Make sure you arrange to take a guided tour at Monument Valley. You can only get off the highway and main loops if you are with a Navajo guide, because it is Tribal land. I did a photography tour and got to see sandstone arches, the interior of a hogan, talk with Navajo women about their lives living simply on the land, besides some beautiful vistas we’d never see on our own. When you’re on Tribal land, make sure you stop at one of the places serving Navajo food. Fry bread and mutton stew are a must. ( Yes, I know you’re probably very familiar with mutton). Make sure you have plenty of water, a blanket, downloaded maps, and warm clothes. The deserts get pretty cool to cold at night in November. Dressing in layers is key.

Shaun, I'm putting my two cents in on this one: As others have mentioned, if you can, you might try to squeeze in some southern Utah national parks: Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. Also, about an hour and twenty minutes east of Sedona is Barringer Crater, AKA Meteor Crater. The crater is 170 m deep, almost 1.2 km across, and was created some 50,000 years ago.

Tips for driving in the desert: make sure you have water in your car. Not just a water bottle or two, but several or just buy a gallon jug to refill your bottle. This is just in case you get stranded. Also, there will be large areas where you will not have cellular coverage, so make sure you have downloaded your route or digital map, or have a paper map, or have an updated stand-alone gps device. Have snacks and a blanket in your car….again, just in case you get stranded. Never let your gas tank get below half a tank if at all possible - you’ll never know when you’ll be able to refill next. Otherwise….enjoy your trip and have a blast!

The autumn leaves in Boston are brilliant. You'll really like it! Boston is such a great city to tour, especially if you're into American history. Even though most of America isn't very pedestrian-friendly, Boston is one of the exceptions. The metro in Boston (better known as "the T") is great, and will take you to just about anywhere you need to go. You're very wise to visit the desert Southwest during the autumn instead of the summer!

SHAUN, what you really need to do on a separate trip is to do the Mighty Five (National Parks) Tour in Southern Utah (which could include Monument Valley). The Parks are Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Bryce Canyon. And a good starting point for that trip would be Vegas. You can fly right into Vegas International Airport, rent a car (a Jeep would be good for that one) and take that Tour. It would take a good 7 to 10 days, as you'd wanna spend at least 2 days at each National Park, and then there's several smaller State Parks around the region that you can check out in just a day each. Zion is just 2 hours (~120 miles) up the road from Vegas on I-15. So that'd be your first stop. Bryce Canyon is next. Then Capitol Reef. Then up to Arches. Back down to Canyonlands. And then down thru Monument Valley. (It's a big circle thru the Southern Utah desert. But the thing is, the drive to each Park is just as interesting and beautiful as the Parks themselves. I'm surprised that whole section wasn't declared a National Park back in the day, but I guess that would have restricted any development on it. As there are a few towns throughout.

It’s called the Uncle Sam. They have regular locals on a daily basis who can tell you some stories. Also, Lake Ouachita is amazing for kayaking. There are islands all over the river you can kayak to😢 and camp. Hot Springs has hot spring baths on Bathhouse Row located in Hot Springs Nat’l Park, along with horse racing and casino. As a Boston native: 1) I will say that Salem is an awesome take in during Halloween, but be warned, it's always crazy busy. So get there EARLY if you want to get any kind of decent parking. Also, if you go, make sure to hit up the "Pioneer Village" which is on the outskirts of the city, and a fun little take in if you've ever seen Hocus Pocus. 2) Some places to go in the city are the "Freedom Trail" in general, USS Constitution if its open, Castle Island in South Boston, The Boston Public Library in Copley Square (trust me it's amazing in there) Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in general which is next to the Isabella, The Bell in Hand Tavern, the Paul Revere house. Any Restaurant in the North End. 3) if you have the time Plymouth Rock/ Plantation to the south or the Kangamangus Highway out of Lincoln New Hampshire to the North. Cape Cod is nice, but personally, I find it a little overrated.

