This is the story of how I stopped using the Internet for 30 days. Well okay, I still sent emails, but I stopped using what the Internet has become - social media and content recommendation algorithms.
0:00 Do we know what we want?

I am 18 years old and I have deactivated all of my socials (besides KZbin of course). When I did this many of my peers were all "How would you talk to people? Why would you do this?" Studies, many studies, have proven that being on these platforms cause anxiety and mess with our dopamine responses, but so many people use them that those who dislike the platforms go "whelp, if everyone else is doing it, I have to do it too or else I will be out of the loop." I had to take a long look at where I want to be in the future before I deleted anything, and go "Do I really want to be 40 staring at my phone for at minimum an hour a day? Am I really happy doing this?" I am glad that I disengaged, but I also feel sorry for those who feel they cannot and must not otherwise they will be scrutinized for it. Best of luck to all of you, good job Ari.

I applaude you, but as ive just mentioned in a different post: Dont be to strict on yourself, if you know the dangers you can ride this river! if you dont at all you will become more separate from others.Dont get me wrong -> I like being alone, its my favorite state of being if you know what I mean. But if you want to engage with your others you cant really deny the medium is out there. Good mindset, just dont overdo it as with everything... you are wise beyond your years, but let me tell you what you already heard: the middle way is the golden way almost anytime! Pandoras Box cant be closed, the media is here to stay and so on... ;)

I haven't watched news, or looked regularly at Facebook, Instagram, etc., since the summer of 2020. I got sucked into social media and tv while we were in lockdown, and I realized how much it was actually harming me. I had to claw my way out of depression and anxiety, and part of the healing came through avoiding media. I only watch YT on the weekends as a treat when I have lots of cleaning and chores to catch up on! Great video!!!

@@trmoore0922 What makes you think I haven't tried talking to him many time? You don't know me or him. We have been married for 24 years. It's an addiction my friend. You obviously have never seen this behavior nor know the psychology behind why it happens(I do). Even if it was to run and hide from life(in his case it isn't) it isn't healthy or acceptable. Wouldn't we all like to do that??..Ignore life and hide in our phones. But sadly someone has to be the grown up. We can't hide from life. I will carry what I have to carry, but I won't stop warning people..male or female about the dangers of mindlessly scrolling and scrolling your life away. It becomes more than a habit. Soon you look back and realize you accomplished nothing and were part of nothing. And left others to carry what was left.

I like what you said about we're like in a experiment that we didn't sign to participate. No one was ready for the fast changes of the last two decades. No one knew how to deal with it healthly, and we're getting conscious about the bad things just now. As you said, there are many good things! Like, I'm from Brasil and thanks to Internet and youtube and other media I have acess to amazing content. In instagram I follow a lot of professionals that inspires me, but even with this good side, we have to watch ourselves to not lose our focus. Sometimes I feel lost with so much goof content, or pressured and anxious seeing amazing people because I feel I'm so late for all, I have to always learn and do more, but like, the time I spend seeing "good content" or even relaxing watching some cat videos...I could be using to take care of my mental health, or to improve my skills, or many other stuff. It's a challenge to learn how to deal with all of this healthly. As you said, it's impossible to cut it off our lifes, we need it to work, to study, to keep in touch with family and friends, but we have to always be watching to not lose focus and keep scrolling... I love your reflections videos, please keep sharing, it's so important!!

I'd really like to commend and validate your feelings on this matter. Not only are there negative consequences to the everyday man who finds that an extra 30-60 minutes of their day has disappeared into the ether; there are dire consequences to those struggling with mental health. A depressed person may find their sense of worth or value in the many innumerous hours they spend scrolling through a tiktok feed; I for sure was one of them. This sense of rebellion against this "thing we did not ask for or sign up for" is in my opinion a valiant fight. Kudos to you Xiaoma, and thank you for being another voice in this fight against this corporate consumerism interest.

I do not partake in social media. I do enjoy KZbin however.. I have always hated "shorts" because they clutter up my subscription feed. I believe many KZbin creators dislike them also? Thanks for the video.

Very interesting, thanks for creating and sharing. Certainly food for thought. I will give it a try and cut back my news consumption to once a week for a month and see how it goes.

I got rid of Facebook 13 years ago and instagram 12 years ago. Never downloaded TikTok. I feel like an alien when I’m out and about. So out of place. People are so invested in their online lives and algorithms. It’s truly concerning.

As a teacher, I eagerly wait for this wake-up call to reach the greatest number of people possible. What we see is a bunch of people with their eyes glued to their screens all the time. Fortunately for us - the old generation - we did not count on any electronic device to have fun. One of the best videos kiddo! Thanks for sharing.

Love the consumption fast that you did.😊😊 I too did go down a rabbit hole with a couple news items I was following. It was the mayor of Dolton, and another person. The I noticed there was more coming though my news feed things I didn't even want. Ot got to the point it was an hour when I got home from work. After 2 weeks I said no I've got to slow down on my viewing. So now 2 to 3 update not more than 30 minutes, then move on. It did feel like I was going down this hole and want was coming through my news feed was just feeding that Theory to what I was watching before hand. That was creepy and finally saying that's enough. I would rather spend time with friends and family and pets. ❤😊 Good to see your keeping the weight off great job. Happy Easter to you guys.

I can relate. It becomes very easy to get into an endless treadmill of one dopamine hit after another, which is addictive.

This is the most serious and reflected video from you in a very long time. You look much older and serious now. Welcomed! I can't imagine how Chinese social media and sites are with not only infinite scroll but also wild subs flying everywhere. Not a single frame without something to beg for attention. It would melt my brain. Can you make a comparison : just how bad are Chinese clones of ig, fb etc compared to the west

Yeah I think most people are struggling with this and I do highly recommend what you are doing about it. My main problem honestly is still youtube, I don't scroll much on my phone anymore but sometimes when I sit down at my desktop I get sucked in to youtube shorts. Maybe I should find a way to just disable it.

Turn your watch history off and it won’t generate recommendations on videos or shorts. I do this and it’s a life saver. When I open KZbin the Home Screen is blank so I click straight onto my subscriptions and watch something that I chose to subscribe to. Honestly it’s a huge time saver.

I use two browser extensions; distraction free youtube, and remove youtube shorts. Distraction free youtube lets you hide recomended videos, notifications, sidebar, comments, and more. Remove youtube shorts just removes all shorts. Both of these have been super useful to me

I don’t think that people are wrong about what they want, just because they choose to do a certain thing that contradicts what they said they wanted to do. Sometimes doing what we want to do actually requires enough self-control to avoid being distracted by the things which are lower effort, but also overall less satisfying. And people can take advantage of that need for self-control to make you do things that benefit them

Absolutely! People spend way more time using the internet on autopilot than they realize because these websites are designed to make that part of our minds take over and pull us into the Content Casino™. It's like impulsively pulling up to Starbucks for a coffee-flavored milkshake that costs $10 and gives you a stomach ache instead of taking the time to mindfully brew yourself a cup of tea.

@@WestHamParker8 I honestly think this is a hilarious response. I’m literally reminding everybody that there are people out there who will take advantage of your weakness, so you need to get stronger. Maybe you should ask yourself why you seem so interested in rushing to give con artists and grifters some kind of benefit of the doubt.

good stuff xiama! You're looking good too with the weight loss. Also, we are collectively trying to connect through this social media while also being addicted to nonsense. Its a really catch 22. The good news is, a lot of us are feeling the need to break out of it, meaning that real life may start becoming a trend again ahaha. I have wasted lots of time personally, and I hope collectively we make the move away from all this algorithm addictive engagement
