one thing I really love about how they characterized Doomguy in 2016 is how he dismisses lore exposition, infodumps from other characters etc. he's just here to kill demons bro, he doesn't give a fuck about anything else

Doom Slayer is definitely powerful but he's nowhere near the strongest in fiction, like I don't even think he would register in the Xeelee Sequence books because of how insane it is and I feel like he couldn't kill the Shrike from the Hyperion Cantos series as it exists at every point in time no matter what and is constantly traveling backwards in time meaning even if he did somehow manage to "kill" it, it'll just show up again anyways. But due to the way the Shrike works at most Doom Slayer and the Shrike wouldn't be able to kill each other outside of their first encounter, in short if you survive your first meeting with the Shrike you will survive all other encounters with it due to time travel shenanigans I'm not gonna explain here so the two of them would just kinda have to awkwardly stare at each other every time they cross paths if Doom Slayer survives the first meeting.

In terms of gameplay though, challenges and exploration (for secrets) will really help you in the long run, cause you're gonna need all the upgrade and praetor points that you can get

Doom's actual story is that doomguy killed his commanding officer for ordering him to execute civilians so he got sent to mars as a punishment then he died and went to hell, came back, went to hell again, and stayed there till he got locked up in the coffin you start 2016 in

The DOOM series started in 1993, the most recent game released in 2020 DOOM 1, DOOM 2, and DOOM 64 don't have a huge focus on story and are pretty simple but there is still some form of it In the first game, you play as an unnamed character known as Doomguy who was sent to the moons of Mars to the UAC (a fictional company in the DOOM series that does shady experiments that usually involve them going to hell and causing a demonic invasion) he finds that everyone is dead and the place is overrun with zombies and many types of demons. In the game he starts on the first moon (Phobos) kills every demon that he sees, finds a teleport pad with a picture of a demons head, teleports to the second moon (Deimos) does the same thing but finds that the second moon was in hell somehow, jumps down to the surface, kills everything in his path for a third time, finds a portal to earth and finds that it was invaded too. In DOOM II (1994), he kills more demons and at the end there is a final boss called the Icon of Sin which he kills and is supposed to be the end of the invasion (supposed to be a giant enemy but since the technology wasn't there yet for graphics, its just a wall texture) In Doom 64 (which released in 1996 and was exclusive to the N64 until 2019), the UAC irradiates the moons of mars in an attempt to stop demons from coming back but there is a new demon called the Mother Demon which resurrects all of the demons that were killed in the previous games and he has to kill the demons again. At the end of the game Doomguy chooses to stay in hell to kill demons forever to stop them from invading again DOOM 3 (2004) is a reboot that has nothing to do with any other games in the series DOOM (2016) is the one that you are playing and is a sort of half reboot that's also a sequel DOOM Eternal is the sequel to DOOM (2016)
