They were built in Japan. I owned a 2003 4-door automatic Echo for 16 years in Canada. In that time, it only needed oil and other fluid changes and front pads changed once. Surprisingly, all the hoses were still good at 16 years. It was an excellent, simple car, built like a tiny tank. I'm glad I added the cabin filter. I eventually traded it in on a RAV4.

It's besides the point and I know what you mean and agree. HOWEVER I have a 98 ES300 in the fleet and an 02 ES330 also. 01 was the last of the 3.0 version. The 02 has electronic throttle. Beware of the mat. If it covers the pedal, the electronic throttle is easily susceptible to loss of control due to WOT and the powerful engine.

I have a 2001 Yaris , 1.0 litre engine 68hp. Very nippy if revved, very economical if driven sensibly 50 mpg easily , used to be 59/60 with E5 petrol . 1 clutch kit after teaching people to drive , very cheap and easy to do. Then just service bits. Great runaround 71 mpg on the motorway! !! Fits in any parking space. Will no doubt outlive me.

Back in 2005 we factory ordered a Echo hatchback "stripper". Manual transmission, manual steering the only thing we optioned for was a CD player in the basic radio. We had just arrived at the dealership on delivery day when a fellow walked over and asked us if we wanted to sell it to him for a small profit, we declined the offer. Anyway, it was a fantastic little car that served us well and eventually was purchased from us by our daughter who after a few years sold it to a friend. A solid investment, it did everything that we wanted, I love hatchbacks.

@@davidnull5590 No I would not. The standard steering was geared properly for non-assist, it was very easy to steer even when parallel parking. Never had to worry about fluid, pumps or hoses plus it saved a bit more weight.

The next gen. eliminated the power steering hydraulic and it's now electric, lots of people don't like it, but I have avoided the costs of the leaks that come with using hydraulics, hoses and the rack and pinion units themselves develop leaks and need replacing.

I saw the rear seat and I already knew which car was. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend! I think it looks oddly cool, specially the one that has the lower fenders around it. Don’t let the looks distract you on how amazing this little machine is. Proud owner of a 2000 Echo coupe automatic. 270k on the clock and still going strong. It’s been my beater car ever since (my other ride is a ‘06 T4R SR5 4WD). It’s also been a learning tool on how to wrench and fix things and it definitely has saved me a ton of money on gas. The engine is burning oil a little, which is the 1NZFE’s Achilles heel, but is still capable of doing 35mpg which is impressive for a 20 year old car IMO. Best beater car ever, hands down.

I have a 2005 4 Dr sedan now with 222,000km. Echo is bumpy and noisy engine but very reliable/ fuel efficient. It get the job done. Body is light and makes a big difference in gas mileage. No major issues with it. Very easy to drive and park.

I Quit watching him.I hadTercel and then an Echo and now I have a Yaris and a Scion XA. I haven't ever gotten over 38 mpg. But on all of them I averaged over 30 for sure. I live in the mountains and I push them really hard. Out of al of them I like the Yaris the best and it handles really well. My Lexus ES330 is hardly used. For trips. BTW my echo I sold 2 years ago, The guy still drives it and has over 400,000 miles. Great Video. Thank You

Just watched it again after a year. I still have my 2002 echo. Its a 1.3L manual but I only seem to get 5.8L/100km at best, though it runs well. Rather than get rid of it I have purchased a Rostra cruise control which I plan to fit over the next month. My Echo is at 200,000km and I think it has many miles in it yet.

I have the car that replaced the Echo, a first year (US) '07 Yaris. An early release, mine has been on the road since April 2006, so this spring it will be 18 years old. It's never broken down, has every original part save for battery, tires, 1 accessory belt and 1 set of front brake pads. Starter, alternator, struts, waterpump, muffler, etc etc all original. Even the a/c has never been touched, still cold. Same bullet-proof drivetrain as this Echo. No leaks or burning of oil. No squeaks or rattles. We do all maint ourselves, oil, trans fluid changes, filters etc... Such a simple, straight forward easy design. I'll never sell it. I swear the engine is smoother and quieter than when it was new.

