The point about Marianne recommending the communist manifesto when she hadn't read it is such a good point that it didn't pick up on, and your analysis of it was so good!

It’s also very ironic that she recommends a book that essentially fueled many people’s revolts against the upper class and the privileged of which she hasn’t even read!

It's like, the shortest book, too, and specifically written to be very clear. So she managed Swann's Way, but not that? It's got to be intentional...

@Teamgeist marxism and stalinism are not the same thing. Besides, reading or talking about the communist manifesto doesn't mean one is communist, just that one has interest in politics, economics, history and/or society.

This video just in time as I finished Normal People an hour ago. I was just about to rewatch your video about Connell. I learned a lot from these videos. I'm 15 years old an currently getting into this kind of literature (the books that are recommended). I loved how you explained the connection between the books that are referenced and the actuall text. I will look out for these references in other books from now on. I'm really gratefull that you use your knowlege and take time to open new worlds to other people.

Also there's a charachter in conversations with friends (sally rooney's debut novel) called Marianne. She's a minor charachter and we don't see her a lot and she has nothing to do with Marianne from Normal People but the first time she's introduced she had just come back from a trip to New York :')))))

"Guess who's back? And guess who's Jack? The answer to both of this questions is me!" Nice rhyme. Nice pun. I have to tell you I love your way of puns and your sort of... may we call it humor ;) Those little puns you do, keep bringing a smile to my face, 'cause I know there is someone out there just brabbling the same way I do. And I have to tell you a lot of people in my surrounding get really annoyed by me doing very bad puns, but I find them even more funny and encouraging the more ridiculous and nonsensish and just roll-your-eyes they are. So what I originally intended with this comment is to say *thank you* for your way of beeing you (with all the puns and fun and stress and everything) and sharing it with the world. Even now, that you are no longer studying you keep my mind sane while examseason. Especially now that it is my last exam seasom before my bachelorthesis... sort of scary... Basicly: Thank you for the little smile you put on my face with the few very first seconds of this video! :D

I've seen two youtubers now that I love make the mistake of saying that Marianne recommends the Communist Manifesto to Connell. It is actually the other way around: "He told her she should try reading The Communist Manifesto, he thought she would like it, and he offered to write down the title for her so she wouldn't forget. I know what the Communist Manifesto is called, she said. He shrugged okay. After a moment he added, smiling: You're trying to act superior, but like, you haven't even read it. " p 13 So no she didn't recommend it to him but the point still stands that Marianne has the advantage of pretending to be "superior" in intellect because of her wealth and the status it brings when in actual fact, Connell, who is working class and stereotypically expected to not have "high culture interests" is actually more well read.
