I think Where the damage was caused by the heat and burn marks, the heat generated may have fused one of the internal traces inside the board layers to ground unfortunately. If you know how the internal traces run and where they run to , you may be able to cut and bypass that damaged section with jumpers.Great video as always joey, really enjoyed this one👍

The question is if there is short under the layers .. how deep it Is and how many layers are damaged (shored) .. i guess best way will be to take schematic and look at this area .. then start remove one by one component till short gone then rewire every conponent ..

I'd agree with Micro Repairs, the exposed layer is fused to the internal layer below. You'll need to dig to be able to get the short relieved 😌

I had one that was IDENTICAL to this. Dust and all. On mine, it had fused at least 2 layers together, so they were shorting. Your experience here is pretty much identical mate... I believe you can cut the layers away and run jumpers and stuff, but I haven't tried. 😬

Great attempt! As others have already commented, the short is likely between the layers at the burned area. Lifting the top copper layer in that spot and excavating the conductive carbon below might remove the short (worth a try, and nothing to lose). I'm sure you came to terms with this already, but I just wanted to add that if there is already a short, adding a good capacitor during your troubleshooting would not have removed the short since a shorted path already existed (and a good capacitor blocks DC current and only allows AC frequencies to pass through it). Liking the videos, keep up the good work! :)

Thankyouu! Yeah I've actually used the console for parts now and didn't explore the deeper short, but at least I know for next time :D

Most probably you have shorted layers where the explosion happened. You could maybe try to dig into the board there to check if you can separate them. I would recommend you to measure at first the rails in continuity/resistance mode in such cases. Afterwards try removing components and check if the short is still there.

Probably was fused layers. You could try scraping through the blast area to see what happens. Worst case you still have a parts board. Best case it works. I've seen guys like Louis Rossman fix boards worse than this with enough scraping.

Maybe its shorted in the burnt place both sides might be touching together and you can't feel the heat couse its in a layer of the board, who knows maybe by cleaning a bit more and scraping a bit more in the cap area might be fixable

I would take those caps and mosfet off and test again, maybe closer inspection of the burned area potentially shorting between the layers... if the top layer got burned off , chances are the layer(s) under got burned as well...

shame you couldn't fix it m8, had a similar issue with a 12v rail shorted, it was only very small damage but someone had miss screwed one of the long screws into the board and damaged the 12v into a ground layer. With yours as others have said it more than likely fused the 12v into the ground layer. Andrew Paul does have a video of him digging into a PS4 board layer to fix a grounded 5v line issue and was able to fix it.

Joey you need to be very careful. Maybe some layers touch others and it's high probability to create fire when you plug in the power. (Like tronics in one of the latest videos he tried to fix a PS4 droped from very high and almost got fire when he plug in). Always friendly advice. Keep the good work.

I would remove the caps you put on with loads of solder and check for the short again. Probably not it but that solder could easily have bridged the copper area with the pad to ground. I know you were worried about the missing cap being the cause but you should read up about how caps work. They don’t conduct at all. They’re like putting a rubber membrane in a water pipe. The water can’t flow through the membrane but the membrane gets pushed in the direction of the water flow and stretches a bit. Same with electricity in the cap. When they get fully charged they refuse to take any more power. But if you remove the power source and the cap is still in circuit, the electricity that was pressing hard inside them bounces back out again to provide power to the circuit until all the pressure is completely gone. I’ve simplified it a bit but caps never break or complete your circuit. They’re mostly there to smooth out the lumps in an uneven power supply by filling in the gaps when the supply gets weak for a moment and soaking up the surges a bit.
@JoeyDoesTech
@JoeyDoesTech 2 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, thanks for explaining. What about a HUGE cap? Could that then potentially break/make a circuit?
@sdjmchattie
@sdjmchattie 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeyDoesTech I’m no expert, but my understanding is that when the cap is larger capacitance (the number of Farads) it is just capable of holding more electrical charge before being full. Think of it like a low capacitance being a hard rubber disc in a pipe where it’ll flex a bit but if you turn off the water, it’s not really making much difference to what happens next. But if you had a party balloon in there, it’ll fill up with loads of water. Assuming the balloon doesn’t burst, when you turn off the supply, water will come out of that balloon for a good few seconds before it’s empty again. But importantly, in both cases, and why it’s a capacitor and not a battery, the electricity doesn’t get past the capacitor. It only exerts a bit of pressure on the other side due to the stored capacitance. The electricity will be influenced on the other side, but it doesn’t “mix” with the electricity on the side with the power coming in.
@sdjmchattie
@sdjmchattie 2 жыл бұрын
Also while we’re talking about the balloon analogy, what happened to your Xbox is that the balloon burst and the electricity came flooding through in quantities it wasn’t supposed to and cooked the board.
