Baggers serve a purpose. It’s much easier to convince my wife to do a road trip from Puyallup, Washington to Temple, Texas if she knows that we are going to be riding the FLHTK and not the FLSTC. On a trip like that comfort is important and our bagger delivers on comfort. Plus, I’m in my 60s now and I’ve done a lot of riding over the past 45 years. I’ve enjoyed roughing it on a run down to Sturges on my 70s and 80s Shovelheads and Evos but I think I’ve earned the right to maximum comfort on a long road trip. My ass really appreciates it at the end of the day.

I say to the tough guy on the bagger "Let's see you throw your leg over that "girls bike" and ride it from coast to coast and back and not say ouch. But you need that big fairing, cushy seat, air ride suspension... Something your woman would be more comfortable on during a trip and not a sportster? The bagger is the girls bike, because it takes a real man to ride a sportster cross country. The sportster is the real mans bike.

First need a change of clothes, find a salvation army store. You can buy a change of clothes for less than ten bucks. Second, and the way I use the most is I pack a change of clothes into a box. I find a small town along my way and I mail that box to myself address general delivery. I picked a small town because the Post Offices are easier to find. When I first started riding, we called heavily laden H-Ds, "dressers,' or even "garbage wagons." I like bikes which don't require a lot of components to be removed if the bike needs maintenance or repair. Aesthetics-wise, I like a clean/slim machine. "Baggers" just don't have the lines I need. Of course, I've seen plenty of choppers festooned with gawdy bolt-ons. I also don't need a sound system aboard a bike. I see a lot of baggers around my area with sound systems blaring. It's all about what you need/want from a motorcycle. Ride safe.

It's a dick swinging contest. I don't like going to our local bike night because it's full of boomers playing dress up. You hit the nail on the head with this video. It rides like a Dyna but does have bags to throw on for weekend trips. I’ve road buddies big baggers and just can’t get into the feel of it. Kinda like riding a school bus. If I’m packing for a longer trip I use an old navy sea bag that’s always packed with tent,sleeping bag and other essentials for spending the night where ever I end up. Lay it across the throw over bags or the FLD bags and strap it down. I’m ready for whatever comes my way. No need for fancy bags and fairings. To me seeing a naked bike packed with bags strapped down brings back the good old days when we just hit the road and followed the front wheel for a few days.

I agree with you about baggers. I've owned 2 Honda Goldwings. Yes, it took 2 of them to make me realize they were not for me. I first had a 1985 GL1200 Aspencade, then a 1993 GL1500SE. I( bought them for highway use, they were obviously not suitable for running around town on. They were extremely comfortable, but they were also boring, and I didn't like the closed in feeling. Not that different from a convertible car. The reason I ride motorcycles is because I want to be out in the open. I do not like windshields, and do not use one. I do wear full face helmets, and they likely saved my life a couple of times. Once I got hit by a large bird right in the face shield, at 80 mph on the highway. It almost knocked me off the bike, and my neck hurt for weeks afterward. Another time I got hit by an unknown object, again right in the face shield, again on the highway at high speed. I don't know what it was, but it was large, and broke the face shield. Had I been wearing an open face helmet and sunglasses, I almost certainly wouldn't be here now. I do use leather saddlebags when on a longer ride. I attach them to my bike with Easy Brackets, so they can be removed quickly and easily, leaving nothing on the bike but the tiny docking posts. I also use a magnetic tank bag on my '06 Sportster 1200 with the 4.5 gal tank. On really long trips I install a really tall sissy bar, and have a very large bag that attaches to that. I'm 6' 240, and fit the Sportster very well. I also fit on my 1989 FXRS Low Rider very well. I could get along with a bagger a lot better if it just had the bags, without the fairing. But one would not fit in my garage. I have a car and truck in the garage, and I have two bikes parked sideways behind them. I barely have a couple inches left to be able to close the door, without bags. To me the old style ElectraGlide fairing does not look that bad, and you can put a 2" high "windshield" on them. But the modern Streetglide fairing, with the huge computer screen, stereo, and speakers inside it is just simply ridiculous. The whole idea of a stereo on a bike is absurd to me. The sound of the bike is my music. I still prefer a completely uncluttered look up front, with nothing but the instruments. My Sportster does not have a tachometer, so it only has that single speedometer up there. I'd probably be riding a chopper if I were younger and didn't have all the orthopedic issues. And I mean a '60s style chopper, not one of those OCC type things. Sportsters (not the Sportster S), Dynas, and FXRs are REAL bikes. I really don't consider any EFI bike to be a real bike, I call them computers with wheels, and the newer ones are just loaded down with computerized GARBAGE. The new baggers have a screen that's as big as my desktop computer screen, with all the different menus, rider modes, etc. Even cars shouldn't have all that junk. I notice now that even the 1%ers are riding baggers. Used to they wouldn't go near a bagger. To me the absolute worst thing out there is what I call the ghetto bagger. Lowered all the way to the ground with a 30" front wheel. I have never been to a Harley dealer. I have ordered some oem Sportster parts online from a certain Harley dealer located in Maine, but stuff for the FXRS is strictly aftermarket or used.

