Sadly My physician won't write a prescription for a CGM for me. I asked her because I am prediabetic. She said you have to be referred to an endocrinologist and they have to decide if you need one. We all need one! They don't want preventative care. You have to wait till you are a full blown diabetic. CRAZY! You might want to mention in video a prescription is necessary.

One issue with the message - high energy exercise is no good for everyone’s metabolism. People with high cortisol or hypothyroidism generally see increased fat retention with extreme exercising. The stress of high intensity can cause sharp cortisol spikes which increase insulin resistance and fat retention.

In Australia anyone can buy a CGM and sensor online, no script etc needed. The scanner is about $100 but it's free (I believe) if you just use the app on your phone. A sensor is $100 for 14 days. The brand is Libre. Another reason to be grateful to be Australian :)
@dorsetboronia6744 Жыл бұрын
In Australia it is only heavily subsidised by Medicare for type 1 diabetics. about $20. twice a month. For type 2 diabetics it is not approved or subsidised in Australia. However if suggested by your GP and covered by a letter from them, it can be acquired from Abbott Laboratories. $AU 110. Per sensor. Lasts 14 days. So. $AU $220. Per month. Is this prohibitive. Yes for majority. I don’t know what you mean “free by using the phone app”. If no sensor - then the app cannot be used??? Of course the app is free…..but the sensor free…. 2 years ago I decided to chart my numbers using a simple finger stick kit for about $30. First was to check my fasting blood sugar as soon as I woke up. Then I checked it again at noon while still fasting. That established my lowest or baseline. I was about 30 pounds overweight after a back injury and depression eating. Once I got out of the rut I couldn't shake the weight despite daily exercise of up to an hour and a fairly healthy diet where I dont consume alcohol nor eat much fried food. Just the usual chicken and fish. The best I did counting calories (portion control) and increasing my exercise was 5 pounds. Then i decided to adjust my diet to stay at my fasting blood sugar as long as possible during daylight hours. What was interesting was that I completely dispensed with exercise and portion control and calorie counting. I wanted to make it the diet that would work for the world's laziest man who likes to eat. 😅 So in the morning I would make this giant breakfast of an enormous omelet with extra egg whites added to the cracked free range egg. I added grilled diced chicken. Two fist fulls of pre chopped broccoli. And cheese that wasnt overly processed. I was a fan of Buffala back when it was still cheap. I would season generously with garlic, onion, cumin, cilantro and herbs d'province. I would keep a bowl of Bush's seasoned black beans mixed with organic lentins (with more seasoning, heavy on the cumin and smoked paprika). And one small portion of fruit (at least 100 mcg of Vitamin C). For lunch another big portion meal of wild fish or more chicken, whatever beans you're in to, a whole avocado and air fryer baked vegetables like brussel sprouts rolled in soy sauce, garlic powder, dijon mustard and keto syrup. The point of these two meals is to get 70% of your protein in by 2pm when you are the most alert. Remembering I did zero exercise to mirror the tendencies of the average man. I'd have another small portion of fruit usually wild blueberries with whipped cream and these keto muffins or pancakes made from almond flour, chocolate humus, organic peanut butter. You get the point. Once a week I'd an actual wheat or barley based flour like pizza or sandwich. The blood sugar readings were done 30 minutes after a meal. And once an hour thereafter until I was back at the fasting sugar. Depending on what I ate I started to see which foods lingered the longest and which returned my blood sugar back to the fasting level within 2 hours or less. There wasnt much variation for me among low carb foods. Also I'd check blood sugar after a precisely 1 mile walk immediately after a meal at a walking pace necessary to raise my heart rate slightly. Smart watch or activity bracelet very useful here. The blood sugar spike was always lower after a walk than just plopping down on the sofa after a meal. If I was on the run I'd eat and then plan my shopping trip right after to walk down the blood sugar spike. Never the meal after the shopping. On the go meals were often grilled chicken strips, a big bottle of Perrier or Pellegrino and beans if they had it. Or string cheese which are always in the fridge at quick convenience stores or gas stations. And a bag of nuts. Also helpful before you leave the house eat a spoonful of organic peanut butter and a shot of whipped cream washed down with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Takes 2 seconds but keeps the blood sugar drop that makes you hangry and prone to cheat. The bottom line conclusion was if I kept blood sugar within 20% of my fasting blood sugar for at least 10 waking hours by bedtime my metabolism would make the "switch" to fat burning while I slept. The first weeked I lost 3 pounds. Then 1 pound per week... every week. It was so easy in that I was eating way more volume and hadn't done a lick of exercise. And my taste buds started changing in that a little bit of something sweet tasted very sweet. I also cut out all the artificial sugars and diet drinks which I think were spiking my blood sugar. So sparkling waters lemon and lime juice and a small squirt of those Stevia based flavor drink drops like Stur. 6 month update: i have completely reversed my elevated liver enzymes to within the reference range. my internist calculated that my cirosis risk was reduced to below one percent. my total cholesterol is below 200. they still put me on a low dose statin and it further reduced my score to 130. i'm calling this the half plate rule. half the pan you cook or plate you prepare should be vegetables. lean on broccoli or cauliflower as the base, add some onions red or white or both, generous garlic, and yellow peppers which have the highest vitamin c levels of any widely available plant. the other half should be a couple of spoons of starch like rice or potatoes if it scratches that itch for a carb craving. increase your legumes and lentils/pulses bit by bit until you can comfortably tolerate a generous serving of this protein source and reduce your animal protein source. Saturdated fats are a contributor to metabolic syndrome and insulin ressistance in certain people much like refined carbs and refined sugars. Fiber be it vegetables or beans should be doing the heavy lifting to feed your gut bacteria and keep your insulin levels as static as possible. unless you have thyroid condition this should improve your bloodwork across the board in a matter of months. And obviously avoid alcohol and limit to just special ocassions.

