This reminded me of a woman in the gym I sometimes speak to. She's very overweight and she constantly tells me how she "hasn't eaten anything all day" (we go to the gym in the evening), but I always see her drinking coke instead of water. I don't tell her anything about it, she definitely knows what's bad for her because of the guilt I see in her face when I'm drinking from my water bottle and she has a coke in her hand. I refuse to waste my energy on someone who doesn't want to change. If she eventually asks for tips, I'll help her, but if not, I'll just focus on myself. It's exhausting dealing with someone so deep in their delusions.

My biggest problem with eating too much (and not knowing) is because of my disability. I survived a stroke before I turned 1 year old, which affects everyone who has ever survived one differently. One aspect is I have a tendency to prep and eat foods, and have ZERO MEMORY of doing it. It was humiliating while growing up. Every time I walked by the cookie jar, my hand went in and I'd eat 1 or 2... again WITH ZERO KNOWLEDGE of doing so. Then ask who made the food or where all the cookies went... which was me. So I ate it anyway instead of putting it away for another time. Other times, my mom would catch me rummaging through the fridge or pantry then tell me to eat fruit. I LITERALLY DID NOT KNOW that I was doing this. So I'd just leave the kitchen with nothing. After I moved out, the weight piled on because I had nobody asking me about why I was in the kitchen. It's more like sleep eating than a mindless habit.

I used to be one of those “eat everything I want and can’t gain weight” girlies and yeah. Turned out I was regularly under eating and in deep denial about my disordered eating patterns. But ya know I ate a burrito once every two weeks and a donut sometimes so yeah. Thought it was a big mystery lol.

@stormyk244 First, I hope you haved recover or getting there with your disorder eathing. Yes just drink most of my food. The only time I eat a lot is when I go out to eat with others. I know they would be concerned if they really knew how much I ate. People overestimate or underestimate what they eat and so it is best when you have a goal to keep track of it all.

I’m at a healthy regular weight but what helped me lose the extra lbs was cutting down fried/processed foods/sweets, cooking at home more, replacing sweet drinks with water and coffee, cutting down a lot of my carb intake and replacing with veggies and just try to eat as healthy as possible. I can somewhat understand why people would think they’re eating healthier than they really are because even a small treat can pack over 300-400 calories. It might not seem like much but sometimes it is
@markbeiser8 ай бұрын
Yeah, cutting out processed foods in favor of whole real foods, and not drinking calories is huge. Drinking sugary drinks, and consuming sugar in general, actually interferes with the brain's satiety signals. When I cut sugars, starches and grains out of my diet, I found that I stopped wanting to eat anymore way before my stomach was stuffed, and never have cravings. Breaking the refined carb addiction was rough at first though...

My eyes are basically always bigger than my stomach and most of the time I'm satisfied by the end of my meal with half what i wanted. Also, take your time to eat!! That way your "I'm full" cues can catch up with your eating speed.

I just recently found out I was insulin resistant. It was definitely my wake up call. The doctor put me on metformin which helps your body to use the insulin like it's supposed to instead of resisting it, and I joined weight watchers. It holds me accountable with tracking not just food but water consumption and activity, offers me a supportive community, and really makes me mindful of portion control. I've completely given up soda as of 6 days ago and drink water in a Cirkul bottle. It's a lifestyle change that I'm fully embracing. I've been working out at home to Grow with Jo & Leslie Sansone. So far I've lost 11.4 lbs. I'm documenting my journey here on KZbin.

“I do everything right but not losing weight” is a crazy common mindset I see in my diet groups. It’s crazy how people can convince themselves their coffee flavoured liquid sugar from Starbucks and snacks throughout the day “doesn’t count”. Denial is severe. It’s hard even teaching people dousing your salad in dressing is counter productive, or that there’s TONS of sugar and calories in condiment’s. Pay attention and be honest with yourself everything you eat and drink. It *all* counts.

People who say counting calories is a form of ED don’t understand that counting calories is a genuine way to save your life in the long run. It’s only an ED if you make it one. I myself have a restrictive eating disorder but I still plan and cook my own healthy meals (I eat about 700-900 cals a day but I’m trying to recover, I enjoy food it’s just a fear of gaining weight type of situation) I went from 170lbs (I’m only 5 ft) down to 125lbs
@mwills778 ай бұрын
Honestly, one of the best tricks you can to do this at home is to write down everything that goes into your mouth, including water and snacks. Not only do you see what you eat, you become more conscious of what you’re eating because you have to write it down. You can also write down how you’re feeling to see if it is comfort or boredom.
@patrickwilliamson295 ай бұрын
Yeah but it won't work with people like this because they'll only write down what they want and leave out the stuff that matters ie all the snacks and soft drinks. People like her need to be shown they need to take accountability for their actions as if they actually did that in the first place, they wouldn't be in that situation in the first place

