As a very vocal feminist who reads a lot of feminist lit, I rolled my eyes when I saw this title and braced to write a lengthy comment. I literally watch Fantano BECAUSE he actually treats female artists with equal respect and doesn't regurgitate misogynistic garbage. If anyone was going to get pissed at a dude for misogyny, trust me, I'd be first in line. But Fantano said pretty much exactly what I would have said, proving he has a nuanced understanding of the dynamics at play here - far, far more than these young girls do. I'd love to imagine these girls will see this video, actually listen to what he's saying, and admit that they are the ones that have a lot to learn because stan/fandom and internet culture is rotting their brains.

I think the thing that bothers me most about this discourse is that people seem to think that no one can possibly be making a critique of something in good faith. I don't even mind Swifties (of which I am one) getting pissy about every criticism of their favorite artists. But that doesn't mean the opinion was inherently dishonest and invalid and must be a product of subconscious or conscious misogyny. I think plenty of Fantano's takes are disagreeable or even (subjectively) dumb, but I believe that he arrived at them in good faith, sincerely believes them, and could back them up if challenged on them, and that's why I like to watch him. I just wish people knew how to differentiate between, "I think this is a bad take," and, "I think this is a take being made in bad faith."

Not that this is a flex in an anthony fantano comment section but as a certified woman and womansupporter who's actually spent time studying intersectional feminist theory, taylor swift is a much more integral and insidious cog in the capitalist patriarchal machine than any random working/middle class man could ever even dream of being. Intentional or not (and I would lean toward intentional), she is the sanatized, idealized and perfectly marketable Platonic Ideal of flacid liberal americana. She's conventionally pretty, she's "well spoken," she's a hashtag self-made hashtag girlboss, she seems to be in peak health. She's also one of the richest people on earth and will never have to need or want for anything. She can dabble into politics if and when it suits her, and she's experienced enough legitimate misogyny in her career that she's convinced her hordes of women fans that she's Just Like Them when they experience mistreatment in the workplace or at home, actually, and that being an ally to Taylor is being an ally to Women Everywhere. Meanwhile she can afford to remain incredibly insecure and only acknowledge other women artists (or women, at all) when it doesn't threaten her artificially fragile spot at the top of the food chain. Because it is a food chain to her. It's not about equality or anything silly like that. "Feminism" to Taylor seems to be about achieving the idealized success and status of an "alpha male", but as a Girl!, with zero thought to the fact that, to get to that spot, you have to step on a lot of people, and it's not any kinder or better when you're doing it as a lady. "If I was a man" you'd be Donald Trump sis. And you know it (I put well spoken in quotes because I think the use of big fancy words is a shallow metric for determining someone's intelligence or worth, not because I think she's a poor speaker. You should care about what women say even if they don't use words like mercurial and elegy / talk like a politician doing a PR circuit)

