Many here on KZbin buy cars from the auction sight unseen. I've done this too but in this video, I show you why you shouldn't. I'll show you an M3 that I almost overpaid for and we fix a twin-turbo BMW that just came from the auction. It's a total basket case and in LegitStreetCars fashion, I break down the true cost of purchasing the BMW and what it took to fix it. I'm looking for a 335I with a manual and has to be a coupe. It can't be perfect or heavily modified. I prefer one that's cheap because it's broken or has high mileage. Basically, a car that I can make videos with. Email me at legitstreetcars@gmail.com

The upside of having to do those repairs and being all in at $9000 is you know what you have and you know it's sorted. You could spend $9000 and then find out it needs another $1000 or $1500 in repairs.

Chris Matej this is so wrong. Many idiots buy these cars and just immediately start banging off the limiter and start complaining when shit breaks. These cars aren’t cheap in comparison to say a toyota but they don’t have to be wallet breakers. The key is to fix things immediately, you can’t just ignore things on these cars. Next thing is to learn how to fix things yourself, $10k in repairs can easily become $3k if you diy. As an N54 owner (E92 6spd manual, alpine white on coral red) i’ve seen to many people buy cars with these engines and just immediately go with MHD. Fix the oil leaks, if it’s the original valve cover, replace it, the gasket and upgrade the PCV valve to kinda help with blowing out seals. Replace the coolant flange with an aluminum one, probably the water pump, thermo and some hoses. Install an oxwerkz crank seal plate. From there you should be fine if injectors are in working order/turbos aren’t blown. Even with all that stuff I mention (and if you buy brand new injectors/turbos) you could still be below $15k on these cars, which if you ask me is perfectly fine. These engines will run 200k+ with proper care, and not many cars are as fun 🤷🏻‍♂️ all about what you want out of your car and what you’re willing to do to make it happen.

I feel ya, Alex. I've been bitten a couple of times. I've learned that if an auction listing says, "runs and drives", there's about a 50% chance that it doesn't. Just recently, I bought a first gen Xterra for $800 from Copart because I need the engine, ECM and harness. I specifically looked for "runs and drives". When I went to pick it up, hooked up the jump box and nothing. Has a "difference of key" code, which means the NATS is killing the ignition. The key isn't a Nissan key, so there's no way it ever ran in their possession.

Do a 335i instead, although I like the M3 more it’s such a pain with throttle actuators, vanos pump, rod bearings. The N54 can make about 750whp on the stock block. The only thing you have to worry about is the pistons, they’re cast. The rest of the internals are forged, throw a set of pistons in it and shoot for 900+. Stock turbos are going to max out at around 19-20psi. Should put you in the mid 400swhp range. Make sure it’s manual also, the stock automatic transmission can’t really go over 400hp, it’ll be a ticking time bomb.

335i is a mess on track / in corners. Has open diff, and shitty suspension geometry from factory. The M3 of the same generation really only has two major flaws, rod bearings & throttle actuators. All in all might as well upgrade the turbos or go single turbo get the index 12 injectors along with BMP port injection and plug the head ports along with a stage III plus fuel system with dual Walbro 450 bucketless pumps, VRSF 7.5” race intercooler, VRSF charge pipe, M3/4 coilpacks, M3 front control arms and rear end.

He needs to replace the charge pipe as those go bad all the time and crack as they are plastic. $100 The coolant system tends to go hot so coolant boost. $10 Oil cooler thermostat lower temp or oil cooler thermostat bypass (FTP or BMS) $20-25 The N54 has the carbon build up so a oil catch can helps. Also a nice flush in the motor does good and switch from the factory 5w-30 to 5w40 or 0w-40. The hydraulic lifters like a thicker oil and helps with temperature control. Most shops use Motul 8100 x-cess. The car is great, has a few cheap design issues. This is why I started leasing my BMWs starting in 06 after a few e36s and two e39 540s. My first lease was actually a 07 335i sedan with the sport pack. 40k problem free miles besides the high pressure fuel pump that was a known problem. It was basically ticking time bomb and it went at around 16k miles... I hit a pothole and I lost power steering... I forgot what one had to do with another though. 335i coupes and sedans were one hell of a car, when BMW announced it I knew I had to have it and I love sleeper sedans so it was perfect for me in 07... it was a badass car then and still is.

