I post new dating advice for women every Sunday.

Here’s a question - how do you know when you’re ready to commit to a relationship?
It’s easy to for us to stereotype and say that men are the only ones who struggle with this problem, but women do, too.
A (female) reader this week asks, “How do I tell a guy I’m not ready to get serious just yet?”
If you want to know exactly what to say to keep him interested but still get the message across that you need more time, you’ll want to see this...

To be honest, i don't think that anyone should wait around and put his Life on Pause for anyone else. I consider my self as a wonderful opportunity.. if the person is not in, it's her loss, I move on ..

I used to believe "if it's the right person it's always the right time" but honestly that is something a person can believe in when everything's lined up for them... it isn't always reality. I ended a 10 year relationship last week, and there is a _lovely_ guy who I've had a crush on (yes, before the breakup, it's always complicated) and he wants more with me but after 10 years ending in emotional suffocation I can't think of anything worse than tethering my future to anyone else, even if this guy is literally perfect to me. It's not always that simple. I wish it was.

To the writer of the letter: I was in a similar situation a couple years ago. I was interested in a guy who i became friends with and it was obvious that he wanted to make things more serious and romantic between us and I wasn't sure if I was "ready" to take that next step. I knew that if I didn't grow our relationship, I would lose what we had. I knew that if I started a relationship with him, there was no going back and we would either be together or break up after x number of months and we would no longer be in a position to stay close friends. I felt like I wasn't in a position at the time to be in a committed relationship. I knew it was a BIG risk, but I decided to take that risk because I never wanted to wonder what we could have been. Three years later I am still with him and we are soooo happy together. I'm so thankful that I took a leap of faith and I am in a strong, committed relationship. I felt like it wasn't the right time in my life, but the right guy will stick by you regardless. I still feel like my life is a crazy mess right now and I'm still figuring things out, but the time will pass anyways, and that was three years I could've wasted waiting for my life to be in order. Hope this helps :)

I was going out with a guy that did this "I'm not ready to be in a relationship" to me. We had started flirting and all ever since we met, all summer long, and went out had fun later, had serious conversations about his past (which was very troubling for him), we bonded, I was there for him, without ever talking about where we were or what we were. And in October he suddenly says "I need to be on my own, because I don't know how not to be in a relationship with someone, and sooner or later I'm gonna hurt you because of this, because I'm not good when I'm alone and I need to learn to be". And we were still friends a month later, I respected his choice. But when he texted me that he wanted me back and all that shit I believed him because I believed in him, and he just slept with me and then he was like "no, I meant I wanted to have sex with you this one time". Needless to say there was a huge load of swearing afterwards and fighting for a few days. And of course we haven't talked since. IF YOU ARE NOT READY TO BE WITH SOMEONE DON'T GIVE THEM HOPES FOR SOMETHING, JUST COPE WITH YOURSELF FIRST. DON'T START DATING THEM IF YOU'RE JUST GONNA BREAK THEM AFTER A WHILE. PS: sorry Matthew, I love your channel, it gives me hope in relationships

I have had this situation recently. It's not that I don't want a relationship exactly, it's more that my life at the moment doesn't give me enough time to have a mutually fulfilling relationship. Saying no out of respect for the other person is really hard to do. But it's selfless. I do believe that you make time for the things you prioritise. Right now , in all honesty, I prioritise work over a relationship so it would not be fair for me to seriously date

Maybe it’s the way I was taught and raised but I always felt like I had to already be the “best version” of myself before starting or pursuing a relationship. Like I had to be “mature enough”, have perfect relationships with my family, be the best Daughter, Friend, student, and granddaughter before I’m defined “ready” for a relationship. Yes it’s good to be all that but as I grow older, I realised that there is never a time when one is “mature enough” for a relationship. People go through hardships only to grow stronger and better. Sometimes people find themselves becoming a better person being in the relationship and to the people around them. If everyone had to be perfect before being ready for a relationship, then no one will ever be ready. But of course there are relationships whereby one become a worse person but I believe that even through that experience, and after that relationship eventually fails and ends, and you start to see the consequences. That’s the start of growth too. There’s never a defined time when you are ready for a relationship. If it comes it comes. If it ends it ends. What matters is how you grow with it and how you work with it. Relationship is not heaven it’s not a reward, it’s hard work it’s a journey.