Love the channel. I have a 2001 Toyota Sienna with the original drivetrain and 450,000 miles. Routine maintenance. I just manage the fluids( Synthetic) like a hawk. Only use OEM for all critical parts . Too Many counterfeit parts on Ebay and Amazon. Don't by aftermarket parts from China or Mexico. Spoke to Denso. Their aftermarket products don't have to have the same standards as the ones they make for Toyota. I was in shock. They also can't monitor all the counterfeit products sold in the aftermarket. That is why you should buy senors and spark plugs from the dealer.

I soon got tired of the Scotty Kilmer clickbait a long time ago. That clown always reposts old videos with just new titles. Greedy I guess. As for the Toyota Echo, I just got around to putting a 2000 Echo back on the road after sitting in the yard for 17 years. I bought it in 2004 but in 2006 a young family member was going a bit too fast on a curved road with fresh snow, and didn't know to pump the brakes on a vehicle without anti-lock brakes, so standing on the brakes resulted in the Echo sliding about 70 feet across a yard and right off a dock, down 10 feet into about 2 feet of water covered by a thin sheet of ice. Remarkably the Echo didn’t nose dive but instead landed flat so the entire front end was unscathed until when the tow driver pulled it out and didn’t bother to lower the rear when the front wheels touched the dock, instead the bumper cover was ripped forward by dragging while the Echo was almost completely vertical in the air. I immediately changed the oil, pulled the seats and carpet out, pulled the plugs from the floorboard so the water could drain and placed a dehumidifier in the car to dry out any moisture I couldn’t see. We used a carpet cleaner on the seats and carpet as well. Then I swapped the ECU with one from a salvage yard and drove the Echo to a local oil change shop because I couldn’t get anything out of the trans lines. Well they couldn’t either so I just parked it until I could get around to slapping another automatic trans in it. Well after sitting for 17 years, I found a trans for $100 and while tempted to switch over to a stick-shift, my wife wouldn’t go for it. When I dragged the Echo for the ruts the tires made, I discovered I had to replace the floorboard on the drivers side since it started to resemble a Flintstone mobile. I also found rust ravaged the rocker panels hidden under the plastic body cladding, same for the metal under the cladding around the rear wheels. (The Echo in the video doesn’t have that plastic cladding that wraps around like mine and every other Echo I’ve ever seen) The rust on my Echo is less than the two I recently harvested parts from in the salvage yard, which had rusted out trunk floors and even the hump behind the rear seats looked like swiss cheese. Before I tried starting, I pulled the spark plugs and sprayed Liquid Wrench (a penetrant) into the cylinders in the hope it would dissolve any rust that may have formed and perhaps break any bond between the rings and the cylinders. I let it sit and then I used a socket on the crankshaft bolt to slowly move the pistons with a breaker bar. Not frozen at all. I removed the fuel tank, cleaned out the old varnished gas, replaced the corroded non-working fuel pump, and flushed the lines. A fresh battery and the car started right up but it screeched badly because the alternator was frozen. I checked it before I started and managed to free it up but it was clear to me the bearings didn’t survive so I replaced it with a new $74, 70 amp lifetime warranty (yeah right) alternator from eBay. Then the compressor started making noises I didn’t like so I replaced that as well. A warning about the unbranded AC compressor ($109.25) I bought on eBay, the depth of a bolt hole for the refrigerant line was too shallow, which wouldn’t allow the line to seal. Wasn’t even close and the bolts holding the seal plugs were too short, only allowing one thread to catch, so I had to place two nuts on the bolt and slice about 3/16” off. Removing the nuts acted like a thread chaser to remove the burr. The seller refunded $20 for the hassle. There are probably 100 different seller names of the same compressor, using the same word for word ads, so I suspect a seller has found a way to negate issues that buyers may reveal. The radiator cooling fan made a racket as well since the plastic shroud was a bit broken so I replaced that with a TYC assembly for $77.40 on Amazon. Then I found the dual cage blower motor was frozen, which I managed to free up but that didn’t last long so I bought a new one for $43.69 on Amazon but it appears they’ve now raised the price to $64.99 $9.99 on Amazon for a cabin air filter (activated carbon) The Echo runs smooth and quiet so I changed the oil and filter again. (Mobil 1 extended performance high mileage full synthetic 5W-30 oil and Mobil 1 M1-103A extended performance oil filter) Then I installed all new brake rotors, pads, drums, shoes, wheel cylinders...except the front calipers, and of course one caliper piston stuck in the bore and wouldn’t retract, so I merely disassembled it and cleaned out the gunk that the brake fluid drain/replacement didn’t get. I may still replace the calipers someday but it’s working great right now. Then I replaced the cracking tires with a set of Summit Ultramax A/S all-season 175/65R14 86T tires from Amazon ($47.92 each) I installed the tires myself on an old Harbor Freight manual tire machine but for this set I used a $18.84 Duck head with a $14.99 centering cone from Amazon. I replaced the sun damaged headlights with Depo lamps ($169.99 eBay) We drove the car around and at the end of the day I checked the oil just before changing it again since I considered it a breaking in again cycle but to my surprise...the oil looked like a milkshake, as if the head gasket failed. My Stant coolant pressure tester has a failed plastic adapter which meant I couldn’t pinpoint the problem so I poured a tiny 8oz bottle of K-Seal (ST5501, $13.24 Amazon) into the radiator and it actually worked! A couple oil/filter changes within days, with cheaper SuperTech synthetic oil and Fram oil filters ( I had on the shelf from back before I discovered Fram isn’t a good brand) and the lubrication system seems fine so I finished with my favorite oil/filter (Mobil 1 extended performance high mileage full synthetic and Mobil 1 extended performance oil filter) Well after driving around for a couple hours, I checked the oil and detected gasoline on the dipstick. Suspecting a stuck open fuel injector, I tested them using a Allosun tester ($33.37 Amazon last year) The injectors appeared to have a good spray pattern and no leakage when using a carb cleaner spray but I suppose an injector could fail under the pressure that the fuel pump produces so I’ll just swap the #4 injector with a salvage yard find since I found that cylinder was wet when I pulled the injectors. Looks new inside but finding a replacement for the cracked windshield is a problem. One way or another, my Michigan Toyota Echo is going to be revived.

