Avri, I am so happy that you have brought this issue of nutrition up in this vlog. Especially for Caribbean people. I eat a whole food plant based diet and when my people hear this they "poo poo it". This is so important - Some West Indians love to hear good things about their bad habits. As A child in the caribbean we use to walk everywhere, growing up. Now whenever I visit, people now take a bus for 3 stops. It breaks my heart. Blessings for highlighting this issue.🙏🙏🙏

Once again, great advice from both of you. As a Jamaican, I stopped cooking the JA cuisine every day long time ago. The yellow, white yams, white rice, curry chicken, jerk chicken, oxtail, ackee & salt fish, etc. Like you both said, eat in moderation. As for seeing doctors, you’re the physician for yourself. Do your research before seeing your doctors. If you’re not comfortable with their answers, don’t be afraid to speak up. It’s your health. Thanks Avri & Simas!❤❤

Condolences to you and your family. When my brother was diagnosed with lung cancer, we took him straight to Sloan Kettering in Manhattan and that made a big difference. On the note of early screening, I just had my colonoscopy and a small polyp was found and removed. That same polyp which was benign but precancerous, would have stayed there and grow overtime into colon cancer. Colon cancer is so preventable. Early detection saves lives. I was watching a news clip on TV where it says 80% of cancers in the US are preventable with early screening, diet and exercise.

@@AvriSimasinvite invite a Caribbean nutritionist on. She can teach how to substitute some of the unhealthy stuff for more healthy foods. I make ackee with salmon instead of salt fish when I cook it. I add mushrooms, bell peppers. The mushrooms juice flavors it. I make pancakes with rolled oats instead of flour or pancake mix. I put blue berries on top and drizzle real maple syrup on. I also eat fruits in season but never drink juices just plain water or real coconut water, not in the box or can. I get real coconut in the Indian stores and chop it open with a meat cleaver. People just have to put in the time and be creative. Health should be every one's priority in life. That's both mental and medical health. We get only one chance.

My prayers and condolences again. You speak truth and wisdom. I believe many men suffer in silence and or don’t get preventative check ups like prostate exams. Men are particularly stubborn. The only test and exam I’m 100% sure my husband got was in his 50’s because I got my bloodwork first and asked the tech to ask the doctor to add it to his orders. He only got physicals because I made his appointments for the same day and time as mine. He now lives in a different state and we are separated in our 60’s and I’m the only person who cares enough to ask him health questions. I’m the total opposite and stay on top of my health, nutrition, activity etc. We only get one body so I pray people will start taking better care💜

I am so glad you are following up. Again Condolences. My Dad recently passed of natural causes (February 2024); however, there are so, so many factors other than just the Clinical and therapeutic aspects beyond visits, annual wellness visits...I consider opening a consultation to help people navigate and advocate for their health . There is an important Administrative and operational aspect. Have questions and ask the healthcare practioners. FYI...New York State has doctrine in promoting wellness; however, it is more. I as a Ph.D.will not "frighten" using GENERALIZATIONs to make your point. We are train to ask questions on ANY research we read or hear about. Salad and vegetables...also be aware that folks need to read ingredient labels not the front the very fine print. I have lots; however, I may need to partner with you to get the word out. Note: All communities Nd regions without proper information and guidance fall into habits that we are used to . As a Jamaican (raised in USA) it is so relatable..We need to be open, speak up AND listen respectfully. Walk good.

Just one addition guys. Colors is most important in our diets, not just green. Fruits and vegetables with darker, richer colors, such as red, orange, yellow, and blue, tend to have more antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent or reduce damage caused by oxidation, a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals. Free radicals can harm cells, tissues and organs. This is why a plant based diet is essential. Bell peppers 🫑 green red orange yellow. Purple 🍆 eggplants, green lettuce 🥬 red tomatoes 🍅 and on and on. Yellow 🍌 bananas, red pomegranates, colorful apples 🍎 🍏. Blueberries 🫐 They all fill us up and keep us healthy. The Jamaican Rastas I believe are the originators of such healthy diets. Plant Based Diets is the key to healthy living.!

Condolences to you and your family. I work for a Prostate , Gynae and breast consultant One of the things I noticed is that men in particular Black men are less likely to 1) come forward for a test and 2) tell family members they have cancer. As a black woman married to a black man, I have encouraged my husband his brothers and the males in my family to get tested. Many men are scared of the DRE (digital rectal examination), but over a certain age, men can get a PSA blood test. But to be honest whichever test has to be done, your health is important. Early detection is crucial for all cancers, if not detected early, your diagnosis could go from curative to palliative. I live in the UK and whilst the NHS gets a bad wrap, overall it does better than other countries. When you get that bowel cancer testing kit through the post please do it, this was how my mother found out she had bowel cancer. Ladies as uncomfortable as they are, have the smear, have the mammograms, men get the PSA test.

Three times a week, I go walking for an hour and half, it's interesting and educational as I learn along the way. Regarding the food etc. and the diabetes, hypertension, cancers etc. yes lifestyle and food is part to blame for the ailments however, all of the mentioned things can be hereditary as well. Eat in moderation, smaller portions add to the food fruits and vegetables. Exercise and walk. Old habits die hard, my dad lived to 100 and was healthy, he ate two called eggs, loaded with salt, Monday to Sunday, and had all the Jamaican foods. A little advice from an mature person, when you are talking about diet, exercise etc. which is good but make sure at the beginning or the ending it's a disclaimer even though you I think have knowledge of medicine. Not bashing you at all just a little advice it's good what you are saying, I am mixed race in fifties I have medical conditions and limitations not all of us can do cycling, and running, etc

Men don’t like to talk about things like that. They also don’t like to go to the Dr to have the exam that needs to be done. I know a lot of black men in Jamaica who make jokes about having the exam and that laughter also translates to fear and denial. Some men don’t want to go to the doctor and hear their ailments because it’s not manly. I am a breast cancer survivor twice and I have friends who feel ashamed to talk about their cancer. I think there is a feeling that you did something wrong to get cancer and that it’s an evil thing. There is a it of cultural sensitivity and those barriers are why we don’t get the treatment that would take care of the problem earlier when treatment is more successful.
