I totally get why you’re frustrated with Shadowheart’s secrecy. She can be a tough nut to crack. But that’s exactly what makes her such an interesting character to me. Shadowheart’s been through a lot of trauma and manipulation, which is why she’s so guarded. As a cleric of Shar, she was taught and made to abide oaths that require her to keep secrets and discourage trust. So, her reluctance to open up isn’t just stubbornness; it’s a defense mechanism she’s developed over years of being brainwashed and fearing betrayal. As you continue playing and gaining her trust, you’ll notice that she slowly starts questioning her beliefs and the path she’s been forced to follow. The more you support her, the more she’ll reveal about her past and the doubts she has. This slow unraveling is where you really start to see her depth. Her story is one of self-discovery, struggling with her identity, and ultimately deciding whether to keep following the path laid out for her or to forge her own way. I know it’s easy to get frustrated with how secretive she is, but that’s also what makes her one of the most rewarding characters to engage with. The appeal of Shadowheart isn’t just about getting her approval; it’s about understanding the layers of someone who’s been through so much and watching her possibly break free from her dark past for a brighter future.

So I finally found the time to watch the entire video in one sitting. lol. My life is too busy. I just can’t help but have a personal disagreement with your opinion on Shadowheart. Being a follower of Shar is basically like being in a cult. When the wound on her hand hurts her, it’s because the cult leader is punishing her. So when you saved Arabella in the grove, Shadowheart mentally approved of you saving a child, then her hand sparks. Shar is punishing her for WRONG THINKING! Then she snaps back to thinking the way Shar expects her to think. She keeps secrets because her cult leader demands it, the same way real cults isolate their followers to the point of cutting them off from friends and family members. These are experiences that can be very hard to relate to unless you have actually been in a cult. My personal opinion is that being raised Pentecostal will not give you the full experience of being in a cult, it does bring it’s own traumas that need to be worked through, but it’s different. Also, based on your edit, I question if you were talking to Shadowheart as much as you need to be in the early part of the game. Every time I play, I get Shadowheart to tell me about her love of night orchids when I am level 2. I talk to everyone and do so many partial long rests that it drives my husband crazy. I don’t want to miss anything. If she tells you about her love of night orchids before your first night together, when you are trying to get her to talk about herself, she will do her usual say that there is nothing to tell. You then have the option to remind her that she loves night orchids and she is flattered that you remembered. (I don’t remember if there is an approval score for that or not.) Also, in Act 2, you can find a night orchid and give it to her as a romantic gesture. I would have loved it if that had been a part of this video. I’m not liking this video as much as I loved your Astarion video because it felt like you weren’t giving her the grace that you give to Astarion. Now I am kinda tempted to start recording my play throughs. Lol. But me recording and editing the videos might drive my hubby crazy with how much time it will eat up.

I did get the prompt for the tell me more about yourself, she disapproved of me using persuasion to get her to tell me about the night orchids until after she'd told me about worshiping Shar. I did edit a LOT of content with her out, after hitting the Act 2 bite scene my skin just kept crawling and I had to force myself to finish her story and then I put off editing for a month because I was so icked out by having to force Astarion like that. I felt like if I put everything I thought and felt in, I'd be being way too harsh on her because I left her run feeling so violated. I don't really have a problem with her worshipping Shar, I do get annoyed at her secrets, which if she wasn't always demanding honesty from me and others wouldn't be an issue. I grew up in a high demand religion, like I said in my conclusion, so I get it. I tried to give her a chance, but when that Astarion bite scene in Act 2 happened, and she made me as an SA victim feel as unsafe she she made Astarion feel she was no longer forgivable in my eyes. And, to be fair, I grew up in a branch of Pentecostalism where if I disagreed, I was brought to the front of the church and held down to have demons cast out of me. I had times where a gun was held to my head while I had to refuse to denounce god to "practice" for the end of times. I wasn't allowed to listen to mainstream music or watch mainstream TV because the devil could come off the screen and into my life. I was required to pray god into my heart multiple times a day because if I did anything the leaders disliked, even if I didn't know, I was going to be going to hell if I died. I used to have nightmares and was told those were demons coming to me in my sleep and that I had a prophetic gift. All along with the son of the pastor who was the youth pastor SAing myself and two other girls, but being told I wouldn't be believed because I'd already reported someone else and no one believes you twice - which ended up being true. And that was on top of the shout and dance and jump a pew laying of hands and fainting in the presence of the lord standard Pentecostalism. I choose not to share that part of my past openly very often because people get very upset when I call the religion I grew up in a cult because people take it too personally if you talk any "shade" toward a Christian based religion. But, all of that heavy stuff aside, you should try doing recording and editing videos even if it is just one every once in a while just for fun. It can be a really great outlet for creativity. Plus you can always start for free with OBS (to screen capture on PC), Capcut for free on PC and Phone to edit, and Canva for free to make thumbnails.

@@kiterafrey oh wow. Thanks for all that. I really love how thorough and thoughtful you are in your replies. Thanks for the advice for if I wanted to try making videos. Unfortunately, in my situation, I don’t think doing it would be that simple. My laptop is really old and couldn’t even handle putting BG3 on it. My husband has BG3 on his personal computer, but his personal computer is in his office next to his work computer. He works from home and the hours he works would make sharing the office with me really hard. He does share it with me now some, he doesn’t have a problem with sharing, but increasing the amount of time I am on his computer would be awkward for both of us. So I play on our PS5 mostly. And I can see the quality difference between my PS5 games and the BG3 PC games. I also know myself well enough that I will get frustrated if the recording feels like it’s not the quality I want in my videos. So to even get started, I need spend money on getting a PC.