I was given a 2000 Echo sedan with only 8,000 miles on it about 10 years ago in exchange for some work I did for an elderly neighbor. At first, I thought it was goofy looking. It didn't take long to fall in love with it. I drove that car everywhere. With fuel mileage at 36 MPG, I loved driving past gas stations where other drivers were fueling up their gas guzzling SUV's! I had to give up that car when I reached 94,000 miles because my mom gave me her car to drive. I missed the Echo so much that I recently bought another one with only 30,091 miles on it! This one is a 2003 coupe. Everything Scott said is 100% true! Toyota Echo's are an engineering marvel!

I have driven it almost 128000 km still like a new car, very reliable, very strong strong body compare to new models. Love this car for so many reason. ❤

I had a 1982 Tercel HB, drove the wheels off it and decommissioned it in 1999. That thing ran like a champ and was on the road so much it rarely got a chance to cool down.

Great car for sure; sadly, most folks drive SUVs and an encounter between this car and a SUV likely wont end well. It is debatable about SUV ownership. It depends on market. And also when the gen cones out during high gas prices or not and that dictates fuel saver sales vs larger use vehicles. For your application in Canada, the compact SUV RAV4 is ideal because you need a AWD for the snow and it's large enough to protect yet still small enough that a little old lady can operate it. Now in places where cars are popular or AWD isn't needed, a Camry is adequate. And many are out there like you mentioned due to its longevity and for the longest time it was the most popular car for North America before the RAV took over. An equatable equivalent is the older Executive Sedan by Lexus. Similar in price but stronger built for sound and ride. Avalon's are great also. They are similar to the ES3x0.. but are less likely to be gouged by mechanics who see the badge and charge extra for it.

Still driving my Australian model 2002 Echo hatch 1.3 Litre 2NZFE, bought it new, 185,000km and still going strong (and economically!). Looking around for a replacement over the next year or so but difficult to get something as comfortable on the highway and as economic without spending a lot more . They say these engines are good for 200,000miles (that's 320,000km) so maybe I will just keep it!

