My entire family didn't understand why I was overweight because I didn't eat much. I didn't eat a lot but when I counted my calories I was consuming 2500 to 3000 a day. I really didn't eat much but I ate high calorie foods and drank one to two sodas a day. I eat more now but only consume 1500 to 1800 calories a day (this includes ice cream every day but I measure it out) and exercise and now maintain a weight of about 125lbs and have maintained my weight loss for three years.

This reminded me of a woman in the gym I sometimes speak to. She's very overweight and she constantly tells me how she "hasn't eaten anything all day" (we go to the gym in the evening), but I always see her drinking coke instead of water. I don't tell her anything about it, she definitely knows what's bad for her because of the guilt I see in her face when I'm drinking from my water bottle and she has a coke in her hand. I refuse to waste my energy on someone who doesn't want to change. If she eventually asks for tips, I'll help her, but if not, I'll just focus on myself. It's exhausting dealing with someone so deep in their delusions.

Im a slender girl. I eat healthy and I cant eat a lot of I get sick but sometimes I "Mysteriously" put on a bunch of weight. It might be 2lbs today and tomorrow it might be 10lbs. This really was a mystery to me. Once I tried restricting my calories to 1400 everyday for a week and that week I put on 30lbs. Now that might seem impossible. And it is, sort of. Turns out I have a kidney disease and when it acts up I get edema. Its liquid building up on my body because I pee out all my protein and this causes a huge weird chain of events. Including my cholesterol to shoot up to the moon. If you really are experience what you think is mysterious weight gain please go see a doctor about it. I completely agree with your point and some people do it far more than others, to the point it gets ridiculous and feels wilfully ignorant. But I used to be very good at ‘noticing’ it in others, when really I wasn’t fully understanding their situation or even when I was right I’d be ignoring all those same aspects in myself. I wish everyone was more able to look inwardly and honestly self examine without judgement or ego getting in the way so much, it would do so much to solve this problem in people.

I think this is great advice for people who suffer from “have NO idea how I’m gaining all this weight” delusions. My biggest problem with eating too much (and not knowing) is because of my disability. I survived a stroke before I turned 1 year old, which affects everyone who has ever survived one differently. One aspect is I have a tendency to prep and eat foods, and have ZERO MEMORY of doing it. It was humiliating while growing up. Every time I walked by the cookie jar, my hand went in and I'd eat 1 or 2... again WITH ZERO KNOWLEDGE of doing so. Then ask who made the food or where all the cookies went... which was me. So I ate it anyway instead of putting it away for another time. Other times, my mom would catch me rummaging through the fridge or pantry then tell me to eat fruit. I LITERALLY DID NOT KNOW that I was doing this. So I'd just leave the kitchen with nothing. After I moved out, the weight piled on because I had nobody asking me about why I was in the kitchen. It's more like sleep eating than a mindless habit.

Meanwhile for dinner, she'd have a quarter loaf of take-n-bake garlic bread, some iceberg lettuce with at least 3-6 tablespoons of thousand island dressing and a quarter cup of shredded cheese, a 6-8oz steak or hamburger helper, and a couple cups of frozen or canned veggies, then ice cream for dessert. This is all after her Dutch Bros coffee and footlong subway for lunch. But you couldn't tell her anything, aint nobody madder than someone told they should put down the fork if they want to lose weight

@@eat_buttons That's true, but it also shows the extreme sides of how we eat/diet. Those who eat whatever they want and do not realize how bad their obesity becomes, compared to those who don't recognize how their diet is very poor/lacking and how detrimental it can be in the long term. Plus, not many shows nowadays discuss EDs, which is still a big concern in healthcare, yet we don't discuss it as much as in the 2000s.

I am beyond happy that I found your channel. 2 years ago, I would have frowned at your content because I always played victim, but after a serious health scare that left me disabled and bed ridden for most of 2023, it scared me to the point where I stopped being a "poor me baby b*tch" and became a survivor. For the first time in over 15 years, I am no longer obese, working out 5x a week in the gym for the first time ever, and eating an anti-inflammatory diet, which is greatly improving my condition. I learned the valuable lesson that you can either make excuses, rely on others to fix your problems, and perish, or find a solution, take control, and thrive. Thank you for reaffirming this with your content.

From personal experience, I'm down nearly 60lbs, and the reduction in the amount of junk food I eat and the increase of physical activity I do both have a correlation to it. So I personally I don't believe anyone who says they don't eat and can't lose weight.

Counting calories and writing down EVERYTHING I ate for a week opened my eyes about my calorie intake. It wasn't until I saw the hard numbers of how much all those little snacks added up that I realized how much I was actually consuming on a daily basis. Now I'm focusing on portion control rather than shock diets and things are going much better. Losing weight slowly but steadily and feeling better and more energetic.

It is great if you make your own dressings/sauces/marinades… just cutting some ingredients in 1/2 and adding water can transform the caloric content… it’s kinda … fun? Definitely recommend getting a food scale, it makes it so much easier. ❤

I’m at a healthy regular weight but what helped me lose the extra lbs was cutting down fried/processed foods/sweets, cooking at home more, replacing sweet drinks with water and coffee, cutting down a lot of my carb intake and replacing with veggies and just try to eat as healthy as possible. I can somewhat understand why people would think they’re eating healthier than they really are because even a small treat can pack over 300-400 calories. It might not seem like much but sometimes it is

Yeah, cutting out processed foods in favor of whole real foods, and not drinking calories is huge. Drinking sugary drinks, and consuming sugar in general, actually interferes with the brain's satiety signals. When I cut sugars, starches and grains out of my diet, I found that I stopped wanting to eat anymore way before my stomach was stuffed, and never have cravings. Breaking the refined carb addiction was rough at first though...

