When he stood up for his mother later, allowing the emotions of his human side to lead him - that was an awesome moment to witness. You could see the genuine appreciation from his mother, and he was right. She stood and faced all the prejudicial shit the Vulcans put her through and she suffered in silence for her son. That's real strength of character - and its so typical of a human mother (a loving one anyway)

Scalding hot is usually something people say to indicate something intolerably uncomfortable, not actually damaging. Something can easily be hot enough that most people can't stand to touch it, but not quite hot enough to actually damage skin. And frankly, most humans have a pretty low tolerance for it. The ones that claim the opposite most often and most loudly, are usually the ones with the lowest tolerance of all.

I love any Star Trek that has the Vulcans and their customs as the main subject of an episode and this one was a bit of an eye-opener. See if you happen to be Rh negative...a HELL of a lot of "Vulcan" traits seem to be ours...I have to wonder if WE are actually the templates for the Vulcans...it's quite crazy but there's some logic to it. When Amanda held that burning hot teapot...and suppressed the emotion and sensation...that is exactly something I would do...anyone else Rh Negative out there handle and suppress pain and emotion in this way or is it just me?.
@DoremiFasolatido1979Ай бұрын
Vulcan culture is largely a combination of Hebrew and Taoist traditions and aspects, given a bit of a twist as they're blended to make them seem more alien. Most of the Vulcan culture we see in Star Trek for the last 50 years, has been the creation of Leonard Nimoy himself. Roddenberry had very little on the table for them, at first, and once Nimoy finally got into the character, he pretty much built their entire civilization from scratch. Others contributed a great deal to smooth everything out and bring it to audiences, but the foundation of it and all the key aspects, are pretty much all Nimoy.

So why did they cast such a young actress as Spock's mom? Since she is human you can't say she just looks young because she is Vulcan. In reality there is only 11 years difference in age between Mia Kirshner and Ethan Peck. At least in TOS, Jane Wyatt was 20 years older than Leonard Nimoy so it was more believable.

@Deora-hn5bq8 ай бұрын
You have to consider that Mia Kirshner's first appearance as Amanda was in a flashback scene (which took place about a decade ago) in Discovery season 1. And Discovery had other flashback scenes where Spock was a little kid, so they had to take into account of her being that kid's mom. It's hard to imagine now, but when Kirshner was cast SNW wasn't even pitched and they didn't cast any actor as Spock.

@nicholasemjohnson473 ай бұрын
It's not that he doesn't know how to be a Vulcan. It's just that part of his knowledge and behavior came from instinct and emotional suppression, and the alterations removed those. Spock was used to the way he spoke because of his suppressions. But the techniques Vulcans use may not work for non-telepathic species like humans, so the alterations removed that and made him less flat. That's why he asked, "Do I really sound like that?" It was so natural, he never noticed it. It's like how even though we instinctively know how to walk and talk, certain disorders like Dementia can remove that knowledge and make us forget. Or how alcohol can remove our inhibitions and make us less controlled.
@nicholasemjohnson473 ай бұрын
@@michaelspath8499 The thing is, Spock was so used to controlling his emotions the Vulcan way, he never learned how to do it the human way. Since Vulcans are telepaths, the techniques they use to suppress their emotions may not work for non-telepaths like humans.