Once worked in a mechanic's shop where the owner drank too much to pay attention to what was happening in the shop. He hired a 15yo kid to do oil changes...on about the 4th car the kid did, he drained the engine, poured 4 quarts of engine oil into the transmission, collected money from the customer & off the customer drove. An hour later, here comes that same Subaru behind a tow truck. Our insurance company had a big ol' payout to do on that one.

I bought the very same 335i but black in 2016 with 86k miles on it. I was lucky, the car was well maintained with no issues. I started doing a lot of preventive maintenance and then tuned to stage 2 (downpipes, charge pipe with Tial BOV, MHD flash, Eldor coils, etc.). Now I know a lot about this particular model and this engine. If I were you I'd definitely replace both turbos with a new one with an upgraded wastegate, that is the only way to get rid of rattle and low boost. I'd spend $1.2k for a new set of injectors (index 12), it worth it. I wouldn't change only the gasket but rather change the whole valve cover, it's plastic and may easily crack very soon. I'd also replace the oil filter cap which also cracks often and the coolant tank. And of course, the water pump, if it was already replaced at around 60-80k then it means you'd better replace it again now. HPFP should have been replaced by BMW on these models, but low pressure pumps also often fail. If you plan to make more boost I'd recommend you replace the chain, you'll have to replace the gasket so why not replace the chain.

I bought a used 2007 328xi, wagon, 6-speed manual in 2016 for CDN$13,500. It had the sport package consisting of different steering wheel, nicer seats and staggered wheels/tires, 205 front and 225 rears, like the 335is had. Great car, all wheel drive, really good on gas but it was a pig on repairs! Cost me $5k in 2 years of ownership. I sold it out of desperation but it was a pretty rare car. In the Canadian market, you couldn't get a 335 wagon. Then, they stopped with the manuals, too. I miss it, but I don't miss the repair bills! If it had the 335 engine, maybe I would have kept it, despite the repairs.

It is very interesting to read the different comments to these vids. When I buy a car, I usually intend to keep it for a while. A while can mean 10 years or 25+ years. You can guess, I do not buy many cars. When I buy a car, the most important part is that the body is in immaculate condition. I always take my paint thickness gauge. All technical components including the entire engine can always be replaced, but you cannot replace the OEM paint job. Well, you can, but it is not going to be OEM then. Second interesting thing is to read all that stuff about repairs on German cars. I never had German cars until I moved to the US (in fact in Germany I only had Swedish cars). In the US I was not able to find some good examples of Swedish cars. I tried to buy domestic US, but that just was not possible due to the crappy interiors! Not sure whether it is the poor quality of the US interiors (check the previous vid with escalade door cover!!!) or people being reckless. In the US you pretty much seem to have to buy German to get a reasonable interior in a used car (or maybe Swedish, but I was not successful at that). Otherwise it is all totally worn out (or was already horrible when new in the first place!).

During this time, needed to do water pump/thermostat, valve cover gasket, plugs/coils, oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and charge pipe replacement (aftermarket). Not including regular maintenance like oil changes, brakes, tires, belts, etc. Throw on some mods like exhaust, charge pipe + BOV, intake, and you can make some real race car noises.

I had a 2009 335i X-drive manual coupe with Burger Motorsports JB5 piggy back computer, dual cone intakes, muffler delete, and VRSF intercooler (factory intercooler heat soaks quickly). That car was probably making in the neighborhood of 400whp and maybe 430lb/ft of torque. It was an absolute rocket! I'd recommend a 2008-2010 as those had the twin turbo N54 and not the single turbo N55. The 2007 model year had some engine management issues that made it less desirable.

Alex if you're modifying it where you're ultimately going to run into a wall is the high pressure fuel pump. I think the guys making 5-800ish on the N54 end up running meth or port injection. I've heard a lot of good things about Doc Racing so check out their single turbo kits if you're planning to go crazy. I think the go-to for a fast daily 500ish for an upgraded turbo is Pure Turbos
