Byron Katie

5 жыл бұрын

A man at the 6 September LIVE-At Home with Byron Katie event reads his stressful thought to Byron Katie and the audience. "I am angry and disgusted with those who support the current administration." This thought usually occurs to him when he's reading an article or some comments on Facebook. Katie brings him back to the moment when he is reading. "How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought, and you're reading an Op-Ed?"
"Very tight in the throat and chest," says the man.
"I want you to know where you feel it," Katie says, "so that the physical reaction can remind you to look to what's going on in your mind. What images of the future do you see when you're believing this thought?"
"Environmental devastation, people with no access to education or doctors, people being silenced for having alternative beliefs, and basic 1984 fear," says the man.
"The 1984 image is of the past in your mind," Katie says. "I want you to know why people often say, 'Be here now.' You're reading and you see what is not happening now; it's a case of imagination witnessed in your mind's eye. And you see future fearful images. You become upset yourself as you witness false past and future as a movie in your head. Who would you be without those thoughts, images of past/future?”
"I'd be Forest Gump," says the man. "I'd be happy. I'd be a much more sane and calm person."
"So is it really those of us who are supporting the current administration who upset you, or are you just sitting in an internal movie upsetting yourself?"
"I'm absolutely just sitting there upsetting myself," says the man, laughing.
"And then others take the blame."
"I guess I'm kind of trying to rule the world."
"I'd drop the 'kind of,'" Katie says. (Audience laughter.) "Now how would you turn your thought around?"
"I'm disgusted with myself for assuming all of these things about people I don't know anything about."
"The way you have identified yourself, you're up here and we're way down here," says Katie. "We seem to be who you believe us to be.
"Another turnaround," the man says. "Thank you for supporting something I don't believe in, so that I can learn a different way of looking at it."
"A clear mind is a beautiful mind," says Katie. "Can you find another turnaround?"
"I'm not disgusted with anybody, because that's insane," says the man.
"I love your open mind," Katie says. "That tight feeling in your chest will always let you know when your mind is closed."
When the man gets to statements two to six on his Worksheet, he is astonished that he now feels embarrassed to read them.
"What we are thinking and believing is the cause of all suffering. No administration has the power to cause you stress or ultimately take your freedom from you." -Byron Katie

I have great respect for this guy for being so honest in a public environment. The vast majority of politicized and polarized people, left and right, are from from being able to look into the mirror.

I think those people who are putting down what Katie is doing here are missing the entire point of "The Work." She's absolutely *not* telling this man to be passive and tune out the things which passionately concern him. She's advising him to get rid of all the pictures/beliefs in his mind which cause him stress and anguish so that he can be *more* effective at working on the issues he's concerned with. Indeed, she urges that he, himself, "rise up." But to do that, he has to free himself from all outside pictures (which are what have been angering and disgusting him) so that he can really be effective--and at peace. Question: Can you be more effective in this world when you're feeling anger and disgust, or when you're feeling peace within your self?

Your statement contradicts itself. How can you stay passionate about a cause if you get rid of all the beliefs about the existence of that cause.

It is this very work that got me to research more truthful literature about the current administration and see that it is not all bad! Before that I was closed closed closed. That is the way to come together as humans. Open your eyes and look deeply. I see merits on both sides and love all people. It is an amazing way to live. Living in anger and hatred of others goes against everything we stand for on both sides. No one likes to hate others.

I feel that hating political opponennts is just a form of projection of our inner demons. We basically hate parts of ourselves and project them on other pepole who we have never met. But i have met alot of pepole who have different political opinions than me and they are all very sweet pepole.

Thank you for providing a venue for bringing to light so many of the emotions and thoughts that most of us are grappling with now. I just keep leaning into the fact that we are all part of the one consciousness and when I look at the masterpiece of all created beings, I rest in the knowledge that the destiny of all humanity is to realize our oneness, beauty and goodness. I will strive to act out of this knowingness.

Quote of video description: "..... What images of the future do you see when you're believing this thought?" "Environmental devastation, people with no access to education or doctors, people being silenced for having alternative beliefs, and basic 1984 fear," says the man." You don't need to fear this, man. It has already happened long time ago (and still is) - except 'no access to doctors' (sadly).

I really needed to hear this video and take this in. I've been angry. It stretched reality open to an nearly unrecognizable, unknown level, as in a singular paradigm, a full shift in focus, and brought tears of compassion for "them" and for me. "Anger is a lack of self-awareness. And that's the ultimate education." The experience of anger... results from not being aware. Investigating the reaction, I felt it. I was unaware. Indeed, why would anyone in his/her right mind actually choose to experience anger? Only a somehow maddened mind will unwittingly do so. Being angry is simply unintelligent. The anger gone, it just feels delicious, really heavenly. Right here, right now. And happily and intelligently get out, vote and work and donate for my candidates. And do it not angry.

