41:05 - "Comet Punch" is actually Meteor Mash, as that was the Japanese name for the move, as opposed to our Comet Punch which is "Consecutive Punch". As to why Mewtwo knows Meteor Mash, well I don't have any answers for you.

Looking at why you managed to 1 shot Kyogre with Confusion, I suspect entries after 150 restart the Kanto Pokedex. Using this theory, Kyogre's 198 would correspond to National Dex 48, which would be Venonat. Which would make sense to get 1 shotted by confusion. I initially speculated that the count would reset after 151, but that would make Kyogre match up with Parasect, which would probably not die in 1 hit to confusion. Just a guess on my part. But I think there's a fair chance of this. Another possibility could be that Kyogre was actually Murkrow, but the Dark type hadn't actually been implemented, and the presence of an absent type resulted in it just being instantly killed.

I don't speak Chinese, but the writing is similar enough to Japanese that I can make out a meaning from some of the words, and some of the Pokémon names are hilarious. Most of the Pokémon names seem to just describe the creature rather directly, like Torchic being 火鸟 (Fire bird). But then there are some that I personally find really funny. Examples include: Oddish: 走路草 - Walking grass Skarmory: 巨鸟 - giant bird Marill: 水鼠 - water rat Machop: 腕力 - arm power Makuhita: 笑熊 - laughing bear Skitty: 小松鼠 - little squirrel Other translation notes: - It looks like the move Baltoy used at 30:17 was called 吹飞 which to me looks very similar to 吹き飛ばす meaning whirlwind - At 41:05 the Tropius probably used Meteor Mash. The Japanese name for that move is Comet Punch, so it's likely a direct translation. - 42:00, this move name is exactly the same as Japanese 絶対零度, which is Sheer Cold.

Honestly, Sheer Cold should've been translated to English as Absolute Zero. Sadly the 12 character limit on attacks inhibited that at the time but still really neat.

I don't think that Absolute Zero is a concept that immediately makes sense to most children, whilst the Chinese/Japanese equivalent of 絶対零度 is a lot more intuitive, because it's much more clearly referring to temperature. Sometimes localization isn't about giving exact translations, but finding ways to communicate ideas in different regions where the direct translations of those concepts might not be fitting or accurate. It's worth remembering that even the same words in different languages can still have subtly different meanings, so adaption in localization is inevitable.

There's probably a gen2 bootleg that nobody's ever heard about since they used gen2 Pokedex numbers. And I think why it's easier using the gen 1 and 2 Pokedex is because all they have to do is change the sprite instead of everything. I still don't think it saves that much time tho lol.

There is a Gen 2 NES bootleg. It’s absolutely GARBAGE but it *is* Gen 2. From what I’ve heard, the Gen 2 version came first, then Gen 1, then Yellow (???) and so on and so on There’s even a HeartGold version.

There is a Bootleg NES Port of Pokemon Red that's developed by Mars Producion and published by Waixing Education Technology and you may need VirtuaNES 'cause I'm unsure if BizHawk, FCEUX, NEStopia, and Nintaco can run it. I'm waiting for the Legends Arceus Nuzlocke.

Not really. They were developed by completely different companies. Bootlegs are full of inconsistencies because there is no central authority like a licensor keeping watch and making sure there is some semblance of consistency. Over here even if completely different developers take on a project compared to a previous, there are things that will feel familiar between them because the licensor enforced it (whether it produced a good game or not). Instead they are either writing things from scratch, or heavily modifying/butchering an official release. Pokemon Yellow NES seems to have been by a developer that actually wanted their audience to experience the games that would never be officially released in the country. This one seems like it's by a developer that wrote it as a cash-grab on recognition of a popular trademark (which is what most trademark laws try to avoid)

The Gen 4 Demake is quite interesting from the little I've played of it. It's actually based on Platinum rather than Diamond and Pearl, suggesting a release date of at least 2008. It seems to be made by the same people who made this game, but the entirety of Sinnoh seems to be present. Unlike this game, someone was actually working to translate that one, though I'm not sure where that went...

Wait, if I'm understanding this right, it's Hoenn dex # that corresponds to the National dex # but uses the National mon's gen 2 learnset? That conversion is so weird. Interesting that you get Johto mons in part 3. As for the Kyogre Murkow thing, maybe Dark isn't immune to Psychic here? I would be interested in seeing this recreated as a gen 3 romhack. Keep the sprites the same as in Ruby and Sapphire, but adjust the typing, learnsets and I'm guessing the base stats as well. I'm not sure how you would remove the other status conditions besides Poisoned, or how you figure out what the power of moves like Sing, Supersonic, Hypnosis,Thunder Wave, powder moves, etc should be, but I'm sure it's possible. I also don't know how you remove berries and the held item mechanic, but I'm sure it's not difficult as removing data is usually an easier thing to do. I understand the reason for this has to do with language barriers, but how do you mess it up like this? They clearly got the correct information for the Kanto pokemon, down to learnsets, typing and even catch rate (the last one requiring more technical knowledge to figure out.) but didn't look at any pictures to see that it wasn't the correct pokemon? This game is one of the strangest things I've seen. Both this and the Yellow bootleg have good looking sprites as well. I really enjoyed your use of species clause. The only time where the same species are not actually part of the same evolution line.

I wanted to assume that the counter restarts after 150, but #48 (the remainder after subtracting 150 from 198) lands on Venonat. It would absolutely wipe it out in one confusion, but it should say super effective, so that can't be it.

Not exactly a game, but still official and obscure: the Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes anime intro (aka black and white japanese anime intro) is in a Japan only Wii U exclusive Just Dance game (Just Dance Wii U). It hasn't been officially released internationally or outside of the Wii U tho. So maybe a video on Pokemon in various rhythm games (e.g. Taiko, Just Dance) could be nice

I'm very curious to know what the pokemon beyond 151 correspond to! I think the biggest lead from your videos was Metagross using poison gas. So it's probably a poison type that learns that by level up in gen 2. Maybe in your replays you have more instances of pokemon beyond 151 using moves that could give away where their data is pulled from

Chinese here，kou dai yao guai and shen qi bao bei are two popular translation of pocket monster in China.kou dai yao guai is more of a direct translation as koudai means pocket and yaoguai means monster, there is also another translation chong wu xiao jing ling.

those three are unofficial tho as nintendo never given an official Chinese translation of pokemon until they added Chinese for first time in sun and moon released in 2016. BTW the official translation is 精灵宝可梦（jing ling bao ke meng），jing ling means fairy/monster and bao ke meng resemble the pronunciation of pokemon in English

Not exactly obscure, just a not very known ROM Hack / Pokemon fan-game but I'd love to see a nuzlocke of Pokemon Dreams. There aren't a lot of videos about it and it has a semi-interesting story with some cool Fakemon. You could choose to limit yourself to the Fakemon if you want so you don't get a whole bunch of normal Pokemon encounters but it would be up to you.

How could you get around the lack of rare candies in the game code? Directly setting levels is no good if you want the whole level-up process applied, but maybe you could directly set Pokémon's _experience_ before each fight to make them level up from the fight xp?

These games were something…For your own sanity since you lost a lot of the modern convinces you could of lessened the difficulty rules I mean you are playing a game in a totally foreign language. Always enjoy the content as usual! Good luck with the next project
