Ozone 10 in verse 2 was a mess for me... The guy that mastered for $100 seems to know very well how to do the job, it seems that he used multiband processing (everything seems to be in its place) and the good use of compressors also because when it comes soft or hard transients in the track, the song doesn't get ruined. Mastering is about listening to the song and analize it so you can think what you can add to it (or clean) to make it sound better (and remember that one reference track is important). Mastering is not simply make it sound louder.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! Did you watch the end where I tone matched the $100 master on Ozone? Pretty impressive! This is definitely more of a plug-in breakdown than a detailed how to master video but I do believe ozone is extremely powerful and can make an equivalent master, cheers!

@@matnetik Yeah! That was really impressive! the strong point of iZotope is their AI technology, (that's the reason I mentioned the reference track!). Still... I think you should do some manual adjustments for less distortion. I think will go for Komplete 14 Standard, so Ozone Standard is included... and after that I will upgrade maybe to Advance version. I think Ozone advance is still worth the money! You can imagine how expensive can be to pay $100 for each of your songs!!!

you say it yourself "after I tone-matched it ha" . So in the end , you need an engineer to show the way by creating something worth “tone matching” so you know what to tone match to in the first place. I am sure that automated mastering is around the corner and its inevitable. But while this will be sufficient for 95% of people , i am thankful that the 5% exists. Mastering is not only polishing a mix. In this case you seem to be skilled in mixing. This makes mastering afterwards a lot easier. There are cases though where you get really bad mixes or at best "ok-good" . This is where an engineer shines. He-She will tell you (random example) "I find the snare is 5db too loud in the mix" and you will have the chance to address it in the mix. If you cant then a good engineer will address this snare before moving forward. Other example "is the pumping intended ? if not , you overdid it with the sidechain" . In my experience automated mastering is great when you have a solid mix and is not quiet there when you feed it a bad mix. I believe a good engineer can still get more out of a medium quality mix than automated mastering can do. Also an engineer will offer you feedback that helps you get better. Having said all that , mastering is also an aesthetic approach. Like art. Music is art. One example would be that you need to take in account human performance when working on a mix of live musicians. See what every passage and each instrument wants to say. Not overdo it. Things like this. Not only "tighter" "louder" "transients" if that makes sense. Ozone and the likes have come a long way. It was never easier and more affordable for people to have good quality tools that are also affordable.