You can grow in your relationship with your partner. Relationship is never an excuse for our laziness. Also this guy can help this girl through her problems emotionally. Why people think they should be their best before finding the one? perhaps they think they will have better options than now.

@@mb.khatibi6444 true but for some people they rather do the work themselves than leading the other person on. I had the same thing happened to me in my last relationship. I was a mess (low self esteem, depression, anxiety, etc) and as much as he was willingly to be there for me, I wasn't ready to let anyone in. I kept pushing him away. I feel most people want to be their best for whoever accepts them as they are rather than putting them through all that pressure.

For me, when I say I'm not ready or the time isn't right for a relationship, it turns out that I'm just not that into him. He isn't quite right for me and I sense that and don't "feel" ready or I'm hesitant. But really, that guy that is wanting more just doesn't do it for me.

Vanessa Barton what you just said is brilliant. as a guy, I want to thank you for being honest about what that phrase really means. so many guys (and girls) don't really get it. (although I think it's better if you just tell the guy, "I'm sorry, but I'm just not interested". that way he wont be thinking that you will change your mind)
@Flutterby1388

raleighman3000 While most of the time being upfront and honest, straight to the point etc....can be helpful, still, not all guys will get even that. Lol. I have told guys that I'm not into them in that way, that I only see them as a friend and nothing more and never will and they still have seemed to "hang on" to hope. That may seem sweet if you secretly do like the guy. However, if you really meant what you said to him the fact that he keeps holding on is just annoying. So then I have to pull away and distance myself because they aren't respecting the boundary I tried to set. Sometimes when people can't see or realize their value it can blind them to reality I guess and causes them to settle for something that isn't what they truly want or deserve. If that makes sense. 😜 Sad really. But I've been there. And you can't make someone "get it".

"i'm not ready for a relationship" = I just got out of a bad relationship and i'm working on myself to heal, grow and be a better person for the next human being. It's not you, it's truly ME. Sometimes we're not ready and need time for ourselves to regroup or other times just like being alone and like where our lives are headed. It doesn't mean we don't value and respect and or like the person, we just need time to get ourselves figured out first. The way I see it is, i rather be ready to trust that part of myself again to give myself to someone else.

I like this style of video. I do want to add to the comments you made; I think the question writer is assuming the guy wants a relationship. Some people don't move that quickly and just want one date to see if they would like a second or third date or eventually a relationship. I've made this mistake myself many times on the past; assuming too much, looking too far ahead. The best thing in any case is to slow it down, be buddies, have a good time and see if something develops. Allow things to happen naturally. Matt, you are right..if its right...then it won't matter if there is a lot going on in one's life. Matthew, that shirt is gorgeous.

The first thing she said in her email is; "she is not ready for a relationship" so that is the answer she should give to the guy if/when he asks her out. First rule of dating; listen to what people say and don't spend time trying to read between the lines that aren't there. If someone says they are not ready...walk in the opposite direction. Great video Matthew and you look amazing in that shirt! The color is GREAT!

What I understand from this girl's issue is, maybe she's just been through a hurtful breakup or has been heartbroken in some way and needs time to get over this other person before starting a new relationship. She probably thinks this new person is nice and likes him too, but still needs time. If this is the case, it sure is a tricky situation, and I don't think it's as black and white as Matthew makes it out to be...

I got the vibe too that this wasn't as black and white as Matthew was making it out to be. The first bit of advice I wanted to tell him, "Pause a moment!" Then Jameson spoke up and was like, "Yes!"

Anna Cowan No, it really is. In the movie, Why Did I Get Married" do you think Jill . Scott's character wanted to start over after being dumped by her husband and betrayed by her best friend? Finding and experiencing true love is not for the weak. It's simple but it's not easy. If you over-think it, your blessing could walk right out of your life.