When I ride my 1986 FXST is like riding a dirt bike next to my 2017 Ultra Limited, I have a hard time backing up the ultra so I took off the tour pack using the quick connect system, and that lightened it up about 75 pounds of top heavy weight. But I love the bike on the road but parking or backing it up in town or even in my garage sucks especially since I am in my sixty's now. I will probably trade it in for a Heritage softail in the future because by the time I get 70 I will be tired of man handling it. Here are my thoughts. I have a Ultra Limited full dresser and a Heritage Soft Tail, both with 114's and Stage 2 torque cams. For me riding solo, I almost always go for the Heritage. I'm good on the Heritage for about 3, maybe 4, hours/day on the soft tail chassis. Longer than that, and my sore ass over rides the enjoyment of the powerful soft tail. My wife won't ride on the Heritage. So, when she rides, we take the bagger. If I go on a ride that's predicted to be longer than about 4 hrs/day, I grab the Ultra Limited. I rode a Sporty for a while and enjoyed it, until I got on a Dresser (Road Glide). I was amazed that the full dresser handled and cornered MUCH better than the Sporty. Technically, I think that the lean angle on the Ultra Limited is slightly better than my Heritage (I often scrap foot boards on both). After getting a dresser, I think what I hated most about the Sporty was the narrow bars; I almost felt like I'd gotten on a mini bike, after being on bagger. Last year, I rode upwards of 31K miles on the bagger. I couldn't have done that on the Heritage. I love both my Heritage and my Ultra Limited, when ridden in the correct (for me) application. BTW, I'm also 5'6", ~160 lbs. I do agree with your comments on the weight of baggers. I have to have my head in the game, every time I stop. I'm looking carefully at the stopping surface for dips, slants, gravel, anything that could cause the bagger to go a few degrees off vertical. It only takes a few degrees, for the dresser to go down.

Atleast from the factory, you got the peanut 2.2gal, a regular 3.3gal, and the Custom/Low 4.6gal. I ran the 4.6gal tank for years, usually 150-180miles per tank. But I've swapped to the 3.3gal tank recently. 100-120miles per tank from my riding.

To each his own, or whatever you say there. Baggers are comfy and suited for long distance travel. I don’t have one and probably never will get one. My Evo Dyna is heavy enough as it is. I guess if I was 20 years younger I might go for one.
@ronfriedman87402 ай бұрын
The saying goes "there's a bike for every ass." Given the riding I do, I prefer the weather protection and luggage capacity of my Goldwing ...you simply get use to its size. Before owing it, I kept a roll bag strapped to my bike's luggage rack for additional layers and rain gear, etc. and a T-bag for weekend rides. Perhaps if I had the garage space and I wanted a 2nd bike to tool around town or bar hop, yeah I'd have a stripped down bobber.

I think people who finance baggers are like retirees that buy RV land yachts. They have this romantic fantasy about taking long tours crossing the country, but most never do, or they do it once & realize the fantasy was better than the reality! ...Or they realize they can`t get away from work to tour their financed bagger because they`ve got payment after payment after payment... In fact that`s the history of most bikes. They get old, but they don`t get ridden. They just sit. Lots of old, low mile HD`s around.

