Re impossible welding positions: A long time ago my girl friend and I were headed out to dinner but I had to stop by a friends to see progress on a repair. He was stuck because even hanging up side down, there was now way to get in to see while welding. I said simple, just use a mirror. Girl friend produced a mirror from her purse and I welded the part. I was a bit embarrassed the welding put a bunch of dingle berries on her mirror, so she said “ keep it” . We got married a month later. That was 44 years ago. We are still married. I still have mirror in my tool box and I still use it.

Everyone who ever got any good at ANYTHING began as a beginner. Nobody is born knowing how to do stuff already. You learn as you go along, and everyone has to start somewhere. I remember when I first started training to drive 18-wheelers. When I arrived for my first day of classes in December 2004, I had never even been inside of a big rig, let alone ever driven one. Now, nearly 20 years later, I can just hop up in one, push off the airbrakes, throw 'er in gear and motor on down the highway just as if I had been doing it all of my life. But I HAVE'NT been doing it all my life. I had to start somewhere just like everyone else, as I did that first day in December '04, and learn things by trial and error as I went along.

@@joeblowe5813you want to drive the fun rig I learned on at 14 I still have grandpa's 68 Mack the old Armstrong power stearing (if your arms are strong use the power to steer it) 2 transmissions and a doubler a 5 speed in front of a 3 speed backed by a high/low box so essentially a 30 speed with a coffin sleeper and a steel headache rack (I've toyed with the idea of making it a daycab if it ever needs paint again) originally a logging truck grandpa added a 3rd drive axle lockers and a custom quad axle lowboy for hauling drag lines cranes and heavy equipment so rarely do you have to use all 3 sticks but he made me learn top speed is around 58-62 mph loaded to 110k or empty it stays in the shed after the restore unless a special job comes up then the 55 Chevy 3100 wrecker and the 65 C20 with the utility bed and headache rack and strobes come out with it for pilot cars just like grandpa did we call it our antique parade the 55 still has the original (rebuilt a few times) flathead 6 with a 4 speed and 2 speed rear-end the 65 has the original 292 6 banger with a 4 speed and full floating 14 bolt they both have late 90s blazer seats for comfort after the restore but the old bulldog is fun for a short trip I couldn't imagine driving it daily across country like grandpa did to support his family

As a kid who grew up in mechanic garages and tool shops, I appreciate how calm you are with Rhett. Im 27 now, and i would get pissed whenever the older guys got upset that im not perfect. It's a fine line when teaching. When the boss or the older guys yell or criticize it makes the novice feel bad. To avoid that feeling in the future, they must either quit or improve. A father or father figure can get the same feeling with an honest evaluation. Since young people seek the approval of mentors and fellow workers, praise should be proportionate to the quality of work.

I've been the senior machine operator before, and yeah, is is counterproductive to get mad and yell at the new person. You can't just ignore them, either. Sometimes, though, it's so busy with a rush job that it's hard to hold back. I've found myself just pushing aside the person not getting it, and doing a job myself.

Rhett is a real funny young man, and a good worker/welder. And hats off to Matt and TomTom for letting him try the tricky weld. Got a 22 year old son and we work together at home on projects and regular work. The last 10 years I really had to learn to stay calm and let him try. Still learning every day but having a good relay with my son is so rewarding.

It took me a while to learn the "stand back and point" technique, and it was hard not losing my patience. I learned that I am able to ask them how they would do the job and compliment them on the idea they propose, then I proceed to give advice for modifications that would have a, "value added benefit". And for the most part, it is their idea. That means they get the pride of creation through the manifestation of an idea!

My dad never learned how to deal with his emotions or communicate his feelings, so as a result our relationship has always been very strained. My whole life the one thing I wanted to do was fix up a car with him. I didn't care if we would be changing the oil on a beater or doing a frame off restoration of a classic, I just wanted to have that connection with my father, especially as him getting a classic car encouraged my interest in cars. When I finally got my first got at 15 and it needed a bit of work before I got my license at 16, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity. But he would work on the car by himself, often at times when I was sleeping or doing school activities or he'd just go do it and not say anything. I still don't know if it was malicious or not, but the experience really set the tone for the second 15 years of our relationship from then on. I'm almost 30 now, and I see him once or twice a month and we get along pretty good. But any more than a day or two at a time, and he'll find a reason to ruin it. I'm very thankful I had a couple men in my life who recognized my dad's parenting, and took me under their wing and were father figures to me growing up. Anyways, I'm rambling. From my experience, I'd say just be patient with your son, and try to include him in projects. Don't just have him be a tool fetcher either. Being included in a project with your dad at that age, and really getting to be hands on is a pretty powerful confidence builder.