it's concerning to me when someone defines a better master as the louder master and uses really fluffy language to describe the tools they use, when you were speaking about impact and soft clip, or even the stabliser you were quite off the mark. also the mastering assistant is meant to be used as an ASSISTANT as in you give it material, It recommends asjustments and the engineer takes them into consideration. you didn't loudness match anything, to our ears anything that's louder sounds better but when it's released on streaming platforms it's normalised to the level of other songs it'll just sound overcompressed, preserving dynamic range is essential to mastering, now what that means depends on alot of things but you should be seeking to preserve the dynamics of the material. even just listening to you talk about these things it's clear that you don't really understand what mastering is or the tools that are used and how to use them. you don't have to be an expert in all aspects of sound but when your trying to educate a bunch of people who don't know better all your doing is mis-informing them and creating bad habits they will have to unlearn in future.
@matnetik
@matnetik Жыл бұрын
Hey there, last thing I want to do is misinform people! My goal is always to educate and share my process. I mentioned in the beginning that I am by no means a mastering engineer. The goal was to see what the Ozone Assistant can do - I also mentioned this is a great starting point and having the ability to adjust the settings the what makes Ozone great! As far as what the modules can do, I got the information from the website, I did say the stabilizer detail backwards and it’s been mentioned in the comments so I do apologize for that! I also did do a follow up to compare loudness here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHnTdmmInZ2gkLs The point of this video was to compare some Fiverr masters to an Ozone assistant master which is why I didn’t show “how to master”. I do appreciate the feedback and will make sure to be more clear in future videos with explaining the point of the video and how the tools properly function! And good note on how steaming services compress the sound! Cheers!
@memeswillneverdie
@memeswillneverdie Жыл бұрын
@@matnetik streaming services don’t compress the sound, they normalise, it means taking the integrated LUFS of the file and comparing it against their target then simply attenuating the signal, for instance if your file comes in at -12 LUFS it will be reduced by 2db, the over compressed sound I mentioned was from yourself overcompressing to get it loud and when it’s compared against other more dynamic material it’ll sound weak when played back at the same level. As far as the modules, I can link you a couple of the research papers that detail how the maximiser and impact modules work. If your using the mastering assistant because you don’t know what your doing then you shouldn’t be mastering (not you specifically but you in the sense of anyone) Mastering requires a deep understanding of your tools and an even more refined ear. If you don’t understand something then you should be hesitant when using it. Your information about the soft clipper especially was just flat out wrong, soft clipping really just rounds off the ends of the wave after the threshold unlike hard clipping which simply sheers off the wave creating something similar to a square wave, soft clipping by its very nature introduces distortion but unlike hard clipping it can be perceived as more pleased (a mixture of 2nd and 3rd order harmonics are produced but primarily 3rd order) The impact module and maximisers are actually extremely fascinating, look for the patent for the IRC and as for impact it is a dynamics process that isn’t dependent on a threshold by using an average LDR taken using the crest factor of the signal in order to process the micro dynamics of the signal, also it has compression and expansion (up is expansion, down is compression) I understand your not trying to convince people your a mastering engineer which is great I and everyone else appreciates transparency but with the way these things are being described it just makes me despair simply because social media is full of so much bad mixing and mastering advice and such fluffy nonsense, especially with mastering, having a deep and scientific understanding of the tools you use is essential to achieving your intended results. So I don’t doubt that you are able to do good in the audio industry as far as education but please be extra mindful of the information you put out there, if your wanting to give advice on mastering you should really do extensive research on the topic or get a working mastering engineer to comment on the subject, I myself am not a musician (I love drums but not at a more than competent level) so it would be the equivalent of me talking about what guitar is better, unless I can demonstrate that my information is correct it could be harmful to those coming into guitar trying to get a grasp of it.

If you listen to the Kick, in the raw mix it's really nice like a basketball, has life in it. EVERY Master here sounds so different to the original. That's not what Mastering should be. Yes, if you just make it louder, you kill the nice Basketball Transient From the kick. So you have to make it louder like a PRO or just leave the raw mix. But the 100$ at least is more balanced in frequency, not that muddy and has more depth...

Hello, a point about comparison methodology; humans are biased, one of our bias is the loudness bias. That mean louder always seems to sound better. Take 2 identical track. Low a track by 1dB; when compared the louder will sound better every time. So, to compare sounds, they have to be level match. Without matching comparaison is biased., it’s the principle of the loudness war. Loudness is mesures with Lufs. To be objective the levels in lufs should have been match at0;1dB. Then comparution would have make sense.
@matnetik
@matnetik 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this 100%, and while it’s not a true loudness comparison, overall Ozone is louder given that all the tracks are reading 0db on the master channel. Next time I compare I’ll DEFINITELY toss up a luf meter just to show, great idea!

I'm going to rank them: $100, $50, Ozone, $15. If you tamed the highs on Ozone, I would then re-rank them, $100, Ozone, $50, $15. I think the 100 dollar master has dynamics, it has the right amount of bass, clarity in the top end, but not too bright like the ozone. Overall I think its the most balanced and you could listen to it for the longest period, without ear fatigue.

Well observed. I don't think AI will ever replace human ears and it's capability to adapt. Even if Ozone created such a perfect mastering, it won't ever make separate mid/side manual adjustments or automations. Mastering is so much more that just EQ or compressions. Also, ozone is a good choice for plugin matter, but no plugins in the world can be better than a full analog Mastering, which is the most common in hight tier music industry

Yeah, it uses relatively old piece of hardware emulation to do mastering, but since I am orientated to producing acoustic, rock music, I find it gives more saturated, warm, punchy mixes, like those in 70's, which I really like.