@Allison Jones more like low carb. Keto is essentially zero carb such that you suppress your blood sugar to an unusually low number and keep it ther. That's nearly impossible for most people. @Renee Keller I forget his name but there's a nutrition expert who is often interviewed about protein specifically. A controversial topic. He said he didn't see any benefits for intermittent fasting in older people for precisely the reason you stated. Diminished absorption of nutrients as we age requires eating more quantities. Which is counter intuitive. Basically young people can extract everything they need from smaller portions and need much less protein. Whereas the older we get the more we need to eat. He did however see a huge benefit to time restricted eating where you stop eating after Sundown. I don't think most people understand the difference in the two. Nor the importance of eating with the circadian rhythmic pattern.

Extraordinary video. Thank you... I've been waiting for something like this for a long time to be able to see how a non-diabetic organism reacts to various food stimuli and physical effort... It's just that the video is not complete... I mean, it would be good to make another video with something that matters and which, probably, many people do... He he... it would mean making a small sacrifice... like whether you eat two cakes or full chocolate and drink a glass of juice like Pepsi or Cola with sugar... and also combine it with a physical effort... Then we would really be interested in how it would work and how the concentration of sugar in the blood would fluctuate and how much the blood sugar would increase in a normal person if he ate such sweets. Again... Thank you!

Dr. Becky, thank you for the information. It’s a wonderful idea but, I know for me at least, it’s unrealistic. My husband and I are retired and live on a small income. Paying $199 a year for membership and $199 a month is a bit steep. I averaged it out per month and it’s about $215 a month. For my husband and I that’s a car payment. Sorry, I can’t justify the cost. I’m on your 40 Day program and I’ll have to just work with that and the Cronometer. I am a diabetic on insulin but I don’t use it 3 or more times in a day, just once. So insurance and Medicare are out. I’m a vet and can’t get through them, either. I’ll just have do without. Thanks, though.

Think a CGM is useful if you’re serious about your health and plan to use if for a set period of time to gather information. I used a different brand in the UK, much more expensive on a monthly basis and did it for an 8 week period. Confirmed caffeine sends my blood sugar skyward and then crashes. I learned that I sometimes go hypoglycaemic overnight and that I didn’t know, it tied in with nights when I was restless and felt awful. Also when I felt I needed a snack before bed. So those times i didn’t deny myself and made sure i had something long lasting. I can’t exercise because of structural issues and M.E. so rely on common sense eating. Already knew through home blood testing that my HbA1c test was great and stable across 2 yrs. have a look and see what other CGMs might be available to you.

