Your theory is correct. I used to work in a bank. Whenever your bank is alerted that there was a security breach from a company or other fraudulent activity and their card numbers pull up in that database, they will automatically send you a new card. They often won't call you over it, but will still send it even if there wasn't any actual fraudulent activity on it--it's mostly a precaution to keep people's information from being used.

Except the credit card number is changed if it’s compromised and that’s why the bank is replacing it. If it’s the same number with a different expiry date, it’s likely Thio’s credit card was within X amount of renewal time (for most banks it’s 6 months). It’s backed up by the fact that he says the old card gets deactivated only when the new card is activated.

Years ago I got an e-mail scam and I figured out who owned the site and called up the tech guy and he got on with the president of the company and after I explained what I have figured out he said he would take care of it. The think is they way he said it made me glad it was not me; like someone might be digging there own grave in a remote location kind of ominous. This was in fact not a scam, rather a data breach of some sort. From the point inn which they obtained his credit card info, they decided to be smart about it and make it into a scam (so he couldn't tell it was even happening); they could literally have just takes as much money from it as possible right away without going through the scam in the first place. When I bought my phone for 550 €, my bank called me for confirmation because I used my card info on the manufacturer's own store website which was abroad from where I live. They actually called and were like "Is it you who made this purchase?". So maybe this is a great way of defense against stolen credit card information. But I guess not all banks do that and not for small amounts of money

That's normal in a lot of countries in the EU, isn't it?. I've got relatives in Europe who need to notify their CC company when they come over here to the USA, both when they'll arrive in the USA and when they will be leaving. They also need to do it when they travel within the EU in certain countries. I wish they would do that for us folks in the USA, at least as an option on your account.

In Hungary, a major data breach happened where a worker stole tons of credit card data from a bank. This thing went in complete silence, it never hit the news. The bank just paid the stolen money back to the customers, because they did not want to get the media's attention. If your bank is replacing your card without any explanation, i guess they know about some sketchy things happened that they don't want to admit.

Once the credit card company saw that your credit card might have been compromised, even though not yet used in a scam, they should have invalidated your card or not allow any purchases to go through without your independent verification. By letting you know a new card was coming but not canceling it they set you up for the scam. Not all people monitor their emails as quickly as you did.

@@ailivac Not really. Victims can be quite intelligent, but they give way due to clouded judgement or lack of knowledge (amount other things). This is why the scam often has some kind of pressure, such as believing they to act immediately or be arrested. Sometimes it is just a mistake or the claims made in the scam just happen to fit with whatever is going on in the victims life at that time. Scammers on the other hand have plenty of time and resources they can use to set up the scam. They mess up for reasons such as low intelligence, being lazy or overwhelming themselves with little psychological support.

You are 100% correct. Your information was likely compromised from a data breach. Banks and credit card companies are highly vigilant of data breaches and will immediately check their database to identify compromised accounts. Unfortunately, the consumer is the last to know that their information was compromised, if they are informed at all. Laws are catching up but it's far too little, too late. The credit card company typically re-issues cards in batches (not unusual for the issuer to re-issue millions of cards). Note that your credit card issuer did not identify where your information was compromised and will remain vague about the sources even though they absolutely know when and where the compromise occurred. Even if they identified the vendor where the compromise took place, often this is not the vendor's fault. So the card issuer will just re-issue the card, write-off the fraud as a loss (won't even make a dent in their profit margins). Often, these compromised account are used to pay for subscriptions to game sites. The issue remains that your information is now out in the open and will be re-sold again and again. Identity theft can cause damages to you that far exceed whatever fraudulent transactions may appear on your credit card. Given they had your email, mailing and billing address, you should consider securing all your banking information including new checking, savings account. I know it's a pain, but you might want to change your email address as well, cell phone numbers and any other personal identification you can change. You can't change your address but anything else that can, should. You are severely exposed at this moment and need to regain your privacy and protect yourself. You are highly vulnerable to identity theft crime at this time and should research what you can do about it. The bank is protected and got their bottom line protected by re-issuing card but you are left in the cold with all the new exposure this data breach created. (I'm a former executive for Fraud, Loss & Prevention for a credit card issuer). You are not out of the woods yet even though the credit card fraud issue has been resolved.

When scamming you dont usually have access to the victims creditcard etc. So no, its not a synonym in any means.

Glad to see it. Misery loves company. One of the scams is that callers say they're responding to an inquiry and emailers will send a case number or an order number or in a common scam they will say there are commissions to be paid to you for you to claim.