The doctor put me on metformin which helps your body to use the insulin like it's supposed to instead of resisting it, and I joined weight watchers. It holds me accountable with tracking not just food but water consumption and activity, offers me a supportive community, and really makes me mindful of portion control. I've completely given up soda as of 6 days ago and drink water in a Cirkul bottle. It's a lifestyle change that I'm fully embracing. I've been working out at home to Grow with Jo & Leslie Sansone. So far I've lost 11.4 lbs. I'm documenting my journey here on KZbin.

“I do everything right but not losing weight” is a crazy common mindset I see in my diet groups. It’s crazy how people can convince themselves their coffee flavoured liquid sugar from Starbucks and snacks throughout the day “doesn’t count”. Denial is severe. It’s hard even teaching people dousing your salad in dressing is counter productive, or that there’s TONS of sugar and calories in condiment’s. Pay attention and be honest with yourself everything you eat and drink. It *all* counts.

Honestly, one of the best tricks you can to do this at home is to write down everything that goes into your mouth, including water and snacks. Not only do you see what you eat, you become more conscious of what you’re eating because you have to write it down. You can also write down how you’re feeling to see if it is comfort or boredom.

She had just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and still ate the same at home I guess. She also had a fb friend who would post health updates after a medical scare of some kind. She’s obese and the doctor said she and her husband need to lose weight. She would post pics of meals that wouldn’t even be enough to feed a rabbit. Everyone in the comments kept telling her to stop doing that because she’s just going to binge later on if all you eat for dinner is some carrots, a potato and asparagus. Well guess who couldn’t lose weight despite eating more veggies and less fats?

Obviously this is frustrating to see, but lately Ive developed a bit more sympathy for folks who overeat to this degree. A few months ago for a class assignment I tracked everything I ate right down to the squares of dark chocolate I like to snack on after a meal and realized I vastly underestimated how much I was consuming and barely even remembered eating those things, and the only reason they were written down was because I tracked them as I ate. I FINALLY brought up the eating disorder I struggle with in therapy, and its gotten much better, as now I no longer seem to have these "food blackouts" where I just eat and eat without noticing it. Obviously Im not saying these women or even myself were having selective amnesia (This lady in particular was clearly lying as I was to myself haha) just that some flavours of EDs *really* fuck with your perception of consumption

As someone who’s been in ED inpatient treatment: there are metabolic adaptations in extreme cases. Hypermetabolism is relatively common in re-feeding, especially with risk of re-feeding syndrome. In this setting patients are watched 24/7. The kitchen is often locked. Food is measured and tracked. Patients are watched while they eat. Even trash cans are checked. Bathroom doors remain open to stop purging. I’ve seen people who are on 4000 calorie meal plans who can’t gain weight or very slowly gain weight. This is usually temporary but still happens. On the other hand, hypo metabolism is also common in recovery. While I was inpatient I was on one of the lowest meal plans, and still didn’t finish everything. I gained 7 pounds in a couple weeks. And earlier in outpatient, gained 12 pounds in a few weeks. I’ve seen this happen with others. I have PCOS and at the time severe hypo-thyroid from my ED. I recently got a DEXA scan, and I’m currently relapsing. It said my BMR is 1050 calories (it was 1450 a few months ago) and I lost 5 pounds of lean body mass. So obviously, going from starving yourself to normal intake would cause rapid weight gain temporarily. Hypo-metabolism was measured in many contestants of the Biggest Loser years later. If someone has had extreme dieting or ED for a long time, they may want to get their BMR, lean mass, thyroid, etc checked, and work on recovering that before restricting further.

Counting calories is NOT necessarily an eating disorder. It is NECESSARY for someone to lose weight. I was anorexic so I took it to an extreme, but any obese person who is trying to lose weight, needs to be aware of the amount of calories etc. At least these 2 women faced it, unlike a lot of the obese people on KZbin that are on weight loss/fitness journeys and don't measure or count calories and never lose weight. The lack of accountability and lack of looking at reality in and of itself is a disease. You cannot out train a bad diet!!!

Man this is such a great concept for a show! I had a friend who would say she just couldn’t lose weight. She would also offer me things like filled croissants and donuts and tell me “I checked, this only has 50 calories”. She would straight up lie to me, fortunately I knew better. She tried to sabotage me because I lost 50 lbs and she “couldn’t lose weight”. That was one of many reasons I stopped being her friend. It was crazy to me that she was not only lying to herself, but to me as well so I would stay fat with her.

Lol...being a "food detective" sounds like an awesome job! Instead of documenting someone cheating on a spouse, you're documenting people cheating on their "diets." 😂.

Thank you Michelle, for making informative yet funny videos & for always reminding us to be accountable for ourselves. You have inspired me to make a food journal and start counting calories (which btw OMG I had no idea what I was drinking was so high in calories) and I’ve started working out again. In just a very short time I have already started losing weight and can’t wait to fit back into my jeans. I appreciate you for sticking with doing all that you do even though you are always being yelled at, lied on & made fun of because you truly do mean a lot to a whole lot of people. Thank You

I needed this reminder. I gained about 4 pounds recently. I would swear I haven't been eating that bad but the numbers don't lie. That;s ok weight loss is fairly easy when you're being honest with yourself. Just gotta get back on track.