My mom had a coworker like that. Wouldn’t eat much in public, but one day saw her out at the grocery store. Saw her cart full of stuff like cheesecakes, baked goods, frozen pizzas. She had just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and still ate the same at home I guess. She also had a fb friend who would post health updates after a medical scare of some kind. She’s obese and the doctor said she and her husband need to lose weight. She would post pics of meals that wouldn’t even be enough to feed a rabbit. Everyone in the comments kept telling her to stop doing that because she’s just going to binge later on if all you eat for dinner is some carrots, a potato and asparagus. Well guess who couldn’t lose weight despite eating more veggies and less fats?

Obviously this is frustrating to see, but lately Ive developed a bit more sympathy for folks who overeat to this degree. A few months ago for a class assignment I tracked everything I ate right down to the squares of dark chocolate I like to snack on after a meal and realized I vastly underestimated how much I was consuming and barely even remembered eating those things, and the only reason they were written down was because I tracked them as I ate. I FINALLY brought up the eating disorder I struggle with in therapy, and its gotten much better, as now I no longer seem to have these "food blackouts" where I just eat and eat without noticing it. Obviously Im not saying these women or even myself were having selective amnesia (This lady in particular was clearly lying as I was to myself haha) just that some flavours of EDs *really* fuck with your perception of consumption

As a person with PCOS who struggled to lose weight my entire life, when I finally stopped lying to myself about what I was eating, the weight just started falling off. I don't even have to keep a food journal. I only LOOSELY count my calories and its enough to be in a deficit from what I was and I'm down 50lbs so far. I'm sure as I get closer to my goal weight I will have to get more strict on my caloric intake, but when you're really large, making even slight adjustments makes a big difference and that's how you can tell the "I really don't eat but I'm not losing weight" people who don't even have any metabolic issues are lying.

As someone who’s been in ED inpatient treatment: there are metabolic adaptations in extreme cases. Hypermetabolism is relatively common in re-feeding, especially with risk of re-feeding syndrome. In this setting patients are watched 24/7. The kitchen is often locked. Food is measured and tracked. Patients are watched while they eat. Even trash cans are checked. Bathroom doors remain open to stop purging. I’ve seen people who are on 4000 calorie meal plans who can’t gain weight or very slowly gain weight. This is usually temporary but still happens. On the other hand, hypo metabolism is also common in recovery. While I was inpatient I was on one of the lowest meal plans, and still didn’t finish everything. I gained 7 pounds in a couple weeks. And earlier in outpatient, gained 12 pounds in a few weeks. I’ve seen this happen with others. I have PCOS and at the time severe hypo-thyroid from my ED. I recently got a DEXA scan, and I’m currently relapsing. It said my BMR is 1050 calories (it was 1450 a few months ago) and I lost 5 pounds of lean body mass. So obviously, going from starving yourself to normal intake would cause rapid weight gain temporarily. Hypo-metabolism was measured in many contestants of the Biggest Loser years later. If someone has had extreme dieting or ED for a long time, they may want to get their BMR, lean mass, thyroid, etc checked, and work on recovering that before restricting further.

From experiance, they aren’t counting everything, drinking calories, and eating healthy can still be very high calorie. When you actually start to count EVERYTHING, it is a real eye opener. Even when you take a tiny bite of this or that, or tasting the food when cooking etc. It adds up QUICKLY! A single spoon of dressing or oil counts!

I've been bigger for a while, and using a caloric deficit is the best way to shed pounds for me. I've been told that that's not the best way to lose weight in weight loss forums, which is crazy to me. I eat a well-balanced diet with fewer calories than I burn, and I'm losing weight with no issue. Low carb, high protein, etc. are all a different way to achieve the same goal of a caloric deficit. I focus more on eating whole foods as much as possible and keeping the calories within a certain range daily. It's helped me lose over 30lbs, and I have no regrets! Counting calories is NOT necessarily an eating disorder. It is NECESSARY for someone to lose weight. I was anorexic so I took it to an extreme, but any obese person who is trying to lose weight, needs to be aware of the amount of calories etc. At least these 2 women faced it, unlike a lot of the obese people on KZbin that are on weight loss/fitness journeys and don't measure or count calories and never lose weight. The lack of accountability and lack of looking at reality in and of itself is a disease. You cannot out train a bad diet!!!