A couple tips when you want a full seal weld. Make sure you clean off any paint or anything that could become a contaminant in your weld. Contamination causes porosity which won't help with a seal weld. Second tip, grind your starts and stops and weld back over the end of the last weld. This will help promote full penetration and a proper seal rather than what is referred to as cold lap. I was also taught MIG is the worst process for a seal weld, TIG would be your best bet for success on a seal weld!

SUGGESTION about the grab bar: no matter how high you raise it above the roof, recess it at least 10" back from the back side of the cab, so it lets you use the roof as the seat and grab bar as the backrest of the chair(or securing cage-like surround bar). Basically, it goes up from corners, then bends backwards as deep as you require for enough seating comfort, then turns across the roof and finishes the same on the other side.

Also buildup of weld is like stacking contaminants, it's a merry-go-round of failure. 8's is the best MIG way I know, dig the leak and dig a dimple beside the leak, plug the leak and move to the dimple to finish the weld, so you don't get the "fisheye" over the leak that will perpetuate.

Hello Mat. Just to let you know of the pending trouble you are about to cause your shoulder joints. I was in the military for over 20 years. Different trials were carried out on steering systems as you are proposing. While your system might seem novel to you, or maybe you just want to be a stubborn old fox that won’t let go of your offset levers. After using the Bombi for just a couple of hours you will be sorry you ever thought about it. A jolt in your machine while pulling on one or worse still both in an emergency can and has in the past lead to you pulling your shoulder joint right out of its socket. If you want a novel, yet sensible way of steering you can easily fit remote mounted servos connected to the master cylinders that operate the servo with another master cylinder then they are piped to the respective brake chambers or slave cylinders. You have lots of room on the Bombi to mount them anywhere as they are piped from the standard master cylinders. Get the bore sizes right, ie small bore master cylinder to larger bore slave cylinder is equivalent to longer levers. This would mean very little force would be required by the operator even possibly with two short levers dash mounted. This would give much more space in the cabin giving a much easier entry or emergency exit from the Bombi. As your idea might appear good, just imagine having to strip your whole system out again because yourself or one of your amazing team dislocates one or the other shoulder. Lots of experience in trials and uses of such ideas should count towards your decisions on your rebuild. All the very best to you all and keep the great content flowing.

Seems to me in front of the drivers seat would be the best place for the brake handles..if you came up from the floor where they are now & above the floor a foot or so & then go drivers direction 90° or close to it...then 90 again above the feet & between the knees, then just short uprights..just above waste height would be a good setup..still keep the floor clean & free of obstacles, & get the sticks in a more ergogonomic position.?? Just A thought... might not even fit or work that way!!

Matt, I have been a certified welder as part of my aerospace testing work in mig stick and heliarc welding for some of your jobs like on the gas tank and other projects heliarc or as they say now tig would give you a lot cleaner weld with less chance of leakage and if done right no need to grind down a good looking weld. But the Bombi is starting to look very nice. Like your garage addition project also. That will really give you all some great working space. Nice to see the boys following in dad's footsteps. With these skills they learn they will never be without a job. Ok back to watching your video at 2 am. 👍👌

You should conect a vent hose on the top of the gas tank going side to side. The side with the fuel sender may no get full if it can't breathe. Maybe I missed some. But you could use the extra gas. Lol

Matt, Crazy thought, on the steering/breaking levers, if you put a third level between that an inch forward of the 2 existing levers that sticks up 5? inches higher and attach a crossbar that could pull back both levers when the center one is pulled you could have a one-hand full stop lever. With a little fancier fab work, you could even a locking mechanism to the third lever as an emergency/parking brake.

Doesn't matter how many gauges or sensors you install it still needs someone to interpret "E" as being representative of "EMPTY" rather than "ENOUGH"! Then that person has to take said tank/vehicle to the gas station, liberate the credit card and fill said tank to "F" which represents "FULL"! Thanks for the laughs and video. Is that tank not removable? Would be a lot easier to weld on the floor or bench. Regards from Canada's banana belt.🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🕊️🇺🇦🕊️🇺🇲👍

Welding a Gastank and similar is done great with WIG. Because you also can reflow an existing Weld and shut Pinholes OR you can add a material. Also the Weld is cleaner which is similar to less Pinholes. Another Option would be to solder it on (dont know the exact english term, hardsolder?). Fixed a Motobiketank this way.

Once at a fab shop in Illinois, a guy built a tank for coolant storage non-pressure, it was about 16' w X 20' long X 12' in height. The guy that welded all this together decided to check for leaks WITH AIR PRESSURE. The plate used was about 5/16" thick steel with varying gussets, interior baffles and corner bracing. Luckily another fabricator saw what he was doing and pull the plug while he was airing it up before the bomb went off.
