Back in 2016, No Man's Sky was one of the most anticipated game's of the year. However - after releasing, No Man's Sky was notoriously missing many of its promised features, and people swore not to overhype themselves ever again... until Cyberpunk 2077.
But, No Man's Sky has received regular free updates, and now many will tell you that No Man's Sky is one of the best redemption arcs in video games, and now worth playing. So - how is No Man's Sky 5 years later?

The game is definitely a grind in the first few hours but it's not as tedious or frequent as you made it out to be, imo. You can buy many of the materials you'd regularly be gathering so my grind was mostly for money, and now it's mostly nanites in the end game after 80ish hours. There's plenty of methods to get both credits and nanites, and there are other resources for upgrades that I'd grind for in between. In the midgame, I focused on base building and unlocking technology, ultimately building a mineral farm that raked in multiple millions every few hours, got myself a nice freighter and exotic ship, now I'm full of S class mods and exploring planets on foot or by exocraft is extremely fun and chill. No worries about weather and maintaing bars. All that to say, there is a sense of real progression and reward in this game, it's a shame you couldn't enjoy it the same way many players of this game do.
@mattheus077
@mattheus077 2 жыл бұрын
I just feel like the start of the game is really bad - you're just thrown in the game, most of the times in a hostile planet trying to survive while you're also trying to learn the game. It's also bad that the game forces you to build a base where it then forces you to move to another system. The game is cool and super chill (I have 150ish hours) but I couldn't get other people to try the game because of it (I started another save to help and saw these problems). Again, it's a shame that a painful first 3-4 hours experience can keep you away from the true game experience - freighters, space fights, guild missions, underwater and true planet exploration, economy, etc.

This is super important. Since he's clearly a console preferred player, the games he's used to playing are more linear story based games. NMS is very much a PC game that harkens to the survival crafting genre. Games where you're expected to cultivate your own endgame experience rather than play the game until some endgame emerges like the vast majority of single player console games. Going into NMS expecting the game to tell you what to do at all steps is just a recipe for disappointment.

I think the reason your running into the problems you do is that the game doesn't point you towards the inventory expansion properly. You can get it upgraded for pretty cheap and then just be able to stockpile materials ad infinitum, making it so you're not grinding every 5 minutes to stock up on suit energy or base materials. Similarly, you can also go to the quest menu and reset the quest locations to be local around you, so teleporting away from your story quests isn't punishing as you can just localize them back to your current location.

@spajdermenkovic
@spajdermenkovic 2 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree, while minecraft is a resource gathering game the resource gathering is very clearly tied to the exploration component of the game (caves), whereas no mans sky doesn't really engage besides find resource with scanner and mine. However, I think with minecraft specifically, it captures an appeal that games in the same genre dont, because it utilises blocks which are essentially like virtual legos, whereas other games just let you build structures wholly or at least in whole parts. I think this is why minecraft kind of gets a free pass despite at some points having some admittedly tedious grind

This game definitely won't click with everyone. Eliminating the grind is something the game doesn't teach very well. After you make your first few million credits, the grind disappears immediately, and you can focus on exploring, fighting, building, community projects, or anything else. I feel like this video didn't get too deep into the game, missing out crucial additions such as the Dungeons added in the Desolation update, or automatic resource gathering added in Beyond via mineral extractors. You can also reduce the resource requirements for any activity: A fully upgraded hyperdrive can jump up to 30 times before being refuelled. Launch thrusters recharge automatically with a certain upgrade. You can automatically harvest resources with AFK farms. A special mech suit can protect you from all environmental hazards.

The problem i have with it is that most people who constantly make fun of them seem to either 1. make a strawman by for example taking one or two people who made a gameplay video were they play badly and then use it as a major portrayal of the majority of the group, or 2. which is when they are right when it comes to actual gaming journalism companies like IGN or Gamespot, they wouldn't tell you why such mistakes were made and would blame it on the individuals who work there instead of perhaps looking into whether it's simply their mistake or it's actually a more sistemic problem that has roots inside the company itself, maybe out of mere ignorance or maybe because they do not care and want to be entertained by having something to be mocked or mock themselves (which is something that honestly makes me quite uncomfortable). Personally I'm convinced that with very honest and constructive criticism and by acknowledging what actually happens behind the scenes and why, both communities should at least try to actually bridge the gap that has been forming between them for the past years.

Creative mode is there for those that don't have time to invest into the game, people on college or with jobs, and that is a good thing. The game stops being grindy after the tutorial because you can automate all the "grindy" stuff. Now, going back to your precious Star Citizen, at least No Man's Sky HAS the option to skip the grind, while in SC people have to grind for hours to get ships or *pay for them*, which is laughable considering you tried to make a point where "iF yOu nEEd CrEaTivE ModE To PlaY ThE Game tHeN iT ShoWs How LacKlUsteR tHe GamEplAy iS" when in star citizen you can literally pay to skip all the gameplay itself lol. The game's "issue" is not that it has an endless resource gathering loop, but that it gives you plenty of ways to elevate and improve your own quality of life, but it doesn't spoonfeed you by telling you exactly how. You figure it out, you look it up, and yea, you struggle a bit. But throwing your hands up and not even attempting to explore the depth the game has and its many mechanics outside of following the storyline just means you're not playing the game correctly. Comparing it to BOTW or Dark Souls as if those games do remotely the same thing NMS does is incredibly small-minded and kind of just means you were looking for a typical, instant gratification AAA game, where everything you find is one and done. Yea this isn't a review, but it still shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what this game is and why it's good, and ultimately a bad take.

