Tips that have kept me close to sugar-free for the past several months: 1) Have a stash of sugar-free (stevia & monkfruit/erythritol) cheat treats; 2) Telling dinner hosts I will bring my own dessert (and avoid bread & pasta); 3) Making a large main dish & separate into indiv. servings (as Sarah suggested); 4) Replace sugar intake with healthy fat intake (keeps you satisfied) 5) Try intermittent fasting . . . helps you stick with meals instead of snacking 6) Binge-watch videos such as these to keep you on track and to gather tips

I quit sugar for six weeks once. Honestly it was incredible. My whole being just moved up a notch, everything got better. It's quite shocking actually, to see how you're supposed to feel, when you do you realize you've been living like shit all along and never knew. It does not take eight weeks to eliminate "sugar" (sucrose and added fructose). I did it in one day, felt better the very next day and as little as a week later felt like a new person. A whole range of what seemed like chronic ailments were either gone or in full retreat ... itchy skin, blurred vision, fungal infections, worsening symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, arthritic joint pains, muscular pains and cramps, constant tiredness, difficujlty concentrating and weight gain around the waist despite eating no more calories than I need. I think it helps to make a complete and symbolic end to using sugar (sucrose/fructose). It is like stopping smoking. DIscarding the last pack of cigarettes while it is still half full somehow increases the motivation to keep off them in a way that trying to stop after the last cigarette is gone does not. I guessed that the same might help in giving up sugar. So, despite the apparent crime of discarding food that some people would be glad of I: - emptied the sugar tin (1kg sucrose) into the waste bin, along with a pack of chocolate biscuits; - poured all remaining coca-cola and fruit juices down the drain; - threw out part-used jars of jams and chutneys, - (along with tomato sauce, chilli sauce, mustard and any of the other preparations in my fridge and larder that contained sucrose or added fructose). The only fructose to enter my body since has been from whole fruits, and tha is a small amount that the body processes differently than the massive amounts added to food in the form of HFCS, bnecaus eof the fibre and other chemicals in the fruit. It really is that easy. The clearer head, feeling of well-being, and rapid disappearance of chronic helath problems completely override any cravings. I am now making all my own meals from the basic ingredients so that I know exactly what I am eating. Apart from the immediate health benefits I also find that my sense of taste has improved. I had thought all by ailments and declining sense of taste were due to genetics and getting older. Turns out they were not. I do not care about any arguments going on in the world of food scientists, doctors, food companies, medical researchers and nutritionists anout whether the evidence really confirms what Dr. Lustig is saying. Nor do I care that my anecdotal account is not scientific evidence. The simple fact is that I cut out sugar, all at once, on one day, have not missed it, and have transformned my health as a result., and that is what really matters.

I don't think it's "detoxing" to stop eating sugar. I notice people using this word as if they're addicts when speaking of certain types of food. The problem with seeing sugar or gluten or even carbs (I've seen crazy people saying they are "detoxing" from one of the three macronutrients humans require for good health) is that these things aren't drugs. You probably will feel unwell when you completely eliminate a ready source of easy fuel and force your body to abruptly use more complex way of fueling the body. If you were eating sugar all day before you abruptly stopped, then of course your body will react to that. It doesn't mean you're detoxing.

It’s amazing how much sugar is in items. I was gonna grab some wild rice, and even that had sugar in it. Lol. But, seriously, taking time to read labels and see what’s actually in the items that you buy is really necessary. I am so happy with this no sugar added journey. The plan is to go for 21 days, but I honestly want to make it longer.

Loved how you explained the way sugar isn’t just sugar granules but it’s inside of foods, thank you Sarah. Hope the Thai food authority listens in 😊 as Sydney Thai cuisine used to be the ‘thing’. Even coconut water these days have added sugar, and those plant-based milk not sugar but sunflower or canola oil to thicken it with just 3% of whatever plant it promises on the carton advert. For eg almond milk.