One turn around i thought of was '*I* shouldnt support the administration', meaning that sometimes when we oppose in certain ways all we do is underline the fearful stories of the people we're opposing, which strengthens the administration.

I love this guy. There is a huge difference between his intelligence and good heart and the angry flocks of racists who are spewing hate everywhere. I've sat down with many people who believe differently from me and what I find-I don't have the skill of Katie-but I get to a point with them where they might open up and instead they close, lie, say something hateful. More than anything it's sad. I understand that it's not my job to change them; but they are doing real damage to our country and to real people. What do we do about *that*? There are those who are gentle and care and go to talk to Katie; and there are those who are easily propagandized by the powerful and hateful. And I don't see what to do about that. Katie says education is what she's doing right there, and it's true. But we're educating ourselves, not those who are destroying this country. I don't know.

Mahalo nui loa, BK! Another winner! This gentleman made my heart sing! If more of us, Republican/Democrat, Conservative/Liberal could do the "Work", and really dig deep into their fantasies/beliefs, my sense is that there would be great healing and an end to this horrific polarization, the immense divide of the American people. This doesen't mean we would be in agreement, but that we could be deeply respectful of another's ideas and beliefs. How we could then listen to each other and truly understand the hearts, minds, and souls of our fellow BEings. May we all "Be the change we want to see." On another note, things are not always the way they appear. When I observe the political climate, with all the duality, confusion, hatred, etc., where I go with President Trump is that he is indeed the disrupter, maybe a necessary disrupter. Much like BK is a disrupter to people's sense of reality. Shifts feel like SH.T! That can be a good thing, transformative. Paradigm shifts, as much as we want them to look and feel pretty, aren't always so. They can be very messy and feel horribly frightening. Perhaps this is Planet Earth's "Dark night of the soul." I've experienced several of those personally in my lifetime, and while they felt Dark and like an earttquake to my soul and identity, the end result was personal transformation (wonderful) at levels I can't describe. "We have met the enemy and he is us." (Pogo) This is how I choose to view the current political climate. Therefore, NO FEAR. Aloha...

Ask me anything, Sparky. I didn’t vote for Trump-I voted for Jill Stein. I sure as hell didn’t vote for $hillary-did you? The arrogance of your statement is heightened by the real chance that you voted for one of the most morally bereft individual to ever walk the face of the earth. Do you know that there is a Deep State of sick individuals who has been trying to stage a coup on our democracy for the past two years? Do you know that these people are satanic pedophiles? This isn’t a conspiracy theory. This was exposed in Wikileaks. Seth Rich worked for the DNC before he was murdered. He discovered that these thugs were stealing Bernie’s donations and flipping voter registration records. There was no Russian interference except regarding the phony dossier that No-Name McCain procured from the Russians. So YOU wake the eff up! Your ignorance is destroying this country!

The only way she would do that is if a Trump supporter said s/he was bothered (e.g., "angry and disgusted") by people who denigrated Trump, and s/he wanted to explore those feelings through the Work. Remember, everyone's doing the best they can, until they hit something that's not working for them. And then--but only if they want to--they can try to find a better way for themselves. That's where the Work comes in.

There are a lot of ways to help this person without absolving the responsibility and complicity of the individuals who put the President in the White House. He is talking about some VERY real future possibilities, and being told it’s just some 1984 stuff... that’s arguably less helpful than being disgusted less than half the time.

Another one who missed the point. She always asks if you really are sure that something is true. SO are you really sure that Americans are jailing children at the border and Americans there are molesting children? Are the Americans you know like that? Are you sure Americans act like that?
@willowashe
@willowashe 5 жыл бұрын
Johnny King Complicity is important. When somebody votes, they are signing off on the policies of the administration they are voting. Yes, there are 14000 immigrant children being detained by the US government. I can’t speak to molsetation, but when a government cares so little about the safety of children that separating them from their parents is okay, I don’t know how much oversight is really happening. You can’t Jedi mind trick this away. It’s happening. The average person on the street may not be responsible for it, but if you voted Republican in the midterms or still actively support the Republican Party, you’re making the statement that this is okay. Ignorance is not an excuse, the information is very widely available.

I am really amazed ... She portrays herself as free yet she is so attached to her appearance that she had to do several plastic surgeries.