@DaveControlLive
@DaveControlLive 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlackMammoth25 I enjoy permadeath mode on a lot of games, I just did it for fun. I wasn't 'blaming' the game for it. I just included that to poke fun at myself. Don't take everything so seriously. I like challenging games, so thought I might enjoy the mode. That's all there was to it. - Blaknite - My only point about those two games was comparing the exploration, specifically, and why I didn't enjoy exploring a procedurally generated world. Games like Hades, Enter the Gungeon, and Binding of Isaac also have plenty of procedural generation - but it enhances that style of gameplay. Here - every world felt procedurally generated and monotonous to me. It made me not care about any planet I was on. And I'm fine with 'gameplay loops'. I love Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley. But I find those loops enjoyable, this one I did not. The narrative that was added pushes you towards more exploration. I also did other side quests (like the Black Hole one), which also pushes you towards exploration. While you could argue crafting on a planet is the goal of the game - which is fine - everything narratively and quest-wise was pushing me towards frequently leaving planets behind. So, I never wanted to fully construct a giant base, or get super creative with it, when I knew I was about to have to leave it behind anyways. I knew the redemption story of the developers going in, and honestly went in wanting to enjoy the game. But I'd be lying if I said I did. Either way, as I said in the video - it's great that you enjoy the game. I'm happy that you did, and I'm especially happy that Hello Games redeemed themselves as developers, and love what they have done for the community and the game. The game wasn't for me. I have over 250 hours in this game, and when I do agree with some points, like how the game basically has no guides on how to manage and gather resources more efficiently, there is a lot more to this game after you play for a while. After the first few hours, and after you made your first million or so units, you can easily purchase almost any material you want from the space stations e.g. 2000 oxygen is only about 50,000 units and it is so much more efficient that I find myself not using the mining beam at all in the endgame. In the mid and early game though, you can also destroy cargo pods on freighters, explore derelict / abandoned freighters for nanites, materials, ancient artifacts and whatnot. There is so much to this game that it is a huge shame that he found it as a "resource gathering" game. For my experience in the endgame, having almost every single S-class upgrade installed on my exosuit, exocraft, starship, and freighter, and having multiple bases, having travelled to a different galaxy (Eissentam) with more paradise planets (which are planets without any environmental hazards), what I can tell you is that the game is very rewarding and all be it a bit grindy at times, this game has no shortage of features that are fun; having a huge freighter, looking for cool planets to build on, searching through derelict freighters, going on r/nomansskythegame and r/nmscoordinateexchange and going through portals, finding many cool builds, planets, starships, multi-tools, not to mention the recent expeditions, where you start a new save file and are put onto special scenarios and have unique quests in order to get time-limited items that you can get on every save file. You can get pets, build really cool bases with glitch building and other niche methods, and more. There are tons of things that he simply did not mention in the video. There are tons of things that he simply did not mention in the video. This video feels half-baked and does not mention the multitude of things that are in No Man's Sky. I get that this game is not for everyone, but if you are going to post a half-baked video on a somewhat reputable gaming review channel, that is simply sad. Many people could have seen this video and just went "nope, i guess im not playing that" and wouldn't even give the game second thought.
@w1llow01

I think you went into it with your mindset that the game was not fun. Yes, the early game is repetitive but what game is not repetitive, once you start making money and getting nanites you unlock the game, You can buy starships, exocrafts, mechs, and eventually freighters and have your own fleet. There is a lot of crafting and gathering or buying resources but I don't hear no one criticize that same loop in Minecraft so why shit on the game like that. If it is not the type of game you like then play a shooter or another type of game you enjoy but you can't deny the game has come a long way from when it started and remind yourself that an indie developer has supported the game for 5 years and the updates have been free of charge in the era of loot boxes and constant monetization of pretty much every aspect of games.
@titanscar2183
@titanscar2183 2 жыл бұрын
Fantastic point actually, the game is very comparable to Minecraft in how the early game goes. It's searching for the same material until you hit a goalpost, in which case you move it further ahead to find new materials. The moment the goal post moves you have an ever-expanding list of options to put your goal post at, and it genuinely makes the game entertaining. The only reason why I can see people not liking NMS is because of the lack of decent combat and the fact that the game really is basically just a resource grind with nice locals, but the game is solid. It has a nice flow to it, especially now. It has an extremely dedicated developer, has become what we were promised and more, and in general is a pretty fantastic game to play if you want something to relax to at all times. And I'll give NMS credit for that reason more than any other. From the earliest point to the latest point in the game, NMS is low effort, you never have to play the game in a serious capacity for any amount of time. For the most part you sit back, enjoy the ride and relax, and I'll always love it for that reason.