@@Mindphaser1 She certainly doesn't care but you apparently do in her place. Who on Earth is blaming her for the fan's dea,th? @juniecw7 ай бұрын
Taylor only likes to uplift and promote other straight white women that make pop music that perfectly fits whatever’s trendy at the moment (like Sabrina Carpenter and Gracie Abrams) because they don’t offer anything interesting enough to step out of her shadow and become bigger than her. She’s threatened by artists like Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Olivia Rodrigo…because not only are they better vocalists/performers but better songwriters who are actually pushing the envelope when it comes to today’s pop music. I'm still not over her being super supportive of Olivia's career then SUING her for Deja Vu when it's not similar to Cruel Summer at all. Though I guess it might be a good thing in a way if it drove Olivia to make a better record that has way less Taylor influence than her first. And Taylor only befriended Ice Spice because she wanted to distance herself from the Matty Healy controversy. That's the only non-white woman she has EVER collaborated with. No doubt if Chappell Roan gets big enough to threaten Taylor's success she will do something to try and squash it. She’s not a girl’s girl or a feminist, she only cares about her own image. I’m tired of Taylor getting praised for such mediocre music when literally every other pop girl (besides the ones she chooses to support) is outdoing her in terms of creativity and songwriting ability. EDIT: Gonna respond to some of the things people have been replying with here to avoid creating too many strings of conversation. I’m aware Olivia’s team wanted to avoid another controversy so they conceded when Taylor asked for credits on Deja Vu. This doesn’t change the fact that Deja Vu and Cruel Summer still don’t sound similar enough to justify her having credits on the song. Taylor doesn’t need even more money from a successful song that she had no part in writing, even if Olivia has cited Taylor as one of her inspirations. There are songs on SOUR that have drawn comparisons to other artists’ songs that sound MUCH more similar, like Brutal with Pump It Up by Elvis Costello. Yet he didn’t feel the need to ask for credits on that song despite honestly having a better case for it because he understands that it isn’t plagiarism just because a song sounds similar to another one. Even if Ice Spice reached out to Taylor herself, that doesn’t change what I said. If anything, that makes it worse because if Ice Spice hadn’t reached out, she’d have collaborated with absolutely zero non-white women. I still believe she accepted Ice Spice’s invitation because of the Matty Healy controversy. It was in her best interest to do so to avoid further criticism from her fans. Taylor can collaborate with who she wants, but it’s hard to believe she’s actually a feminist when she only collaborates with other white women and only mentions feminism to deflect any criticism she receives. And Chappell Roan covering a Taylor Swift song and appearing to be a fan of Taylor doesn’t relate at all to what I said. I don’t have to put “respect” on Taylor’s name just because she’s one of the biggest artists in the world. When I say that I think these other artists are outdoing her, I’m talking in terms of creativity and songwriting, not sales. If you think TTPD is the greatest album ever and better than Charli’s or Billie’s or whoever else’s, then that’s your opinion, but you’re not going to get everyone in the world to agree with you. Taylor’s at a point in her career where she doesn’t need to be held back by music labels and PR teams telling her what she can and can’t do with her music, yet she plays it safe every time. She should be making the best music of her career, but in a lot of people’s opinions, she is not. I’m not saying Taylor Swift has no talent, I just feel that she’s more concerned with her image and becoming the biggest pop star instead of actually good songwriting.

When he said "sexism" in the music industry, he went after the fanbase instead of the actual rappers that make the music because it's like better to them, but fantano also forgets that majority of female rappers today have the same sound. There's only 2-3 female rappers that would be considered different. However when it comes to male rappers, there's still a ton of them that have different concepts and tell different stories. It's not sexism it's just a preference. Majority of male rappers don't rap the same shii or perform as similarly. Also there's more male rappers than there are female rappers. And the fact that he assumed his entire comment section listens to a male rapper like sexy redd but wouldn't listen to a woman was disingenuous af. I think the main issue is some (not all) of the fan base believe you have to love Taylor to be a ‘feminist’… while they attack other women who threaten her chart placement in any way 🙄

I am both amused by and hate the fact that, even as someone who is new to the channel(s) and thus hadn't seen his review of it, I saw this video's title and immediately called it: "Ohhh, he gave "Tortured Poets Department" an unfavorable review, didn't he?"

@@em.roseee the album was almost devoid of really solid melodies, filled with weird half rapping and its songs were half finished, depending ENTIRELY on its admittedly compelling narrative and lyrics. It was fun to read, really not a consistently great listen. I thought he was generous with a 7.

Many of these fans seem to be going through "baby's first feminism". It's the typical "feminism is when girlboss gatekeep gaslight" especially when numbers (ala capitalism and the lie of meritocracy) is held in such high regard over everything else. I am of the believer that most of them will grow out of it though. Young people in previous eras were equally cringe, they just weren't able to broadcast about it 24/7 because there was no social media.

Taylor is as much of a feminist champion as Stephen from Django Unchained is a black icon