Any CGM requires a prescription because it is considered a medical device. I'm an RN and was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic (Hgb A1c was 5.7). My doctor e-scribed my RX for the CGM to my pharmacy and I pay $19 every 2 weeks for the CGM sensor (they last 14 days and then you take the old one off and apply a new one). I use my flexible spending account to pay for it and love the CGM. I have an app that shows real time glucose monitoring and it was an eye opener to me. When I searched online about Levels, they too require a prescription but "partner with physicians from an independent network" to determine if the CGM would benefit you. I think the pricing for Levels is ludacris, but if you have really deep pockets then go for it.
@JustLearning Жыл бұрын
My A1C was 6.0 and my insurance will not cover the cost of the CGM because they feel my diabetes in under control! It would still be useful to have a CGM to monitor my blood sugar. By the way, still do a finger prick to see how accurate the CGM is. I have had relative use the CGM and found that the readings were 20-30 points lower than the finger prick! I would trust the finger prick over the CGM.
@anitastokar98 Жыл бұрын
@@JustLearning If blood sugar levels are stable, the CGM should be fairly accurate (no more than approximately 0-9% off from the finger stick). If blood sugar levels are rising or falling rapidly, then the CGM may be more than 9% off as the interstitial fluid that the CGM is reading is about 10 minutes of time behind the finger stick reading of actual blood.
@JustLearning Жыл бұрын
@@anitastokar98 Thanks for your thoughtful reply Anita. My experience has that even given the 10 minute lag time between the CGM and the finger stick test, the CGM never came near the finger stick reading no matter how much time you allowed for it to catch up. And the reading were always off by a different amount. The the difference between the two reading were always the same, that could still be useful. If the CGM reading was always 30 units behind, then I would just add 30 to the reading and I know they would match the finger stick reading. I trust the finger stick readings over the CGM readings. I have 3 finger stick meters and they are always exactly or near exactly the same to one another. I think CGM will eventually be made accurate, but right now they are not ready for prime time. Thanks again!
@anitastokar98 Жыл бұрын
@@JustLearning Sorry they aren't accurate for you. Most of the time my CGM has been between 0 and 5 units off of my blood glucose meter. The first 12 hours of my CGM, I don't even start the sensor as it can be 70 points off. I put my sensor on and start it 12 hours later which takes away the inaccuracy. Good luck. Have you ever thought about using the Eversense CGM that is implanted under skin? Maybe that would be an option for you. I feel badly that you have to do finger sticks.

Hi Sara, your first sentence "it is considered a medical device" My solution is don't buy a medical device. Dr. Becky advised us to watch how soon our blood sugar goes up after we have eaten, how long it stayed high and lastly how quickly it returned to more normal. I spent less than 50 Canadian dollars to purchase a digital watch from China. My watch can display my blood sugar levels once every five minutes. At the end of the day I look over a graph on my cell phone and determine the time it takes to go high, the duration it stays around that high value and the time it comes back to normal. For $50 I am well pleased. I was diagnosed about 25 years ago and all those years I stuck needles into my finger but since purchasing this watch I am able to understand what is happening to my body. Just listen to Dr. Becky and do not depend on getting a prescription or reimbursement from the insurance company. In January I celebrated my 83 birthday. Good health to all. By the way my watch also shows my ECG.

As a former pre diabetic, it would be very informative to continue monitoring my metabolism with a CGM. However, until they are not too many strings attached, I will wait. I can afford a few months of monitoring; once in a while, but I do not have any use for a membership. I am still eating as if I am still pre diabetic and following my changes like increased activity. Since I am not diabetic, I cannot get a prescription for a Free Style either, even if I pay out of pocket. I wonder, why is our healthcare system so backwards. I know, it pays more to the healthcare system and big pharma to let disease to take over than to stop it on time. Thanks for the information you provide to all of us mere mortals.

I am T2D with BG under control with diet, exercise, Ozempic and NO ALCOHOL. Current A1C is 5.5. My wake up or fasting number is 80-95. I use a CGM and have been able to eliminate foods that cause not just a spike in BG numbers but a lingering higher level the next day or even a few days. I really didn’t learn anything new but rather just confirmed what I suspected all along. Specifically certain food choices raise BG levels or those spikes to avoid. Sourdough bread grilled cheese sandwich with a side of potato chips. Meatballs pasta in tomato sauce. 2 scoops of ice cream (no added sugar). Most fruits especially pineapple. With the CGM it’s akin to being over the ocean piloting a plane with not enough fuel due to a leak to make it to land. As the pilot you order the crew to start tossing out of the plane anything not nailed down to save on fuel have a chance to make it to land. That’s what the CGM does. It identify foods that you need to toss out to make it to your safe BG level destination. Another important fact: As long as i work out ( i bike walk and lift in 2-3 separate sessions totaling 10,000 steps plus weights or about 3 hours total daily 6 days a week) I can eat what I desire within reason because my BG drops 20-50 points during my work out. So I eat foods pre-workout that normally I shouldn’t indulge because my body with the exercise uses it up as fuel without the spike. Best diet to control BG numbers without spikes? Raw vegan 5 days a week with fermented seed cheeses some LG fruits like berries kiwi. Weekends eat what you want just portion control and monitor with your CGM accordingly. Good luck.

