't call his relationship to Thorfinn parental, but he and Thorfinn are meant to be compared. they're around the same age, but they've had very different experiences, and being raised right is what makes Einar so different, in ways both good and challenging. Einar is used to decency. and that means that when the people around him aren't treating him right, Einar knows it, and can't abide. Einar knows that people can do better. he expects better of himself as well as others. but you can only know that if you're taught, and Thorfinn hasn't been taught. Thorfinn thinks that there is nothing good about being alive, and that nothing good will ever happen to him, but Einar knows better. and by his conduct, Einar can show what was valuable about his mother, by being the son she taught. this is also why Einar doesn't kill Thorfinn in his sleep. it's a direct mirror of Thorfinn holding a sword over Askeladd in the first season. and just like how Thorfinn lowered it because his father wouldn't have done that... Einar stops trying to choke Thorfinn when he cries out, because seeing someone genuinely distressed makes him wish that they weren't. he was a good son, and a good older brother... he still is. but on the flip side... being used to decency and then being thrust into a situation where you're mistreated this heavily for the first time in your life causes a lot of anger and frustration. anger is an emotion commonly felt by good people when they see bad things happen, _especially_ when they know better. and figuring out what to do with that emotion isn't simple or easy. that's where Thorfinn comes in. that's how Thorfinn can help Einar. Thorfinn spent the bulk of the first season steeped in some of the most intense anger and frustration a person can experience... it was his constant companion. and if anyone has the ability to examine it closely, it's someone with this level of familiarity. this is the side of things that Thorfinn can teach to Einar. I've always thought that one of the best things about Thorfinn as a protagonist is his tenacity. when Thors says "you have no enemies" Thorfinn immediately starts poking holes in this statement, even at the age of six. "you're going to war tomorrow, and you're going to kill the enemy, right?" and while we can see that Thors has a lot more that he wants to convey... there's no time. and a lot of what Thors thinks is informed by his experiences, which he doesn't know how to share. the original statement that Thors makes is potentially not very compelling all on it's own. so we need proof. that's what season 1 Thorfinn is. he takes the alternate route to Thors and his way of thinking, and he provides us with the experiences that Thors didn't have the time to put into words. Thorfinn's tenacity keeps him on this wrong path, no matter how many horrors we see, and no matter how bad the consequences feel. he stays on the path longer than most other people could endure, and by doing so, he provides us with a very thorough examination of every pitfall, every mistake, and all the damage that results. and then, when the source of his anger is ripped away, he is left with absolutely nothing. he's never really decided anything for himself before... he's never truly pursued a single thing in this world that made him happy. but the one thing we know about Thorfinn for sure, is that he is tenacious. and if that same sense of stalwart determination can be applied to the goal of peace, we know he could end up doing something amazing. but going back to Einar for a moment... another way that he absolutely crushes it in this season, is via his connection to Arnheid. I think part of why he ends up so dedicated to her, aside from just his basic high standard of decency, is that Arnheid's situation is so similar to what happened to Einar's mother... at least by a basic description. Einar's father went to war and died, same as what Arnheid thought happened to Gardar, and that left Einar's mother as a single parent to her kids. granted, Einar's mother got more time with her children... and when men invaded their village, she died with her daughter. in this story, Einar is the sole survivor, while Arnheid assumes she is the sole survivor of hers... but regardless of any technical differences, Einar can relate and sympathize. their connection is in no way parental... more like, Einar is his mother's son, and his heart would reach out to anyone who has this type of struggle. and in fact, Einar does what Ketil won't do. Ketil also lost a romantic partner to circumstances that were outside of his control. he should be able to relate to Arnheid's grief over the loss of her spouse, but I doubt he ever even heard her story. because Ketil is a self centered coward, and he doesn't consider Arnheid to be his equal. he has no incentive to consider her feelings. when Arnheid dies, Einar has to overcome the urge to seek revenge... and the method is similar. in the same way that he can keep being the man his mother raised, he can also continue to be the man Arnheid was thankful to have known. whatever qualities made her feel that way... whatever qualities his mother valued and passed on to him... he has to keep those alive. it's all that's left of them in the world, and he needs to be strong enough to live and carry those things, because they can't anymore.

Wow another wonderful video! I have been thinking about the "you have no enemies" theme/idea for a long time now. At first It's such a seemingly simple, even trite concept. But in actuality it is a beautifulb and nuanced truth/piece of wisdom. This may sound overly simple-minded, even naive, but I think it can even change the world if enough people truly take it to heart. It certainly changed my outlook on life [I hope] for the better.

That is because Askellad was the one who was driving the plot most of the time. Thorfinn was just tagging along, with the hope that he would one day get to kill the bastard.