When you go on ATM to take money they have put a fake one on top of the real one so they can get your card info. Or maybe if you were paying with a card somewhere, there is a little device when you slip your card there it gets all the card info. It could be that. I hope you find out how was this done. Wish you well.

This is why i use a card not linked to my bank for online purchases. I fill it up when I need to, and get a notification every time a payment is made. In Sweden we have a lot of alternatives, but the one I use is called PFC, it's like Revolut, but just neater imo. I strongly recommend it, since the high competition keeps most of these companys free, it's especially great in financially stuggling times like these to know that your money is safer this way.

Here is what makes this so insidious; you don't even have to purchase goods online to have this happen to you. Banks, finance companies, credit unions, etc. all are connected to the internet, and many have been breached over the past decade. Your credit card could be stolen even though you have never used it on the internet. Not to mention the hand scanners at stores, restaurants and gas stations. At least the banks are much better about refunding the money immediately. I'm old enough to remember the first time my card number was stolen and we had two checks bounce because the bank waited thirty days to refund the money. In any case, until enterprises fix their security issues, which is a moving target, I won't be surprised to see more of these.

Not only that, it seems unlikely that the scammers actually got any money either. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the credit card company doesn't immediately pay the vendor when the transaction goes through, just like you don't (have to) immediately pay your credit card company until some number of days after you receive your bill.

Way back years ago i was using only credit cards online, and guess what my bank manager told me back then: "why dont you use your debit card online, its just as safe". So i used my debit card instead & suddenly had 3 scam withdrawls in just 2 years. Also for the love of the Gods stay clear of G2A. One guy in china simply withdrew from a machine somehow & then i had 3x weird purchases in Japan? Got a refund every time of cause. Then switched back to only use my credit card & havnt really run into anything since. Well, except the one or two odd ebay sellers selling items they never had or send & live off people who cant be bothered to request refunds.

Based on my conversation with a bank officer, the scammer doesn't care if you get notified by SMS. It seems like the bank do not have the right to reject the scam transaction. So the scammer will always receive the money. Instead, The bank only investigate if you are lying to them. If not, you will be 'refunded' by some insurance company to cover the loss.

Two problems: 1. You saw that although 2-level security could have been provided by the store it wasn't. 2. Credit Card companies have discovered they make enough money on high interest rates to simply replace the cards when theft like this takes place. I truly believe they do little or no investigating. I had to almost quit using my credit card when I got ripped off about 2-3 times in as many months.

Monday my card got hacked with a purchase from Herod's in Los Angeles? I thought that was in London and didn't know about any in the US. Anyway, there was another transaction from Waymouth MA, both fraudulent. My bank sent me an e-mail alert, so I independently got on my bank site from the shortcut on my desktop, and, sure enough, the charges were there. My card was cancelled and I paid $5 to have the replacement expedited and am getting it tomorrow. The question begs, how many times per year now is an individual's card going to be cancelled and replaced by how many cards?

A few months back someone bought a $650 Vizio TV on my debit card, shipped to me. Luckily I spotted it soon enough and called Visio, asked them about the order. I told them that was not me and to cancel it. They were very cooperative with me. What puzzles me, was how my info was gotten, and why buy a TV shipped to me. Made no sense at all. I had a new debit card immediately. So far so good. Again, how did they get the pin number as well? Talking to my bank contact, she informed me there is a black market of credit and debit card numbers that's available for sale to any buyer. The buyer then keeps trying them until one works.

I think the samething happened to me. For months, I couldn't figure out how I got charged twice for a zoom purchase of $200 (400 total), no one but me had access to my card information and I have two-factor authentication for any online purchase that apparently got ignored. It was investigated and within 2 weeks, I did get the charges reversed. Card got replaced but it didn't put my mind at ease, as if I didn't know how they got it the first time, how would I prevent it from happening again? So, possibly a breach like you mentioned, where I don't have any control at all? It must be pretty rare, as it's never happened before or since. Literally nothing I could have done to prevent it. And it wasn't like I got a notice of purchase like you did. I only noticed because I happen to look at my statement casually while waiting in line at mcDonald's.

Once I noticed on my bank statement that my debir card was compromised for over $800 with 4 different charges of purchases that I never made. I had to spend like 45 minutes talking to the bank, and the representative was very helpful and cooperative. What these scammers do is that they play the numbers, for instance, out of a thousand scams, maybe 600 people complain and get their money back, those that never look at their statements and never complain, lose their money. If months later they notice the scam, then it's to late to recover their money.

The scammers may even ship the merchandise to be on the safe side as they all want to is get the affiliate commission of the sale by doing bogus dropshipping orders by using stolen data.
