murphy’s journey has always been about choosing between supporting humanity or the state. to be seen as a folk hero or as robocop. it makes perfect sense that he would save cats and fix cars, he is still human. the game is using its gameplay, rather than just dialogue, to explore that theme. in other words, the real meat of the story is buried within a program’s internal mechanical systems. how very meta. how very robocop. this game is a masterpiece.

Yeah, I'm a boomer who grew up with the films and this was definitely the right way to go for the series. Robocop for the new millenium; having fun with it and saving the gut punch for best effect. The silliness of the setup was obvious from the second film. Basically, no one is Paul Verhoeven but Paul Verhoeven and the only thing which saved the sequel from farce were flash imprints from the first one. Making this game entertaining and accessible first was wise for a premise that, while transgressive for its time, has sadly become part of routine discourse on the relationship between free-market economics and neo-fascism in 2023. I love Robocop too but what I remember most right now isn't the incisive and darkly funny commentary - it's mutant Emil being cut in half like an overripe courgette and I love it.

The game hapens between Robocop 2 and 3, so he's suposed to talk more, as he becames more "humanized" at each movie. I think the game's depiction of Robocop is on point. Same for Lewis. Can't find anything wrong about her
@MattKayser Жыл бұрын
I agree. Lewis IS a badass, but she’s also very caring and protective of Murphy. She can be both of those things. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Their (platonic) relationship is one of my favorite things about the property, and about this game. I was a little disappointed that she got sidelined for a bit of the game, but it helps push Murphy without wasting her like RoboCop 3 did. As far as Robo himself, yeah, this takes a lot of queues from the entire franchise, including the series, wherein he talks and interacts with people a lot more by necessity. It’s not out of character, just based on Robo in general, not ONLY Weller’s performance in the first two films. One of the main things about RoboCop 2 that doesn’t work is that they walked his humanity back with no explanation. This brings it back where it should be after the first movie, IMO.

I was actually OK with Robocop and how he speaks simply because it's an evolution of his character from the movies. As in, he's still trying to bring back his humanity, however, he has issues sounding natural. Which is evident in the movies in almost every single line he delivers. And by now in the timeline, he'd be at least attempting to talk/act more like a human and probably failing at it...but failure is part of learning. So, at least in my mind, I have been OK with a lot of his dialogue. However, I do wish he was slightly less chatty at times so when he does deliver the bad ass lines, they truly stand out.

@@adriaanlips9479 The problem, I think, is that too few developers respect the IP. They see it as a vehicle to deliver whatever it is they want delivered. I don't see the issue with Murphy doing simple chores and heavy lifting for his fellow cop colleagues,place tickets and doing literally what every single good cop does for the living. and about him talking too much and cracking jokes, I can see why because the game takes place after Robocop 2 and Murphy by that point became more human and less robotic so ofc he talks alot.Expecting him to still sound robotic and monotone actually defeats the entire purpose and point. Yeah sure he's badass and all for taking down all those thugs by his own,A feat not a single cop couldn't achieve. But beneath that metal exterior,is still Murphy,A Cop with a good heart,try his damn best to make a difference and to be a genuine cop through and through. and that cat quest really helped me appreciate him and see him a more underappreciated new perspective far more than to simply remember him as the super cop who kills thugs in the most gruesome manner

When people talk about Teyon understanding and nailing the tone of the original Robocop, I think the visual presentation is what's doing that for them. I notice that the developer took great care with their choice of lighting, color palette, shot composition, and even the camera focus speed (which is an awesome detail in particular) to capture the sense of the game taking place in the very same world as the movie. Teyon accomplishes this in a lot of the game's cut scenes, where if I look at what's being presented, my brain has to take a moment to recognize that this is not the original movie. That's pretty great. Unfortunately, because of the way that they chose to have information delivered to the player - and this ties into why Alex Murphy feels so off as a character as well - it's a common situation in Rogue City to have a jarring hard cut from cinematic excellence, to an NPC conversation in Starfield.

Everything from the ED 209's growl to the basic feel of the world around you, how people talk and act. I can't point out too much without spoiling some things but it's not a purchase I regret. Sure it could have been better but it isn't terrible like Saints Row, not even fucking close. I'm hoping Teyon gets their hands on Judge Dredd and ALIENS. With how well they tackled Robocop and Terminator I think they'd do both justice. I was kind of expecting Robocop to be some on rail shooter but it has open world elements and free movement. I can only imagine how big and long the game could have been if they were bigger and had more money to throw behind the project.
@Valkod23 Жыл бұрын
Alex Murphy's voice is way off because it's been three and a half decades since Peter Weller was in the first two films, his voice has obviously changed a lot since then. That's who they got for the voice and likeness of Robocop, the original actor himself.

