i remember when i first heard this song, i thought sting was covering an old johnny cash song. years later, via youtube, i heard johnny cash's cover. obviously i was not the only one that thought it sounded a lot like a johnny cash song.

I heard this one first by Johnny Cash, and I like his version the best! I always thought it was some old folk song and not a rather modern Sting's song. That's because Cash gave it that sound and style. You really have a great taste in music. :)

Check out "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying" also on the Mercury Falling album or maybe even "Fill Her Up" from the Brand New Day album. And, no offense to Carson and Skylar (they make the song their own in this version) but the Sting version of "I Hung My Head" has a compound 9/8 time that has alternating 5-beat and 4-beat bars. Combined with a syncopated drum beat on the 3rd and 8th beats it has the overall effect implying the clip-clop of horse steps. Definitely check it out. It's mesmerizing. I'd call this version more of a cover of the Johnny Cash version.