Shaun, Monument Valley is a very good choice--beautiful place. While on the Navajo Reservation, I'd recommend a tour of Canyon de Chelly (de SHAY), plus a drive to Rainbow Bridge. You may not know that this is the largest tribe in the USA and Canada, at around 170,000 speakers of their language, and the size of the reservation is 27,413 sq. mi./44,108 sq. km., which is a bit larger than WV. They were also the tribe with the most participants in the code talkers program during WW2. Up near Page is another beautiful place called Antelope Canyon. If it's not on the reservation, it's very close to it.

Sedona, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley are all must-sees in the area! Another recommendation (that you may not have time for this trip) is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) a bit south of Phoenix in Tucson. It’s a museum/zoo with flora and fauna indigenous to the area, and (except for the summer) they have their Raptor Free Flight which is amazing! It's consistently one of the top zoo’s in the country (usually ranks in the top 10), and one of the best ways to learn about the desert in Southern Arizona! We live in Tucson, where the ASDM is located, so if you make a trip back and have time to spend in Southern AZ there are some wonderful sights down here too. Tucson arguably has the BEST Mexican food in the US, our Sonoran Dog is to die for. Just some of the things to see in the southern part of Arizona… Tombstone (the OK Corral), Old Tucson (movie studio where a LOT of classic westerns were filmed), Mt. Lemmon, Pima Air and Space Museum, the Boneyard (military aircraft “graveyard”), Bisbee, Saguaro National Park, etc… and I'm missing a lot. In fact there so much down here we could take a month off of work and not miss a day of things to see or do within a 2-3 hour drive. We’d love to give you the grand tour! Advice I give everyone from non-desert climates on visiting the desert SW - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Always have water with you, even in the winter. The dry heat tricks you into thinking your fine, then suddenly you’re feelin’ kinda woozy. It still happens to me sometimes (I’m bad at drinking water), and I’ve been here 40+ years.
@AC-ni4gt2 ай бұрын
I agree. Not just because I live in a desert too. But because one too many tourists either 1) pass out from not being hydrated enough or 2) not make it home at all.

The ASDM is fantastic. I would like to drive to it sometime when it's not pouring, lol. I'm a desert rain storm magnet. Last time I went to CA, the bridge on I-10 at Tex Wash was washed out after a freak rain storm. Sabino Canyon is such a contrast to the drier surroundings. Shaun, Sonoran cuisine is a special. It is different from what we have in Texas and New Mexico. You need to try a carne seca burro, carne deshebrada con papas and coyotas. Sonoran hot dogs are great. The best are from food trucks. Yelp can help you find the best one. Popovers (fry bread) are good too.

Shawn- I have been to San Diego at least 8 times. A very good suggestion is to start with the OLD Town Trolley Tour of San Diego. You can get it in Old town. This will take you around the city and it is hop on hop off so you can spend some time in each attraction. Then ones that you really like you can go back to on your own. And you can get lots of footage. They come every 15 minutes. And the places that don't interest you, you can skip going back. I would try to get there at 9AM and the last trolley is at 4PM. Worth every penny. Around $50 per person . I would highly recommend at least 5 hours at the San Diego Zoo. It is the best in the country and the landscaping is amazing. Also, San Diego Wild animal park is a once in a life time chance to see wild animals up close. The animals stay in place and a monorail or walking trails take you to them.

Utah is one of the most beautiful states in the country and has five national parks. Zion national Park is only a 2 hour drive from the Grand Canyon north rim. Bryce Canyon National Park is about 90 minutes from Zion National Park. I’ve been to San Diego and I’ve been to Phoenix they are both typical desert cities with all the amenities and venues that you would expect a large city to offer but Utah’s national parks are spectacular. If you’re interested in learning about that area and its magnificent natural beauty, google The Colorado Plateau. There are nine national parks and 18 national monuments on the Colorado plateau including the five national parks in Utah and of course Grand Canyon NP . The plateau covers parts of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico totaling 130,000 mi.² . The elevations on the plateau range from 2,461 feet at the bottoms of the canyons to 12,600 feet above sea level on the mountain peaks.

