FYI, the first Sony "pocket" transistor radio was showcased by the head of Sony, at the time. He put the radio in his shirt pocket, but it was revealed that the shirt pocket was enlarged in order to fit the radio. The TR-63 would not fit in existing shirt front pockets, so the company issued shirts with expanded pockets to salesmen so they could claim the product was "the world's first pocket sized transistor radio".

I like sony radios, the new ones. The first transistors were not quite there yet and they got better over time. So by When the quality of the transistors improved the radios got better. I think the early radios had to use 9v batteries or some using the 22v batteries. Now you can use 2D cells.

I've been to all 50 states also. The route through Utah that your other commenter said, is yes, lovely, and make sure you drive through the snowy mountains of Colorado on that Rocky Mountain loop. But - also visit Alaska. The drive from Glennallen looking at Matanuska is beautiful and you might enjoy the community radio programs. The Caribou Lodge has rooms with a private hot tub, so that you can have your snow and onsen at the same time. Go also through Soldotna and ride the river rafting on the Chugach River through the valley. The turquoise of the river is a spectacular jeweled color. Take the boat ride in Valdez to watch the glaciers calfing. Stop by the Portage Glacier for lovely camera shots.

I used to love camping. I grew up by the Rocky Mountains in Canada and would regularly hike to the top of mountains. Now in my 30s it hurts to sleep on the ground and I have decided that cabining is a good substitute. Just rent a nice cabin with some friends, play some boardgames, drink some beer, go to the beach, take a hike, have a nice fire with some smores.

I have to say, as a portugese, I think they were the first to come to Japan, though they were soon kicked out, and then the dutch came. So, true, the dutch were the first to make friends with the Japenese :D , but the portugese left some legacy behind (eg. tempura is a portugese dish imported in japan, and Nagasaki became a prosper and imporant city under the influence of Portugese colons who helped develop the city ).

I can attest to the usefulness of calling everyday things around the home/works/school by their [insert language you're learning] names. When I was at primary school in Wales, they had stickers on everything in the classroom with the welsh names on, and we were encouraged to ask for them in the welsh. Even now at 34, that's the only welsh I can recall (except what you see on road signs, same principle really).

1:24:11 Kinda have to disagree, I think there a good few tourist highlights in Sendai, especially if you're into Japanese history at all. Zuihoden mausoleum complex, resting place of true badass Date Masamune, is a beautiful spot to visit, and cool on a hot day since it's surrounded by tall cedars; Osaki Hachimangu shrine is also nice. The Aoba castle ruins have a great view onto downtown Sendai. For modern buildings, Sendai Mediatheque is a multipurpose library with an unusual structure, and a memorial to the 3/11 Tohoku Earthquake on an upper floor. If you time it right there might be a citywide music festival (as on one of the days I visited), and there's always good food- have to eat your fill of gyuutan and zunda. I really wish more tourists would make it north to Sendai and beyond, they don't know what they're missing.

On the camping idea it might be interesting if you can work with someone like Survidol Kaho and get her to teach some teams made from Trash Taste and Tokyo Creative people. Then have a realistic budget per team to go and buy some bits like sleeping bags, cord and knife given what Kaho suggests to get you to build a shelter to sleep in for the night. She can then judge the efforts to set up a shelter, fire and cook food.

The UK is small compared to the US. You can drive from Glasgow to London in around 8 hours(?), with stops at BP for delicious Marks & Spencer 3 for 10 pounds meals. Just going from Sacramento to Seattle takes 13 hours at 80 mph, and that's only the west coast. It's at least a week going from the east coast to the west coast. If you do an Abroad in the USA, it's going to take weeks to hit all 48 contiguous states. Alaska you can only videotape in July or August because of the daylight and cold weather. I've visited all 50 states. You'd really have to plan the route to hit all the states. Please don't just eat at McDonalds. Try Sonic -- it's great. There's cheesy tater tots, burgers or hot dogs with chili or onion rings, slushies, and it's more affordable than McDonalds. Sonic is a car hop, so you order from your car stall and they bring the food out to your car.

Chris, thank you for taking Celiac disease and gluten free seriously. Too many people think it's a fad and make fun of it. It's an autoimmune disease that affects millions around the world. For those with Celiac Disease eating gluten (the protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, and barley) causes the immune system to permanently damage the intestines. This leads to serious pain, malnutrition, intestinal cancer, and other autoimmune diseases. Immediate symptoms are severe gastrointestinal distress (cramps, diarrhea), which would make a vacation miserable. For your viewer who asked about eating gluten free in Japan- As a fellow Celiac I've given this some thought. Anything with soy sauce is out. It has wheat in it. Noodles and sauces are out. But there may be other things as well. For instance, apparently it's common to use white vinegar (made from wheat) in rice used to make sushi. Unless you speak Japanese fluently you may not be able to ask if they used white vinegar or rice vinegar. Another food I would be wary of is Dashi. This is the broth used in soups. It may or may not contain soy sauce, depending on the cook and the dish. Personally, I avoid eating out. When I go to Japan I plan to find a place to stay with a small kitchen. As with all of my travel in the US, I will buy local meat, fish, and produce and make my own food. Not much fun, but the only way to be safe. If you do manage to find gluten free foods there, maybe you could make your own blog and let the rest of us know. BTW Chris, We just moved to Utah two months ago! It's lovely. Hope you get to see it some day. -Cheers

Also, when asking for directions don't be surprised if things are given in time instead of miles/kilometers and depending on area some people say stores or stations on or near corners instead of street names.
