As an instructor, I should explain ... We don't grade on EFFORT. Imagine you took your car into a repair shop to get a brake job. You pull out, hit the brakes and smash into a tree. You go back to the shop where the repairman tells you "I worked really hard on your brakes. It usually takes a hour, but I spent four hours. How can you complain?" This is the real world. Everyone doesn't get a trophy.

I never much cared for grades. The only thing that mattered to me was if I understood the material or not. It didn't matter if I had an A on everything prior to the final and if I only needed a 40 on the final to pass. I still study my butt off and do more problems to make sure that I learned the material and retain it. I know that not every student does what I do but are the bad students really this bad? If so then how did they make it to university? I just don't understand. Honestly though, I do consider myself a bad student. At least in math I am. The more math I take, the less I understand. I'm way more talented in the arts than I am in math to be honest. I chose to stick with mathematics because it was more challenging to me.
@callieparrish162710 жыл бұрын
I got accepted into Cornell's art program. They had a really nice financial package and I was on the verge of accepting it but chose not to accept it as I wanted to learn more about mathematics. Even though I originally majored in aerospace engineering at UT-Austin, I chose engineering because my father wanted me to be an engineer. Then I quickly changed to mathematics and have been in love with the subject ever since! Now that you've introduced me to quantum mechanics, I'm not so scared of chemistry and physics anymore. I am very greatful for you teaching me all that you have so far!

+PaintedDoll How about a professor who fails you at the last minute because even though you have an A average in the class, you failed to do two "optional readings"? Professors aren't always correct. He was chastised by the Dean of the College.
@larryquery509510 жыл бұрын
A professor who passes a student who was too lazy to learn delivers no service to that student by passing him/her. The student will just be a burden to the next professor, and the student will continue to struggle in those classes because they did not have the background necessary to pass those higher classes. If a student did not learn, if they are not ready for the next level, they should not be passed. In fact, many of those students dare blame their previous professors for "not teaching them" to be prepared to their current level of struggle. But they want to be passed at each level. Even though they know they haven't learned...

My lowest grade I'm fairly sure was a C, and that was because I am horrible in ELA. My most recent tests, I believe have been 100, 101, 95, 88, and 81. Even now I struggle to improve myself, but I try. And that is most of the battle. Autism doesnt help either. So, I would like to apoligize for my harsh wording and practically making this sound like a drama speech, but I just don't want to hear that excuse anymore.

Performance is the way to measure your level at anything...in school, the simplest and easiest way to analyze your level of intelligence or ability in a specific subject is through tests. You need to find a field you are good at performing in; that is the key.

LOL I have a friend that teaches at a community college. She tells me stories & have read few papers that students have turned in.One was an F that a student was contesting. That paper was so bad it was like a joke,like someone writing a joke paper to make fun of stupid people. This student had the nerve to not only turn it in but to contest the grade. Amazing what students nowadays think should pass. What is going on in HS nowadays that allows students this bad to graduate?

Students need to understand that there is not some fixed one-to-one ratio between time spent and grade earned. Instructors have an idea how much time an assignment should take, within a range of variation, depending on the student's previous competence and personal habits. But when you have a student complain: "I spent four hours rewriting this! Why have I still got a B?" when an assignment is designed to take about an hour, you have to explain, "If it took you four hours, something is wrong."

As a current Autistic 8th grader, I say hogwash. Freaking hogwash. I remember when I was in the 7th grade, I used to stay up until 2AM every night, never studied or did homework, and did horribly. The last grades I got were medical excuses and D's. I wanted to change that. About a few weeks ago, my grandfather died. On his deathbed, he said he was proud of my improving grades. I took it to heart. Every night now I do my homework. It helps alot.

Yes, however many things depend on teachers as well. For example, everybody used to study history in our class, but everyone hated chemistry. That's because the teacher of history knew, how to raise interest in pupils and the teacher of chemistry did his best to kill all the interest. If a pupil fails a subject, the teacher is more to blame in many cases.

It's amazing. At my high school, we have some really smart kids but if you are in an honors class they love you, if you are in a level 1 class you are ok, if you are in a level 2 class they don't give you a chance. I know that they are many smart kids that are in level 2 class, but because of the system,they will never become something else.

Some teachers do worry about this -- God forbid I should crush the motivation and joy of learning of this delicate little creature in front of me. News flash: it is your responsibility to keep up the motivation of the teacher to spend special interest and time on you. Don't be passive -- if a teacher grades you honestly and you don't like the grade, nothing makes him or her more interested in you than when you seek feedback and fight your own shortcomings, instead of wilting like a flower.

It's very strange, that you assume I'm a pupil. And perhaps the teachers try their best in the U.S.A, but that is not the case in the post soviet world. I can bet my head, that several teachers, that I had at school, didn't know their subject at all. And they demanded bribes from parents.