Well, it looks like you’ve been given some really good advice from a lot of people in the comment section. I would support what a lot of them are saying about bringing extra supplies, water, blankets, food in the car. Also make sure that the car you hire is in good condition. If you have the option, you should rent either a full-size car or a small sports utility vehicle SUV. Don’t get one of the gas guzzler because fuel is getting more expensive here right now. Get something that’s in good condition. If you have a choice. definitely stock up on things like beef jerky, and things that won’t spoil if you’re going to be in the car for a few hours at a time. I applaud you going to see Native American lands in the desert areas. They have lived there for hundreds and thousands of years and they can tell you some very interesting stories. Ask them about the red haired giants! (the modified remains of red haired giant have recently been found laid to rest in the caves in several places in the desert states.). Sounds like you have a full itinerary. Sometimes it’s great to just wander around a little bit and find off the beaten track places. That’s what I did when I lived in the UK for a number of years. I went to the places that the tourists did not normally go and that’s where I found the real people and the real flavor of the country I was staying in. So I would recommend you do that. Eat and drink and do the things that the locals do and you will get the flavor. The desert can also be dangerous, so please heed a voice of warning… Not travel on roads that are well marked and with plenty supplies, but be very aware that we are having some issues With Border security on the southern border right now, so please be mindful of how close you get to the southern border. I’m not being political. I’m just telling you the truth. I am a security professional. I work in the industry. Just keep your eyes and ears open and be careful. Don’t wander too far off the main roads down in that part of the country without a guide, preferably somebody who is local and knows the area well. If you’re going to stop somewhere in Utah, you could do worse than head through the area of St. George. It is absolutely beautiful out there. I had a family member that traveled there last year to meet friends and she was blown away because she has never been she actually wanted to move there after she saw it.:-) She also got a chance to go into an open house at one of the temples of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints at St. George and was blown up away by that as well. As far as Boston goes, I fully recommend at least having a pint in one of the bars around Boston Harbor, like the purple Shamrock or Roisin Dubh or kitty O’Shea’s. Definitely get a lobster roll and a beer. I had a blast in Boston when I was in the Navy and we stopped there for a few days. Charlestown in the gaslight District is beautiful. You could get some good Italian food along Mulberry Street. South Bend is a blast. Those people are crazy party animals down there. Last time I was there they had a big construction project which I think is done now. You can go to see the founders Cemetery, where people like Benjamin Franklin are buried. You can go to Faneuil Hall to see where liberty was born in America or you could even go to the old North Church, which has been talked about in the legends of American history but they may or may not be open. You could go to Paul Revere‘s house. Lots of stuff to do around Boston. When I used to travel, I always did three things. I would eat the food that the locals ate at a place that was popular locally. I would try to learn something about the history and culture of the people and their country, especially locally. I would try to learn some of the language that way they talked, and just talk to people and get to know who they were. When you do those three things, the people respect you and they love you because you’re interested in who they are Not just a tourist who has come to entertain themselves and go to the tourist spots. It makes a difference. Glad you’re going to be making the trip back, I would be careful if you’re going to be around large groups of people during election week because things are a little tense in the states right now. This is a very important event and unfortunately there are some people who are pretty extreme in their views on both sides which could possibly end up causing some civil disorder so please be careful. Those are all my warnings and recommendations. You and the missus have a great time and a safe flight. God bless.

I hope you have good weather for your trip. It can get very cold and even snow in November at the Grand Canyon. I hope you have a great time throughout your travels around America.

Given your timeline, it would make much more sense to go LA, down the beautiful coast to San Diego, then over to Palm Springs, and on to Arizona, an easy 3.5 hour drive on Interstate 10. If you go to Joshua Tree, you should go up to Pioneer Town & eat at Pappy & Harriets. In Palm Springs you should take a tour of the mid-century modern homes - you can tour the homes and hangouts of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, etc.

