Sitting here in Tampa with little money to leave, and taking care of a veteran who cant be moved. BUT were hunkered down with lots of supplies, gas, and a generator. Hope we make it through. We cut our Disney trip short. Just got home early this morning. I was telling my mom she experienced back to back hurricanes as a kid in Connecticut. The flooding was unimaginable then. NC mountains were demolished here, I can’t imagine going through another storm this soon.

If you have freezer space fill up jugs, bowls, containers with drinkable water. It will keep your freezer cold longer and as it defrost if you need water to drink it is there.

If you leave you place unattended, put a coin on top of a frozen cup of water. When you come back, you will have an indicator of how long the power was out.

I would make that easier and do what I do all summer, take a sip off a water bottle & pop them in the freezer. That way they have room to expand. I do that so my water stays cold, with a frozen center (esp good with Sports bottles). But for a storm, it is like having easy ice packs, but drinkable!

IE for my suggestion, if water bottles start out frozen solid, you can both use them to keep food frozen/cold AND as a safe drinking water supply. The OP shared a standard trick if you leave you home and may not be sure how long power was out for. It remains a solid idea for those those sheltering with others during a storm. You don't want to come home and try to guess if you food is still safe!

Having gone through a Cat 5 in Panama City Fl with Hurricane Michael, you really should consider evacuating. The devastation that comes with a Cat 5 is unbelievable. Prepare for no food, gas, cell service, power for at least 2 weeks. Praying for yall!!

Couple of tips for you from someone who has been through so many hurricanes. Fill the bathtub is a good one for flushing the toilet. Also fill any pitchers or containers you can with drinkable water for drinking and cooking if needed. One thing many people don't realize is that your garage door(s) have locking latches on the side to lock them down to prevent strong winds from lifting the door. You may want to engage those and remind everyone in your house to not press the open button on the garage door while they are engaged. You may also pull the cord on the safety latch connecting the garage lift to the door to help prevent accidental button pressing. Bring all items that may pose a flight risk from outside in the garage or strap down to prevent unwanted projectiles flying around. And one last tip, during the heavy winds, stay away from the windows. While you may have taken care of loose articles outside, doesn't mean others have. Stay safe!!! We are in Ocala, so hopefully not too much here, but I will see you on the flip side.

We stayed at Shades of Green during Ian…we the greens on the golf course flooded to where you could go swimming! It was crazy! The banging all night during Ian’s impact was crazy! And it came through Orlando directly. Never will forget it. But the parks were dead the next day! Plus beautiful weather! Stay safe Dev!

@@Jillousa it’s track, size, timing in the season, and power jump are all unusual. On a personal feel scale our migratory chimney swifts have left 3 weeks early, rising waters in the back swamp have brought the wild turkeys up already and there is water pooling in the front field. All days before expected, especially for a west to east moving storm. My storm tingles are fully on.

I understand how you feel. I was sheltered in Cabana Bay in September 2022 and Ian was my first hurricane. The airport closed the day(a Wednesday)I was supposed to fly out, but Cabana Bay let me stay in my room for two more nights. I've been through tornadoes in Chicago, but that experience was crazy. We just got back from staying at Universal Royal Pacific last night. We were thinking about sticking it out but the guy driving the ferry to the parks on Sunday said it would be best to evacuate. A small tip from WESTERN NC if you need to and have access from your dryer to the outside by way of the vent you can unplug your dryer and plug the generator into that plug ( but turn of the main breaker first) and depending on what wattage the generator is it will run stuff in the house. Just trying to help stay safe and keep the streams rolling

Fill zip lock bags with water and freeze them. This will help keep things cold. Fill any coolers with water as well. We lived there for Irma and was out of power for a week, luckily I worked for Disney and they gave a really discounted room for the week so we had power and they let us bring our animals, even though the resort didn’t allow them. Also if you can’t get sand bags get dirt in bags and use that. Stay safe!

I've only ever been hurricane adjacent; and it just so happened to be during my first ever visit to Disney World. It was during Hurricane ANDREW's attack on Florida. We had rented a car for the trip & while leaving WDW at park close, the traffic was insane. At first we thought it was just Disney traffic, and were shocked the park could have been THAT busy; but, when we turned on the radio, we figured out it was evacuees escaping the storm. I felt so bad for everyone trapped in that storm. We did worry that we might not be able to fly home, but we lucked out. I pray for everyone down south.

Southwest Floridian here. It’s gonna hit us hard, my town just got out of the cone of the storm’s path so relived about that. But the storm surge is gonna be the thing that hits hard like Ian and Irma did. I recently left my college to head home since I go to USF Tampa and immediately when the storm was announced to be a cat 4 hurricane(before cat 5), the university closed and ordered all of us to head home so left on Saturday with my best friend (had to drive to Gainesville tho to pick up my cousin at UF). So hopefully everyone that will be impacted by Milton is safe when it makes landfall on Wednesday(hopefully it weakens to a cat 3 or lower hurricane)

I live on the outskirts of Tampa away from the water and not in an evacuation zone. Also my area has underground power lines. Keep in mind yes it’s a category 5 but it’s a small storm which means it can weaken quickly when it goes through wind shears. Also the intense winds in this storm are only like a 10 mile radius given how small it is.

Cook as much of the food in your freezer then refreeze it. If you lose the power the food will last longer and you will have food to eat withour having to use as much fuel to cook it. Also flashlights and batteries!!!! They are so useful and you won't want to use valuable generator juice on lighting. Store more water than you think you will need. You always need more than you think. Also, masking tape. If you tape criss crosses across your windows it reduces shattering. Stay Safe!!!! I’m here in Texas when we got hit with hurricane Burrell we went for almost a week with no electricity, but I’m also a Camping fanatic. I’ve learned over the years get gallon jugs of water. Put them in your freezer ice packs put them in your freezer. it will help the food in the freezer. Stay cold longer, if you have Camping lanterns, make sure you have plenty of batteries you have a camping stove you can still continue to cook if you need any other helpful hints please just let me know.
