After all these years, I’d have been happy just to take a photo with Ken, let alone spent a day or even A WEEK together. I spent just 2 days with Ken, Koyuki and Tom Cruise because they filmed a few scenes of the last samurai in an old farmer's house i own near Engyo-ji, and they also slept at the Inn a friend owns there. but i wasn't allowed to film them at all. It was really intimidating, although Koyuki and I got along very quickly because of our common love for cats (the farm house and the inn had many cats and she spent most of her time around them, when she wasn't smoking (she is the most unbelievable chain smoker i have ever seen). Ken and Tom however were very intimidating, but very friendly. Tom is truly a nice guy and Ken is the epitome of class. But a week, damn !

Wow! That was one of my favorite films when I was a young man. The scenes in the Japanese county side and village were amazing and beautiful! It would be a huge honor to get to know the Actors :) I hope to visit Japan and spend time in the country away from tourist destinations. We missed our vacation to Japan and the Philippines because of Covid :( But I’ve been studying Japanese so hopefully by the time we get out there I can interact with Japanese people at a minimal level:) Great story ありがとうございます。

@@Antifag1977 Thank you very much, this is very kind of you. I am actually neither. I am Icelandic and Greenlandic and i now live in Switzerland where i work. I however lived in Japan for nearly 25 years and bought an old derelict farmhouse and some land there, which i renovated and turned into an animal shelter for farm animals (I'm a wild life vet and ethologist). I do speak Japanese and English equally but can't claim either as native tongues. But thank you very much Devin, you made my day !

@@lyingcat9022 Thank you very much. I would like to just rectify trwo things very quickly. They shot only a few scenes in the house but i believe that the outdoors scenes of the last samurai were shot in New Zealand if i am not mistaken, so if you enjoyed the scenery you might also want to include New Zealand on your traveling list. I hear it is a wonderful place. And secondly, my comment is misleading, i am actually not Japanese. I "just" lived and worked there for 25 years so this is home in a way, but i am from Iceland and Greenland. The Japanese countryside is insanely beautiful and i couldn't invite you more to explore it. Leave the touristic Japan for tourists, Tokyo and Kyoto are nice but they are not Japan, and just 2 days in each city is enough to see them. I recommend you to visit places like Mount Yoshino in the spring or autumn, Lake Kussharo and the blue pond in Hokkaido in winter, Kumano Nachi Taisha and the whole Wakayama area, the Himeji feudal castle, Miyako-Jima and Joron islands in the south, the bioluminescent rocks of Okayama, the Daigo-Ji temple where my farmhouse is (in winter) and the sand dunes of Tottori. These are amazing places. But also get lost in the Tohoku area, and go meets the priestesses of Aomori and the Yamabushi and Zen monks of Eihei-ji and of course climb mount Fuji and visit the remote island of Iriomote and try to meet its wild cat which exists only there, or Yakushima which is the most mysterious place in Japan or the old hot spring water city of Gujo hachiman . I could go on and on. Just visit Japan whenever you get the chance and you won't be disappointed at all. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day.

Mine was particular and i was a little too reckless as a child and teenager so i ended up making choices leading to an unusual life ! I don't regret it but i am not sure i would make the same choices today knowing the obstacles it led to and the bumps on the road (like 18 months in prison in China and never being allowed on chinese territory for the rest of my life), quite a few police records in Japan as well for my animals rights activism. I could have been a 9 to 5 white collar worker in Scandinavia and have a very simple life instead, and i realize that although it is a boring life it is a far safer one.

He shows us how great a friend he can be, he shows us how the people of Japan are taking to him and showing their spirit amidst natural disasters and man made ones. In the end he fulfils his dream and the last picture of him is a huge smile. What a journey……what a privilege it has been to see him grow and become just wonderful. My Mother is from Tome, which is about a 30 minutes drive from Kesennuma. When the earthquake and tsunami happened, we were all devastated. The whole industry in the area was destroyed, and combined with population drop and people moving to the big cities, it's been a difficult recovery process. But slowly I think the region is starting to rebuild. There's still a long way to go, but I think that media attention and people's drive to rebuild what was destroyed has really helped. I really appreciate your videos on the Tohoku region as a whole, as I think that internationally it doesn't get enough attention. I'm glad that more people will learn about how great the Tohoku region can be, especially northern Miyagi.

A year before this happened I was in the Chile Earthquake and I can tell you that what Ken Watanabe has done is more than just helped them build back the town. The sense of normalcy that he has helped to provide the town is probably his greatest gift to them. Great video, as always.

I really admire it when an actor tries to remain just a ‘normal guy’ even after they become world famous. Ken is just a humble bloke who uses his fame for good and he doesn’t let it get to his head. He’s a person first and an actor second. I love that.

He is a present character in all the memorable movies I have ever watched and enjoyed. It was such a beautiful and selfless idea to come up with a cafe in a place that has suffered much to tragedy. Even after his passing there will be people out there meeting, eating and laughing with their friends and future loved ones and this is kind of poetic.

It's interesting that when Ken-san is taking about himself and Japan, he speaks Japanese, but when he's talking about his western roles he sometimes switches to English. Also, extra thumbs up for praising Tampopo!

I think it has more to do with him not actually speaking English as fluently as everyone thinks, and being unable to express everything he wants to in English. On the Abroad in Japan podcast Chris mentioned that Ken's English wasn't as good as he thought it would be and chalked it up to him having to just memorize lines phonetically for his western films, like Zhang Ziyi did in her early films