Hi Shaun, I'm so glad you're coming to the SW! I live in AZ and grew up in CA. Given your time constraints I recommend focusing on the nature spots rather than the cities bc they're too incredible to miss. Skip San Diego and go to Saguaro National Park near Tucson, AZ. Only spend a day or less in Phoenix as a pit stop. Try to squeeze in more of the national parks in Utah as others suggested. It is the most incredibly beautiful state (other than Arizona 😉), it will blow your mind. If you can't do Utah proper on this trip, please prioritize it when you come back for NM.

Also, even though it's touristy, take a Pink Jeep Tour in Sedona and they can take you to nature spots more off the beaten path. The drive out from Sedona to Flagstaff is stunning. If you don't go to Flagstaff, you would just drive 15 minutes in that direction and come back bc that's the most beautiful part of the trip. Williams is a cute Route 66 town on the way to the Grand Canyon. Worth stopping for a meal. Others suggested visiting Wilson, Tombstone and Jerome, but in my opinion, your schedule is too tight and the other places in Utah are way more incredible.

One more thing, lol. It might sound strange or woo woo, but I recommend taking a UFO tour in Sedona, for a very unique, mind-expanding experience. It has one of the highest sightings of UFOs in the world. The natives have known about this far before it was ever colonized. They give you military-grade goggles and you're guaranteed to see at least a dozen. The most reputable one is with the "Center for the New Age" in town. Overall, although touristy, Sedona is a highly sacred and spiritual area.

First thing, if you're going to San Diego you are required by law to try fish tacos... In Palm Springs, visiting Sunnylands is worthwhile if you like design and architecture. It's basically the west coast Camp David. Joshua Tree is awesome, as are all the Utah national parks. Zion is my favorite.

8:39pm pst. Do also be aware that very high altitudes can cause illness. Some folks fare well and others really struggle. Research some strategies to help you if you intend to spend time being "high". Safe and fun travels to you both!

I grew up in Arizona, Phoenix. It can get quite chilly in Northern Arizona in November. There can, although rarely, be snow that time of year. So keep that in mind for clothing. Phoenix will be mild and sunny.

If you had more time in Sedona, I'd recommend driving up to Jerome for some gallery hopping. Jerome is an old mining town. Mining played/s a big role in the history and modern economy of AZ.

There's a small museum at Monument Valley that's worth the stop. Utah is amazing! I took a 1,000-mile road trip through it, and it was unexpectedly beautiful.

Shaun...sounds like a great trip! Salem on Halloween sounds amazing, as does Boston, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and San Diego. Don't forget the San Diego zoo!!! Can't wait to watch the videos! ❤

It’s going to be very very busy in Salem during the Halloween! Forewarning there will be difficulties parking. I think Salem was ok for what it was and I did enjoy the ghost tours but it’s very catered to tourists. Come to Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut one day it’s really cool inside and you gotta eat at Frank Pepe’s. Boston is a great city the Quincy Market is a must because it’s close to the aquarium and the hockey/basketball arena. There’s a parking garage nearby the New England aquarium try parking there. There are whale watching boats at the aquarium as well. It’s all within walking distance.

So glad your coming g back. My husband and I watch all your channels from Houston. Love you guys! Be careful in vegas, F1 will be on the strip nov 21-23 and half of strip is closed for it. But downtown Las vegas which is our favorite, old school vegas, is having a huge free music festival. Can't wait to watch your new adventures.

If you drive through Camp Verde, Arizona (between Phoenix & Sedona, right off Interstate 17) Montezuma Castle is a really cool stop. It won’t suck up a lot of time either, I would say an hour or so would be plenty of time to explore everything.

Hey Shaun, congratulations. Sedona is actually into the mountains slightly and more leaving the desert. Where are you staying at the Grand Canyon? I hope it's the El Tovar Hotel. Eat in their dining room. If not there then Williams AZ is nice to stay in. Eat and drink at Grand Canyon Brewery and Distillery in Williams.

Please keep Western North Carolina in your thoughts & prayers. It’s bad, really bad Shaun. Some parts will never be the same ever again. The rest will take years to recover. There WILL BE volunteer opportunities for you both to help should you feel led to do so. The scale of devastation is hard to fathom.