@@goldenhermit You can always do shared clips on PS5 that was how I started, but it sadly doesn't leave soace to edit. But the important part is that you're having fun, even if you're only playing for yourself and not recording.

Look I’m not the biggest shadowheart fan but I think it’s hypocritical to say you dislike her for all the secrets she keeps and yet love Astarion despite him doing the same thing. Both of them are someone that lost people vilify and so keep that secret to avoid the risk of being hated for it. Also getting mad at Shadowheart for wanting Astarion to bite the drow but then not being mad at Astarion for pushing Shadowheart to embrace her abuser and become a dark Justiciar. Like it seems all the things you stated for reasons you dislike shadowheart and things that you excused for Astarion.

Okay, so, I heavily disagree on your stance you have on Shadowheart, and I really feel like you're not giving her enough grace, and that a lot of things about her character arc went over your head, but I saw some other comments addressing that, so I won't repeat what has already been said. What I will say is that her distrust and dislike of the Githyanki (and by extension, Lae'zel) is understandable and even justified to an extent Before I get into the meat and potatoes of things, yes, Shadowheart stealing the artefact from the Githyanki wasn't exactly a morally good thing to do. But context MATTERS! Her going on the mission to steal the artefact from the Githyanki and then retrieve it to her cloister wasn't her idea. She was sent on that mission by her mother superior. If she refused to go on the mission, it's VERY likely she'd get punished. We can also presume that Shadowheart was taught to dislike the Gith when the mother superior was grooming her for the mission. Another thing to note is that in the lore of DnD, Githyanki are an evil alligned race. They are raiders and they're quite violent (a bg3 specific example of that is whatever happened to the Rosymorn monastery. The Githyanki murdered the monks who lived in the monastery so that they may establish a creche there. The Githyanki basically colonized that place which is... Really bad) Githyanki also tend to think of themselves as the superior race. You've probably noticed how Gith characters call non-Giths "istik". That term can be roughly translated to "stranger/foreigner" and it has very often a negative connotation. But in short, Githyanki are generally racist/xenophobic of everyone who isn't a Gith themselves. With these facts about Githyanki in mind, it's really not wrong for Shadowheart to not distrust Lae'zel and be on guard around her and the Githyanki as a whole. One last thing I'll mention is that if you don't kill Lae'zel, Shadowheart will overtime have a change of heart and come to see that Lae'zel isn't a bad person, and both of them will have a mutual respect of each other.

I was thinking about ShadowHeart and the whole Nightsong issue. The only reason she spares the nightsong is to get information not because it's the right thing todo. Or to save lives. And lets say you are the DarkUrge Trying to right your wrongs and she kills the nightsong. It forces the slayer form on the darkurge and kills the last light inn people. Also if the Dark urge kills the Moon maiden at the last light inn Shadowheart freaks out about it and says all sorts of mean stuff. But it's okay if shadowheart murders the whole inn with her actions. The more I look at Her in the story and all the out comes Shadowheart is not "good". She is an jerkface. !@#@@!#

She's definitely one of the evil run options. She, Lae'zel, & Astarion 💯 are written to ensure an evil Tav/Durge wouldn't be going solo. Compared to Karlach & Wyll who are good only. Gale is the most in-between oddly. Edit: Though I don't think being able to do the evil run makes you evil, it's all in choices. But 💯 Shart is meant to start evil, Sharrains are a very dark violent murderous & evil alliance religion.

@@kiterafrey I know it's a complex issue. I was going to ask you have you done a drow durge only astarion run. Was the approval harder on a redeemed arc?

@thecrackpotartist I've done a Seldarine Drow Durge Good and Evil run. It did take longer to get his hook up scene as a lot of the early approvals come from tormenting goblins and you can't as a Drow as none will fight you. But I was able to still romance him. For the good run his approval for not ascending was normal. Though I've bot done drow with only Astarion in party.

@@kiterafrey Yeah I have a soft spot for for my poor little windmill gnome. He and Astarion are my two favs in the game. Shadowheart I just can't stand. I did her personal quest as a bestie and I have to say I was shock when she offed her parents. After all the moral bs she said to my Durge. She is just an ahole for the most part. lol. I don't feel bad when I off her some platythroughs. Also I played as a gith once and she is really rude when you save her shows who she is on the inside. I understand she has trama. But she is one of the worst to deal with.

@@thecrackpotartist I love Barcus, he deserves so much better than Wulbren, and I hope after we make him the Ironhand leader in Act 3 that he goes on to find good friends and someone who actually loves him as much and as selflessly as he loved Wulbren.

Ok. So I am not done watching this video yet…but I can’t help but ask, did you try to save Halsin while you were in the goblin camp? I really want to know what her approval scores are in the room where he is caged.

I filmed it over a month ago, the editing was the longest part. I believe I skipped straight to saving the grove. However, I have in the past saved Halsin after Minthara discovers the grove. If you have slept after informing Minthara, so she's gone, he'll tell you to meet him at the Grove, but will not in playable in any fights. If you haven't slept and Minthara hasn't left yet you'll attack the leaders the same as always. For approvals, since I did get to see these approves recently on a different challenge run I was filming for, she approves of saving Halsin as a Bear - she approves of saving all animals. As well, she approves of asking Halsin to join you as a Bear, however after he says he'll have to fight everyone she approves you asking him to stay and then doing sneak attacks on the leaders.
