I think I recommended this on your Instagram already, but I REALLY liked "The Once and Future Witches" by Alix E. Harrow. It takes places during America's Gilded Age, and it's about three working-class sisters who do folk magic based on nursery rhymes. However, one of the main reasons I liked it is because, the author discusses how difficult it is to be a woman in a dark, gritty way. There is also some representation of African-American and Native American forms of ancestral magic too.

I just got Tradition of Household Spirits, and even more excited now to get into it! If you're looking for fiction recs, I have to say you should read Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura if you haven't read it already. It wasn't what I expected at all based on the description (in a good way), and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it for weeks. (Also just finished Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa and it was also super good.)

I've been reading a lot more non-fiction lately and am kinda enjoying that. Right now I'm reading Baba Yaga's Book of Witchcraft which I'm really enjoying and a psychology book called Sensitive and honestly it was life changing. I'm still going through it so I can't really leave a review yet but so far I love it. It's helped made soo many things finally make sense for me. Oh and P.S. - Baba Yaga's book also has her point of view as well as Vasylyna's (the MC) and the author's and I really like it

You should anything in the Grimdark genre a shot. They do all tend to be high fantasy - and most are series BUT Grimdark as a genre is very character driven. The characters are often borderline unlikeable people, who make very real decisions in very dark, crappy situations. It's almost never a happily ever and you find yourself rooting for these characters - even though they're not always good people. Some suggestions: - Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin (really cool earth based magic system in this seris. Author is a Hugo Award winner if that matters to you lol) - Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks (again, really cool magic system in this series, this time based on colour magic. My favourite series by far, though it's longer at 5 books) Unfortunately I prefer series over stand alone novels, so I don't really have any single novels to suggest. I get REALLY attached to characters, so if it's a good book, one is never, ever enough lol

If you enjoy well defined characters, I think you might like "Thirteen Storeys" by Jonathan Sims. It's under the fiction category, but has been described as 'a modern horror classic'. Lots of people love it for the feel of traditional horror, brilliant foreshadowing and great story structure, but I personally love how deep the author goes into the mind of a character and just how well you get to know them in less than three pages. The horror hits you hard, because it feels so personal to the characters' worldview and psyche - it is crafted to hurt the character most, not the reader. Anyway, I went on a longer rant than expected😅 but that's because I absolutely Love that book

If you’re looking for an autumnal read I highly highly highly suggest Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh!!! It’s a queer novella about a keeper of the wood, fae in a folklore sense and not in a fantasy way. There’s also a dryad named Bramble and a cat. Also, i haven’t read this yet, but The Once and Future Witches by Alix e. Harrow is like women’s suffragette but the witches suffragette movement instead. The tag line literally says “there’s no such things as witches, but there will be.” I heard it amazing

I recently joined my public librarys' book club. Our July book was a historical fiction called 'Homecoming' by, Kate Morton. I normally would not have rented this book. But I am REALLY GLAD I read it. The ending. ..is just not what I was picturing...like not even 3/4 of the way in. I highly recommend this to everyone. Try it out, you will not be disappointed. Edit: another great read is a series by Cadwell Turner. It's The Convergence Saga, which is a 3 book saga. Book one is called, 'No Gods, No Monsters' book 2 is called 'We Are the Crisis ' and I think book 3 isn't out yet. Book 1 and 2 are very good. Also...another fun and quirky read is called Bless Your Heart. I really think they should make a horror movie from this book. comedy/horror or popular/horror. I loved it. The ending...like the last couple of sentences...killer!

Hello there I like your videos, you're doing a great job by them. I'm here mostly for the witchcraft content and the book reviews though, but you do a good job with the pole too. You should check on The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. It's a great witchy novel halfly set in the Salem witch trials time. I don't know if you'd like it or not, but it's quite an interesting book. And I also recomend to you an other, rather big fantasy-historical fiction, which is nowadays quite problematic for its author, but in itself the book is well written and entertaining. It's The Mists of Avalon. An arthurian mythology-is by the female point of view. But before that look up the writer and what she had done, it's very nasty and gross, to make up your mind about giving the book a try. Best wishes, Olivia, A quite new viewer from Hungary