Anna Cowan from the guys’ perspective it is. Unless she explains all that the only thing he’ll hear is a no. Even after the explanation, it’s still a no, though he might decide to wait for her, it’s not his responsibility to do so.

I think you can tell someone you're not ready for a relationship yet, you can hang out together, if the other person is okay and as well not in a rush to be in a relationship, nothing's wrong. But if the guy wants one, so she has to let him go and try to focus on her until she's ready. Lying or playing won't help, it'll only make things worse.

I am going to have to disagree with you about some of this ( the needing time before being able to do a relationship). Life happens when it happens, and is it not an adult responsibility to prioritize their life for someone they want a serious relationship with? Crappy periods of time come and go throughout the rest of anyone's life. Being able to cope with the crappy times and a relationship is necessary, but if they are incapable, no one should wait around. If they find each other down the road later, that is great. But it is unfair for someone to wait around for something they can't be sure will end soon. My thought at least. I'd be happy to hear other viewpoints :) Edit: I want to be clear that I do not disagree with everything in this video. I think Matt makes valid points throughout. I just see one part of the video from a different perspective. I appreciate the conversations taking place :)

if 2 people are interested in each other, they should get to know each other; if you don't feel like it, then it means you're not that interested. (my opinion)

I actually had a similar experience a few years ago and handled it almost exactly how Matt suggested in this video. I'm generally a very open person and I don't like to bs people (especially if one considers how much I hate that done to me). In my situation I had quite a lot of heavy things I was dealing with. At the same time I was figuring out that I just didn't have romantic feelings for him. I knew that, even if I did have those feelings for him, with the level of trauma and baggage I was going through at the time it just wasn't fair to drag him into it no matter how supportive and wonderful he was. Furthermore, having enough developing respect for and knowledge of myself, it wouldn't have been fair to me to keep the relationship going. Life carries on no matter what. Time carries on for us all. But that makes it all the more essential to let yourself have those healing periods of solitude to really get to know who you are and what you want. During periods of great stress and trauma people tend to make impulsive decisions and cling to things that aren't likely in their best interest rather than face and overcome whatever issues might be going on. No healthy relationship can come out of that. Neither with the Self or another person.
@kaylaempson5788
@kaylaempson5788 7 жыл бұрын
Donnarynn Oakenshield I really appreciate your comment and how it shows another perspective. However, I believe what I have said is meant more in relation to a different situation. I can understand that certain traumas can rip apart relationships regardless of how hard each partner may try. I can understand that it can take time figuring out how you feel to make the decision to leave a partner. What I am arguing is how tricky and blanketing a statement it can be to not engage fully in the relationship and leave another hanging, waiting around because that person is going through some "craziness" in their life. I think there is a great deal of validity to that idea because somethings are too much for any relationship to start off on (in which you need to let the person go); however, I worry about others who are quickly non-committal using this as an excuse to not commit or invest in their relationships, then leaving said partner waiting around for a few months investing their patience to ultimately be rejected. I know I have my own biases towards this issue just as anyone has a bias toward any of their own opinions, and again, I appreciate your perspective to help me look at things differently.
@donnarynn
@donnarynn 7 жыл бұрын
+Kayla Empson Oh I completely agree. It's never right to leave a person hanging or waiting. It's not fair to them and it's selfish to ask. If you're not ready for a serious or "official" relationship or if you don't know how much you like the person then you should be open about that and your intentions. As in most cases and walks of life, communication is key.

"Not ready for a relationship" in the context of dating someone means one or more of three things: 1) not with you, 2) I want to see you but I also want to sleep with other people without you getting mad, 3) I'm immature and never really going to be ready for a relationship. Basically, for whatever reason they want the benefits you offer without having to really give anything back because it's...not a "relationship." Except it is actually a type of relationship (remember, you have a relationship with everyone in your life including friends, family, and coworkers), just not one that's satisfying for both people. I'm saying this as someone who's been on both the giving and receiving end of this behavior. Bottom line: Don't wait around for someone who "isn't ready for a relationship" if you are ready.
