I just have a hard time comprehending how you guys get out of bed on the winter and take a bus or train to work??? What time you get up there and how long is a usual walk, train , bus etc to get to work, what time do most people work till and go to lunch and home? In California no snow, just rain, traffic ever. Day 5-6am to 4-6pm and drive to work and home. Don Los Angeles California

(father of two boys writing) 10:30 - keep that wall by any means! Space isn't all that counts. Your kids will need some privacy! If not now it will be in some years. I'm sure they both love their mum but they'll not be keen to have her walk through their room at any occasion. And you will never disturb their sleep when you get yourself a cup of tea late at night.

Hi Nastya: Interestingly I think this is one of your best videos because of the insights and perspectives it provides about Russian life in a big city in today’s Russia. I live in the open spaces of the high desert of the western USA and our lives could not be more different but I am fascinated with your story in part I think because of these differences. A suggestion(and you may already be sensitive to this): involve your sons especially your oldest in planning the apartment spaces.
@jameydupuy9280Ай бұрын
Yes! I think she may be involving them but that us very important. Boys definitely need to feel like they are contributing, even just in ideas. It helps them feel they have some input, control, and trust. Having raisedv3 boys, I really feel you need to keep that wall up for privacy for them. Bunk beds have all types of options now for small spaces. Although the apartment is not a tiny house, you could get some great ideas for your boys personal areas. I feel it us very important for them to have tgat door to close- all people want a sense of privacy.

If you take down the hallway wall, then I’d make the room at the back the kids room instead of your room. Then the big open space you are left with could be living room by day and your bedroom by night with a quality fold out bed. Kids would be snug at back and you have whole apartment to yourself in evening without disturbing them.

I would keep the kids room with the walls (just put up better/new ones), and that 'odd' space in the hall, turn that into a closet/storage space with a door (bi-fold doors). Also keep that little storage closet, to the right of the toilet room, and put in shelving all on the back wall......turn that into a pantry to store food in.....because your kitchen is so small. With such a small apartment those 2 storage spaces (in the hallway and new pantry)......you will NEED that storage space! The hallway closet......install a bar to hang clothes on hangers, maybe some shelves on the side walls and a 'bench' towards the bottom back wall to store shoes/boots on/under the 'bench'. Once you start putting furniture in a small apartment......it'll get even SMALLER. Anything that can be stored in the hallway closet.....will give you more space in the rooms.

The apartment has good bones for redesigning and renovating. I would rethink the idea of having your sons' room as a walk-through space. I doubt that will work out well for any of you. The little storage next to the front door: I would keep a door in it. On medium level a rack for coats, ground level for shoes/houseslippers and as much shelving as possible for seasonal coats/storage of odd things (gift wrapping, Christmas deco and such). You could even utilize the inside side of the door. I would try to make a decent boysroom out of the room you wanted as a living room/mum’s bedroom by downsizing that room and make a living room/mum’s bedroom out of the space that’s now the odd corner (perfect for build in wardrobe without looking like a wardrobe, you could utilize the full height so even store the bed linens in there) and intended boysroom. The windows are big enough for such change. And looking forward, the boys won’t be disturbed if you want to look television or have a guest over that needs to go through their room to enter/exit. You could even think about knocking down the wall to the kitchen, making a semi open kitchen. Then you wouldn’t need the door to the kitchen (where it is now) so you’d have two walls for things like a washing machine, oven, fridge, etc. A little dinerset with a bench (storage!) a table and two (or one) chair(s). A nice sofa that turns into a bed and you’d still have room for a cabinet, tv cabinet and a coffeetable. Windows on the balcony and you’d have a place to dry clothes and extra storage.
@LisaR-292 ай бұрын
The small space could even be a dining room leaving more space in the kitchen for storage and counter space. I’d keep it and use it for something just so the boys could have their own contained space.

Hi Nastya! What a great apartment you have here! Blank canvases are the best to make your own. With a little love & care its gonna look beautiful. I know, its none of my business, however cant help it to give you a piece of advice. If I were you, I wouldnt remove the wall that separates the room. Separate rooms are separate rooms ( with each of em having their own entering door, thats great ) Even kids need privacy. As they ĺl get older they may regret the "open space & my mums always going through my room" kinda thing. & the corridor place that is left is great for wardrobes built-in shelves etc. & if you consider the room too small for 2 kids you can always switch the rooms as they get older ( or from now on :D ) Either way., whatever you decide its up to you, & im sure it will turn out nice. Cant wait for the "before & after" video! Good luck with the renovation & take care! P.S. & keep that little door knob :) & the "winter fridge" - what a great thing, i wish our slovak apartments had this! ( not in my town, sadly, maybe in some old apartments in the capital )

I think you're going to make it lovely for your family. Thanks for pointing out the little historical details. It's hard to decide what to keep and go when you love an old building, isn't it? Go with your instincts on the layout. Commenters watching from a distance may not be aware that there are a variety of cultural norms, and home layout is one. This is your home. Your boys will grow older. Make it happy for you now. They have a great life with you. :)

just thinking that maybe make the small space, a little sitting room for somewhere cozy for all of you instead of joining the kids room ❤

Very courageous Nastya, You are fortunate to have a loving and doting mother and family support. I have enjoyed learning and seeing your world from a Russian mother's perspective. Thank you for sharing your life's journey with the KZbin World.