Loved my 09 Electra Glide "Big Red Bitch" . 1800/2000 mile weekends sleeping in a tent. Set the cruise , turn on the tunes and just ride. 700 / 800 miles a day. 6 gals and 45mpg. It was one of my best bikes. THEN about a year ago I sold it. WHY? I quit touring. Tossing that 900 pounds around town, up and down the mountain roads, river roads ECT just got to be to much. If it wasn't 300 miles a day I didn't go out. So I went a year without and now rebuilding the 2000 American IronHorse. Small Bike for Small Rides. Number Two reason? Everyone on the planet bought Street Glides (Black of course) knowing they couldn't handle them, They then trailered them here (Colorado) to drive off a mountain. What would the 1% crowd do if they did not have a bagger to ride. I have a 96 1200 stage 4 sporty chopper. Cant go anywhere without someone commenting on the air brushing or old school sound. I also own a bike that in stock form beats all baggers except the newest 117. Only took Harley 25 years to make one faster than my Valkyrie Interstate. I mostly just ride it around town since I cant handle being more than about 10 miles from home. PTSD thing. The bagger boys dont know even what my bike is with its batwing, dual headlights and GL1500 motor. So quiet compared to my chopper. Plus I like the stereo to play reggae to help keep me calm riding. I would take off the top box but the regular Valkyrie had a tail light on the fender, the interstate has a black plastic filler plate as the interstate has 4 tail light/brake lights mounted on the top box at eye level for car people. To remove the top box I would have to source out an entire taillight assembly and put a new rear wiring harness in to put a tail light/brakelight on the rear fender.

I started laughing to myself, "I'm 6'4"and I'm 280lbs, and I look like gorilla on a little kid's bicycle when I sit on a sportster. And I also have always paid cash for my cars, trucks, and bikes. I do have a 1992 electraglide ultra classic. But my 82 FLT only has saddlebags, no fairing ortourpack, 19" 60 spoke front wheel. Dual fishtails (no baffles) and no emblems. 16" ape hangers, and it's been lowered. Still has the factory floor boards. I actually prefer them. By the way, the 82 FLT weight is 710 lbs fully dressed (dry weight), so I'm gonna guess mine is significantly less. I also have a 1978 flh bobber/chopper, wide glide front 21" front wheel 16 rear, 3" BDL open primary Kickstart only. Barebones solo seat, Upsweep exhaust (Paughco) fxr rear fender, tombstone taillight. And many other mods over the years, it was my first big twin harley. More years ago than I want to admit I also have a 1991 springer softtail satin black with custom flame pinstripes, done and signed by Wild . The most I paid for any of my bikes is $4,500, and that was for the 92 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. (52,000 miles) The 1982 FLT was the most recent at $3,000. (I'm pretty sure I stole it at that price) Runs and rides great.

Thanks for the reply, I meant to add that back in 1980. My first harley was a 1974 iron head, and I absolutely loved it. I ended up trading it in on my 78 Flh in 1983 or 84. I can't remember for sure. 61 year old brain, plus all the damage I did to it back in the day, hahaha The 70s and 80s were great. I just wish I could remember them. Hahaha All kidding aside, I always liked the sportster and wish I didn't look so ridiculous riding one, or I would have one in my stable now.

I gonna contribute to the echo chamber here. I do not like bagger bikes they have their purpose and that is to ride lots of miles comfortably. I just can't stand the way they look i dont like the batwing or the shark nose, the new lowrider st fairing is better looking in my opinion, still waiting on advane black to make a kit for my early dyna. The billybada$$ seems to be on point though. My cousin bought a like 2021 electra and he immediately became the typical harley guy even though he owned a honda 750 shadow for the past 20+ years. I do get looked down on for riding my sportster and my dyna, getting told that the bagger is nice and comfortable and it doesn't shake (atleast my cousins m8 doesn't). If i wanted a bagger id buy one just cant stand the looks, even the cool fast ones😅.
