I was listening to The Beatles Naked Podcast this week, and they mentioned reaction videos on KZbin. They commented on how amazing it must be to hear the Beatles for the first time. Then they specifically mentioned a young woman who did The White Album in two parts. I'm pretty sure they were talking about you, Caroline. 🙂 Take a rest. We'll be here when you "get back". 😉

Are you looking for advices to your next videos, Caroline? I think you've started fine with the Beatles albums impressions. An idea: Impressions of 60's big hits on the back then charts? Not the number ones really, but what was "au courant" back then.

I'm only 47 years old but I'm saying this in my best Grandpa voice, "You're a lovely young lady Caroline"! Your Beatles reactions were great. Genuine, honest and informative. You didn't pretend to be anything you're not. Very few reaction videos are by the musically trained. You went the extra mile. And the 1%? I assume mostly my age or older without the insight to realise that someone of your age has had a billion more songs at their disposal than they ever had without the need to ever even tune into a radio station. Quite easy to believe you never heard the Beatles just like plenty of other Beatles reaction people your age. Besides you admitted it when you had heard a track. One last thing. There's no rush. Your album is on the learning curve of the next album, and don't worry about KZbin maintenance. Your subscribers will still be there after you ever need a break. Speaking of which.... Break a leg :)

Not only do we understand, many of us have been where you are. It gets better. You're incredibly sensitive and that's a very good thing, don't let anyone tell you different. But that same sensitivity that makes you unique must also be nurtured and treated as a fragile instrument. You're a gifted interpreter above all other things. Maybe you haven't considered developing your presentation skills because you've learned them along the way. Take as long as you need to recharge those creative batteries. You're audience will be there for you when you're ready to return.

As an old geezer with a creative side, I'm going to note that I have lots of ideas for amusing stuff to put up on KZbin, but I can't imagine finding the time to do it, if it weren't my source of income. And I was very surprised that you have no formal musical education, so I guess you must be doing something there right. If you're as serious as you seem to be, you definitely want to find a voice teacher -- they know things you can't know, and hear things you probably can't hear. You might also invest in software that lets you see your vocal pitch while you're singing. And keep in mind that you've undertaken all of this during one of the most stressful and isolating extended events our civilization has experienced in the last hundred years. As we come out of it the other end, spending less time wandering the weird hallways of the virtual world seems more than reasonable. And finally, I'll repeat something I wrote in your Community channel, after your abbey road clip: *** I'm gonna be a contrarian here, and suggest that instead of going on to the solo albums you take a year to go back and really listen to those Beatles albums. Find a good friend, preferably but not necessarily one with whom cuddles are an option, and spend some Saturday afternoons just lying around on the floor *listening*. More than with any other of these reactions, when this one ended I thought, "Please, just 'put the needle' back on track one and listen to the album again, right now." Because that's what *we* did. (and what I'm about to do.) In fact, if you'd done that and recorded it, and doubled the length of this reaction, I probably would have watched it. But when you do get around to the solo work, don't skip Wings Over America, the live triple album.

Your Beatles reactions are THE BEST!! I'd love to see you react to The Beatles movies in order! A Hard Days Night, Help, Yellow Submarine, and Get Back. Their solo albums are a mixed bag and not at the level of The Beatles, but their 1st couple of albums to '71 are very good and would be worth listening to and reacting to the differences between them and to see how they embarked on their post Beatle careers... Specifically, McCartney (1970) Paul's one man band largely homemade recording, John Lennon Plastic Ono Band (1970) John's deeply emotional release, All Things Must Pass (1970) George's mammoth release of heartfelt songs showing he had arrived as a great song writer in his own write, RAM (1971) Paul's first real studio effort, and Imagine (1971) John's classic anthem. I think you would find those movies and those albums interesting and I think we would all agree that we'd love to see your reactions to them!!

But yeah, like most here I came for the Beatles reactions and stayed for the analysis, music and the sheer joy of watching her on-screen personality, which is joyous. She has a real gift for this sort of thing, the camera loves her, her voice is outstanding, and it would be a real shame if she quite making these videos even though of course it would be perfectly understandable if they were just too much for her to take on.