STOP talking about the Toyota Echo! I got the 2005 sedan model and I've driven it for over 16 years. I HATE it so much! It is a terrible box on wheels. If you stomp the accelerator, it does nothing. The tires will squeal and burn rubber if you push the accelerator just so. The thing is terrible with gas, it only takes little sips and it takes forever to empty the gas tank. Everything is manual and basic, I'm surprised they don't have a manual crank for the windshield wipers. I hate that there's nothing to break. The trunk of the sedan is a vast cavern of emptiness, moreso if you drop the back seats. I've carted stacks of 2x4x8's and 10 foot lengths of PEX pipe and 12 foot rolls of housewrap (sticking out the passenger window a little). I can tell you that it does NOT like to be loaded up with more than 6 big bags of concrete. You can up the tire pressure for better milage, but it is a rough ride. I've never gotten stuck with winter tires on. People will laugh at you for the central pod console. All the other Echo driving weirdos will wink and wave at you (because they KNOW). STOP talking about the Echo. Shhhhh! I need cheap parts. Need a driver's side mirror right now. Tuck tape is slowly failing to hold it on. Maybe a driver's side locking mechanism too, the auto-unlock button (one of the ONLY luxuries) sometimes jams it halfway up. Could be bad if I need to get out in a hurry...gotta roll the manual window down and pull the outside door handle. I hate this channel too. I waste so much time watching all his repair videos. Hours and hours of learning from this kind gentleman, makes my brain hurt. He won't stop making new videos.

I've had 2 of them and I think it's the best damned car (for reliability) Toyota ever made. 5 speed with the little 1.5 liter motor. I once got 47 mpg on a long trip. just basic maintenance like oil changes at 5K miles. I bought a RAV 4 and wish I had kept the Echo. The RAV 4 gets 1/2 the gas mileage. I never understood why the Echo wasn't more popular than it was. The entire car was made in Japan. Update: I was able to reacquire my 2001 Echo I sold 3 years ago and am selling my RAV4.

My sister loved her 3 door hatch Echo. Sister in law loved her 4 door sedan Echo. Toyota replaced her rusty floor pans under warantee just before that Dodge Power wagon totaled it. They tried to buy another new Echo but Toyota had gone to the Yaris. They got a used Matrix instead.

I believe I know where his rattle was coming from. These cars are very air tight and if you drive with the driver's side window down, the air pressure will force the passenger window down slightly, causing it to rattle against the door frame. I had trouble finding it as well.

@Billy Bob Scotty is no joke, he’s great and if you’ve watched him for a long time you’ll know what I mean. You misunderstood, he pumps out lots of videos to help people out with their car problems with his 54 years of experience. With his videos, you get a good laugh and you learn something good at the same time. Most mechanic videos are boring, but he makes it nice and enthusiastic. I personally like his loud voice, don’t have to deal with not hearing somebody talking when trying to learn something. Not forcing anybody to like his videos, but just pointing out the truth as far as I’m concerned. He’s a good person with a kind heart, helping people out. You either judge a book by its cover, or you watch and learn.

I owned a 2002 1.3L 2NZ-FE (NOT 1.5L) Yaris auto for 14yrs here in the UK, 33 mpg - 35 mpg is the norm my friend, 49mpg was the best i ever got once or twice,that's it!! I've looked after it,serviced properly with proper tyre pressures & hardly no weight in the trunk (boot)

@@tardeliesmagic I was doing a bit better, but then my MAF sensor had to be replaced and they put an after-market unit and I noticed the mileage dropped about 3 or so MPG. We have a lot of stop and go traffic here in town, I can do better on the highway at around 65. Since I have a 4 speed, I cannot get the same MPG as a 7 or 8 speed or CVT equipped modern car.

When the HVAC is on defrost (not the glass), the AC compressor runs. AC kills my Yaris fuel economy by 5 to 10%. My average is 40mpg with a 5 speed -- and using 5th as much as possible (even at 30mph). Autos aren't as good (we have on too). Highway miles are easily 45mpg.

At 22 years I can say a lot of things about it. But instead I'll say that 4000 mile oil changes are critical. Use whatever oil but I liked the cleaning action of synthetic. I've put 30 weight non detergent mixed with 5w30. I don't recommend thick oil but I do like Tacoma oil filters and Mobil 1 0w30. Get OEM pads. Change the transmission fluid every 30000. Use carnauba Wax. It's a magnet for vandals and mean kids.
