Professional landscape gardener here. Like everyone else has said (and as you are already doing!), ignore the haters! You've achieved your goal and made a huge improvement. It's so much tidier, more accessible and easier to maintain now. And dayum, that driveway pops! 🔥 Also, full credit to you for taking advice and critique. Like you say, you probably went a bit too hard on that one conifer (it looks like a cypress) and it will probably remain brown on the side, but over time it might come back, and at least the driveway access is restored. But trimming back hard all the other shrubs is fine. They will grow back. Looks like lonicera and jasmine to me, and they're tough as old boots! The ball shapes near the house look like viburnum, and they'll come back too, no problem. You can rightly be proud of that teardrop shape on the other conifer! Lovely job 👍 If I can share some advice on rose pruning: hard pruning them is not a problem, but I would have waited until late winter, early Spring to do it. Also, roses can sometimes suffer from die-back if the cuts are not super clean, so cutting with a trimmer is a risk, nice sharp secateurs are best. But given you're doing this for free and time is of the essence, compromises need to be made, and trimming them with the trimmer should be ok. If you're planning a follow-up visit (perhaps if she comes around to the idea of getting you to clean the roof! 🤞) I would really recommend googling "how to winter prune roses", and you'll get some great tips on fairly simple techniques to maximise flowering next year, and you could quickly go over them again... Ideally you're aiming for a vase shape, with air and space in the middle, avoiding criss-crossing branches and dead wood, cutting to the angle of an outward facing bud... Very well done and kudos for having the initiative and positive attitude to just get it done. 🔥👍
@DanProcrastinatesDIYКүн бұрын
I winced when he shredded the roses. He needs to get some secateurs. When doing anything new research research research. I wouldn't necessarily go on advice from people in the comments either unless they say the same as trusted online sources.

Nick, you did a great job! Cutting the overgrowth made a big difference. The driveway is wider and so much brighter. You were out of your comfort zone and you did well for a first timer. You’ll get better with more practice. Get some pruners and it will be easier to cut smaller limbs. There are also limb saws you can invest in. Don’t listen to the negative comments! You have no need to apologize for the job you have done. You are honest about your lack of experience with formal yard work and open to suggestions. In addition you worked for hours in POURING DOWN RAIN 😯.....that's commitment!!! Whether shrubs are removed is often left up to the homeowner unless they have given the decisions making to you. In the case of that one you removed... it was clearly dead or well on the way. The other big bush that people said will not grow back where you cut it, it needs to be removed altogether. It and most of the shrubs have out grown their places from neglect. If you have spare time and and interest there is a channel 'Kustorez' on youtube on which the fella primarily cuts, trims and removes hedges and shrubs. He lives in Germany and is a master at trimming. The property looks 100% better than it did. 👍❤

The bushes you trimmed back around the conifer outside the garage is a prolific grower. I would have cut them back much further to at least the edge of the flower bed and away from the lovely big conifer at the front as it will eventually strangle that tree too. We'll done though. For a self confessed non gardener, you've done great. Keep up the good work. Love watching your videos

Lot of plants you are dealing with I've never seen before. Neighbor had a fall so I took over trimming her bushes, I'm 82 female, no easy task as all her bushes are different than mine. Sharp points on Holly, Bottle Bush gets brush- like blooms & attracts bees which I'm allergic to so it takes awhile to learn about the various plants & how to deal with them. You are doing great tho,I think a mini chainsaw would be a great addition to your tools! Glad the neighbor told you how much lady loves what you have done for her!

Nick, you are doing wonderful work whether cleaning roofs, driveways, or helping this lady out. Folks who sit at home and write negative comments do not have happy lives. Perhaps they too could get out there and help a neighbor or anyone by doing something kind. An easy one is to simply pick up trash every time you're out for a walk. We've done it for years and it helps our neighborhood and most importantly, the wildlife. Please don't lose sight of the fact that the majority of us watching think you are wonderful! Nick, I'm always amazed at your quality of work. As far as those who complain, I'd like to know how many people they've helped. As someone who does a lot of gardening, sometimes you have to be really drastic with cutting back unhealthy plants to give them a chance. Sometimes they won't. Usually if they don't, it's because they were too far gone well before they got cut back. I'm from the US, and there are pine trees who'd cones won't release their seeds until there is extreme heat. Only a severe forest fire will make these cones open. This is the trees way of making sure all underbrush and conditions that would stifle and kill the seedling are gone, giving it a better chance at survival. Well, that's the same with these plants. Once all the suffocating overgrowth is taken away, they can really begin to survive. I always enjoy your videos, and wish you nothing but the best. God bless you!!