Wow. It is a lot of advise and a good eye opener. Thanks a lot Ms. Wilson

I disagree regarding drinking milk. A huge amount of people cannot digest lactose well not only those who are lactose intolerance. Plus modern day dairy has been proven to trigger inflammation.
@martinirving38245 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems to depend on genetic origin. And lactose is a sugar. Fermented dairy (cheese, yogurt, sour cream) appears to be less of a problem. More evidence humans don't tolerate sugar(s) particularly well.
@DanielBrownsan5 жыл бұрын
@@martinirving3824 Fermented cheeses (by definition, they all are), especially hard cheeses, don't have any lactose in them. (That's what the bacteria eat to make the cheese.)
@DanielBrownsan5 жыл бұрын
It isn't "a huge amount of people". It's fairly specific. Even fully lactose-intollerant people can drink most of a glass of milk without a problem. You may have something else going on. "Modern day dairy"? How is it different? And we'll need to see your evidence to support that claim.
@martinirving38245 жыл бұрын
@@DanielBrownsan , Right. I guess a point I'd make is quality and source is important. Avoiding American industrial cheese product, liquid cheese, imitation cheese and the like is well advised. Cheeses from Europe are expensive. That's the price you pay for genuine quality and desirable source (such as pasture raised animals) I understand France has over 600 cheeses they make. They enjoy their food. They appreciate diversity and quality. There's a lesson there.
@DanielBrownsan5 жыл бұрын
@@martinirving3824 Agree on quality and source... but American industrial cheese product? Do you mean Velveeta? What, specifically, is in Velveeta that's harmful? (I'm not saying it's great, but I have a hunch you don't know what's in Velveeta.) Liquid cheese? Do you mean CheezWhiz? Just the fact that it's spelled that way is a clue it's not really food. "Imitation cheese" could easily be vegan cheese which, I'll grant you, is my definition of hell but is probably better for me overall. "Processed" foods is one of those widely used terms with no formal definition. Unless you walk over to a head of lettuce in a field and take a bite, you're processing food in some way. (If nothing else, you're getting it away from the farm.) Nutrition education is sorely lacking in schools (as is, in some cases, food itself). And if I hear one more person say, "I don't like food with a lot of chemicals in it", I'll slap them. Everything we eat is chemicals. That's what chemicals are.

When I quit sugar, I experienced extreme fatigue and withdrawal. I was so glad when I passed this stage.

So if you want to eat some sugary stuff, consider eating it prior to an exercise regmin. (Vacuuming the house is not exercise - it's activity which is different) This helps a lot fo people have the energy to push though a workout and you will metabolize more of it rather than store it. If you can avoid sugar (I avoid most carbs and follow a Keto diet) you will see tremendous changes. When you quit sugar you may experience headaches for a day or two but you will be thanking yourself later if you can stay disciplined for a while. Many people who are prediabetic can reverse course this way. Always remember, the food industy has a large financial reason to try to convince you sugar is OK. They are not at all motivated by your health concerns.

Many members of the generation before me were diabetics but fortunately, I did not become a diabetic. I've always been underweight/slim and I help other people lose weight.

So 28 pounds. Wow, I would love to lose that much. I'd be almost back to an acceptable weight. I'm eating up all the carbs in my house before going keto because I don't want to just throw it out. Enjoying my breakfasts of cereal and toast before I have to give it up for good. :)

Everyone claims to have the answer, but in reality, there are many ways to just eat healthy. If we listen to everyone, we'd go crazy. Just stay away from processed food and pay attention to what your body can't handle. As with any lecturer, take what you need from him or here and leave the rest.

Great lecture. "So is arsenic and petroleum" is a false equivalency fallacy. But most of this is good sense. I appreciate her saying "start by not drinking your calories." I dropped soda and I'm loads better for it. Then do little gains at a time.

we do not need government intervention in our diets we just need the information (truth) and make our own decisions about our diet.