Taking time off is sometimes simply just what we need. Still, I realize “the algorithm” ™ is not so understanding. I know from experience working 40 hours a week, working on a graduate degree while teaching part time on the side while trying to sustain a long term relationship that sometimes the only viable path is a break to decompress until you’re in a place to re-assess. What follows is long but I think worth a read. I’ve been a college instructor and my own pursuits are on the creative side… so everything below comes from a place of empathy and experience. I’m not a KZbinr. One I follow, though, has had a very similar struggle in many ways. I’m not going to say what you “should do” but I can adapt what he’s done to your own material (I loathe the word “content”!). Keep in mind I’m just brainstorming a short term stop gap idea. One thing that you can I’m the meantime is bank a number of less time-consuming videos that might still appeal to this Beatles audience you’ve grown that builds on your own music. My thought is to talk about some of your music in the context of how The Beatles may have affected what you’ve done or how you see similarities or departures. It gives you the chance to talk about (and therefore keep your music out front) in a context that will keep those viewers engaged. I’m sure this can be done in a way where you select maybe four songs of yours. You know them inside out. They are your passion. You don’t need to “explain the song” (speaking as a writer, I know what a bad idea that is!). But you can share some of what you’re proud of in an arrangement or a melody for a few minutes and then spend a minute about a song from your recent series that you feel has a basis for related discussion. I’m saying this as someone who doesn’t himself need Beatles content to keep me subscribed and all that. I’m saying it as someone aware of the trickiness of maintaining an audience. Since you have all the tracks laid out, you can share the joy and stress of the creative process, the pressure of living up to a standard. The sort of thing that’s autobiographical enough that it shouldn’t be too time-consuming to assemble. If you can create one a day every other day or two for a week then you’d have enough for a month off while still having conte… material to feed the algorithm and see if you can converge/convert your audience. During that time off, let yourself not think about KZbin (as much as possible). If an idea pops in your head, write it in a note file for later. If inspiration of any sort swells (not necessarily for KZbin) then pursue it to whatever degree it feeds you - and stop when it feels like it’s feeding ON you. Okay. Enough rambling. I’d edit this but KZbin on iPhone makes that a misery. I do hope you made it all the way to the end and I hope that even if this idea doesn’t work for you, maybe it sparked a better idea of your own. If not that… I hope at least it feels better that this (and other) text-based strangers care enough to offer you unsolicited advice! Above all, be kind to yourself.

I listened to Meet The Beatles album over and over, I was 3 going on 4 at the time and I was hooked. Sgt. Pepper was first album I bought with my own pop bottle money with no other help from parents. Got earlier albums as gifts mostly or mom helping. I know you just discovered them but never too late to become a Beatles fan. While you're taking a break from KZbin, I think you should watch The Beatles movies in chronological order. They are entertaining to watch as well as listening to. My first thought when listening was "How do you replenish your own energy?" because everything you're describing is drawing on your energy -- so where do you feed or nurture yourself? There has to be an ebb and flow. I've always found fallow periods necessary in order to grow, but there's something to be said for some sort of nurturing practice that can replenish you on a daily basis so that you're not driven to a state of creative exhaustion. Balance, always a tricky proposition. Something with a kind of meditative bent. I prefer doing something physical like walking or yoga, but there are other methods you might prefer.

Making music is it's own reward. I've been playing, writing and recording music for over 45 years. Never got famous or rich, but music has kept me joyous and fulfilled in a way perhaps nothing else could. We each have a path to tread, pitfalls to overcome and sanctuaries to find for our rest and healing. Follow your path, young lady, and god speed.

Burnout is a real thing. My day job involves scripting and editing videos for corporates and for years, I thought I'd be able to juggle my own KZbin channel on the side. I'm so burnt out, I haven't posted a single original video there in 8 years. Don't be like me. Take that break

Same for me. I got to quit my job (janitor in a homeless shelter) after a full two-year working and as a result a burnout. Nobody in my family understands why I am taking a break after two months of job research.

It is your 'free time' that has created the beautiful person I see before me. To neglect yourself in order to please us would be a terrible decision. Take as much time as you need to learn the things you need to accomplish your goals. Your trip through the Beatles was wonderful... I enjoyed every minute of it. As for female composers, the piano music of Clara Schumann is (inmho) better than her famous husband Bob.

Hi Caroline, firstly thank you for the Beatles uploads I am the biggest Beatles fan and loved your take and insights so thank you. I strongly recommend that if you can find it watch Howard Goodalls two programmes he made one on the Beatles, one is about generally writing songs but he did a special on Sgt Pepper which I think you would love to watch. That aside please look after yourself and take whatever time you need, when you look back I am sure your own album and song writing will be more important, we love your channel we are not suddenly going to leave because you take some me time. It's a struggle to do everything you want and look after yourself but from time to time you simply need to put yourself first and recharge the batteries. Look after yourself and the best of luck with the album. Tim x

Unfortunately, your albums premiers at 5:30am my time. So I probably won't be there live. But I'm fascinated to see what you made. As for the direction of your channel, you say you don't know a lot of theory, but your analysis was still really good. Maybe check out Nahre Sol or Aimee Nolte music for a couple of female KZbinrs/musicians who do deep dives on theory and music history but manage to keep it entertaining? I imagine you could churn out reaction after reaction to classic albums and get a ton of views, but your first priority should be your health and self-fulfillment. We'll still be here whether you're gone for a month or a year.

