Low-budget remake of Mario Camerini's "Darò un milione" directed by Walter Lang and starring Warner Baxter, Peter Lorre, and Marjorie Weaver. A story is circulated that a millionaire is walking about the streets disguised as a tramp and will give a million dollars to anyone who shows him kindness.

Animal abuse, though. No wonder the chimp ran from her, as she was yelling at him and threatening him with being hit. I had to wonder if the animals in cages were stirred up by some cruel method. In those days nobody was concerned about animal welfare in movies. Of course that's reality, not phony innocence due to extreme censorship that you like so much.

I was enjoying the film until the Monkey became part of it. I do not watch any film that uses animals as they have always been mistreated, tortured, killed...I don't care if I love the old movies or not. Probably, they were less caring back in the day re: animals treatment in film bc today it's not any better. I do not frequent zoos either. For 70 years I remember an old elephant in The Bronx Zoo tied with a heavy chain on her leg standing in the sun for all hours. My mom and I were there. A metal pot for water, and not once did anyone come to see if she was okay. It was only 5 and never ever went back. It still affects me to this day. 😢 🐒 🐘

@Eve K hi Eve. That poor elephant 🐘 has remained in my thoughts my entire life. I was a very quiet child, and God created me even b4 I took my first breath to adore all animals. Sometimes, it's not a blessing bc it hurts so bad. But the huge old elephant rocked back and for hours. She stood on cement, and the chain on her leg was so heavy and tight. Bc I was a quiet, shy child, I didn't know how to express what my heart was feeling to my mom. But I know when asked to go to the zoo, I always said No, no. I pray that when I get to the Rainbow 🌈 Bridge, she is there for me to hug.

Robert DeSantis: When I was 10, growing up in Florida, my obese, pregnant mother was in a bathroom stall at church when she overheard two women laughing and saying how she was so fat, you could never tell when she was pregnant. My mom was shy to begin with, but this made her so humiliated and ashamed, she quit going to church with my dad and us kids, for a couple of years. This was at a Baptist church in the South, and I'm 70 now, but over the years I've attended Catholic, Lutheran, and 'fundamentalist Christian' churches, with the conclusion that they're all basically just culture clubs of groups of people who want to socialize with other people who are the most like themselves as possible. As long as they all look similar; are in the same social class/income level/education level; profess to believe the same ideas; agree politically; and speak with the same accent, they can all have a good time. But let someone show up who differs from the rest of the congregation in any one of these aspects, and they are approached suspiciously; or superficially welcomed, but talked about behind their backs. I used to think church was a place we went to for the purpose of sharing worshipping God with other people who wanted to worship God. It wasn't supposed to be a job interview where you were scrutinized for appearance, political views, social standing and income level. In some congregations, you would probably not fit in, and would always be viewed with suspicion if you had gone to college, used good grammar, or made more money than the rest of the congregation (evidently God doesn't like people actually USING the brains he gave them). In other congregations, you would be shunned if you were "the quiet type", who felt uncomfortable with loud, boisterous glad-handing and arm-waving. BUT even if you DID fit in, meeting all the demographic requirements, -----‐ all those fine and noble spiritual ideas you'd just been reading, singing, and praying about, seemed to vaporize into thin air once people hit the parking lot to go home. And the more a person showed off their 'Jesus talk', and "Praise be"s, and "I'm prayin' for ya!" talk, the more likely they were to be rude, aggressive hypocrites (like one of my own sisters, unfortunately). People are going to be their true natures. They can become better people if they want to, but some don't even seem to understand the concept; and for them, religion is just a culture club/ social activity.

I don't know about low budget because Warner Baxter and Peter Lorre were pretty good actors in their day, W.B. was an "A" list actor when this was made. In any case a damn good movie and if compared to today's movies, it was great.

Maybe low budget bcuz the title music is identical to their Cafe Metropole, that year or year after. Or year after. And they didn't spend a ton on Ivan Lebedeff by then tho truth be told he was truly of the nobility and was a decorated member of the Allied Forces in WWI.

The first time I saw Peter Lorre was in the 60s on tv in an old movie called M. He played a child predator and he was very creepy. In the 60s he was in some horror movies that were comedic and a little over the top. This movie showed his true comedic talent. Loved John Caradine in this. Reminded me of the fox in the Disney Pinocchio movie. 😁

I agree and it's 1:50am for me LOL I wish they could make some movies like this nowadays. The problem is they are so brainwashed to enjoy all the violence, profanity, nudity and sex. TV, movies and video games show so much of it so they think that's how they should live. I couldn't believe the high school had a boy bring a gun to school saying he was going to kill another boy, a girl brought brownies with marijuana in them the said they were calling them the edibles. 3 girls ended up going to the hospital after eating them and they had a fight between 2 girls against 1 and one had a knife. I think the kids have lost their minds this is in a mix of children of middle and upper class families. All that happen today you have to wonder what's going on with those children. I can't believe they didn't say anything on the news the fact there was a gun and a knife at the school. They sent out a email to all the parents and it wasn't on the news because no one was hurt. They arrested the boy with the gun who said he wasn't planning on hurting anyone, the girl with the knife and the girl that brought in the brownies to school. I guess it's a sign of the times we are living in we can only pray people will turn their lives around.