The tone match of the $100 was cool but it cost $100 to get that, plus the cost of Ozone. And when level matched it was suddenly very clear that for whatever reason the tone matched version took out all of the sweet top end that I didn’t even realize was so well executed in the $100 master. For me the true test of a good master is if the loudest one that seems to sound the best, when level matched back down to mix level, is actually the best. Then compare them all at the same lufs at the chorus. That’s when I can really discern the differences in tone.

Yeah it's interesting. I think for my ears, purely sonically, the 100 dollar and 50 dollar version sounded the most pleasing and they didn't change the sound of your mix, but knowing that most people will listen to the song with phone speakers, small bluetooth speakers and earbuds, the Ozone version with a more pronounced upper mid-range and hyped spatial width will probably pop out more and definitely is not worse. Although I did find the Ozone version somewhat more irritating sounding. Interestingly, Ozone was the only out of this bunch that increased the width and spatial feel of the mix substancially - so that was definitely a plus for Ozone. With Ozone the risk with version 9 - perhaps less with 10 - is that the auto mastering used to always apply very bright EQ curves that are fatiguing. I think with the new version it seems to have gotten a bit less crazy about adding excessive top end and focuses more on pushing mid-range, and the new stabilizer module really balances the sound well. So I think Ozone 10 is a great tool for anyone, but a real engineer has the upper hand. Interesting - the gap is getting smaller and smaller though.

Nice vid. It would nice to somehow to do this comparison blind to minimize unconscious bias. Like not knowing which master is which till after you choose your favorite.

In the end its taste and musicality that counts. And thats very individually. It depends on your soundsystem too. One master might have strenghts on a 20 bucks bluetooth, another on your high class 2000 bucks stereo, onother on the headphones, in-ear, 5.1 with dub, without sub.... With mastering you can get lost in the details. Very lost... So letting others get mad on the mix can be worth money. If you have no spare money, ozone gives you mastering in a good quality. You do not have even that money for ozone, start with the hornet master tool.

Your master with ozone is going louder around 3 dB, so it fool the comparaison with the other masters.

Ozone masters is totally crushed in dynamics and has audible ringing/frequency build-up in the upper mid range (800hz-3k area). 15 $ master has great punch and good balance for bass capable systems, 100 $ is less compressed and has overall good balance for most devices, 50$ is just meh not bad and not particularly good. Every Fiverr master in tenfold better then the Ozone one.

I now think as i thought in the past about ozone 8 that eq matching and other AI processes made with ozone sound like a little bit unnatural, like in this track for example the $50 and $100 guys made the song sound natural with not too accentuated mids or highs, unlike ozone that sound like it's doing a +4db bell from 3khz to 8khz range, like you've said, its a little too bright. I don't know why but ozone's assistant likes a bright sound overall.

50 & 100 sound commercial as in everything is FLAT compressed to the middle and no dynamics. Not awful by any means but to my ears, BORING. Think safe and conservative. Ozone 10 is dynamic, clear and loud but I also feel it went a bit harsh on the upper mids; at least to my ears. I would tame a bit of the upper mids a smidge. And you honestly have that option when you mix with Ozone versus sending it back to the master engineer. It is crazy that you got there with Ozone in less than 10secconds versus the mix engineers probably spending far more time dialing in and tweaking their masters.

Hey Matnetik, Love the content. I wanted to share a free plugin similar to the stabilizer in Ozone. It's the TRD Nova by Tokyo Dawn Labs. Had it for years and love the Eq compression on this plug in. Now it's just a part, but a cool multi band EQ compressor.

They're all too bright, and there's lost mid-range definition, but the Ozone mix is my favorite. I use Ozone 10 with my mastering preset stored on every mix. Mixing will drive you insane if you're a perfectionist, and have OCD, lol. It comes down to the song, and how the recorded performance is, first and foremost!

You can use oversampling on all plugins in the chain in Reaper (various multipliers) and in Cakewalk (x2 for whole project)

@@---pp7tq I know but i don`t use Reaper, but you can also oversample every plugin in every DAW using DDMF Metaplugin. But i doesn`t matter, every plugin that provides distortion, yes even compression does, should have an oversampling option these days.