Listen Caroline..your very young and obviously talented with a sweet nature, not cynical or crude and these are very endearing traits in these harsh times..it’s natural for someone of your age group to be undecided about EXACTLY what they want to be or do in life hence the juggling act!…you WILL find your niche and you WILL succeed as you already have judging by the genuine caring comments you receive, I’m an older man with grown up sons and daughters and I’d be proud to have a daughter like you..take a deep breath, take stock..and put your best foot forward! Best regards. 💙

I've been a professional musician for 30 yrs. and played through so many burnt out times to pay the rent. Covid has done wonders for me and my wife not playing for 2 yrs. now. Took a whole year off and started recording (which I didn't have time for) and I'm getting re-centered. Take a break you'll come back stronger. I'll be looking for you in your return. I would like to add if you want to take your music to professional performance level take a course on self employment so you understand what you're getting into. Like, no holidays (especially weekends when your friends are off), always on call, playing when sick and money management.

You do sound overwhelmed here... a couple of thoughts... 1. simplify 2. journal, journal, journal - alway carry a journal and do not fail to take notes 3. whatever path you choose make sure to have fun and build community 4. it's the journey not the destination - i know a lot of materially poor artists who are spectacularly spiritually fulfilled and happy.. 5. don't chase the money - chase your creative side 6. compromise as little as possible but sometimes it is necessary (other voices are good too) 7. have integrity in all things 8. many successful musicians can't read lick of music (at least at first) 9. the hardest thing to look at is a blank canvas or page... but start anyway, anywhere 10. keep writing, keep writing... try to journal or write EVERY DAY... even on vacation 11. look for inspiration in the 'little things'... 12. believe in yourself and your mentors... 13. don't settle for in action 14. 'lay fallow' for a bit at times... notice, orient yourself, learn self hugs... you will find champions and fans..

Your Beatle reaction videos are great. I have just two thoughts for you as you pursue your own music: 1 - Collaborate. I don't think either Paul or John would have made a go as solo artists to start off with. The fusion of their ideas, the contrasts and harmonies all fused together to make wonderful music. Even the best solo artist I know collaborated with other good musicians to make their best music. 2 - If you do return to doing reaction videos, I don't think persuing all the Beatle solo works would be nearly as interesting. That being said, since you seem to like many of Paul's works, just for fun I would point you to some of his solo works that I liked: Maybe I'm Amazed, Junk, Another Day, My Brave Face (which seems to be more about his breakup with the Beatles than a woman), and Beautiful Night. Go Caroline! I expect to see more good stuff from you - wherever it is!

Agreed on collaboration, even if only for certain projects. I'd also suggest performing with others, even if only on an occasional and informal basis. Although I'm not a musician, while I generally prefer working alone, I've found that with the right partners collaboration can be very satisfying and a good learning and growth experience. There's also mentors, who can be very helpful. I think this is especially important with women, who are still at a disadvantage in terms of where our culture and society are, and having more experienced people to occasionally turn to or lean on can he helpful. As for future reaction videos, I find it hard to believe that she won't do it again. I agree that there's no need to react to Beatles' solo albums, especially given how many there are. But reacting to a handful of classic songs by each former Beatle might be interesting. But there's just so much great music out there in so many genres and eras that it's just silly to stick to Beatles-related music. For instance, I'd love to hear here react to New Wave and other 80's bands. Or classic 70's bands like the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Boston, etc. And of course all those wonderful female singer-composers like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Sarah McLaughlin, Sheryl Crow, Adele, Neko Case, KT Tunstall, Taylor Swift, etc.

I know exactly what you mean, I feel that every time I'm faced with a decision of what path I want to take my options narrow, and it becomes stressful - what do I want to do? Take your time with what you want to do, and do the stuff that makes you happy. I would actually love to see some videos about female composers, there are lots of great ones out there that need more love. I'll always be here to watch! Good luck with the album release, I can't wait.

Recognizing and accepting the need to scale things back when you realize that so many projects might be too much - I think that's a borderline superpower. Not only will you get a mental break, but the future of your music and channel will become clearer as well!