Once I realized that I was rehooked because I started stumbling onto all the ways they actually fixed the grind of the game by rewarding your playstyles in different ways. Do you want to be a space warrior king of combat saving the needy? You'll still end up with the means to make money.. you want to become resource tycoon? They got a system for that now too. With the Expeditions mode, players have to start from scratch with randomized characters and item and do challenges; To me this was no issue since i know what to do, and can guarantee that resource gathering was not tedious because i had a goal in mind, and knew how to get it So him saying that the entire game is just tedious resources gathering is completely bullshit because he didnt explore the rest of the game There are easy ways of gaining resources such as mining deposits, shops, freighter crews, vehicles (heck, a single mining deposit can get you thousands of resources without grinding at all, i just teleport to where they are at) My point is that this is not a story-driven game, its a survival space exploration game, and its ironic that he said Hello Games had no clue what this game wanted to be at launch, when clearly, he has no clue what type of game this is supposed to be I get its not for everyone, but it genuinely felt like he had a biased view since he played this at launch

But here's something no one ever said: "Gather resources and survive." Great! Finally, someone simply said what this game actually is. If you like it, hurray! But we need to start talking about gameplay loops in terms like this instead of concepts like, "It's where you can do ANYTHING and explore SPACE!" That's not true. That's the colorful paint put on the fact that it's a resource and survival game, set in space. Again, if you like that, great! But let's be transparent about what games offer.

I honestly have never understood all of the people complaining about the planet terrain. Do they think the Martian landscape is flush with grass, trees, and fauna flying through the air? Rocky planets are the VAST majority of the planet types in the universe, and it makes sense that any universe even roughly based off of our rules (carbon is the molecule for life, life needs oxygen and water to survive, etc) that the planet distribution would roughly match it as well. I mean if you don't like rocky desert planets, don't play Elite, that thing is 98% desolate rocks.

What is really needed in NoManSky is for you to develop your spaceship to the degree where you don't need to do the chores over and over and over again. Something like a capital ship that you can travel on between solar systems but then use a smaller ship to get to different planets and bases. This is a tried and tested formula like for example in modded Minecraft. There it takes an effort to create something that makes things easier in the future - but still adds more and more complication to the game at a steady pace.

It’s like any other open survival pseudo resource gathering game. You get out of it what you put in it, if you just try to play it like a triple A game it’s going to be repetitive as your constantly trying to scrap struggling to get by with minimal resources and minimal technology and innovation. What he didn’t do was build bases that innovated his resources, tamed animals, sought to upgrade or really searched for any resource improvements, decided to build vehicles, or mechs. He didn’t do any of it. He didn’t even really explore that was his fault the draw of the game is exploration and not knowing what your going to run into next and all he did was jump planet to planet ignoring the actual gameplay and decided to stick to the early game grind of struggling for core resources.

simple trick i found Find a badly damaged ship (preferably hauler B class for example) repair some things like the pulse engine and the trust launchers. Then go to the space station and wait for traders with their ship. Make sure the switch costs 0 units. After transaction, run immeadiatly to your old ship to reclaim it. Now you have an infinite source of units and other resources. :)

I have over 200h of this game. I really love it and had some really magical experiences on it. But, sometimes i do have a hard time finding a purpose in the game, because it really does not tell what to do. With that said, i disagree that is a "resoure gather" game. As said, you dont really need to collet basic resourses after the first few hours. The game works by letting you decide and find out what you want in it, so the feeling of gathering carbon with the worst weapon its supposed to make you want to upgrade it or find another way around it, like buying stuff in the space station, finding ancient relics that you can sell, stealing cargo ships. I understant the feeling of it being a shallow experience, some planets do feel a lot like each other, most items you get just appear on the inventory, you cant even see them in 3D, but imo it was a little disrespectful to call a building that some guy was definitely passionade about (the giant robot) shallow. Its like a toy or a board RPG, sometimes you have to use your imagination for it to work best. I dont believe that the game have a very narrow audience, i believe everyone can find a way to have fun on it. Exploration is a big thing, but it shouldn't be driven by resourse gathering. In the end, you have all the right to dislike the game and say your opinion about it, but even if its not a review, you have to be fair and at least show to the audience that the game have more ways to be played and experienced.

From what I see This Games Veterans are in their 40's and Very Helpful in the community which is truly Global and Further more I've seen the Ladies liking It (doing well) and even a few Primary school Kids Playing Multiplayer and Participating in Expeditions Mode .And The game allows you To Turn off Griefing /PVP Also never mentioned The NMS Community act as moderators and The Developers acknowledge the bug reports and Ideas put forward in their Zen desk Link

Honestly no, it deserves to sink, you should not wish for a game made with exploited developers and pushed by the greed of their investors to succeed because they'll do it again and again, yes we all wanted a cyberpunk open world, but I'm willing to give up cyberpunk 2077 if that means will have better conditions in the game industry And it's not the same case as No Man's Sky, most of the game was done entirely by 6 Devs in the 2016 launch, they had a flood that destroyed lots of the progress I suggest internet historian's video about No Man's Sky to learn why are they so different
