Today we talk about Lilly Singh, KZbinr, late night TV show host and now author? Following negativity surrounding a little late with Lilly Singh, I decided we'd take a look at her awful book in the first episode of Bad Book Club.

As someone who has struggled with mental illness all their life, the fact that a grown ass woman is suggesting people should "Have fewer emotions" rather than actually learn how to manage feelings in a healthy way is deplorable.

When I was much younger, I liked Lilly Singh. Now, hearing her telling people to suppress their emotions makes my blood boil. That is one of the BIGGEST issues people struggle with in society today. One of the biggest. And here she is, making it 50x worse. A lot of people end up bottling their emotions up or trying to rid themselves of emotions all together. You know where that gets you? It gets you depressed and makes you feel empty. Do NOT do that.

I read this book when I was 15. It genuinely made me so depressed thinking "well I'm not a person in a creative career nor do I see myself being one, all this doesn't apply to me", repressed my emotions a lot which was BAD & got really distant from people basically trying to follow her advice. I'm 17 now and I've realized we do not need a book to tell us how to live life, there are no set of rules in life, you just do what's good and comfortable for you. also her book was soooooo not for her audience but like okay ig

Have fewer emotions... Keeping your emotions pent up is actually super damaging like that's the worst advice. Your emotions don't cloud your judgement, they inform it. It's not possible to completely separate yourself from your emotions unless you're a psychopath, so there's no point trying, it's better to just acknowledge your emotions without letting them overpower you.

Look, my AVID classes have better advice than the crap that lily gave me. A psycologhist would say that surpressing your emoitions aren't normal. Youll eventually have a meltdown, and feel EXTREMELY depressed. Then you might tip over the edge. Repressing your emotions and preteanding everythings fine is not a good stratigy, and teaching this to an impressionable audience is horrable.

Tbh I liked the book when I first read it when it came out because I used to be a fan of her’s (even when her content was clearly going downhill) and thought that her work ethic was really admirable and wanted to learn from it. And I felt like I did learn some good lessons from it! But I also haven’t read the book since I first bought it in 2017 😅 I still think her work ethic is great and I want to have that level too, but for the past 2 years her content got too cringe/boring for me and her night show was even worse... I dunno. I want to still be a fan but she’s making it harder and harder to do over the couple of years... Am I alone in feeling like this?

She is a likeable person (or used to be) and her work ethic is impressive and for many people inspiring. There is a reason why she got famous. But I think people are trying too hard to like her or overlook a lot of valid criticism. Her late night show was objectively bad (i think its valid for people to like it but it is low quality), she uses her sexuality, gender and heritage as a selling point instead of trying to normalise it, surrounds herself with people praising her and deflects criticism as haters and people who are trying to bring her down... Etc. Etc. I think fame, support from people and not listening to criticism lead to her thinking too highly of herself.

I agree that it is going downhill. Her prime was when she was doing the ORIGINAL types of people series etc about 2012 I think? After that...

You have penned my exact feelings for the past 6 months. I honestly actually like her work ethic. Her pep talks get me through most of the issues I'm facing and frankly, I love the book. (Even though I've only read through a quarte of it) sure her videos have become repetitive and boring, but she still has a way with words, I think for me at least... I don't refer to this vid but I'm really just trying to understand why the videos hating on her have doubled tripled since her television debut 😅
