(long geeking moment, sorry for the long comment XD) in the lore, ghoulification is done only by radiation, there are theories out in the fallout fandom of what he actually was fed and what he is actually becoming is theories to be something else, I'd love to get into it from someone who knows some(def not all) fallout game lore as a player, but im not sure how they are going to go about this and it might come off as spoilery since a S2 is already confirmed by now. It's worth noting that Max showed from the beginning when the squire first showed up that he has no idea how radiation actually works because he didn't even know that he could track the radiation from Cooper. if he actually knew how that stuff worked, I think Max would have noticed that something was off and this wasn't the work of ghoulification, but the confidence in him saying that he was a ghoul with his whole chest without knowing anything is funny to me XD I love that man lol like I know there is lore and more knowledgeable people out there with more accurate numbers and whatnot as to how much radiation it takes to ghoulify, but I believe it takes a lot more radiation than just living on the surface (at this point of time in the series) to turn ghoul, as far as we know and are concerned, the Squire had not yet been in extreme levels of radiation for a long enough period of time for such a thing to happen (if we were to entertain Maximus' confident theory that he is a ghoul and not that he took a random drug) and I don't think inhaling that amount that he did would cause such a huge change (if anything it would give him radiation sickness at most probably similar to how lucy got sick after being forced to drink random irradiated water before). as a player in the game Radiation does nothing but make you sick and damages/hinders the player more than help and heal (not without perks that you gain through leveling, which im not entirely sure how to interpret that into lore necessarily as it could just a mechanic you can have fun with if you play the game long enough, but it could be interpreted as living a long time of being hurt and in pain by the radiation before it begins helping in any way after presumably turning into something far different then the human you start the game as), so I can only assume the process of turning ghoul is a far cry of what we are seeing with the squire. there is also a possibility that they might tweak an existing detail from the fallout universe and make something somewhat new, considering they introduced this idea that ghouls need a certain kind of drug, or just a massive amount of drugs in general, to keep from going feral. that particular detail isn't really in the game lore. Though I suppose it could be argued in some cases we run into in the game that its *implied* indirectly that they heavily use drugs regularly, but it never specifically says they need such things to keep from going feral. at least from what lore I know about feral ghouls is it just can happen over time, or maybe it just will happen, but it comes at different times for different people, which just boiled down to genetics and their situation regarding their exposure whether it was one and done or something they actively live in or what ever the case may be. similar to how it's hit or miss that someone turns feral or not from the get go, some just turn straight to ferals, while others are left standing wondering why they weren't going mad yet and still relatively sane and not feral. like in that sense, it was kind of implied in the games as a draw of the hat kind of thing, you either run straight out the gate already feral, or you live to stay sane another day just to eventually succumb to the feral, or you live like Cooper sane but wonder day in and day out when it's going to be your turn. as far as I know, there is no cure to ghoulification, much less some kind of suppressant(?) to keep from going feral, there is no way to stop a ghoul from going feral that is known. even with taking in consideration of the time jump between the games to now, its not that far ahead in years from the games, but in the series they made it something that he seemed to actively been doing for a very very long time, insinuating that this suppressant drug or this technique to avoiding going feral has existed long before the games which is the least cannon detail I think in this series. I hope talking about the game lore that I know of didn't come off as spoilery, I just really love this universe and love watching someone else enjoy it and have fun watching it while also being invested and curious about the world.