So you like Dark Fantasy? Is that what you're saying? Many people get Dark Fantasy confused with Grim and Horror. Dark Fantasy can play on the strings of both Grim and Horror very easily because it's a Low Fantasy genre and because of the foundations it lays before you. But that doesn't make it Grim and Horror. Dark Fantasy is much more than that and there are many people including myself who swear by the genre (i.e. it's the liminal genre, if you will, because it's the ambiguis genre, hence the name "Dark"). What Dark Fantasy likes to do, is give a "gloomy" and possibly "doom" with "grey skies" atmosphere as the backdrop and setting with things hidden behind the veil that you could almost touch from time to time. It also likes to put you rate next to the bonfire to maybe sing the hairs off your face, arms, and legs, but not enough to burn you while very skillfully and playfully walking that fine line between "this" and "that" until you get to the climax. It's like Harry Potter, for example, many believe that the series is High Fantasy just because that's what it says on the copyright page because if they didn't print it under the High Fantasy genre it probably wouldn't have initially sold as well in the beginning. When in reality it's a young adult Dark Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery series (i.e. the Sword & Sorcery bit is where people are getting confused as well with High Fantasy; just because magic is involved, doesn't make it a High Fantasy genre which Sword & Sorcery clearly shows and always has because Sword & Sorcery is a Low Fantasy genre too; notice the "sword" and "sorcery" in its title, because magic doesn't solve everything, like it would in a High Fantasy genre). This is why Harry Potter was and still remains as one of the most successful series to date even among actual pagans and witches and even though the magic contained in the series is just pure fantasy, and that's due to the fact that when a market gets saturated in High Fantasy genres, a Dark Fantasy novel or series can come in and dominate the scene. Just think of the simple setup of the first book in the series for a moment of how dark, gloomy, and mundane everything seemingly is but with hints of something much more mystical and mysterious going on behind the scenes; that is Dark Fantasy at work rate there playing on the strings of Sword & Sorcery at first, setting the stage ever so slowly but surely, until it opens up into this whole other hidden world but not losing the pretense of themes within its foundations. And also, many people fondly remember for better or worse chapter 10, of the Chamber of Secrets (i.e. there are people who still to this day skip that chapter 20 years later, however I myself, love it and always have; it's a masterclass of Dark Fantasy playing on the strings of Grim and Horror). Think of The Hunger Games series as well. Yes, it's Sci-Fi, but it's also a Dark Fantasy, Political Society, and War genre. Once more we have that dominate "doom and gloom and grey skies" even if the sun is shining rate now atmosphere as the backdrop and setting that we begin with. To put it bluntly and the most amazing thing, is that Dark Fantasy as a genre, loves to pluck on the strings of other genres ever so slightly like an orchastra slowly weaving and sewing different melodies together to make beautiful music. It takes time to build, but once your in the fray there's no denying what's at stake and what's placed rate before you on a silver platter, and when finally it comes toward the end of a Dark Fantasy novel or series for it's finale it loves to just barely peak above the Low Fantasy ceiling for a moment or two making it shine all the more brighter than any High Fantasy genre could ever hope to wish to achieve. And if even young adult Dark Fantasy books are good enough for actual adults that's saying a lot. It has nothing to do with nostalgia why people go back to read series such as Harry Potter. It's genuinely because Dark Fantasy is no easy task to properly craft because it can easily devolve into something else if the author isn't careful and it's hard to come by compared to other genres (i.e. many people as young adults put the Chamber of Secrets at the very bottom of the list in comparison to the other books in the series, but once they become an adult, they notice all the little easter eggs that Dark Fantasy often likes to hide in passing such as the scene with the Weasely's and Malfoys almost getting into a fight in the same shop when school shoping, some easter eggs in that chapter that are answers to many people's complaints of some lose ends people thought existed in the series, and among other things Dark Fantasy pulls on the strings of in that book, and they come to appreciate the book much more than when they did as a young adult). And it's also because Dark Fantasy is that five star restuarant that you hoped for but in a down to earth way with good home cooking that you just can't get anywhere else; and in the end, Dark Fantasy is based on hope at its core which is something people can deeply resonate with on a profound level, rather than imagination.
