I did the trip on this train from Surabaya to Jakarta via Yogyakarta in October 2023. I enjoyed the trip. The compartment carriage was basically empty from Surabaya to Yogyakarta, it then filled up from Yogyakarta to Jakarta. I think it is a great alternative to business class flights (provided you have plenty of time). The scenery on the route through central Java is better than the route along the northern coast (however it takes more time). Highly recommended. I will definitely do it again in 2024.

From the Yogyakarta's city proper to the airport can get you between 1 to 1.5 hours, plus 1.5 hours to check in, 1.5 hours of flight and 30-45 minutes for your luggages if you have some. The time difference is marginal.

The Indonesia Train revolution is amaze me, even for me as Indonesian. I remember when 2010s people can ride train without ticket, broken toilet, and people can selling their stuff on the train. Then, 2015s i shocked the train station system so organized, people without ticket cannot enter the peron. At 2021 i ride train economy class, but everything is clean. The toilet is working and clean. There is air conditioner. Im proud with KAI

You can try many buses in Indonesia. The buses here also have luxurious facilities with cheap prices such as sleeper buses Juragan 99, Sinar Jaya, Harapan Jaya, M Trans, 27 Trans etc.

you can book it at: www.kai.id its only available on some routes though (i know it runs from surabaya and yogyakarta to jakarta). When you buy the ticket just search for the train called Argo Semeru Compartment

this is literally for enjoying a trip and that's the purpose, because at the same price you can just book a flight from jogja to jakarta, yes it might be just an economy airliner but hey you got an hour trip compared to a seven hour trip, Indonesians still have practicality mindset so we would prefer to choose the airliner