So several years ago after some blood tests, I got a call from the nurse in my doctor's office telling me that my A1c was high. I asked her what recommendations they had for me and the response was something along the lines of "Nothing, we just thought you should know." Had I been satisfied with that answer, I'm sure I'd be a Type 2 Diabetic today. Instead, I purchased a blood glucose monitor out-of-pocket and started tracking my blood glucose. It would have been easier with a CGM, but by being willing to enduring many, many finger sticks, I have extensive knowledge about how my body reacts to different foods. For example, I knew that at one point, I could eat half a cup of chili without issue, but 3/4 cup serving would cause a blood glucose spike. So for those of you lamenting that you can't get a prescription for the CGM, just know that you can still get really solid information from a standard monitor.

It would be cheaper for the government to fund a CGM for those who keep their readings in check (who would otherwise struggle) than hospital admissions, cutting limbs, pacemakers, replacing kidneys etc. Natural attrition would mean fewer people to treat for these costly conditions at a later stage.
@app103 Жыл бұрын
The healthcare industry thrives in an environment where everyone is chronically sick with something. Cures and prevention are not really their goal. Doctors, hospitals, and drug manufacturers don't make their profits from healthy people that only need an annual checkup. They need you to be sick enough to bill every month, but not so sick that their money making machine (YOU) dies.

I find this super interesting, I’m nervous about the cost though. How long does a CGM last and how much are they each time?
@dwightl5863 Жыл бұрын
The Dexcom G6 sensor lasts for 10 days. The transmitter that attaches to the sensor lasts 3 months. When changing the sensor after the 10 days the transmitter is taken off the expired sensor and it inserted into the new sensor. I can't address the cost. I'm a type 1 diabetic and on Medicare so the CGM's are at no extra cost for me. The issue I have with "non-diabetics" using these sensors is the possibility that sensors will not be available for those of us that literally rely on them to stay in reasonable control of our disease. Using a CGM as "a toy" to see that a salad doesn't have much affect on one's glucose (usually), to seeing a spike whereas eating pasta or piece of pie should be on the obvious side of logic. IMHO

I found out, that physical activities I loathe (really LOATHE) result in - to me - extreme spikes in blood sugar, while the ones I love lead to a signidicant reduction of my blood sugar. I work out in a fasted state, too. Have been wearing a CGSM for over 3 months, so data is valid ;) Mountain climbing - which I loathe - leads to an immediate spike up to 150 mg/dl, coming from the low 70ies (that's normal to me in a fasted state) Ice water swimming or swimming in general leads to a drop in my blood sugar down to the higher 50ies. Mind that I seem to thrive under low blood sugars, so perhaps add 10 to 20 mg /dl to my numbers. for reference Anyone else experienced that, that the blood sugar rises when doing activities one doesn't like and going down with activities one does like? My husband experienced the same. Mountain climbing: Blood sugar dropped (he loves it, ain't I a lucky girl?), swimming; went up up up (he hates it).

A guess, with heavy exercise the need to increase blood sugar is a normal response especially if fasted, to supply energy? My Ketone urine levels as detected drop to very low after exercise which is counter intuitive, as after an hour's exercise I am burning fat and generating ketones..... I assume I am burning them up not peeing them out lol. My particular concern would be if the blood glucose does not return to a Normal low resting level. It's a bit like the criticism that blood lipids increase on a ketogenic diet, of course they do, you are transporting fats to burn instead of sugars.

Nope. Annual cost for using the app AND getting monitors you'll need for a year is about $2600.

It costs $199 per year for the app, also, $199 per month for the monitor! Crazy!

I am not diabetic but have reactive hypoglycemia. Was diagnosed about 50 years ago and have struggled with the diet for years. Since hearing of this device, I wonder if it would help me. Lately my body seems to be changing and I could use help.

Thank you for the useful video. I am not a diabetic and I just received my CGM today. I will be treating it as an experiment because I can see that my A1C levels have been rising over time and I want to see which foods are causing that. The levels monitor looks just like a Dexcom G6.