22:49 - I was confused by the supporting John Mills popup at first too but then I remembered that Mayor Kuzak, when you very first meet him, actually warns you about something like this happening. He says it's not just enough to not support him, you can't be *seen* to possibly be supporting him. Basically people spread rumors about who RoboCop supports based on what it looks like he's doing, not necessarily who he actually supports. If you want to not get the "You supported John Mills" flag then you need to straight up not go into his limo to talk to him. There's nothing you can say in that limo that changes it because all the bystanders see is RoboCop going into the limo to talk to the candidate. And that would be really annoying, possibly interesting, except you do get one opportunity toward the end where a reporter just *asks* RocoCop who he supports and you can just straight up declare your support for one or the other. That makes all the other previous encounters moot. That might annoy some people but personally I prefer the choice. The developers basically want you to stew a bit, worrying about unintended consequences affecting the campaign when in actuality they remember its game and they eventually do put all the power in your hands with a definite choice at the end.

While I've been thoroughly enjoying this game, the PS5 version needs some serious work to aid performance stability. It chugs heavily during many battles. I'd definitely advise folk who are sensitive to framerate drops to wait for patches to be released, or to wait for a sale. If you're not phased by such things, knock yourself out, it's a good game.
@Hanoua2 Жыл бұрын
I kind of disagree with your opinion on the story and humor. Yes sure, Robocop himself might say some silly things in the game. But the robocop movies always had a silly world like with all the random tv ads and "I'd buy that for a dollar" with everyone laughing out loud like its the best catch phrase ever. ED-209 falling down stairs and squeeling like a pig, it had a good mix of humour and over the top violence. But it also had drama with Murphy and his family. I loved the abandonned mall level where you go through murphy's mind in a glitchy nightmare sequence. I also love how the other police office consider murphy like he's just one of them and not a superhero, those little side quest might be stupid and boring to you, but to me they reinforce the idea that robocop is "half man, half machine... ALL COP!"

I thought they did a better job with the movie characters than you did, but I agree that the tone is closer to Robocop 2 than the original. Overall I think they absolutely nailed it and I hope we get more AA games like this in the future.

This game really surprised me. It could've been like a 5 hour terribly written janky cash grab fps like a lot of movie based games, but the plot was genuinely interesting. It was like getting a real continuation of the storyline. Then it has these small hub areas where you can do little side quests like it's an RPG and you get XP to level up skills, the gunplay is great, there's dialogue options. For a small budget studio that's mostly known for bad games they somehow created a genuinely good game. I don't mean good considering the budget. I mean just plain good in general.

Can't agree with Murphy and Lewis. Lewis doesn't come across as 'maternal' - the line about the guy's wife is definitely sarcastic and she IS compassionate - you only need to see the first movie to know that. Also, Weller perfectly tapped into the personality (or lack of) of Murphy. He sounds perfect!

RoboCop Rogue City, Dungeons and Dragon Honor Among Thieves, Netflix's One Piece, the Five Nights at Freddy movie and Baldur's Gate 3 all teach the same two important lessons this year, that everyone must take in 1. Have the original creator actively involved. Or, if that's not possible for various reasons. 2. Respect and love the damn source material! How hard can that be.

In a world of reboots and reimaginings that seem to hate that which came before yet made the IP so successful in the first place, there's something endearing about a game like this that shows a clear love for its source material. Something about that with getting the original voice actor, and clearly trying to flex their design muscles from previous works (even if that's not perfect), I'd much rather invest towards that than a AAA studio whose too busy riding previous success with disappointing bloat-filled titles. *cough*Sta-*cough

Augh, I'm gonna be an uber-fan and point out that Frank Miller's script for Robocop 2 was mostly re-written. This dev takes chances and you don't seem to be as fascinated with them as I do, but I really appreciate their characters. The leveling really surprised me. I went full deduction first and charisma 2nd and armor 3rd as priorities. The gun leveling also seemed super genuine/unique. The landmines under the water were such a nice touch for pacing. Also, that cop in the quarry was tortured and killed and I fucking blew everyone away. I mean emotionally, I was NOT desensitized to the chaos.
