Sweet memories.. my single mom always struggled at end of the month.. We had these and she baked them in the oven, just like a loaded potato stuffing, cheese on top og a pan full of hot dogs . This is looking pretty good Justine. For those that might want their onion a little more cooked, I recommend covering the dish with foil and cooking for about 10 to 15 minutes before removing and finishing uncovered to get a nice finish.

My Mom loved onions! She grew them always in the garden, and prepared them every way possible. She would even eat them raw! So our whole family loves onions, and I know my Mom would have loved this recipe. There have been some great comments on additions or some differences on making them. They all sound delicious! I think I would sauté the onions entirely, then throw on the cheeses right before serving. Forget the oven if you really want caramelization.

I know everyone is free to change up the recipe, so as I watched it i was thinking about those onions and I watched until the end. So I'm thinking it might be a good idea to chop the onions a couple of times probably would bake a little faster and look a little cooler eating it.

If you put a layer of thin sliced tofu between the onions and cheese, and breadcrumbs on top, that's a pretty standard vegetarian casserole. Sometimes made with whole bread slices on top, you turn the whole thing out of the baking dish to serve.

@@leeanne567 Not a strict veggie anymore, but I learned to cook veggie in the dozen years or so I tried to stick it out. (I gave it up, because I blew up in weight. I was 400lbs when I realized and admitted it wasn't going to work.) Raw onions and tofu are delicious together, and putting them on a grilled cheese is really tasty.

Justine I don't understand why so many people want to correct your pronunciation. Would they do that in person to you? I think not. The main thing is you made a delicious dish. "I love onions " like the song said back in the 1950s. Onions are healthy, favorable, can be used various ways. Besides the delicious way you prepared them they are great raw, cooked in stew, a roast, on a pizza, roasted with butter and Worcester sauce in center, in a dressing, a dip with sour cream etc. If you have onions lots of dishes can take on a different flavor including scrambled eggs with onions. Love those little pearl onions with sweet peas 🫛. Keep cooking. Great 👍 👌 chef giving people new ideas 😊 🎉 🌹 💙 💜 💖

The recipe works better with cream of chicken with milk. Cubed ham and Swiss cheese on top with cut French bread dipped in butter and then cover with foil and cook until the onions are soft which is an hour and a half

I found this recipe on the internet a few weeks ago and make it all the time. I use sweet onions, I’ve also added cream of mushroom and cream of chicken. The recipe I found also puts parmesan cheese on top. I once added boneless pork chops in the bottom of the casserole dish then put the onions and cheese on top. It’s a delicious dish.

I basically just cook it til the chops are done which is very long cause I use small center cut chops, I also tried it with boneless, skinless chicken thighs the other day and that turned out good as well. We are always taking recipes and trying different things with them.
