We're looking forward to the possibility that Apple's going to announce their brand new ARM powered 2021 MacBook Pro on Monday. There's a lot of the excitement, and we think it's due in part to what the outgoing MacBook Pro generation was missing. So let's look back at the last five years of MacBook to understand why we're so eagerly anticipating the new one.

I got a 2017 MBP (no Touch Bar) a few years ago for college after using an older 2012 MBP my high school provided me. It was alright, and I didn't have the major issues with the Butterfly keyboard (thankfully), but it was starting to show its limitations a little bit, especially this year. I moved over to the M1 Air a few months ago, and I've been really happy with it. The battery life is pretty good considering what I do on it (mostly programming stuff, light gaming, and basic tasks), the keyboard is outstanding and feels much nicer than the Butterfly keyboard, and it performs like a champ. I'm not really bothered by the lack of ports, since it's rare for me to have to plug in multiple accessories at a time or use an SD Card (I still do need my dongle, though, for if and when I need to re-flash my Raspberry Pi's OS). It'll be interesting to see what the next-gen MBP will look like, but really happy with the M1 Air I have now.

I have a last gen 15" MacBook pro for work, that I got to replace my glow MacBook pro I was using. As noted the butterfly keyboard is nothing but a fancy version of those cheap blister pads you see out in the world, and the first thing I went to "fix" was the touch bar as I found accidentally hitting a "key" was way to easy in my normal use. That all said, converting to USB C was less of a hassle as I did not over rely my local ports in my work, and was for a while able to get down to a 1 cable dock solution for a bit, until I ran into issues with the reliability with the monitor output, leading me to add a separate power connection. It's nice. I would have 3 cables on the glo for what I do with 2 now

Usb C monitors, a camera that connected over usb c, usb c ssds, and eventually an egpu, the only usb a accessory I needed to retrofit was my sd card reader, which I owned because my old camera used CF cards. It’s been a great experience for me, but I’m sure it’s been incredibly frustrating for veteran users. The only thing I didn’t like is the touchbar, and wound up using an external keyboard the majority of the time.

I had a 2016 MBP as a work laptop and about two years in I finally got a key that started to doubletap, which really really sucks for programming and terminal use. Other than that I liked the feel of the keyboard to be honest. It was great for writing short bursts of text.

Same. Work gave everyone that did Dev/Ops a MacbookPro 2016, loved the keyboard. The one in the Macbook Air is too squishy for my taste.

it especially sucks when it's a key you use in a game

The problem is it was flawed from the start. One single failure on a key switch and you'll never know when the laptop would double type the key. On a professional (and expensive) laptop, that's a huge no-no.

And making it the ONLY option for an Apple laptop keyboard didn't help when the keyboard would be replaced with another faulty design. And Apple still has at least two class-action lawsuits to face in the U.S. alone because of those keyboards (and rightfully so).

I am still rocking the 2012 MacBook Pro with an optical drive! I swapped the HDD for an SSD a few years ago (as this was one of the last models to allow for user-based upgrades). Ever since, it feels like a new computer. I will likely drive this one till it dies, then upgrade to an M1X (or whatever they call it) 16".

I have a mid 2018 15’ MacBook Pro, keyboard has been fine, the only two things i wish were different were the hot as hell and inefficient cpu… sucks when editing large RAW photos, and no sd card reader. Fix those and the next one will be on my radar. I’ve already made the jump to usb C, so I’m not hurting there. Also my Mac before the 2018 was a late 2013 MacBook Air.

Own a 2014 MBP and will not replace it unless the new one has some features coming back. In addition I have a M1 macMini and love this little beast. So performance and temperature should be a problem on a new MBP but worry about connectivity (ports) and reliability (keyboard).

There I am, a new Mac user with his MBP 13" M1 and touchbar, and I love it. Lack of ports, yes, but the rest is perfect for me.

I bought my first MacBook Pro in 2018 with the touch bar. I have not really had a issue. Perhaps it’s because I did not come from the previous Mac. My complaint has been around the battery warnings only a couple of years after usage. I use my Mac for app development and Ableton live.

I just sent the 2017 macbook pro for keyboard replacement before their free replacement program ends in November. If they introduced another butterfly keyboard for these new ones, I ain’t touching it.

Got the 2019 MBP as a work laptop and it's fine, but it definitely gets toasty with the i9.... I don't even try to use it on my lap cuz i don't want to get burned!

Ive never had any problems with the butterfly keyboard on my 2017 macbook pro. Ive eaten near it, had cats shed near it, took out dandruff near it, still works fine 3 years later.

I got the M1 pro coming from the mid 2015 15" retina and i must say i've been loving this little guy. I refused to upgrade up until this point because I knew all of the IO I'd be loosing.
